Weather forecasting involves analyzing atmospheric conditions to predict precipitation patterns and temperature changes. In this forecast, meteorologists explain that despite visible cloud cover and rain approaching from the south, the air overhead remains incredibly dry, which delays precipitation until later Saturday night. The forecast predicts cool, dry conditions through Saturday, followed by all-day rain on Sunday, with temperatures dropping into the 40s overnight. By Memorial Day Monday, conditions improve with a damp morning but drier, milder afternoon temperatures near 70°F. This demonstrates how forecasters interpret atmospheric moisture levels, cloud cover, and pressure systems to provide accurate weather predictions.

WPRI 12 Weather Forecast 5/22/26 Cool Dry Saturday, Rain SundayAdded:
Now to your pinpoint weather [music] 12 forecast as we give you a live look from Providence. Those clouds are starting to fill in after a sunny start to the day, but of course all eyes are on the weekend ahead of Memorial Day. And it's looking kind of like a mixed bag. Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca joins us now, but not all rain, Tony. No, we'll get some some dry periods, Kim. Still feel as though the best chance for rain is going to be centered on Sunday. Now it looks like like an all day rain. Had some sunshine, now the clouds are starting to take over. It's more of a dim kind of an opaque sky. You can just barely see the disc of the sun through the cloud cover, but otherwise breezy, cool, and dry. Looking at only 60 in the Bedford. Let me Typically this time of year we're about 70, 71. Most areas now checking in in the low 60s. Already down to 58 Newport.
It'll fall through the 50s this evening and actually 40s during the overnight.
Now it stays dry, you don't need an umbrella, at least not yet. I would take a light jacket though. It's rather cool for this time of year later on this evening. But dry skies tonight, clouds are rolling in. Now it stays dry throughout the entire daylight hours of Saturday, even early Saturday evening like 7:00 8:00, 9:00, it's still dry. It's later Saturday night rains working in, probably near or after midnight. And it's all day. I wouldn't hesitate to use the word "washout" on Sunday. All day rain, very cool temperatures. And then we'll trend or some improvement for Memorial Day Monday, especially the second half of the day. May start off damp in the morning early and then trending drier and milder as we get into the afternoon. Could even see some breaks of sun by Monday afternoon.
Temperature profile. Typically we're about 71, 65 tomorrow. It is cool and wet on Sunday. By Monday, later in the day, briefly getting up to around 70, then little hints of summer. Middle of next week we'll see temperatures in the upper 70s to around 80. You see a canopy of clouds increasing right now ahead of our next weather system. You see the leading edge of rain out towards southern Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley along this warm front. I mean, while it appears as though it's like knocking right on our doorstep, the air overhead is so incredibly dry that it's really holding this rain back.
So, the arrival time on this is actually not until uh later tomorrow night.
And then eventually an area of low pressure passing to our south is going to enhance really all day rain coming up on Sunday. In the meantime, we're just cool and dry.
Dew points, they're still quite low.
This area shaded in light brown across New England indicating very low humidity, and that's why we'll keep things dry this evening and right on through a better part of Saturday.
Switch it over into the future. Watch the time bar. Clouds continue to increase this evening, but dry and cool.
If you're out and about 10:00 11:00, it's only about 54°.
Move ahead now to Saturday morning with mainly cloudy skies at 8:00 a.m. We're still dry, mid-50s. Take note of the green out towards New York City, the leading edge of rain. Saturday afternoon, it's still uh dry and the rain still well to our west. Saturday evening, early like 7:00 8:00 in the evening, we're dry.
And then here it comes, later Saturday night. And then look at this widespread rain here Sunday morning. I mean, there's nothing scattered. It's all Sunday morning, afternoon, and into Sunday evening and Sunday night before the thrust of it actually pulls away uh by Memorial Day Monday morning. For this evening, mainly cloudy, cool, and dry.
By uh 11:00, we're at 51. And both tomorrow morning and again tomorrow afternoon, looking mainly cloudy, cool, and dry. Daytime highs in the mid-60s.
Uh your rain late Saturday night, all day rain on Sunday. Uh Monday not perfect, but it is certainly a much better than Sunday. So, Memorial Day Monday, a damp start early, but then it's a little brightening in the afternoon and milder second half of the day with a high near 70. All right, Tony. Thank
