Cornell’s analysis masterfully reveals how strategic harmonic choices like the Mixolydian flat 6 serve as the silent architecture of cinematic storytelling. It proves that a truly great film score doesn't just set a mood, but functions as a sophisticated narrative engine that mirrors the protagonist's entire journey.

Deliver Us: The Greatest Opening To A Film EVER WrittenHinzugefügt:
This is the single greatest opening of any animated film ever made and might just be one of the greatest openings, period. Buckle up because if you've never heard this before, this is going to blow you away.
Trumpet was such a good choice here.
that note.
>> Okay. Sorry. I I started to say something. That note uh just sort of told us the entire harmonic uh space that we're going to be working in at first. Um and I'll tell you right off the bat, it is mixelyian flat 6. That may not mean anything to you, which is totally okay.
It is such a cool sound and it's such an epic choice for this and we're going to see how it develops into just some of the most gorgeous music in this film and one of the if not the greatest openings to a film ever. This is absolutely epic.
Let's give it a little more time here.
>> I love how you can hear Ra finds like so clearly right there.
Faster than sand and water and raise up the wind.
>> Okay. And now we're in. Okay. So, this song was written by Steven Schwarz, right? And we've talked about Steven Schwarz recently because we were talking about the Hunchback of Notre Dame, all the work that Steven Schwarz did with Alan Min. incredible lyricist, incredible songwriter, but of course the arranging and the orchestration was Han Zimmer. So the combination of Han Zimmer, Steven Schwarz, I mean it's just absolutely epic. And in the beginning, we get some classic Han Zimmer sound.
Oh, >> with the salt of my sweat on my brow.
Can you hear your people cry?
>> Okay, there. So much going on right there. By the way, one of the incredible things about this sequence and one of the things that I think makes it maybe the greatest ever is we get the entire film in like 7 minutes. Okay, in the very beginning as we were doing that all that Han Zimmer orchestration there, we are establishing the problem. We're seeing exactly what's happening, right?
Slavery in Egypt. The ancient Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for over 400 years. And this is what it's depicting.
It's setting the stage saying, "Hey, here's the thing that's wrong." This is the entire premise of the film right here in front of you. And now, as we start getting into the verse, we're going to start to hear the Hebrews making their prayer to God. They're saying, "Deliver us." Right? That's the whole point of the song, okay? And it's just going to get crazier from there because the way that this depicts in seven minutes, the entire film will blow your mind. And there's even a part about Moses himself hidden in this song that I don't know if you've ever thought about before, but will blow your mind even more. So stay tuned for that. You know, you've seen me break down like tons of music on this channel. You've watched me hear something and just like immediately be able to play it back. And the reason I can do that is because I've built a skill set and an understanding of music that gives me complete freedom on the piano. And I want you to have that freedom, too. I don't take sponsorships on this channel because I wanted to offer something that that was actually relevant to you and not just some random company that neither of us care about.
And that's why I created the Better Piano System to give you the tools that I use to be able to look at music in this way, which just makes listening so much more fun and rewarding. And when it comes to the piano, I I just think that a lot of what learning the piano has always been sucks. Most people quit. And it's not because they're not capable.
It's just because like it just it becomes overwhelming and and not fun, which of course is why we do this in the first place. So, I built the better piano system specifically to solve that problem. The first thing you're going to do in the first video is get your hands on the keys, making beautiful sounds, even if you've never done it before. And then within 30 minutes, we're starting to work on your first full song, all without any reading sheet music or any music theory or any of that. I don't want to overwhelm you with information.
I want to get you having fun and seeing results as fast as possible. A lot of the time, learning the piano is all about learning the building blocks before you can make beautiful music. And with the better piano system, I wanted to flip that around. Let's get you making music first and then we will add all of the skills and understanding naturally as we go. So, if you've always wanted to learn, but you've ever felt like it's too late for me or I'm not talented enough or I just don't think I have enough time, I made this specifically for you. You can learn this. You just need a system that makes sense and keeps you coming back. So, if you're ready to finally sit down and start learning the piano, then check out the better piano system. There's a link in the description below or there's a QR code somewhere around here. It's the best way you can support the channel and I am so grateful for that support. So, thank you. Thank you. Let's keep going.
>> Woo! We got to we got to listen to some of that because there's some really really fantastic songwriting going on.
Um, now of course it let's back up a little bit more because in the beginning we get some basic but really effective harmony.
And then we're going to stay there.
>> There's our resolution to E minor. Now >> Yeah. Okay. Oh man, this writing is just so insane. we get this this very pop chord progression almost. I mean, it's coming straight out of like I will survive, right? Like check this out. So, we go >> that is so a minor. So, that's like a 25 1 2 5 1 4 man. And then, but we get this chord, this F major chord, which is nothing like what we've heard before yet.
And then I think, do we drop down to like a D minor before getting our big five chord? That brings us into the chorus.
I love that delayed 51.
It's just so huge.
up to the D minor and then the five.
>> Go right back to it.
>> What a brilliantly written chorus that is. Let me show you what's going on there cuz it is so so epic.
Okay, right there. That is so so sick.
So, we go back to Deliver Us, but then when we go um the melody goes there and the chords run around all over the place right there for a second. So we we kind of get this real quick C B uh sorry A uh E E minor and then we walk down to A over C sharp. And that allows that baseline to move down in a consistent direction. And then we're going to go to C major before finally getting our five chord.
and then ending on E minor again. That is just such a sick chord progression.
Oh, so cool.
>> Oh, two things going on at once. Two things going. Okay, so Offra Huzzah comes in with just the absolutely absolutely beautiful vocals. While that's happening, the chorus is is just on like Oz or whatever doing the melody from the verse that we just covered.
Listen underneath.
>> Here's the chord progression. Nothing I can give but this chance that you may live. I pray we'll meet again.
>> Back to the chorus.
Oh, right there. Oh, sorry.
>> Okay. So, now I want you to pay close attention to this.
>> The one becomes the major third of the new key. We go from E, right? We had a little bit of E major in the beginning, but mostly E minor, right? Go from E now to C major.
And that E, which was the home base, is now the major third of C. And listen to this. This is just Oh, this just hurts to listen to.
Hush now, my baby, be still love, don't cry.
Sleep as you're rocked by the stream.
Sleep and remember my last la.
So I'll be with you when you dream.
Wow. Wow. Okay. So, we changed key into C major and now we're going to introduce the lullabi. And this is just devastatingly beautiful. And so much of what we're going to do is just playing between the one and the minor 4, which is F minor, but also kind of like the minor 4 with the six. But could you look at that as a D half diminish chord? I don't. It's all kind of the same thing. It doesn't really matter. But we kind of just have this one minor 4.
And our melody is just going to absolutely beautifully work around that.
It's the trumpet line. It's the trumpet line from the beginning.
Oh man.
>> Oh, and then we modulate up a whole step.
>> Oh, right there.
Did you hear that? It was very subtle.
>> That sharp 11 is in there, which just gives this whole thing such a wondrous type of feel. You know what I mean?
>> Same chord progression.
Ever.
There's that sharp 11. What an absolutely beautiful swell right there.
It's just unreal. Let me let me break this down for you because this is just it makes it that much more brilliant. We had the establishment of the problem, slavery, the ancient Hebrews in Egypt.
Then we have the prayer to God asking for deliverance. Okay? Then we have who we know is the hero of the story introduced hope. Okay. But watch this.
We're about to see this incredibly orchestrated section from Mont Zimmer as we go down the Nile and things get a little nuts.
Ready?
Key change.
Another key change.
We're building up and up and up.
All the while we're using bits and pieces from themes throughout. Right?
So, we heard more of the lullabi, but then we heard the chorus to deliver us in there, too. And now we're getting the end of the lullaby right here.
Right?
And now as it calms down, we get this really beautiful settling.
And now we go right back to the lullabi because we have established that Moses is going to be safe. But I want you to think about how this basically shows the whole film and shows the entire hero's journey of Moses in this one scene. He's introduced as the hero and soon enough he's he's like carried by forces outside of his control, the river. He's protected through impossible circumstances. Right? We see this later as his identity is revealed to him and then he is visited by God in the burning bush and from that point he's moving towards something he can't yet understand. Baby Moses going down the Nile is unaware of like what's happening and and where he's going, right? And likewise, Moses reluctantly takes on the mission that God gave him, trusting that he would be shown what to do along the way. Ultimately surviving things that should destroy him like alligators and boats and all kinds of stuff in the Nile as well as all of the things that transpire in the rest of the film. This one moment of being introduced to the hero of the story, he immediately goes on a mini hero's journey which is going to be echoed throughout the rest of the movie. It's just it's so brilliant. This is why I think it's it's the music, yes, but it's also the context. It's also everything that was written into this 7-minute sequence to show you the entire film, all before we've even started.
So many key changes in here. And finally, Miam sings.
>> And we're we're back to C major.
>> For I have a prayer just for you.
>> That that sharp 11 is incredible.
Come back someday.
Come and listen to those string voicings. Listen to those string voicings.
>> Sounds like some type of sus.
Whoa.
Back to the deliver chorus.
Oh, send a shepherd to us.
Is that just C dominant? Might just be C7 with the B flat in the bass.
What tops that? Definitely the greatest opening to an animated movie and probably very much up there just in all films ever. But of course, I'm curious what your thoughts are. So, let me know in the comments down below if you agree that this is one of the greatest ever or if there's other ones I should take a look at from maybe other films, then let me know that, too. But as always, thank you so much for watching this video and we will see you on
