[00:00:54]It's not a meteor." Cut to the Batmobile. The sensors are already screaming unknown bio-hazard. Batman's 30 seconds out. Batman has beaten [music] gods. He's outlasted every plague Gotham ever cooked up to kill him. But every threat he's beaten had the same thing going for it, a logic he could crack, a weakness he could prep for. Tonight isn't a question of whether he's smart enough or strong enough. It's whether you can prep for something that takes your greatest strengths, your intelligence, your family, your mercy, and turns every one of them into a weapon pointed back at you. Chapter 1.

[00:01:38]First contact, Gordon's infection, and Batman's arrival. Batman drops into the park and starts scanning. The crater reads clean. Clean on gas compounds, clean on radiation, clean on every biological marker his systems know how to look for. That's the first warning sign and he doesn't catch it. Here's what the flood is. It isn't a toxin and it isn't a virus not in any sense Batman's lab gear was built to detect.

It navigates toward nervous tissue and makes decisions on the way. Batman's rebreather was built to stop Scarecrow's fear gas, Joker venom, Ivy's spores. Big molecule compounds his filters are rated for. Flood spores work at a scale much smaller than anything on that rating sheet. So, the filters never flag them.

[00:02:46]His gear isn't broken. It was just built for a planet this thing's never been on.

[00:02:51]Gordon is 20 ft from the crater when Batman spots him. Neck bent the wrong way. A dark glistening stalk pushing up through the meat of his shoulder tasting the air. Batman fires a freeze pellet.

[00:03:06]Contain first, assess after. That's the reflex. The ice works on the body.

[00:03:12]Gordon's arm already loose at the joint snaps clean off at the elbow from the contraction. Gordon doesn't look down.

[00:03:19]He doesn't flinch, doesn't scream. He keeps waiting because for the thing wearing Gordon now nothing happened.

[00:03:28]Batman pulls back and runs it. Not Joker. Joker wants a reaction. Not Bane.

[00:03:34]Bane wants a win. This doesn't want anything his database has a counter for.

[00:03:39]So, he defaults to what he always does when he hits a wall. Call in the family.

[00:03:45]Build a perimeter. Contain the spread while he finds a solution. Against any other threat in 20 years. That's the right call. What he doesn't know, the flood has been inside Gordon's head for several minutes already, reading badge numbers, patrol routes, and the encrypted frequency Gordon just used to call him, the secure channel, now sitting in the hive's memory like a key left in a lock. The flood doesn't announce itself. It files it and waits for Batman to make the call. Survival tier so far? D. He has the gear, the instincts, the intelligence. None of it's calibrated for this, and he doesn't know that yet. Chapter two, the family falls. Nightwing, Tim, Barbara. Batman makes the call. Nightwing to the Narrows, Tim to the cave lab, Barbara running coordination from the clock tower. It's the same architecture he's used for every major Gotham crisis, and it's worked every time, because every other crisis was underneath a human problem. This one only looks like one.

The second one hits center mass. It pops open on contact, fluid spraying in a wide arc. A little of it catches his jaw. Just a little. Just enough. 30 seconds. That's about how long the flood needs to read Dick Grayson's nervous system and start driving it. What stands up out of that fight isn't Dick anymore. It's a combat form with his acrobatics, his balance.

[00:05:51]15 years of muscle memory trained to move inside Batman's guard. The flood didn't just take a soldier. It took the one man alive who knows where every gap in Batman's defense is because Batman trained those gaps into him personally.

[00:06:09]Tim is in the cave's remote lab. He thinks it's the safest place he can be.

[00:06:14]And against anything with a front door, it would be. The flood doesn't need a door. It needs one infected rat in the lower tunnels. And Gotham's sewers have been compromised since the first hour.

[00:06:28]The cave connects to those sewers 300 m down. Tim finds that out when something that used to be a rat drags itself through a vent and the motion sensor starts screaming. He burns through everything. Smoke grenades to kill visibility and EMP pulses for anything electronic. Sonic batarangs tuned to the frequencies that drop [music] most living threats. None of it lands because the flood doesn't navigate by sight, doesn't run on electronics, and doesn't read pain as a reason to stop. Tim was trained to fight things that flinch.

[00:07:09]Barbara catches what Batman missed. From the clock tower, she's watching the data and the comms traffic is wrong. The signal on Nightwing's channel sounds exactly like Dick. Same cadence, same clipped phrasing, same habit of dropping the first word of a sentence under pressure. And for 10 minutes, it's [music] been steering Batman toward the Narrows waterfront into a zone where the flood's biomass has pooled [music] thick enough to be a kill box. The thing wherein Dick Grayson isn't just surviving [music] out there. It's running an operation. So, she burns it.

Every minute inside it, his body burns through reserves it can't put back mid-fight. Maximum output, finite window, no second run. He gets the seals locked. He turns around. Alfred is in the trophy room. What's left of Alfred is in the trophy room. The flood reached him before Batman made it back and whatever it found in Alfred Pennyworth, 70 years of memory, of loyalty, of every conversation he ever had with Bruce Wayne in this cave, it kept all of it.

[00:09:54]The mass threading across the trophy cases and up the ceiling isn't large yet, but it's dense. It's wet and it already has a voice. Batman burns [music] it. First lethal force of his career, flame projectors at full output and the trophy room goes white for 3 seconds. The spread doesn't slow down.

[00:10:16]Then the thing speaks. Not from one spot, from everywhere the biomass has grown into the cave walls. It uses Gordon's voice first, then Dick's, then Alfred's. Not screaming, not threatening, just talking in the exact cadence of the three people he's just lost. It doesn't try to break him. It makes an argument. "20 years," it says, in a voice that is exactly Alfred on a quiet Tuesday morning. "20 years in this city and the crime rate sits where it did the night you started. The Joker's died and come back four times. You know the math. You always know the math. This is the weapon the flood once used to crack a Forerunner war intelligence.

And for a second, the argument carries the exact weight of something he's thought himself alone at 3:00 in the morning. He pulls up the city grid on his wrist display instead. After the Joker's last mass casualty night, Batman buried a thermite network under Gotham's highest infection risk zones, a contingency he never told a soul because it was the kind of plan he couldn't afford to ever use. It would kill people, infected people, already gone, but people. He triggers it now. Then, he sets the cave's self-destruct. The ground shakes for a long time. [music] Thousands of infected gone. He finally chose the city over the rule. Here's what the flood knew and Batman didn't. Past a certain biomass density, individual losses stop registering as damage. The hive doesn't count bodies, it counts tonnage.

His last clear act is pulling the Watchtower's coordinates up on his wrist display and smashing the display against the cave floor. He knows what the flood wants next. He knows the League has no idea Gotham's burning because Barbara cut the comms 6 hours ago. Keep those coordinates out of the hive's reach and the infection stays on Earth. The Grave Mind lets him finish, then it tells him, in Gordon's voice, that it pulled the Watchtower's location out of Gordon's memory in the first 10 minutes of the outbreak. The gesture was always [music] empty. It just waited until exactly this moment to say so because the flood understands cruelty the way it understands everything, as information, as a tool. It is one more way to close out a conversion. Above ground, Gotham is quiet. Not the silence of an empty city, [music] the silence of a city that's been repurposed. Every street, every building, everybody reshaped into something that breathes in one coordinated rhythm. The Hive doesn't need Gotham to be a city anymore. It needs it to be a launch point. Somewhere in the biomass, a shape that used to be Bruce Wayne stands up. It moves like him. His balance, his posture, 30 years of trained muscle memory, but Batman is gone. And the thing standing there knows exactly where the Watchtower is.
