The Gulf of Mexico was once dry land approximately 400 million years ago, when the region cooled faster than the rest of North America, causing the land to contract and sink below sea level, allowing Atlantic Ocean water to rush in and carve out the basin; natural mountain barriers prevented further inland flooding, and this geological transformation occurred relatively quickly in geological terms, not gradually over millions of years.

Gulf of Mexico Was Once Dry Land?! 😱🌍Added:
Many people don't realize that the Gulf of Mexico was once completely dry land.
Hard to imagine today since it's now one of the largest bodies of water in the Americas. But millions of years ago, it was all solid ground. And here's the wild part. It didn't slowly fill up over millions of years. In geological terms, it happened almost overnight. Some scientists believe for years that a massive meteor, the same one that wiped out the dinosaurs 70 million years ago, created the Gulf. But research shows the Gulf existed long before that. almost 400 million years ago. Back then, the land in this region cooled much faster than the rest of the North American continent. As it cooled, it contracted and began to sink. Once it dropped below sea level, water from the Atlantic Ocean rushed in, carving out the land even deeper through erosion. Eventually, the Gulf of Mexico took shape just as we know it today. And the only reason it didn't spread further inland, natural barriers, the mountains in Mexico, and the ranges in central and eastern United States. Without them, half the US could have been swallowed by the sea. Nature rewrites the map, and it almost changed America forever.
