During World War II, German U-boat captain Hartenstein saved 1,800 Italian prisoners of war and British civilians from the sinking British ship Laconia in 1942, but was subsequently bombed by American aircraft despite displaying Red Cross flags, leading Admiral Dönitz to issue the Laconia Order that banned all future U-boat rescues and condemned thousands of sailors to death.

German Sub Captain Saved Enemy Lives Then Got Bombed By ThemHinzugefügt:
Did you know a German submarine captain once saved enemy lives only to be bombed by the very people he was trying to help? September 15th, 1942, the South Atlantic becomes a graveyard when German U-boat 156 torpedoes the British ship Laconia. But Captain Hartenstein discovers something horrifying in the wreckage, 1,800 Italian prisoners of war, Germany's own allies, drowning in the dark water. Hartenstein does the unthinkable. He surfaces his submarine and begins pulling survivors aboard. He radios for help in English, German, >> [music] >> and Italian. He flies Red Cross flags.
For hours, his U-boat tows lifeboats through the waves, saving British civilians and Italian soldiers alike.
Then American bombers appear overhead.
Despite the Red Cross flags and rescue signals, they attack. Bombs explode around the submarine. Survivors in the water are killed by their own rescuers.
Hartenstein faces an impossible choice, keep saving lives and risk his crew, or dive and abandon the drowning. The ocean claims more victims as he's forced underwater. This attack changed naval warfare forever. Admiral Dönitz banned all future U-boat rescues, condemning thousands of sailors to watery graves.
Sometimes mercy becomes the deadliest weapon of all.
