My HVAC Thursday running 6 calls #bluecollar #hvac #hvaccontractorAdded:
Good morning, guys. Good morning. Good morning.
It is 7:33 May 21st, Thursday.
So Sorry. Uh reading a message. So Thank God for another beautiful day.
Yes, um so right right now I'm at my supply house.
And um I'm going to stock up my van because I do got a long day ahead of me.
I got a couple calls. I got at least five right now. So uh Yeah, let's see how it goes, folks.
Let's see how it goes.
>> [music] >> Yeah. Okay, let me turn this on.
Cool. And you said it's upstairs. Yeah.
Okay.
>> Are you good? I got a I got a headlamp.
>> Okay. Yeah. Thank you.
I got to see some water in here.
I don't know if y'all can see that.
There was had a little bit of something in there.
>> [snorts] >> All right, let me go get my bag cuz this thing is not coming on.
I don't see enough water in the pan to make the switch.
Um but let's see.
All right, so I'm not getting any anything and I don't have no lights on my um board.
Fuse looks good.
So, I'm going to check the power.
ground three 3 volts All right, let me um let me go check the breaker before I take off this um Let's go check that breaker.
Really? Yeah.
Uh furnace Okay, guys, it is tripped. Is this one?
All right, let's um Let's see why it tripped. All right, so moment of truth.
See what we got.
To ground.
All right, we got 120.
Um let's see what happens.
Wow.
What in the world just happened, guys?
Oh.
Is there something touching this board?
Hope I didn't fry this board.
What?
Let me turn this off just in case.
So, I'm looking for wires that could be broken or making contact with other wires.
Okay.
Let me see if I have a voltage here still. Probably don't.
I did hear the unit try to come on.
Okay, I do.
All right, we're going to turn this off for now.
And we're going to inspect this more clearly.
Try to get some space in.
How burnt that is.
All right, we got to put a bid for a new board on that one. It's probably under warranty.
But, um dang, this is one of the dirtiest houses I've I've been in.
Uh I got some hand sanitizer.
Hey, how you doing? Can I look at the AC? Yeah. Yes, sir.
How you doing? All right, for sure.
Okay.
So, the To your right. Okay, do you know what level is not working?
Is it upstairs or downstairs? Or is it everything? Yeah. Both? Okay. So, you got two thermostats?
No, this is one. Just this one? Yeah.
You don't got one upstairs? No.
Okay. And it's off, it's not doing anything.
Oh, there we go.
Oh, so you don't got a thermostat?
Holy, I don't know why people just don't turn the systems off.
Uh I can't wait here.
This thing is completely frozen. I can't just wait here for this to thaw out when I have other calls I got to get to.
As I'm at my third call, for this one I actually have a code.
Seems like it worked.
Wow. You serious?
Another frozen system.
Oh my goodness.
All right, guys. I decided to not um even though it's a heat pump, I can't wait here 30, 40 minutes for that thing to completely thaw out. So, um Y'alls company might say different, but good thing is I can kind of make my own decisions here. So, we'll have to reschedule, folks. I got other calls I got to get to. So, and um I'm pretty sure these people they tell them if the system isn't working to turn it off to prevent things like this, but they don't. So, it is what it is.
All right, we're at our fourth call.
Let's see if we can actually fix something.
Thermostat over here. This here. Um yep, the one upstairs. Okay. And the unit is this way. Okay, did somebody come out before me? Yeah. Oh, did they When did they do? It was frozen. They had Oh, okay. Okay, cool. All right. So, Let me give you the key to that. Can So, it's the upstairs level that's not cooling?
Uh-huh. Okay, that way I can go to that thermostat and I'll probably have to be in and out, okay? That's fine. Okay.
Yeah, so it's this one upstairs. The unit is If you go this way, it's that way. Okay. I don't think there's anything under the house, but he went under the house and that's the key to that. Okay. Okay. All right.
>> So, let me turn Well, I'm sorry. Let me just leave this bag here. Okay. Yeah. Yeah.
Okay.
We got this wall.
I'm assuming there's nothing up here cuz the Look at how they ran this thermostat wire.
Okay.
Okay. So, at least somebody had sense enough to turn it off. It's probably the maintenance man for the property management.
So, man, of course we got these cages.
She did give me this key.
She said just in case it's in the crawl space.
Um All right, guys. I'm assuming this is the one that is working.
The line is cold and the liquid line is warm, so I'll say this is not it.
[clears throat] Most likely it's this one.
Let's see if it power.
All right, folks.
This is the This is the stuff you run into when you This is This is what me and Curtis was talking about on on his podcast. You just run into some crazy stuff. Look at this.
This is ridiculous. Look how they got this unit.
Both of these units, they got them right there next to that sub pump.
If that ever overfills, which it looks like it has, that water just gets up in there.
And look at this flue vent.
I mean, this is just crazy. And the crazy thing about it is they have enough space. This is a decent size crawl.
They could have put it horizontally.
Could have put it over there horizontally, and they could have put a 90% furnace, so they could have they could vent out the side with it.
I mean, this is crazy.
That's some jobs.
I mean, we can still troubleshoot it for the cooling.
But, look at that. It's crazy.
All right, so the one we're working on for upstairs is this one.
But, this thing has a cage on it.
So, we can't really work on it without getting this damn cage out the way, guys. So, I just started taking these off.
I just cut them off. Leave them to the side. I'm not >> [snorts] >> playing with nobody no more.
All right, we got this thing off. I had to take my camera off off my chest. Had to take my camera off my chest cuz it's just ridiculous how they put stuff in. Anyways, our pressure right now is looking normal. So, I don't understand what why it was frozen.
Um but, I'll have to look at inside as well.
My suction pressure is good.
Subcool is good. 11 subcool right now, so definitely not low on refrigerant.
Superheat is at six.
So, we'll we'll let this thing run and then um I'll probably go inside and check if that uh is a PSC blower motor inside the furnace.
Yeah, I don't I'm not really liking today, guys. Ain't really getting no clear calls or nothing like that, but sometimes it happens.
>> All of this nice crawl space to just put your system here.
Stupid.
All right, so I'm getting the static pressure readings. This is my return.
.8 That's no surprise. It's a crappy system right here.
So not the system, but you know, the design. Whoever put it in there just slapped it in there without caring about anything else. And I have.4 on the supply. So I have a very high static pressure.
So suction pressure still at 125.
Look at that superheat. It's at It's at one.
So we know we do not have a low charge issue because we have 11Β° subcool.
I'm thinking we have a airflow issue cuz the line is just getting colder and colder. Line section line temp is 44.
And um Let's see um what we can find on the return side. I'm going to get my temperature split as well.
See if I have a high temperature split.
That'll probably help me decide whether it's low airflow.
All right, guys. This definitely confirms low airflow. I have a high delta 23.
Let me answer this call.
Temperature split is at almost 24Β°.
Zero I'm sorry, not zero. It's very low superheat.
So, I got a airflow issue, especially on the return side. I got 0.7.
Um So, what I'm doing right now is um system's not freezing up right now, obviously, but it's going to freeze up. So, we got Look at this. This is a 12.
This is a 12 going to a Y, going to another Y.
This is another 12.
So, they got the They got the returns right here.
They got the supplies.
Those are not the best grills, but they're not closed.
Turn to Yeah. units down there, too. And so, it basically is 28 All right. So, the tenant was walking with me. We were just going over over everything. The um returns are all open.
Supplies are, too. This is just a all all around crappy job. Look at this line set. Quarter-inch line set. They got one condensate pump.
And both drains are being uh drained to that one pump.
>> [laughter] >> All right. So, uh I'm going to do one last check.
This filter in this blower and also I'm going to check across the coil just to get my static pressure reading across the coil but Yeah, this is a not the best job. All right, this is my static drop across the coil.
So I have.5 here at the furnace and then at the supply plenum I have.16 so it could be maybe dirty maybe not but that's probably not something I would focus on.
All right, let's check the filter.
Okay guys, I don't know why I thought the filter was in better condition. That might be a big part of our our static drop.
I mean our our high static pressure.
I just couldn't get it out earlier because the fan was running.
Man, this is just crazy.
Can't even get to the control board unless you I'm just going to stop complaining.
Hmm, look at this. They bypassed the limit switch on that blower wheel.
I wonder why.
Look at Look at how they cut this hole.
That's restricting some airflow.
Godly, look at that plenum, bro.
Yeah guys, these guys are man guys are some hacks.
Trash.
Y'all some trash. So I bet this was probably uh up in the heating cycle and they just bypassed it.
It looks like it's been bypassed for a minute, too.
Never gets old. So, we're just going to put a new filter in there.
And um we'll record all the other stuff that we found.
And we will quote very high, of course.
Cuz I'm not going to just do some crappy stuff.
>> [snorts] >> So, we'll quote very high to get this thing up how it's supposed to be. I actually looked inside her attic.
And um I found that there was enough space, so really my recommendation would be to relocate this or not even this.
Um probably a new system or relocate this up into the attic, new duct work.
It's just This is just stupid.
Check out how I got to put my filter in there.
Oh, okay. You can just You can just bend your filter in place.
And another reason I had a hard time getting the filter out was cuz the hole that they cut in that furnace it's not the best hole. They Looks like they cut it with snips or something.
And they left all those sharp edges.
So, y'all know those folks are not going to care about the recommendations that I that I put on this on the invoice on the on the bid.
Um not the bid, the you know, just the notes.
But um they're probably just going to say, "Hey, he replaced the filter. We're all good."
But yeah, guys, that's why you got to double-check everything cuz for some reason whenever the system was running, I was trying to I was trying to pull the filter out and uh it wouldn't come out.
And then I I I I looked at it just enough on the end of the filter where it still looked white, but it looked like that cuz whoever cut the the hole for the return didn't cut it out correctly. So, they didn't cut it all the way towards the front of the furnace if that makes sense. So, when I turn the switch off and I take the filter out that thing is filthy, so it's probably not going to freeze up again, but it's definitely running very poorly and it's just that's a bad install. Anyways, let's head on to the next one.
Let's see if we can actually fix something, you know what I mean?
Sometimes days like like these happen where you're just riding around.
But, uh yeah, let's see.
Okay.
So, let's see. I turned it on cool.
All right, I don't hear anything.
And I don't feel anything, so let's go outside.
It's been a weird day.
It's been a weird day, fellas.
All right.
Okay, I hear my contactor buzzing.
So, that means most likely I am getting 24 volts out here.
What the heck is this?
This is to the compressor.
This is loose.
Oh, wow.
Let me check if I got power. Most likely that probably tripped the breaker.
zero This is loose.
What is going on here? Where is the Okay, so All right, guys. We don't have power.
Let me go check that breaker.
Damn, look at this coil.
All right, at least it looks like we can fix something.
All right, um I went to go reset that breaker. It was tripped.
And I I got my disconnect off just in case.
So This is the line from the disconnect which was off cuz it got burnt off from here.
This is the compressor.
Looks like somebody spliced it or what happened. This is also the compressor start winding.
This is the compressor common winding.
This is the fan. So, we need to get a new contactor just based off of that.
All right, let's go ahead check the compressor.
I'm sorry, the capacitor. Let's go ahead check that.
40 So, is this a 40/5?
So, the capacitor is good.
Make sure it is a 40/5.
Oh, it's a 45/5.
So, let's go ahead replace that and the contactor.
I do have another call I have to go to.
So, I'm trying to be quick and efficient.
This is common.
This one is also common.
This is the fan that we need to reconnect this to the herm.
Okay.
Let me see. I need to get some wire nuts.
I think I got some.
Right here.
So, we'll just reconnect this. I don't know why it was cut already. It looks like it was cut before.
And then we will also replace this contactor.
All right. So, this is my common.
And this is my common from the our term spade terminals.
Okay, we do have to unscrew the bottom one.
And we do got to be very careful with this one.
I probably should have done something else on this one.
But, let's see. I'm not trying to short this out. So, let's work with that right there.
>> All right, let's put these back so they won't be hanging in there.
Going to make sure this thing works before I um attempt to clean that coil.
And it does.
All right, we're going to check the pressures real quick.
All right, guys, quick check on the pressures.
I'm not going to check superheat or subcool.
Um I'm already at the uh at the not to exceed limit kind of on this one, but I am going to try to rinse this coil out.
I did put some electrical tape around the wire nuts.
I don't know, probably didn't need to do that, but in my mind maybe it's a little bit more secure, who knows.
All right, folks, so this is for the property management.
And like I said, I'm already at the borderline of the not to exceed limit.
Um so I'm not going to take the panels off or nothing like that.
But I am going to give this thing a wash.
Godly.
This would have been a good one to take off.
Oh, man. I think I'm going to have to take this off.
All right. So, the back side, I didn't take off the panels, but I did spray some coil cleaner and washed it from the inside out.
All right, guys. Uh we are headed to our next call.
At least we were able to fix something.
It was very simple. I don't know why those wires were cut. I don't know.
But, we just replaced the contactor and the capacitor.
So, I got I got another call, guys.
I actually had another one come in, too.
And [snorts] um I told them 3:00 to 6:00.
Excuse me. I'm sorry. I told them 3:00 to 6. They said they'll let me know, so I'm either going to my last one or I'm either going to my second-to-last, so uh yeah.
What if Okay. So, what Y'all put it on cool and it doesn't doesn't do anything?
That's what it do. It install it.
Hold.
All right. You guys just moving in?
Yeah, we just moved in, man.
Nice.
I think that's the wrong size filter.
Well, let's go outside and see what's going on.
All right. All right. All right. We're going to have to try to look for this leak.
But, I am going to add some more 410 with some nitrogen.
That way I get a better chance of finding that leak.
It might be a hisser.
It might not be.
Might be a hisser cuz it's so low.
It's almost It's basically empty.
So, it might be a big leak or it might be a leak that is a is a small leak and just um leaked out over time and nobody noticed because nobody was living here.
They're just now moving in.
This thing is leaking slowly.
Uh last time it was at 271 and it's barely now at 267, so it is leaking slowly.
All right, guys.
Hopefully we get that job. It'll be a smooth one. It looks like it'll be a smooth but let's um let's head on to the next one.
Okay, so I actually came back to one that that was frozen.
Um they said that the tenant was complaining. So I'm here now and probably I don't know what, 5 6 hours, so I'm hoping this thing is thawed out.
Probably not, but this is a heat pump, so it's probably thawed out enough for it to uh for me to get it on on heat mode if I need to.
But um I'm probably not going to record all the details, guys. I'm probably going to check pressures real quick and um >> [snorts] >> we'll go from there.
Okay, look at this. Definitely low charge. 53 suction pressure, head pressure 270, I'm sorry, 260.
Superheat 74.
Subcool is one, so definitely a low charge issue.
So hm great.
That's where the air handler is.
And I actually feel like I've been here before through another property management company.
So that's how you know they have all these contractors.
Goodness gracious, look.
>> [sighs] >> They had to cut the rafters.
>> [laughter] >> They had to trim down the the ceiling the roof rafters to get that in there, guys. It's crazy.
These old houses, man. These old houses.
Oh my gosh. I can't even lay my head in here.
Anyways, I think the leak is at the Schrader port in that coil.
Sorry, I'm holding up my camera with my hand.
So, most likely whoever did this probably did not put a wet rag.
And these idiots, I'm sorry. I'm not trying to curse. These guys, they just give you a not to exceed limit of 300, and they think I'm going to wait, call on the phone.
I'm not going to do that right now.
This is crazy.
This is crazy. They should have made a closet for this air handler.
Look how tight this is. This house doesn't even have insulation.
Guys, that's going that's going to be an expensive Schrader to change out.
But, that's all I got for today, guys.
So, tomorrow is Friday.
So, uh thank you guys for watching. God bless.
