On July 6, 1943, during the Battle of Kursk, Soviet pilot Lieutenant Alexey Solomatyn performed a heroic taring attack on a German Ju-88 bomber, sacrificing his aircraft to destroy the enemy plane. Despite his La-5 fighter catching fire and sustaining severe damage, Solomatyn managed to land safely on the bomber's fuselage. Remarkably, he returned to combat duty just one week later and went on to achieve 18 total aerial victories by the war's end, earning the Order of the Red Banner for his bravery.
