Stafford County I-95 crash driver now charged with felonies in deadly wreck

[00:00:00]The driver allegedly behind that deadly bus crash on I-95 has now been indicted by a grand jury.

[00:00:04]>> Jing Dong now facing five manslaughter charges for each of the five people who died in the crash early Friday morning.

[00:00:10]Fox 5's Bob Barnard reports that wasn't the only deadly crash on the same stretch of road this weekend.

[00:00:16]>> Seven people killed, nearly 50 others injured in less than 36 hours on I-95 here in Virginia. And now a grand jury here in Stafford County has indicted the 48-year-old tour bus driver from Staten Island for involuntary manslaughter in a vehicle and reckless driving.

[00:00:36]Jing Dong is still in custody in the hospital. Was supposed to go on trial in a Maryland [music] courtroom tomorrow for speeding while driving a bus in Anne Arundel County in the middle of the night back in March. Among the five people killed in Friday morning's crash was a family of four from Massachusetts.

[00:00:53]They died inside their car that caught fire. They were heading to a wedding in South Carolina. That crash was at 2:30 in the morning in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Quantico. Around 11:00 Saturday morning, two women were killed in a head-on collision on I-95 in Caroline County, south of Stafford.

[00:01:13]Virginia State Police say a southbound GMC Yukon driven by 58-year-old Deborah Parker of Fredericksburg crossed the median and crashed head-on into Shelly Owens Jeep Wrangler heading north on the interstate. Police say both women were killed. The driver of a third car was injured. Shelly Owens' daughter Olivia spoke to us this afternoon about the crash and her mom.

[00:01:40]Um we're just shocked. We're numb.

[00:01:43]Um we are trying to figure out, you know, questions still.

[00:01:49]Like why why it happened, why her.

[00:01:52]Um but we're just still grieving, going through the process right now. She really loved my sisters and I. She did a lot for us. Um she was a wonderful lady.

[00:02:06]Um Yeah, she was just she was amazing.

[00:02:09]>> Olivia says her mom had worked for the Raleigh, North Carolina Police Department and was about to interview for a job here with the Stafford County Sheriff's Office. Virginia State Police have not said why they believe the driver of that car that struck and killed Ms. Owens lost control or for matter why bus driver Jing Dong wasn't slowing down for a construction zone as the other traffic around him was at the time of Friday's crash. Again, he has just been indicted for involuntary manslaughter in a vehicle and reckless driving. No timeline for when he's going to be well enough to be released from the hospital, go to jail, and then make his first appearance in court.
