In character development, actors often draw from personal experiences and observations to create authentic, complex characters; Michelle Pfeiffer and Greg Kinnear discuss how they developed their roles in 'Margo's Got Money Troubles,' emphasizing that characters like Cheyenne (Pfeiffer) and Kenny (Kinnear) succeed through resilience, self-made determination, and genuine emotional depth rather than superficial traits.

Michelle Pfeiffer & Greg Kinnear On The Heart & Humor Of "Margo’s Got Money Troubles"本站添加:
Hello, my name is [music] Emma Sass and I'm with Next Best Picture. Hi Michelle and Greg, how are you today? Great, how are you?
>> Good.
I'm doing very, very well. Such a pleasure to [music] to speak with both of you. Congratulations on a very lovely series. Just finished it the other day and I'm so happy to talk to you about it. Um I mean Cheyenne and Kenny, they are kind of end game here. They may seem a little mismatched in certain parts, but I think that they are such a sweet couple.
What do you think it is about these two characters that on the surface they may not be the perfect match, but it seems like they can really work together in such beautiful ways?
I mean, is there really a perfect match?
You know, I don't um I'm not sure that actually exists. Uh and like they say, opposites do attract. I do think they um balance each other out and um I I know that for Cheyenne, you know, she is really wanting something different than what she's had. And I think she sees the good in him.
And I think she's ready to be loved.
Yeah, I well, if anybody has uh a more com- I think Cheyenne has a little more complexity with this relationship than Kenny. I think for Kenny it's a pretty clear through line until the end of the show where he's forced to kind of deal with some very heavy stuff, but you know, I just I loved the whole sense of how deeply in love he was and how that wasn't you know, like a charac- it wasn't made silly or kind of characterization. It was just genuine, real love and appreciation for another person, and I don't think he looks at the I know what you mean. They do seem like two different orbits of people, but but I don't think he sees that and uh uh considers himself really lucky and and um and I think the the how they handle in the writing and in the show the relationship and just kind of the unexpected surprises of the two of them really keeps you off off balance. You There's It's It's I surprised me when I read the scripts and it he surprised me when I saw the show.
I was going to mention, I mean, so much of a lot of the things that happen in in Margo's life and Cheyenne's life, their relationship, it does kind of seem to kind of go against this idea of what we have of Kenny as a very, you know, a very well-mannered man, somebody who is very religious, you know, very close to his faith, and yet he continues to to be there for them ex- until the end, where we kind of see a little bit of that dissonance there. Um you know, Greg, when you got to read that and really dive into this character, you know, what did that really tell you about him where some people they're not able to distance those those things, the their personal beliefs and you know, coming into somebody else's life, but he seems to be one of those, like you said, really good people who can do that and and wants to do that.
Yeah, I think uh I think he's um as I said, I I think he's welcomed as he's trying to kind of earn a place in the seat at the family and um I'm not sure he's fully at the adult table yet, but but he's trying to get there and and by the end of the the show, just when you think, "Wow, you know, um it it really wallops you. Um Um, and it's that too is dealt with, I think, with great uh, you know, really dealt nicely. I mean, I I I don't like the choices that Kenny makes a couple of times in this show and certainly there, but I do think that you know, he makes a justification for it and I think he believes that that he wants to protect her and wants to protect the family and wants to protect the baby and you know, maybe it's an overreach, but I don't think he's doing it out of anything malicious.
I mean, and if you think about it, what if he what if he had done nothing?
And God forbid, what if something happened, you know?
And that's I think what he's struggling with. That's the moral dilemma. He's, you know, he's he considers himself a moral person.
Um, and I think that's the moral dilemma that he's grappling with.
Again, not what I would have done, >> [laughter] >> but Once again, we have the Cheyenne-Kenny uh, drama sometimes. Um, I I find Cheyenne to be such a firecracker of a personality. I can imagine that this was a really fun character for you to to build off and expand upon. Um, there was one one time that Rupee came here and she said that specifically that was something that you really tasked yourself with and really thinking about who is this woman everything leading up to this point in time that we find ourselves in and I wanted to learn a little bit more about your connections to her, how you built her up and I heard something specifically with teeth that, you know, you kind of brought to the table with the character, too. I Well, I think Cheyenne is, you know, if if if it's going to make me look better, I mean, you know, look, I think she was dealt a really bad hand in this world. She came into this world with a really crappy hand and learned early on um how to play it.
Um and I think the number her ace in the hole was her looks.
And um I And I don't think any I don't think much else was really ever handed to her um from the day that she was born and I think she's self-made. She's a survivor.
Um I think she has a lot of um dignity.
And um So you know, she's just playing the hand she was dealt with and for as long as she can.
So uh there isn't any amount she's and she's not zero shame about it. Um So yeah. So I I thought, "Well, I don't know why. I just thought maybe she needs big old veneers."
Because she'd do that, you know? That's something she she'd be like, "You know, my smile could be better."
And um bigger the better, wider the better, and uh the first time I put them in my mouth, I I just I just screamed out laughing in the dentist's office.
>> [gasps] >> And I wore them though to the reading and nobody said anything. So I cuz I didn't want to I didn't want to look like a horse face either, you know? I mean, I I wanted them to be realistic in their absurdity. I I didn't want to So anyway, yeah, um that and um So >> I was going to say, I think on the self-made Cheyenne, to me, it's all true, you know? That was her ace in the hole, her beauty, and and and she is self-made, but I don't really I don't I think what's more fun about the show is I don't think she knows in her self-madeness the things that she's created in herself how much of an engine she is, you know? I think she I'm she doesn't know what she's created and and it's a beautiful thing because it's so un it's like driving a Ferrari and she doesn't know it's a Ferrari.
Yeah, I mean she's probably lucky she met Kani right about now cuz it's time to stop whatever she's doing. [laughter] It's time to stop.
These two they they need each other in their lives as we as we keep talking about this relationship, but that's that's so fascinating to hear about, you know, just becoming that person and just the different ways that you really can hone into a character. I I always love hearing things like that. Um of course the the kind of could the crux of this story as it relates to to Margo and her journey, in some ways your two characters are really quite as intimately involved with that. You kind of learn a little bit more about what she's doing behind closed doors later on in the series, but I I would love to know, you know, getting to be a part of this series, reading this book, I'm sure you learned a lot about, you know, this industry that she finds herself in. I and we get a lot of different reactions to it both from Cheyenne, Kenny, and a lot of different people in here. I guess I would just kind of love to know maybe some of the takeaways that you learned through through doing this.
Well, I didn't learn a ton cuz that really wasn't part of Cheyenne's world. I think the little the the um um it was better that I actually didn't know a lot about it, but what I did learn um is that I think immediately when you say only fans, you think, "Oh, porn, porn."
And um yeah, I guess there's porn that goes on there, but there's also it's like a it's like a platform and there's all kinds of things on OnlyFans.
And, I love I think it's just very interesting that the dreams that Margo made the decision to give up for this child, OnlyFans actually gave her the platform to actually continue that dream and that is to be a creator and to be a writer and she's creating worlds and characters and um, so it I I realized that, um, you know, there are all different kinds of ways to get to your dreams and this was one of them.
Yes, absolutely. Greg, did you get to learn a little bit or, you know, dive into this world in some way?
I'm not not really, no.
>> with it?
>> Yeah. Yeah, I'm familiar with it and, uh, you know, um, I guess I um, I'm from Indiana. I know this uh, these some of these folks and as we all do and I think, uh, you know, look, there was, uh, yeah, I mean, there's a very soft, lovely side to this guy that I appreciated and it was just trying to keep him on the Mhm. side from feeling like a character, so. Yeah. Absolutely.
Um, I did want to say congratulations. I just learned of the renewal for season 2. Yay, I love that.
>> me not to spill the beans and everybody's just the beans have been spilled apparently. [laughter] >> Well, they're announcing it, I think.
Yes, I heard them.
>> you. Yeah, but this is also going to be Oh, okay, then you're doing this later.
Yeah.
>> Yes, exactly.
>> Okay, okay.
>> Yes, yes.
>> Got it.
>> I I I I I I kind of just would love to know, you know, maybe where you envision Cheyenne and Kenny because we kind of end on a little bit of a rough book patch with their relationship. Kind of where you see the story continuing for them.
>> I have no idea. I have no idea where they're going to take this. It could go in so many fun directions, but I do they have a lot of work to do.
That I do know.
>> [laughter] >> Yes.
It's a very deep hole Kenny is in. An extremely deep hole and So did Kenny just think maybe they won't find out it was me. Is that kind [laughter] of what was going through his head?
Yeah.
>> Yeah, I mean that he would have had to live with that secret, too, right?
>> Yeah, he would have, yeah. Yeah, that would have been an awkward >> have been one. Hey, what are you thinking about, Kenny? Nothing. Nothing.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, we were >> we get to explore now.
>> Yes, exactly. Man, there's a lot of questions.
>> [laughter] >> Yes.
Well, my time is up. Thank you both so very much for your time. I've always been such admirers of your work. So, what a pleasure to meet you and to talk with you.
>> Thank you so much.
Thank you. Enjoy your day. Thank you.
