High pressure systems create warm, stable conditions across a region, while approaching frontal boundaries can trigger thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning, causing rapid temperature fluctuations from the 90s to the 60s within a single day.

Evening weather forecast, May 12Added:
Doesn't matter where you travel around the state today. Woohoo, it was warm.
You went outside and it just felt like June, July.
>> Yeah. You know in the summertime, that heat just hits you and we've got one more warm day, but tomorrow's going to come with a bit of a twist, a little wind and chance for some thunderstorms.
This is Promontory Range up northern Utah. Paul Stout capturing a beautiful sunset and man, I'll tell you the sunsets are gorgeous, the heat is on.
Wasn't just Salt Lake that broke records today. Take a look at this. Kanab, 95° today, broke the record for the date.
Provo BYU, 94, did the same. We told you about Salt Lake's 93. Wellington, Carbon County, 92. Tooele went to 91. Scipio, 91. And Alta today, broke a daily record. They were 75°.
Now, they've closed for the year, but you try keeping snow on a mountain when it's 75° out there. That is not easy and the melt, ooh, it's on. Now, waterways, even though it's a diminished snowpack, the rivers are still running cold, so be careful if you're out and about around any of those waterways. 93 in Salt Lake, how about 104 in Las Vegas, 108 in Phoenix, Albuquerque to 91. A little more manageable temperatures off to the east, 70s for Denver and all the way up to Great Falls, but everybody in the west is really warm, compliments of a big ridge of high pressure. It is still 68 in Logan, 79 Salt Lake with 60s in Blanding, but 84 in Moab and still 92° in St. George at 10:00. 96 in Las Vegas.
You're seeing a little bit of precipitation. That's actually moisture that's circulating around the periphery of the high and that high has now moved over Utah and is currently kind of hanging out to the south. So, I'll show you what we're dealing with.
The high's around the four corners.
There's a little mini low forming off the California coast, an approaching low off the Pacific Northwest and there's a little disturbance, a little frontal boundary that's just waiting to come in and that will arrive tomorrow. So, the high pressure kind of moves off to the east. It will draw in some moisture around the periphery of the high, then this little frontal boundary comes in and tomorrow afternoon we could get some pop-up thunderstorms, some gusty winds.
That little front goes by and we'll say goodbye to the 90s. It'll drop right back into the 70s and 80s as we head on through. Then that clears things out and we're looking at a nice end of the week with sunshine. But we're going on a bit of a roller coaster ride. Now I want to show you the convective outlook for tomorrow. The light green says, "Hey, there's the potential for thunderstorms really statewide with a marginal chance of some thunderstorms for northern Utah." So we're going to see some pops tomorrow, especially I think in the higher elevations. So we have put a chance of some storms into Richfield, Price, and Nephi. 30% chance dry thunderstorms. There may be a little bit of precipitation, but I think the biggest risk is going to be the lightning with these storms. 94 in St. George tomorrow, so down from the 100s.
And then we kind of settle into the 90s through Saturday, then drop to the 60s for Sunday and Monday, a little closer to normal, but some strong winds tomorrow. As that little frontal boundary approaches, southern Utah is going to see some gusty winds. You can see all the lightning strikes around Montpelier, Logan, Heber City, West Valley. Temperatures still get into the low 90s compliments of some of the south wind before those afternoon storms really materialize. But then we'll go from the 90s to the 70s behind that front. Then we just kind of waffle back and forth 70s, 80s, and even a few 60s as we roll through the weekend. So it's not often you see 60s and 90s all in a single stretch. Overnight lows go from 60s to the 40s. So we're going on a ride and it's going to be an up and down one for sure. My air conditioning {slash} heating unit is confused right now.
>> you do? I know. Thanks, Kev.
>> You're welcome.
