This analysis skillfully maps the transformation of private trauma into a public political weapon, proving that rage is the only logical response to a totalizing patriarchy. It offers a sharp look at how individual acts of vengeance can effectively destabilize even the most rigid power structures.

AGNES'S ULTIMATE BETRAYAL, DAISY & BECKA'S REVENGE | THE TESTAMENTS EPISODE 9 EXPLAINED | HANDMAID'SAdded:
Episode 9 was a literal massacre. It didn't take long to jump into utter chaos. From Daisy's wild idea to Becca's violent revenge to Agnes backstabbing Becca and throwing her to the wolves, episode 9 took our characters for a turning point that there is truly no coming back from.
Welcome to Screen Coven. We've been expecting you.
What just happened?
I have watched episode 9 twice now and I'm a little speechless. How are you guys doing? Are you holding on? Okay.
From the moment the episode starts, we see the Pearl girls mopping blood off the floor. The show was very intentional here not to show us what happened, who they were punishing. It feels like there must be some reveal coming from that later. We hear Daisy in narration and she's telling us about how Gilead takes the Old Testament so seriously. The punishments of it, the cruelty of Gilead can feel incredibly overwhelming at first, but then she starts to appreciate the power within it, the revenge within it. And from this moment, we know she is about to do something that she won't be able to come back from. We just didn't know quite what that would be. Before we get too much further into what I feel like was one of the greatest female rage episodes of television I've ever seen.
There's another scene at the beginning of this episode. It's pretty quick. It's Aunt Bodala and Aunt Lydia, and they're talking about the fact that Commander Maddox hasn't been matched with anybody again this season. And you know what? At first, when I heard this, of course, just coming off of a scene with Daisy, my first thought is, "Oh no, they're going to try to marry Daisy to Commander Maddox." And that could still be the case. But we actually learned something interesting from this scene. If you pause on Commander Maddox's file, you'll notice a couple of things. One, this man has had two children. And note that this says from Gilead or before. the fact that this man appears to be just kind of a drunk. We haven't heard of him having kids. I mean, I I think that if he had children and Becca was set to potentially be his new wife, the fact that he has kids would have came up if she was then going to, you know, be their new mom. So, these kids were either pregill kids or they were taken from him at some point. And also when we look at his file, we notice that it says married, not widowed or not even single, but married as if he currently still is married. That also seems incredibly weird. And then if you look at the paper here to the left of it, this paper is a patient form about someone else. This is not actually about Commander Maddox. You can verify this for sure by looking at the birth dates. They're different years. This to me appears to be some sort of patient form. Like it's incredibly hard to read it. I've tried many times. I've tried taking screenshots, uploading it to, you know, the internet to see if like Google could read it. The name on here is just so unclear to tell. And if we could read it, there's definitely some interesting medical information that I think could give us clues. You can see there's a bunch of checked boxes here. So, at the moment, it's a little unclear to know what this means. Was this scene supposed to be a foreshadowing that Daisy will marry him? Or were they trying to give us this purposeful information? I mean, they opened the file and literally paused on it for several seconds. I need to take some more time to think about what this could mean. Maybe this will lead to another video. I don't know.
This could also be some really weird hint that this guy is Daisy's real father. I don't know. What do you guys think? It was just too intentional of a scene about a very unimportant character for it not to mean something. We then see what is supposed to be a joyful moment in the series. Daisy announces her period to the aunts and the plum girls get to plum her up. It was this brief moment that felt like Daisy was actually going to have some power in this world. She could potentially become someone. She could get deeper on the inside than ever before for Mayday. But sadly, that lasted not even like a whole scene before the whole thing fell apart.
Right after Daisy gets to change into her plum outfit, Aunt Estee tells her that Dr. Grove has an immediate opening and she'll take her to the dentist.
Agnes, of course, worried about Daisy, asked to go with her and Aunt Estee agrees. While at the dentist, everything appears to be going normally. Dr. Grove isn't making any attempts at Daisy. And I do think this is really important to note because Dr. Grove isn't an idiot.
He has been abusing these girls for what we can imagine is a very long time. He's targeting the girls who have been conditioned their entire lives not to say anything in situations like this to be terrified and feel shameful of them.
He knows not to pick Daisy. He knows that could lead to trouble for him. As he wraps up the appointment and is about to send Daisy on her way, she panics.
This can't be. She was expecting him to do something to her. So, she had a reason for revenge. Obviously, because Daisy just became a plum a matter of hours ago, and she had no idea that she was going to be sent here to Dr. Gro's office right now. We can likely assume she had very little time to think about what she was going to do to him. So, her next move is one that is definitely impulsive. She rips off her dress strap, rips her shirt open, and starts screaming. She runs out of the room, goes to Aunt Estee, goes to the other men in the room, explains that Dr. Grove abused her, and begs for forgiveness.
The look on Dr. Grove's face was truly priceless. This scene was so unbelievable. I expected Daisy to do something really out there. I expected her to honestly be the one to attack Dr. Grove in this scenario, but the way that this was written was amazing. Careless and incredibly dangerous. Yes, completely. Arguably a very stupid move for someone in Mayday to do or anyone for that matter. But at the same time, she's right. No one else is truly fighting for these girls. No one else is truly standing up for them. And she wasn't going to let Dr. Grove lay another hand on any of them. And whether this was incredibly stupid and reckless or not, I love Daisy for this. Of course, Aunt Vidala tried to insist that maybe she was confused. She must just not understand things. Afidala is such an interesting character truly to me because there are so many times where she's like weirdly crying about things that are happening and she seems like she's more connected to people and by her past with Aunt Lydia that we learned in the stadium episode episode 6 where Aunt Lydia was basically ordered to kill Aunt Vidala and she willingly went through with it. It just didn't happen because it was actually a setup by Jud.
the gun wasn't actually loaded, but she did it. And unless Aunt Fidala was making all of this up in the moment, like she actually did know that this wasn't going to happen and was just acting, which I don't think so. I think she really thought her life was going to end in this moment. It's amazing to me how Avidala could have this event happen and not just have this deep need to be a part of Mayday if she isn't in Mayday.
Anyways, her character is just such an interesting one. Obviously, I really think we just got a brief taste of her backstory and there's probably a lot more to come. Okay, so Afidala is trying to gaslight Daisy and Daisy, of course, is like, "No, I know what sin looks like."
That part was kind of funny, but I love her confidence coming through. You know, she is not going to let them tell her that her experiences aren't real. I will say, I know that this was a really like heated scenario and Daisy didn't go into this planning what was going to happen.
So, it it just explains why she's not really handling things, I guess you could say, in a great way. But one of the next scenes we have is Agnes is talking to Daisy about what happened.
And Agnes is starting to come on to Daisy. She realizes that you're not like other Pearl girls doing what you did, saying these things to the aunts about Dr. Grove. Whether true or not, they could destroy Daisy. They could ruin everything she's worked for to come into Gilead. Why is she doing this? Why is she even here? And of course, Daisy is a little defensive about it. You know, she's like, "Dr. Grove hurt you and Holda." And Agnes has to remind her, "And he hurt you, too, right?" And Daisy does say yes, but I'll say it's not very convincing. And when she eventually admits this to G, he is so furious with her. She's putting Mayday in jeopardy.
She's putting everything they worked for at risk. And I can't wait to see how June will react to this. Although, I do really love how when Daisy was speaking with the aunts, after Aunt Lydia told Aunt Vidala and Aunt Estee to please leave, I really got the vibe that Aunt Lydia was not angry with Daisy in any way over this, that if anything, she was a little like, "Thanks for taking care of it." And I at least appreciated her response. Although any happiness that I felt over her response in this scene quickly diminished when she met with Jud later on. They're talking about what's happening and Aunt Lydia is explaining about how there have also been other people who have come forward about him, other girls, and that this is something they definitely have to take care of with Dr. Grove. Thankfully, Commander Jud does agree. He suggests that the girls can take care of it. But the part that annoyed me was when Aunt Lydia suggested that maybe they can keep the whole thing quiet until after Becca gets married. just to kind of help her reputation. I'm sure that's a very justified thing in the world of Gilead.
That probably is for the best for Becca in her eyes at least. But that to me was very frustrating. But thankfully that didn't last for very long because what came next will probably be known as one of the most epic scenes in all of television this year. It will absolutely be hard to beat in any future episodes of the series. Becca is such an amazing character, but her storyline this season has really been quite unfortunate. She's been absolutely tortured by what's to come, by her future marriage, by her role as a wife, by everything it means to become a woman in Gilead. When she first learned what Daisy did, she is so angry. She of course doesn't believe her. She calls her evil. But when Agnes confirms with Becca that it's not a lie, that Dr. Grove, Becca's dad, did this to her, too. That is what it took to have Becca reach her breaking point. And later that night, we see her go into her father's bathroom where he is lying with his eyes closed in the bath and she stabs him to death. And I don't know if there has been a scene in television in which I have been so equally ecstatic and terrified all at once because Becca is not a character that I want to see bad things happen to. But this was also one of the most incredible acts of revenge. And I am also so proud of her.
While still covered in her father's blood, Becca grabs a Martha outfit and sneaks out of the house. It's dark out.
There are Martha's down the street who are about to get on the bus. She joins them. And of course, where does Becca go? Agnes's house. When she arrives, Zilla quickly wakes Agnes out of bed to greet Becca. You can tell that Agnes is just devastated, trying to figure out how to process what is even happening.
What did Becca do? And as she slowly learns the truth, it appears that the fear of all of it was just too much for her. She of course shows her best friend kindness and love. And Becca suggests that they should run away together. And when Agnes lies and says that she's going to go tell Zilla to get some clean clothes, what she really does is she tells her parents, she tells Commander McKenzie and Paula. And the next thing we see is them with G escorting Becca out of the house. And we see the eyes take her away. Okay, this is where I have so many questions. I mean, first of all, I guess I'll just say I'm absolutely devastated that Agnes sent Becca away. And I know, I know Agnes was terrified. She had no idea what to do.
And she even says to her father, "I thought you were going to send her to the doctor." I get it. Agnes doesn't know any better. So, I'm not necessarily blaming her, but I'm still just very frustrated. She should have known what would happen to her. Becca killed her father. I mean, what do you think? You know, so regardless, um, I love Agnes, but I'm still angry. Okay, who the heck were these eyes? I mean, they were even referred to as eyes. Agnes said, "You called the eyes, so we know that's who they were." But you guys, these look like women. We have never seen female eyes in the Handmaid's Tail series. What is this that we're seeing? And who are they? Could these be the aunts? Are they wives? Are they a mix of random women throughout Gilead who, you know, just don't expose their identity so that they can have like a secret network? Do they all work for Aunt Lydia? And where are they going? Could somehow this actually be Mayday infiltrating? Would they have usually sent men who were eyes, but somehow Aunt Lydia was able to intervene and was like, "No, I'm sending my girls in." I have so many questions. And also, um, female eyes. That's really cool.
Gilead has made some interesting changes since we left them in the Handmaid's Tail. And I wonder if any of the reason for this could possibly be because, you know, the war with Mayday, of course, has just been increasing and increasing.
In the different rumblings we've heard about Mayday this season, we know that Gilead has lost several more commanders just recently. even there have been multiple attacks and they're constantly pulling more commanders to go to the front lines. I'm starting to wonder if Gilead doesn't have that many men anymore. And you know, when I think about the births that we've had in The Handmaid's Tale that we've at least seen, they're largely female. This is also making me wonder if maybe boys aren't really being born much anymore.
So, just kind of in general, all the men are being killed off in the war and they're not really repopulating any new ones. Of course, if they are, they would still be children. It's a very interesting thing. In a couple of other videos where I've been theorizing what might happen at the end of this season, there's a scene that I've talked about that I know is coming up now in episode 10 since we still haven't seen it yet and there's only one episode left. And that's June talking to someone outside.
She's very upset and she's saying, "You will not screw this up for me, young lady." And I've been theorizing that she's speaking with Daisy. And I mean, I still think that's very likely after this episode because Daisy went absolutely rogue. So, of course, June probably needs to come in now and put Daisy in her place, so to speak. But another theory that I've had in my head that hasn't felt fully justified until this episode is that what if June is actually speaking with Becca? I realize that Becca obviously has some intense trauma and we've been seeing her break all season. So, some of you might say, "Hey, she has been really struggling and finding out that her dad did this thing to her best friend and possibly more of her friends. I'm not surprised that she did this." But I like to analyze everything from different perspectives.
So, there is another part of me that goes, "Was that really enough to break her?" If Becca had seemingly had an amazing relationship with her dad up until now, which they didn't really give us an indication that he had been abusing her, I think it's still likely.
We just never got any real proof or confirmation of that. So, we're saying that she seemingly had a great relationship with her dad. Sure, she has been struggling with the fact that she's about to be married off, but heck, she got to choose G. I mean, that's probably the greatest scenario she ever could have possibly gotten herself in. So, in some ways, should things have been looking up for her almost? Of course, Agnes telling her this is devastating.
But does it really make sense that she went from hearing that to immediately deciding to kill her dad? I don't know.
So, just as one theory that I'm going to put out is that what if Becca had actually been working with Mayday all this time? Maybe even working with Aunt Lydia. I mean, you know, her dad not being an actual commander. She doesn't get the same privileges as other girls get in Gilead. They don't have the same level of money. I could see Mayday being able to get to her a lot easier, or at least Aunt Lydia getting to her and working with her in some way. And if that is the case, then this action by Becca starts to make a little bit more sense. So then the reason that I bring this up is because what if that scene with June where she's talking to someone, it's not Daisy, but this is in fact Becca somehow whether these are the eyes or not. Whether maybe it's just one person in here that's Mayday and manages to get Becca out. They're getting her out and taking her to June. And that's kind of when we learn that Becca had been working for Mayday for years. And she's been dreaming about a life outside of Gilead all this time because that might actually be a possibility for her.
You know, that's why she's always talking about running away. That's why she says she can at one point because she feels like it actually might be an option for her. It's interesting. I think I just don't want anything bad to actually happen to Becca. So, I'm trying to think of any possible way we can make that happen. Another thing to theorize about on this is that book spoilers ahead. Becca does not kill her father, but she does have an unfortunate event and it leads to Aunt Lydia actually taking her in and helping her train to be an aunt. And it's a really wonderful storyline because for the first time ever, Becca is allowed to read. She's allowed to read the Bible. She's allowed to understand these stories that she's been told her whole life for herself.
And she starts to become educated on what Gilead truly is. And so all of this does make me wonder, maybe these are in fact female eyes and Becca will get put through some sort of a trial. Now, with Becca being fertile, I wouldn't expect Gilead to want to just get rid of her. I could definitely see them doing something kind of like they did to Emily back in the Handmaid's Tale and forcing her to be a handmmaid. Honestly, that seems like a very likely scenario, but we're not in the Handmaid's Tale series exactly, right? We're in the Testaments in this series. I do think it's possible for Aunt Lydia to basically argue that Becca has been so traumatized. This horrific thing happened to these girls and that Becca shouldn't be punished.
She actually needs help. And the way she can do that is well, I don't know, you know, serving God as an aunt or something. I could see that happening.
If it does happen though, it seems pretty crazy because Becca did kill her father. That wasn't just a little thing.
So, as we go into episode 10, I can't wait to see whatever it is that Daisy and Agnes do to protect her, to try to help Becca. As the episode description explains, it's important to note that at the very beginning of the series, in the first episode, we hear Agnes acknowledge that all of the story she's talking about happens before she met her real birthother. And that once that happened, everything she knows changes. And I, for one, am holding out all of my hopes that season 1 won't end without Agnes and June having some sort of connection revealed. I don't think they can meet each other yet. That just feels like way too much. I'm sure the series is going to make us wait a lot longer for that.
But we absolutely need the reveal of Agnes finally knowing who her mom really is and Daisy knowing that Agnes is June's daughter. Oh my gosh, you guys.
This episode was insane in all the most amazing ways. Um, I want to give it an award for some of the best female rage I've ever seen on television. This show is so incredible. I expected great things going into it, but I don't think I ever could have expected what we actually have been getting. Thank you guys so much for joining me today for another episode of Screen Coven. Don't you worry, just because the Testaments has only one more episode to go doesn't mean my Testaments content is going to stop. I have so many more videos planned and I'll make sure to keep releasing them even after the season ends. So, if you liked this video, please make sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel so that you'll be notified about future videos.
