York Sightseeing Day! Dungeon, Shambles, City Walls & MORE!

[00:00:00]Hi everyone and welcome back to the Sam Brook Adventures and my little minieries here from York. Been having an absolutely fantastic day. So if you haven't already, make sure you check out the two previous vlogs already on this channel. The first one from the awesome Yorvik Viking Center, absolutely fantastic Viking Museum that's also got a 15minute long dark ride inside with loads of fantastic theming, animatronics, and so much more. It's very immersive. So join me for that vlog if you haven't already. And along with that, I also did a full tour of the brilliant National Railway Museum. It's incredible there. There's so much to see, all the different locomotives, all the history on display. Had an awesome time. And yeah, in this vlog, just going to have a bit of a stroll around York and also go into the York Dungeon as well. Now, I won't be able to film inside the dungeon, but I will film a bit of a review. We'll have a look in the shop. They're actually celebrating a milestone this year, 40 years of the York Dungeon. So, you know, May always like the dungeon attractions. We'll give this one a go. I've not done it for quite a few years, actually. Have a bit of a walk around the historic York City walls as well. You can see the walls here all behind me. Looks really beautiful with all the flowers, doesn't it? Have a little walk down by the river, go to York Minster, and also have a stroll around one of my favorite places, the Shambles, which is a beautifully preserved medieval street here in the city of York. So, come and join me. How nice is this down here by the river?

[00:01:25]I just love this city. one of my favorite place to come and explore here in the UK. And it's been some time since I've been to York, so it's been really good kind of going back in these attractions and seeing everything.

[00:01:39]Lovely down by the river.

[00:01:42]>> And yeah, you can take a boat trip down the river as well. City cruise boat trip. Don't think I'm going to have time for that this afternoon. I've already packed in a lot though today. And yeah, I've got my book in for in about 15 minutes down at the York Dungeons. Yeah, this is owned by Miller Miller Entertainment. It's the same company that owns a lot of our big theme parks and other various attractions like the London Eye, Mad Swords.

[00:02:06]And this is celebrating 40 years. It's been about 5 years, I'd say, since I did the dungeon here. So, I'm very much looking forward to it. All the city walls, you can walk around all the way around York >> on the historic city walls. And yeah, the shambles is just spectacular. It's one of the best kind of examples still remaining of a medieval street in Europe.

[00:02:28]>> It's something really special down there >> and the inspiration for >> Harry Potter, of course, and Diagon Alley. So, yeah, it's somewhere really special.

[00:02:38]But yeah, first we're going to make our way down to the dungeon. Let's go. About a 10-minute walk from this point. This is really pretty, isn't it? With all the flowers.

[00:02:47]Beautiful looking out over the river here. All the little pubs.

[00:02:52]the waterfront views. Yeah, the dungeon is just around the corner.

[00:02:58]>> Going to head up to there now.

[00:03:02]>> Yeah, if you do have a Merlin annual pass, that does include entry into the dungeon. So, >> you get entry to all the different Merlin attractions across the UK. Yeah, it is great.

[00:03:12]>> You can go into the dungeons as well with that.

[00:03:16]>> Now, if you've never done one of the dungeons before, I'll just explain kind of what it is. It's an immersive walkthrough experience where you go through various different rooms and scenes with actors. It's very interactive as well. They'll get you involved and joining in with bits as well. So, it's all good fun.

[00:03:35]And yeah, you learn a lot along the way as well. And this is in this beautiful building. Look at all the detail on the building itself, like on the top and everything. Yeah. Over the years, I've had a few issues with flooding here at the York Dungeon with it being so close to the river, but they've always managed to bounce back and rebuild and get the water out. Yeah. 40 years of screams.

[00:03:58]1986 this opens. Yeah. We're going to go through all these different scenes, 10 live shows, 2,000 years of history, 75 minutes of fun. Yeah. 75 minute long attraction. We're going to go to York Minster, Vengeance of the Vikings, The Plague Doctor, City Ghosts, Guyforks, The Torture Chamber, The Courtroom, Execution, Curse of the Witch, and also Dick's Back. [laughter] So, yeah, we're going to go make our way in there. Now, I won't be able to film anything inside.

[00:04:29]Any kind of photography is strictly prohibited, but I will give you a review when I come out of the York Dungeon.

[00:04:35]Well, I've just come out of the York Dungeon, and I've got to say, it was absolutely amazing. really enjoyed getting back in that attraction for the first time in quite a few years. It is my favorite out of all the dungeons here in the UK. I think what really makes it are the size of the scenes in there because the rooms are quite small and the theming's heavy. You do feel fully immersed in there. I used to love like the original Tulie Street London dungeon. Uh that was my favorite.

[00:05:00]Unfortunately, they closed it a long time ago now and built it in a new location and it lost that feel. With the York Dungeon, it's got that feel because it's so tight. It's so small when you're going through all the different rooms, but also some of the sets are quite tall as well, so you get some really good theme pieces in there to look at. The scares are also great in some of the scenes, but also it's fun. It's interactive. I got picked out for the torturer scene where I had to sit like on the chair and they brought loads of different instruments over. You got the plague doctor in there as well where someone gets p pulled out in this version here. Of course, we're in York.

[00:05:34]So, you've got like a scene which is set in the minster which is excellent. I love the theming in there. And then at the end, you've got uh Dick Turpin, which is like a carriage ride. And it doesn't actually move anywhere. It just shakes side to side, but because of the sound effects and everything and what the actors do around you, it makes you feel like it's actually moving across, which is great. They do a really good job with that. And that's my favorite scene in there. Along with that, there's a witch scene which is really intense. I was on the front row for that. So, I was in like the heart of the action. It is so good though. It's that perfect mix between fun, a little bit scary, some big jump scares, and atmospheric in there, but they do such a great job. And yeah, all the actors were amazing in there as well. So, if you've never done it before, I would definitely recommend the York Dungeon or any of the dungeons that we've got here, not just in the UK, but there's a few, you know, around Europe as well. And yeah, they're all great, but this one for me has got the best atmosphere in there as well. But yeah, it's just because of the building.

[00:06:27]It's so tight. It's so small in there. I mean, you go through all these rooms and yeah, you're just fully immersed in It was great. And I think straight away what sets the scene is the fact it's in such a great building and then you kind of go right down to the bottom of it.

[00:06:40]Utilize all the space in there. The best they can do. Amazing. That was sightseeing bus going by. And yeah, we're going to have a walk around to the shambles now.

[00:06:50]And here's a map looking at York City Center. Everything that I've done, not just in this vlog, but in the past couple of videos prior to this, has all been walking distance. So, like I say, I got a park and ride, got the bus in. It only took about 10 minutes and it cost £4 for a return trip as well which is great. See I'm right here in the center.

[00:07:07]Now the Orvik Viking Center that was just down there. Of course the dungeon here on the side and the railway museum just over here. So yeah, that took about 15 minutes to walk to. And yeah, of course you got the city walls all the way around the side. We'll have a walk [music] around then and we'll go and see York Minster as well which will be nice. I'll probably have a little walk around the walls down here by the minster and get some views of that a little bit later. A bit of the shambles [music] is just round here to the right. Let's go. Bit of live music on this afternoon here in York to the shambles.

[00:07:48]There are some really cool buildings in York. Like look at this one here. It's like it's kind of sinking in the middle.

[00:07:54]It's the York Gin Shop.

[00:07:58]Right next door there's a Pizza Hut. And the Greg's on that side, [laughter] the Golden Fleece pub just there.

[00:08:07]And if we take a left around here, this leads up to the Shambles. See how one of the best examples that still remains in Europe of a medieval street. Like this is just amazing. It's over 900 years old, the Shambles.

[00:08:22]Yeah, it's always cool having a walk down here.

[00:08:26]>> Quite a few little shops as well.

[00:08:29]>> The shop that must not be named.

[00:08:35]And yeah, the street that very much inspired Diagon Alley, all the little shops.

[00:08:44]>> So, I can't wish for any of that. And like, [snorts] sure, I could wish like >> Yeah, look at this.

[00:08:51]Got the Nutcracker Christmas Shop. I'll have a look in there in a second. We'll walk a bit further down and then I'll uh head inside there and have a look in the Christmas shop.

[00:09:20]>> Oh, cupcakes in there. Punny jukes. Is it >> the ear gray tea rooms?

[00:09:35]>> Wow. Yeah, this is like that iconic shot.

[00:09:39]If you both leaned out of the windows on either side, you could probably just about shake hands. Maybe there jewelry, mint bar, chocolate.

[00:09:58]>> Yeah, really nice around here. All the little shops and pubs queuing up to go in there.

[00:10:06]You know, it must be a good shop when it's got a Q-ine set up.

[00:10:10]>> Roll this fudge pantry.

[00:10:14]>> Oh, I love a bit of fudge.

[00:10:17]>> Chocolate orange fudge. That's my favorite. I quite like the standard fudge as well.

[00:10:30]>> Yeah. Let's go and have a look in [music] the Christmas shop.

[00:10:33]Oh, what's going on around there? Oh, something happening on a little stage around there. Some sort of presentation.

[00:10:40]It's just started to rain. Oh, wow. Look at that.

[00:10:50]Why you know me, I love Christmas. Have a look inside the Nutcracker Christmas shop here at the Shambles in York.

[00:11:17]What a great Christmas shop. We've got another one like round the corner as well that I've been in before, but I think I've been in this one. What a great setup.

[00:11:27]Love how all the floors creek in these older buildings as well.

[00:11:32]>> Oh, that was great there in the Christmas shop. Going to have a stroll around to the other one shortly. It's not here in the shambles, but it's only about a 5minute walk away.

[00:11:43]That fudge smells so good from in there.

[00:11:45]But yeah, it's amazing down here. Really like it.

[00:12:06]And there's this plaque on the wall that's here as well talking about the ancient street of the butchers of York mentioned in the Doomsday Book of William the Conqueror.

[00:12:28]>> Some sort of presentation.

[00:12:31]>> And you got York's chocolate story here as well.

[00:12:36]>> There it is. I did a video from there a few years ago. I say a few years ago. I think that might have been 2018. So, seven years ago. And yeah, it's like a guided tour through York's chocolate story.

[00:12:58]>> Let's have a stroll down this way.

[00:13:00]>> Yeah, >> so many nice shops around here. And then of course, York Minster.

[00:13:07]What a place. Love it.

[00:13:10]Oh, Thomas the Baker over there. They're good. And Coupins as well. I actually went to Coupins earlier on. Thomas the Baker is pretty good. Yeah, Coupins is my favorite. Fantastic.

[00:13:25]This whole area is just beautiful. So many nice little shops, pubs, restaurants, little cafes.

[00:13:33]The floral display there. Stunning.

[00:13:40]Yeah, whilst we're down this way, we're going to have a look out the front of York Minster.

[00:13:45]>> York sweet shop. Packed a lot in today.

[00:13:48]>> Action packed.

[00:13:50]>> Great plane.

[00:13:54]>> Sock shop down here.

[00:13:58]>> Like look at the detail just on the corner of that shop there.

[00:14:04]>> Stone gates.

[00:14:10]>> And yeah, we got the Christmas shop down here. It's a German Christmas shop, this one. I've been in here quite a lot over the years. It's really nice.

[00:14:19]Hopefully, it's still open. Like I say, it is a Sunday today, so it's not as busy around here as it normally would be, but I think it might be open till 5:00 because it's quite a small shop.

[00:14:27]Hopefully, [snorts] it'll uh still be open. Fingers crossed.

[00:15:02]>> Fantastic. Look at the building that this is set in as well.

[00:15:06]Remember sometimes seeing like a queue set up to go in here. Oh yeah, look at that.

[00:16:08]>> Look how incredible the inside of the shop is. All the low beams and everything here. I'm upstairs now. It's phenomenal.

[00:16:16]Brilliant as always inside there. Like an incredible shop to walk around. Right next door you got the teddy bear shop just here.

[00:16:26]There's all sorts of old funky things to see and I love it.

[00:16:32]Even like all the hand painted signs.

[00:16:34]Unfortunately, that one's closed already. I'm glad that this was open though, to be fair. I didn't know if it would be by the time I got down here.

[00:16:41]>> Yeah, I packed in a lot today. Viking Museum, the dungeon, the railway museum.

[00:16:49]Brilliant day. Shop window displays are awesome there as well.

[00:16:54]Yeah, we'll go and head down towards York Minster now.

[00:17:02]>> York's oldest licensed in the old Star in.

[00:17:08]>> It's funny. It's got that big sign going all the way across. And the entrance is quite hidden, isn't it? Just there on the left hand side.

[00:17:20]And here we are just around the corner at the iconic and historic York Minster.

[00:17:26]Been a place of worship for over 1,400 years.

[00:17:31]Doing quite a bit of restoration on the rose window around there at the side.

[00:17:38]Very impressive, isn't it?

[00:17:43]It >> looks really beautiful around here at the front.

[00:17:47]>> So, that's where we'll go and head around.

[00:17:51]>> Here we are around here at the front where you can see all the detail on there.

[00:17:58]>> Wow.

[00:18:00]>> Yeah. When I arrived off the bus earlier on from the park and ride, the bells were chiming as well, which is really nice.

[00:18:16]>> You just look at how much detail there is on there. We'll stand a little bit further back just so we can appreciate it even more. With something like this, I always think it's better if you look from further back.

[00:18:45]I'll >> have to do a tour round again at some point in the future. Have been in there before, but not for quite a long time.

[00:18:52]But yeah, I'm pretty hungry tonight now.

[00:18:53]I don't I think it might be possibly closed now for tours round this evening anyway. But yeah, going to go and get some food shortly whilst I'm here in York.

[00:19:38]And this is actually one of my favorite shots of York Minster with the trees in the front just there.

[00:19:47]Really, really nice.

[00:19:56]And it wouldn't be a trip here to York without having to walk around the historic city walls. I have done the walk all the way around before which is really nice. You go like over the gate houses and some bits you have to come down then go back up again and stuff, but yeah, it's a really nice walk doing the full thing. Not going to do the full walk around tonight cuz I'm pretty hungry. But yeah, going to head in this direction and head to Weather Spoons down here. not had spoons for like five, six weeks, which is rare for us. Like we love weather spoons, so I'm looking forward to it. Well, I say that we did go with some friends who had the spoons the other night back in Staffordshire and uh yeah, we ended up going somewhere else because they had no chips. [laughter] Yeah, that was the walk that I did earlier down to the railway museum.

[00:20:47]And you get a really nice perspective from up here looking over the city.

[00:21:02]I like these parts that are just exposed here and you get that view looking down.

[00:21:08]So yeah, if we carry on all the way along this section, it bends round to the left when we get up to this corner and the pub's going to be down in that direction there.

[00:21:22]Yeah, done a lot of walking, a lot of sightseeing. It's been a really good day. I've enjoyed it a lot. You might also be thinking, where's Charlotte and George been in the past few videos?

[00:21:31]Basically, last night I went to Kin, an event in Bishop, Oakland, and it was on really late. And yeah, it wouldn't have really been great for George with it being on that late. So, Charlotte and George stayed at home. They've been with family and doing a few other bits. And then, yeah, I stayed over up this way last night. So I thought, what can I do on my way back to Staffordshire to come to York? So that's what I ended up doing.

[00:21:55]And I'm glad that I did because I've had a great day and packed in a few different vlogs. You know what's coming up next. It's our cruise series. Hey, and just in case you didn't see that announcement video, we are going to be heading on a Norwegian Fields cruise on Piano Iona. It's a week cruise and we are so excited for it. something that we've never done before. It's ticking something off the bucket list as well.

[00:22:19]So, it's going to be great. So, yeah, that series will be starting in a few days time. So, get ready to come with us on another amazing adventure. I know that times move on and we've got to evolve, but how awesome would it have been if everything within the city walls had have been designed to a certain standard in terms of like new buildings like this for example? You know, if it had like restrictions to keep it all kind of in line with the older stuff. It would have been amazing, wouldn't it? if it was like that and then you kind of step out the city walls and to present day.

[00:23:17]Here we are on the corner. Yeah, there's seating up here as well. So, if we walk another few minutes saying four minutes on Google Maps if we walk down here and then we can head down at the gate. In fact, I reckon it's going to be that bit there. We can see this coming out. It's just outside of the city walls. The trusty weather spoons or weather spoon as it as fish it is. Even though we all just say weather spoons or spoons for short.

[00:23:46]Incredible just how it was all built, isn't it? Back in the day.

[00:23:52]Pretty warm now. I didn't put my shorts on today because I thought it was going to be a bit wet, but it's only been a little bit rainy. Other than that, it's been okay. So, yeah, some places you can come down like this. So the place you can carry on walking around.

[00:24:07]Yeah, we're going to head outside of the city walls here now and go and get a nice bit of pub grub.

[00:24:14]Pretty cool how you can drive through there as well. There it is. Weatherspoon the punch bowl. Been here a few times over the years. Oh, lovely. Let's get crossed over.

[00:24:34]Well, that was just what I needed. Good old weather spoons. After a long but awesome day here in York, I have packed in the attractions today. I've not had much kind of downtime to just sit and relax. It's been full on doing things.

[00:24:46]But I've really enjoyed it. It has been action-packed. And yeah, of course, in this vlog started off with the York Dungeon. That was brilliant. All the actors just give yourselves a round of applause. Like it was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed the experience. And we'll definitely be back for more run through the York Dungeon again in the future. Along with that, it was fantastic having a walk around the shambles, seeing York Minster, and just enjoying this beautiful historic city. I love it here in York. Like I said earlier, one of my favorite places to come here in the UK. You usually come for a few days as well and come and see so many different things. But even just a day um coming to action pack loads of things in, I've managed to do it, you know, and I'm really pleased because obviously I started off with the Viking Center this morning. uh Yor Viking Center. That was excellent. Uh so make sure you check out that vlog and the National Railway Museum that I've also done today. Um so yeah, it's been fullon, but I've really enjoyed it and I hope that you've enjoyed all of these different vlogs, too. It's a stunning city and I look forward to coming back many more times in the future. It's also lovely at Christmas as well. Maybe we'll come at Christmas again this year when they have the Christmas market and stuff and all the decorations, especially around the shambles. Uh that would be really nice, wouldn't it? Uh but yes, next series coming up will be an awesome cruise. We're looking forward to going on Piano Iona for the first time. It's going to be a Norwegian Fields cruise and we've got lots of vlogs coming up starting off with our embarcation day.
