This video provides a detailed musical analysis of Olivia Dean's 'Man I Need,' revealing that the song uses a 5-1 chord progression in C# major with first inversion bass movement, features a 6/8 rhythmic feel in the 'Talk to Me' section, and incorporates major 7th chords that create a dreamy, 'cloudy' atmosphere blending 1970s warmth with 1980s synth textures.

Musician's First Time Reacting to Olivia Dean Man I NeedAdded:
Okay, so I had a false start. I started recording, but so I heard about 30 seconds of the song, but it is good. So I'm going to I'm going to do a genuine reaction. Here it is. Olivia Dean, Man I Need. Never heard it before, except for the first >> [music and singing] >> So I heard this.
And I thought it was in 4/4, but then >> [music] >> 3/4 >> [music] [singing] [music] [singing] >> That's good.
>> [singing and music] >> That guitar.
>> [singing] >> So blues. [music] Is it a pre-chorus or a chorus?
>> [music] >> Here's the chorus.
>> [music and singing] [singing] [music] >> And verse.
>> [singing] >> Ooh, I see. So it's a verse.
That is cool. Talk to me. Talk to me.
Okay, so the chorus and the verse are the same chord progression. And side note, the the music video reminds me of that Taylor Swift the newest Taylor Swift song that I did Life of a Showgirl something or other.
Something She's like a mermaid in it.
Anyway, it's like shows the music video being made in the music video. Okay, so the chord progression to the verse and the chorus >> [music] >> We're in F sharp major and we're going 5-1. So, C sharp uh C sharp major F sharp major. Now, if you listen closely, that that C sharp major, the five chord, is in first inversion because you hear the bass go boom boom So, make sure you listen to that when you're listening to the verse. The chorus, it might go That's a common move like a chorus to make it stronger, they'll do like a the roots of each chord. But, in the verse, and I don't know if that's true, we'll check though. In the verse does that half step motion down below.
And then it felt like in the pre-chorus it went to a six chord to a >> [music] >> six chord to the one to the five to the four >> [music] >> You know what? This is live in action right now. I think we're actually in C sharp major.
>> [music] >> It just I don't know, for whatever reason that felt like the five chord to the one. But, I think this is the four chord and we're actually in C sharp major. So, we're going to keep listening with that in mind and then we're going to talk about the melody and all of that stuff.
All right, back in it.
>> [music] >> That's so sick.
>> [music] [singing] [music] >> All right, verse two.
>> [music and singing] [music] [music] >> I think we're in C sharp major, so you know Both of those you could be in either key. Both of those chords are in each other's keys. It's either a 1 4 progression or a 5 1. I was hearing 5 1 for whatever reason. Talk to me. Talk to me.
>> [music] >> Now I'm hearing it as a 1 4, a C sharp to an F sharp.
Uh let's keep listening that melody.
>> [music] >> So baby, let's get >> Oh, what a false start. There's this part.
I don't know what what the actual guitar is, but I'm going to back it up and listen to that. And maybe it's a piano like a synthesizer, but it's the guitar part. To me it's a funk guitar doing the part like right there.
So baby, [music] let's get on the same page.
Stop making me read between [music] the lines. I already [singing] know I can't leave it alone. [music] You're Oh, no. Okay, so now I got to rethink this whole thing cuz that was a six, but if it is a six so then it would be I already [music and singing] know you got to leave it. I already know you got to leave it alone. Yeah.
So I was right in that it's a six. I felt the energy of a six.
Uh if I was someone who had perfect pitch I would have not [music] have thought it was an F sharp or an F minor, right? I would have been like, "Okay, so that's the >> [music] >> that's the B flat minor chord. Or we'll call it the A sharp minor, I suppose, since we're calling it C sharp major. If we called it D flat major, we'd call it B flat minor, right? So since we're calling everything I'm I'm changing it.
It's D flat major. That's got five flats. C sharp major has seven sharps, and that's too many. So we're going to call it something more normal here. D flat None of this matters. I might cut all this out. Maybe I'll leave it in.
Give me read between the lines. [music] I already know I can't leave it alone.
You're I already know you can't leave it alone.
You're on my mind.
>> [singing] >> On You're on my mind.
Leave it alone, you're on Let's back up further. already know. [music] I can leave [singing] it alone.
You're on my mind.
Okay. I already know you can leave it alone.
my mind.
>> [music] >> And then Ooh.
It's like a four chords of major seven there.
So you can hear that >> [music] >> in the chords. I already gave Again. you the time [music and singing] and the place, so don't be shy.
Just come be the man I need. [singing] Tell me That's cool.
>> [music] >> But I'd probably play it And maybe I wouldn't play it like that.
Let's go up here.
Oh yeah, duh.
That voicing is nice.
>> [music] >> That's like a root position. 1 3 5 major seven. So if we're normal chords, it's a 1 3 5 >> [music] >> back to the one. This is 1 3 5 instead of one, we go a half step down to the seven. They clash.
Without the rest of the chord, they clash.
You fill [music] it in.
There it is. So clash.
Not as much.
>> [music] >> Ooh, it's beautiful. Clash.
Beautiful.
Ugly.
>> [music] >> Beautiful.
Onward.
Got something to [music and singing] give. I want that.
I kind of like it when you call [music] me one last time.
Whatever the type of talking is, come on, let's >> [music] >> I got to know you're meant to be >> So the bass is doing the half step thing, just like the verse.
>> [singing and music] [music] >> Okay.
Pause.
Same kind of this. Yeah. That's a little tricky.
Thanks.
Okay, talk to me. I'm going to talk to you about the talk to me thing. That thing is awesome. So it's 1 2 3 First slow it down. That The rhythm is 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6. That's six eighth notes. They call it 6/8. 3/4 kind of the same deal, but it's definitely a 6/8 cuz it's faster. 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 So we're going to slow it down. 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 Talk to me.
Actually, I have to make sure I know it.
In fact, we can slow it down right here so I can talk it through. This rhythm is so sick. The way the words come in are so cool. So we'll go 75% speed.
>> [music] [music] >> So it's uh mm talk to me talk to me. So the talk of the first actually she says it twice. Talk to me talk to me. Talk is on the downbeat and then me is on the downbeat. So for me I would go like talk to me talk to me, right? But it's talk to me to talk to me. Oh, it's so sick. Uh there's not much to really explain there other than it's dope and I like it. So let's keep going.
>> [music] >> Bass action. [music] >> [music] >> Ba ba ba bow. This is one of those songs I would love to play Well, there's more.
Credits.
This is one of the songs I would love to play live cuz the guitar all I would really do is Talk to me. Talk to me.
Talk to me. Talk to me.
So, that's that's This is a dope song.
I've never heard of Olivia Dean before.
I'd never heard the song other than just now when I played it without hitting record. Um but the all all I got was these chords.
>> [music] >> And I heard it in the wrong context. So, if there's more Olivia Dean I should check out, let me know. I want to I want to hear more of this artist. She does these eight the the the actual like the stuff you're hearing like it's an '80s vibe, right? A lot of reverb, a lot of synthesizers.
Um the thing is the drums usually in '80s the drums would be big.
>> [sighs] >> Right? But this >> [music] >> more of a '70s style snare.
That's what I love about the music we're in right now. It's so we have so much to go on as far as similar pop music all the way from like '70s, '80s, '90s.
I would say '50s and '60s. Maybe '60s.
'50s was like What's that song I'm trying to think of?
Right? It's that kind of music and then all of a sudden the '60s hit and it was like Grateful Dead, right?
So, I always think of that. Somewhere between the '50s and '60s music changed and then ever since the '60s and now you've still got your blues rock style stuff like I don't know.
Kind of rambling at this point, but my point being is we can take from anything from the '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000s, 2010s. Wow, there's a lot of lot of decades, a lot of eras you can take from and still have it be useful in a modern context. Um but yeah, I like this 5 It like a '80s '80s synth sound um with cool melodies, really good melodies. There's some major seven chords in there for that cloudy type of feel. I don't know if that's the right word for it, but like a airy floaty kind of feel, right?
>> [music] >> Beautiful.
Love it so much. Thank you all so much for watching. Uh if you're new to the channel, my name is Taylor. I analyze songs that you like and try to figure out what makes them good.
