The key to successfully foot jamming on a BMX bike is committing to lean your shoulder in and exaggerating the hop back into the quarter, as most riders struggle with the fear of not fully committing to the lean, which causes them to fail when trying to get back into the quarter after placing their foot in the tire.

HOW TO FOOTJAM ON A BMX BIKE WITH TYLER FERNENGEL
Added:What up? I'm Tyler from Angle. We're here at the Rixen and Merritt warehouse and today I'm going to teach you how to foot jam.
I'd say the most important part, the hardest part about learning this trick is figuring out how to keep your shoulder leaned in and getting back into the quarter. I think that's what everybody struggles with the most. It's just kind of scary, you know, committing to that. So, we can use the bank. You can get comfortable with putting your foot in the tire and kind of giving little you know, fake hops leaning in just to get the feeling of you falling back into the quarter. So, we can do a few here.
You can see what I mean.
Go up and just You You want to exaggerate that hop in.
That's like the main thing cuz once we get up here, everybody can get into the foot jam, but the big struggle is getting back.
Usually there's coping too, so you got to get over the coping back in. So, you can just go back and forth on a bank and get comfortable with just sticking your foot in the tire and [clears throat] then you make your way over to the quarter. So, we'll try that again.
It's actually harder on that than a quarter.
It's It's I'll just a little hop, just a little lean. This obviously you're already leaned in with the bank, but that's the idea. Just figuring out how to put your foot in, keep your shoulder dropped in and then hop back in. Right now, I'll just show you what happens when you don't hop in. This is a very common thing I see at the skate park when kids are trying to learn this and this is just because you're not committing to leaning your shoulder in.
That's That's pretty much what happens every time. It's the foot off, not fully committed, just sort of [snorts] half-assing it, to be honest.
That's exactly what happens when you don't lean in. So, it's just about finding that balance of being steep enough in the foot jam, but also committing, having your shoulder leaned in, and once you feel yourself falling back in, just give it a little hop, keep your feet on, you know, try and obviously stay as close to the coping as possible to make the hop in as easy as possible, cuz the further you get back, obviously, you're going to have to put a lot more effort into it, and that's when things get a little sketchy, cuz if you don't make it and you're committed, your tire will hit, and then you end up on the flat bottom. Just be almost over-exaggerate the lean in is the main tip I can give, because over all the years of watching kids try and learn this trick, it is just the the lack of committing to falling back in the quarter. And I get it is kind of scary, but that's literally what will separate you from putting your foot down or going back in the quarter. So, give it Go up, put your foot in the tire, get nice and steep in it, keep your shoulder leaned in, give it a little baby hop, and you're back in.
Pretty simple. It really is.
Um like I said, probably don't use a 5-ft quarter for the first one, but if that's all you got, it really is the same thing, no matter what size quarter you ride on. So, yeah, that's pretty much it. Yeah, once you figure out the the traditional just regular foot jam, the cool thing about it is there's tons of combinations.
There's the one in the front tire.
That's probably like the most advanced.
That's called the Vader jam. I mean, other names for it, but I call it a Vader.
And then you have the can jam on the inside, which is one of my favorites.
And then, you know, if you're crazy, you can hop all around and dance on the front. You've got foot jam tail whips, which are super fun, and a bank like this is probably the best thing to learn that on. Definitely doing it on a quarter, even for me, I struggle with it sometimes. And then, um, yeah, foot jam fakie, too. That is one of my favorite tricks of all time.
Thank you guys for watching. I hope you enjoyed it, and be on the lookout for tons of other how-tos coming soon.
