Different sword steels have distinct properties that affect their performance: T10 is a tool steel with tungsten that provides a hard edge but requires precise edge alignment to prevent bending; 65MN is a manganese-enhanced spring steel equivalent to 1566 that resists chipping and cracking; 9260 spring steel can bend up to 90 degrees without setting the bend, making it ideal for beginners learning cutting techniques; and 1095 carbon steel offers good edge retention for cutting applications. The choice of steel depends on the intended use, with harder steels better for edge retention and spring steels better for learning and durability.

No, you're supposed to tell me your rank.
>> Do you know my rank?
>> Do you know my rank?
>> I've had people going to my classes like, "Uh, hello, I'm blah blah." And they tell me their rank. I don't give a [ __ ] about your stupid grand. You give a [ __ ] Just introduce yourself. I'm with this. I'm a grand pooa. All right. Me do this.
>> Yeah. Where are you from?
>> All right. Give me just one second. We get this all greasy.

All right.
I think I got What do we have this evening? This an unboxing. That's what it is.
>> All right. So, Hi, everybody. How are you? This is uh Scott behind the wheel here. And we've got Ryan, Mark, and Michael. Uh some awesome dudes here that are working here at RV Katana that also train. Michael and I just finished a class. And we do something different. We didn't cut last night. It was Memorial Day. We hope everybody had a safe and awesome Memorial Day. It rained here.
So, we had some stuff come in and another another stuff coming today.
We're going to do an unboxing and uh right afterwards, we're going to cut.
So, we're going to cram an unboxing in with some cutting. And uh that's kind of what's going on. So, hi everybody. Hi to our mods. Hope everybody's having a great Tuesday night, no matter where you are. Let's put some swords in the mix, shall we? Let's begin. We're going to do some unboxing. This is some stuff I believe from Phoenix Armory, isn't it, Ryan?
>> Little bit. Little bit of Phoenix Armory and a little bit of what else? Legacy.
>> Legacy.
>> Yeah. [snorts] So Mark can unbox, hand it to Ryan. Ryan can look at it. Michael can rebox. No.
Uh, put everything on the >> ra.
>> Yeah.
>> We have session.
Oh, what is this? Let's see this blade.
Oh, T10.
>> Yep.
>> Oh, very nice. All right. I'm happy we have more more Wakazashi. A lot of people have asked for Wakazashi, so I'm happy that we got How is everybody tonight? So, John is not with us tonight. So, you uh if you're just joining us, you've got Scott, Mark, Ryan, and uh Schmidy Jenkins.
You got Michael US Marine >> staying out of the heat. Yeah, I hear you there, Leroy. Yeah, surprisingly, well, today was humid, but it was really hot here in Richmond, and now it's not.
Okay. Be careful with that. Is that a Gemini?
>> New Gemini.
>> Oh, new Gemini. So, Gemini, as somebody said on a on a John posted a video and somebody said, "That's an abomination."
And I was like, "Yeah, that actually is an abomination." That's what's cool about it.
>> A fruit Gemini.
>> Yeah. So, this is a Yeah. So, the previous Gemini we've had are differentially hardened. This is a three hardened version. Oh my god, it's so light.
>> So, this What is the Gemini? It's a double-edged sword.
>> Yeah, double-edged sword. So you can see from the profile >> just look at the mouth of the side of them.
>> Yeah. So no, >> you're not like used to seeing that, are you? It looks like a catfish. We're being catfished.
>> Literal.
>> Yeah, these are fun. It's kind of like why why not? They're cool.
>> And we hear people like an abomination.
Don't buy it, right? Exercise your freedom to not buy it. We still think it's cool. There's like lots of cool stuff in the sword shop we have that we're like I don't know what the practical reason for this is. But the fact that somebody made it means that it's awesome. You know, it's cool.
>> It doesn't need >> It's a sword. It doesn't Yeah, it doesn't need to have any practical.
Yeah, it's 2026.
>> Here we have a Phoenix themed wakazashi here.
>> That wakazashi that you just pulled out, is that sharp the one at the bottom?
>> Because we do have a special order. Oh, what's this? This is an uno.
>> Oh, was this like the uh Jade um that TV show?
>> This is folded and differentially hardened.
>> Pursuit of Jade or something.
>> I don't know.
>> Is that sharp, Ryan?
>> Got the the Phoenix cap here.
>> So, I think that's my students. Yeah, he just left. So, just leave it on the rack. It's Bobby. Yeah, that's his custom wood.
Do you order a dog wakazi for training?
Where's Gen X David? Who's Gen X David?
I'm Gen X 1970. Let's go.
>> I'm from the late 1900s as somebody just told me. [laughter] >> It just sounds so cringe. Late 1900s.
>> Mark's from the late 1900s.
>> I am. Look at this guy though.
>> Wow. That's a silk wrapachi fittings.
>> Oh. Oh. Is this a masterwork? the new night region.
>> Oh, it should be called blood region.
It's not going to be called night region anymore. I'm going to call blood region.
>> Definitely >> or death region of death.
>> Yeah. So, check out that uh that finish on the steel there. Yeah.
>> Night region. Oh, wow. That's a nice polish.
>> Yeah.
>> Can you guys see that here? Is >> that pretty?
>> All this deep. Is >> that cool? If you're just joining us, we're doing an unboxing before we cut tonight. All of us are going to cut. We got we got a couple boxes and we thought we, you know, let's have some fun on a Tuesday night. What the hell? and a couple of corn dogs. So, new version of the night regent, which I'm pretty much going to call the blood regent.
>> Us on YouTube not getting see the swords. Oh, well, let's fix that. What is this? Oh, this is a nice >> Can you guys hear me on YouTube?
>> Really cool. Damas >> 79 Jed X. Hey, now you're talking.
Let me show this. Let me give YouTube some love here.
>> [snorts] >> Really nice gem. Is this is this Damascus pattern molded?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, yeah. That's beautiful.
>> Gemini.
>> And I am a Gemini. June 12th, 1970.
Let's go.
>> Just putting his birthday right out there on the internet. [laughter] >> [ __ ] I'll tell you about my pet's names and my uh >> my password. Yeah. My first car was social security, right? All the uh capture questions for password guessing.
Another night.
>> Thanks, Tommy. Hope you're doing well.
>> Oh, should this be the earth regent?
>> Uh oh, that's really nice. That brown is nice.
>> Yeah, >> here I'm destroying handle plast.
>> You're doing what you do.
>> Y >> another night regent. This time with a brown silk. It's real silk. Real Japanese silk.
And that beautiful among swag.
Yeah, you don't get to do much unboxing with us, Mark.
>> No, I don't.
>> That's kind of like four o'lock before I get out of work.
>> Yeah, >> Jenna are exquisite. We love them all. I mean, but we're huge fans of them.
>> Another one, >> this one is blue.
>> All right, so these Okay, so we got different a lot of different color options for the regents.
>> Title, >> Royal Regent. Oh, tidal reg title works.
>> The really deep blue with the black. So they all have that same moata tuba, right? Same moatuba.
>> Same moat tuba. Same fittings, same blade.
>> Kachi like uh I'm leave this one in the condom. They all have the same blade on.
>> Yeah, you should leave that in the condom.
>> Don't you threaten me with a good time.
>> What are What are the night regions going for? Do we remember?
>> 400.
>> 450.
>> Still good. Now it sounds like it's a uh it's an auction 495 sold to the mullet in blue.
>> Shut up. Look at this thing.
>> Oh >> yeah.
>> Oh kazati. Oh my gosh.
>> They're improving the fittings [snorts] for the tuba as well.
>> So this is a this is a Japanese sort of tachi. But it's it's from that time period, the Han period where the swords the Japanese were influenced by the Chinese. has started to take their own spin on it. You still see a lot of the Chinese influence in the design of the furniture with a differentially hardened Oh my gosh. Now >> yeah.
>> So it has all rayskin wrapped handle.
You see the the guard here. This whole mechanism is something that's directly Chinese. You see this nice curved differenti hardened blade with a bow.
Wow. That's really pretty.
>> That's really pretty. Check that out.
>> Feels great in the hand.
>> Let's hear Let's hear Let's just hear.
Can you just Let's give it a swing.
>> Oh, that sounds really good.
>> Little chirp there.
>> That's really pretty in that deep red sia.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> I love like the silk kimono material for the sago. That's really nice.
>> All right. That's nice of Tachi. Those you like Tachi. And if you don't, you work here long enough, you'll start loving them. There's swords here that I never really cared much about and now I care lots about.
Hanway Godfred. Yeah, no longer made.
We're hoping, you know, now that uh >> now that Dragon King is making the stuff, they're trying to keep the Hanway brand name alive, but Hanway as a forge is no longer making swords.
>> A [snorts] lot of the European lines.
>> Yeah, Kingston's making the Euro stuff.
Dragon King's making the Japanese. And they've already said they're not going to make the entire line, but we definitely hope that Godfred comes back.
When we were able to get them, we could not keep them in stock. [snorts] >> I remember the first Euro sword I ever cut with was your marks Mark's own Godfred. And I was like, "What?" That was the first European sword I ever cut with. So, yeah, definitely a beautiful sword.
>> Like, look how straight this is.
>> It's still got some curve to it.
>> What is this? Another Gemini.
>> Oh, another 65 MN Gemini. Gemini. I said Gemini.
>> So, 65 MN is a it's a tool steel with spring characteristics. The M MN stands for maganesees. The magnes goes a long way in helping to prevent chipping, breaking, and cracking. Um, it's basically what 1566. It's basically a 1566 type of steel >> with a little more durable edge. But we love 65 mm. In fact, we've uh we've used these for demos where we've just tried to break them and we weren't able to.
>> Sword on sword demos.
>> Hello.
>> You didn't miss much. Uh, John Pedigo.
How you doing, pal? Hope you're all doing well. We're uh we're doing a quick unboxing before we cut tonight. We didn't cut last night. Um Oh, this is pretty.
>> What is this? What is Mark showing us now?
>> It's like another hardened this steel type. Oh, this is an interesting interesting habachi bear.
>> Yeah.
>> What is that? Is it a dragon?
>> Yeah, it's a dragon with interesting lines on it. Check out that dragon.
That's cool.
>> Something new, you know. At least we're not getting all the habachi that look like the leopard, you know, the beehive habachi that was popular like three or four years ago.
Was like the flavor of the month of the week of the year. That's very nice. I love the u the engraved sia. Are you taping all these up?
Don't tape them up because I got to take them all out and take pictures of them tomorrow to put them online.
>> We only got one of these.
>> You just put them back in the box. You don't got to tape them.
>> Just write what they are.
>> What? What is What? But what what >> nice day. Oh, this is cool. See? Oh, this is actually engraved in the blade.
>> Oh, we've had this dowel before. Yeah.
>> A returning classic.
>> It looks like the head from Aliens 3.
[laughter] Aliens 3. Dow.
I think that's bitching. Look at that.
That's cool. I feel like I'm being judged.
>> You what? Bite.
>> That's nice.
>> You like that habachi? It is cool, isn't it? That that one with the dragon on it was different. I've never seen that one before.
>> This is a cool.
>> I love this Han Dynasty gem. This is so awesome. It has a single really deep fer almost like a Viking blade.
>> Yeah, we haven't had it's so light.
>> Yeah.
>> Um look at this. If you guys can see this. I'll show everybody to our friends on Tik Tok and on Facebook and YouTube.
Thanks for joining us and hanging out with this thing. We're doing a quick unboxing before we cut. But look at this. Look at the Damascus that pattern welded steel.
Yeah, this is so pretty. And the ray skin handle. Oh, it's so nice. Yeah, that this one's very popular. Well, whenever we get them, they move quick.
So, very nice. Very nice. So, we got about uh a half a dozen left, maybe eight or nine left, and then we're going to set up and do some cutting. Thanks for hanging out with us.
Jen are fast. Yeah, especially these lightweight ones. I mean, you think they're fast and you hold something that's really light.
>> Another >> Oh, that's is that our custom tuba that we sent? Looks like it.
>> I'm seeing a lot of I haven't seen yet.
Yep. Here's another Gemini. So, I'm gonna leave this one forever.
>> So, more So, we're getting more 65 M Gemini. So, Gemini is just a double-edged sword. We just think it's cool. Um, there is some precedent uh in Japanese history for them, but it's extremely like what? I think even Japanese are like, yeah, whatever. But we think it's cool. So, we had them made and we're just having a lot of fun cutting with them. I think we're gonna cut We're gonna cut with one tonight, right? We're going to cut with one tonight and we'll see if we can cut with a false edge. We'll see how false it is.
>> Cut a double draw. Cut. You just did.
Oh, awesome.
>> Hope everyone's having a good week. We sure are, David. Good to see you, pal.
We do we do ship to Europe, but not everywhere in Europe.
>> So, we don't ship to the UK. We don't ship to Italy. There are certain states we used countries we used to ship to that we simply cannot anymore. The laws have changing. So Google real quick your country and know if you can your country will allow sword imports. Some countries now move to um allowing them with special paperwork, special licenses. So your country may have done that. So please know that before you order something because they can, will and should be confiscated from some of these countries and now you're boned.
>> Oh, that's Oh, let me see the face on that. What? We had this one before.
>> Similar.
>> I don't think we've had >> I don't have this.
>> If I was 16, I'd have one for each day of the week. You kidding me? That's freaking awesome. Look at that. It's all carved in the blade.
This is super cool.
Chinese Dow.
That's awesome. Yeah.
All right. Four more katana or long swords and three shorties.
We're going to start doing some cutting.
You gonna come with us tonight, Mike?
>> All right.
>> Does the pope [ __ ] in the woods? All right.
>> Only on oddnumbered Sundays when the moon is full.
Is that what a Chinese emperor would give to a Viking? No. But that sounds like a video idea. We got to get Qua. We gota get Qua in here to like uh have somebody else dress up like a Viking or something and have him like gift.
>> That'd be awesome.
>> This is a new Reaper.
>> Oh. Oh. So, we got some Legacy Blades in here. Oh, a new Oh, we haven't had a new Reaper in a long time.
>> So, if you don't know, the Reaper is one of our most It's one of It's all our favorite cutting swords. A lot of our customers have asked us what last year two years ago, somebody asked on our Facebook page, they asked Mark, John, and I what's our favorite cutting sword?
And we all answered differently. We all said the Reaper. It's a 1095 carbon steel blade with a uh a ham on it.
>> It has a sort of a wicked story and wicked curvature, but not too much where it makes nukichi and noto nukit noto difficult. Um and uh we all own one. We love it.
>> These new ones also have gold.
>> Yeah. So, let me show Yeah. So, this is a new version, a brown one. So, Oh my god. I swear to God feels lighter.
>> So this has so Okisaki this next gen we brought in have a very large tip called Okisaki. And you can see it has an early terminating bohe and it's made from differentially hardened 1095 carbon steel. But let's hear this thing. This is why we love these these things. Even with that early terminating >> bow, >> man. It just sounds so good. Yeah. Uh, really tight handles, smooth transition, simple iron furniture. We love these.
So, now we have a a brown version which we I don't know. We're going to call it >> death stool. I don't know. What?
>> Upper decker.
>> The upper decker. The upper decker.
[laughter] >> Give us What are you You got some ideas for that for a Brown Reaper? What would you guys think would be a good name for that?
>> Get out of here. Come on, man. There's kids here. Maybe [laughter] >> better.
It does sound like a sports team. The Reapers.
>> Yeah.
>> Um, yeah. Any ideas what you think we should call that? We're open to it.
>> Yeah.
>> Was this another customer body?
>> Oh, so I think we probably ordered one because he bought he bought the one.
>> Oh, this is Sharp.
>> Yeah. So, this is Yeah, that's what he bought and we dled it for him. Now he trains with it every day.
>> Browneyed girl. Browneyed girl.
>> Also got >> Yeah, this is really pretty. This feels like one of our duelists.
>> Some really nice furniture. What is >> this is either I got like really strong.
This is Is this really light to you?
>> Yeah.
>> Let me hear this.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Wow. That sounds good.
>> You got any old in the 100 105 cm range?
We do. having trouble sort of seeing one that is not short or 120 centimeters.
>> We have a lot that are 120.
>> Yeah, we have a lot that's 120. We also have the um the 34 inchers the 35 inch blade >> 35 39 we go to 40 something. Um look up on our website legacy legacy odachi or legacy noachi and you'll see them.
>> Chinese sometime all the brass the stingray skin here.
>> Will you be getting more katanas like the Duncan Mloud and Highlander? Yes.
Yes, we have the Ram Mirez, but we'll have the Duncan Mloud coming. So, for sure, now that we know people want it, a real version of it without a plastic handle.
>> We have an eight-sided Damascus.
>> So pretty. Yeah. Wow. Look at that.
>> Oh my gosh. The temper is so beautiful on this >> freaking metal scabbard.
>> Is it two weapons in one? You get him with this. I'll get him with that. Let me see that.
dual wield, >> discipline, >> right? Your discipline stick.
>> Yeah.
>> Wow. That's really pretty, man. This is This weighs like two times more than the sword.
>> Yeah.
>> So cool. More jet in here and some Itachi and some Gemini, which are double-bladed swords, which if you stick around, we're gonna do some cutting of tatami tonight. We're going to cut some with the Gemini, which is our >> some kind of hondachi.
>> Some kind of hondachi.
Oh, it's a sword.
They made the bigger.
>> So, yeah, we'll show the master work that we got in. Uh, well, it's the it's the region. It's the night region. It's a version of the night regent. Um, we'll show that. Uh, where's the red one at, Mike? Do you know? Do you see the red knight regent there?
>> Look at the size of this.
>> Oh, this is the ultra premium version of the Atsu sword from Goss.
>> It's a long O, not Yate, right? Y. Oh, so Michael's got this one.
So this is the new Show the handle up.
Yeah. Show the whole thing.
Why don't you put the sword in your back pocket? Yeah. Bring it up closer.
>> Closer. Closer.
>> My breath that bad. Probably teaching class. This is the red the red one. Somebody want to see that.
Yeah. Thanks, Mike.
Thanks, buddy. So, let's see this thing, Mark. So, this is a new premium version of Atsu's sword from Gossay, the sequel to Gossushima.
>> Sushima.
>> Um, the wolf sword that her father made.
That freaking Oh my gosh, that sounds good.
>> That suba is like from a >> It's huge.
>> 87 Chevel.
>> Freaking like a Craigar. It's a Craig Rar 17. Look at that thing. Is huge. Let me see. Hold your hand up against it.
Yeah. Yeah.
>> No, hold it like like you're wielding it.
>> Or no, hold your hold it in your hand and point.
>> Yeah, that'll protect your hand. Here, click get closer. Just don't stab me.
>> Put the blade in.
>> Look at that thing. It's freaking huge.
Oh, it has really nice gold inlay and the in the wolf's Oh, that's awesome.
Very nice.
>> So, this is like the third or fourth version of Atu Sword. We've had like four or five different versions, >> but we've had some people ask us for just like a really nice, really, really game-p to unbox and then we're going to do some cutting. So, thanks for your patience and after cutting, we'll go around the shop. So, if something you would like to see, um, we're happy. We'll do that.
>> Okay. So, here we have a on this puzzle here. Lowest walking stick swords you have I think what 175 for the 65 MN uh or is it 2005 >> I think 175 for 65 mm chto uh and then they go up from there.
Yeah, I do I agree with you uh Max Martinez. I do like this one better than the last go one. Well, I like them all, but this one has a lot more going on.
Yeah.
>> Oh, what's this?
>> Oh.
>> Oh, is this saying Oh, he thought it was wildfire.
>> Yeah. Oh, yeah. We've had the suba.
We've had this. Oh, yeah. I love this small tuba, though. Yeah.
>> Sublet.
>> The sublet. Yeah. This is a new So, a new uh tanto or another one back. Let me see the uh scabbard on that. Mark got a really nice um carved out scattered that pretty. Yeah, love it. Cool deal.
Cool mod deal.
>> Our last sword of the night here in Christmas colors.
>> Oh, what is that? Red and Okay.
>> You got the the cloth under layment instead of >> Oh, yeah. It's like looks like snakes skin.
>> No, it's probably cotton.
>> It's probably brocade. It's brocade.
It's like so brocade. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> I don't know if it's actual silk. Oh, man. Look at the the body on this.
>> Oh, that's pretty. Yeah.
>> What is it?
>> Brass.
>> What is the What's it the depiction of it?
>> Looks like we have a tiger.
>> Somebody dying by by a tiger by the by the river.
>> Tiger on the blade side here.
>> Got a tiger.
>> Oh, I think it's them on both sides.
>> Yeah. Tiger and looks like some >> Let me see this or something.
>> See a tiger. I see a tiger. Oh, there it is. Oh, it looks like a Tasmanian devil.
>> Oh, that's pretty cool.
>> Yeah, it's a tiger. Oh, that's cool.
>> Oh, that's a interesting habachi. I haven't seen this habachi before. Look at that. You guys see that?
That's cool.
Show this. There we go.
>> Dinosaur. All right, [laughter] that's that's going around. It's like hitting my Facebook feed every day. All right, so that was an unboxing we just did. And now we're going to put that stuff away. Put that stuff uh on the floor underneath it. Yeah, >> let's let's let's kill this table, Mark, if you wouldn't mind. And let's uh pull out the stand and the uh peg.
You might want to move that that rack right there, the Euro rack.
All right, we're setting up now to do some cutting, everybody. So, just hang tight. We're all set. So, some new swords in some new versions of the Night Regent now in different colors. We've got brown, blue, red, um some more 65N version uh versions of the Gemini, which is our double-edged katana, which we think is abominatingly cool. Um that's some other cool stuff.
>> Yeah.
>> As it should be, right? Move over here.
>> Come to the corner of death.
All right, we're going to set up for some cutting.
We're cut. We're cut with a bunch of stuff tonight. We're going to cut with the Gemini. We'll see how uh if Mark Mark Muscle Muscle Man Popey Arms can uh cut with the uh the spine.
It's spineless like you.
All right, if you're just joining us, howdy. Welcome to our feed.
Uh we're gonna do some cutting tonight.
John's not with us unfortunately or fortunately depending. Uh and you've got Michael, Mark, Ryan, and yo, New Jersey at the wheel. Let's go. Hide your grits. Hide your grits.
You eat grits, Mark?
>> Yeah. We don't eat kitty litter where I'm from.
>> Doesn't sound Jersey enough to be Scott.
You call me Scotty Trevy. [laughter] had with butter.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Even sawdust tastes good enough. Enough sugar and butter in it.
[laughter] >> I, you know, since, you know, I'm from New Jersey, but since I came here, I'm now addicted to biscuits. So, you know, we don't eat biscuits in New Jersey. You kidding me? But now I love them. So, >> yeah, I love bagels. What are you talking about?
You like the Knicks? Go Sixers. Get out of here. We had a pretty good run.
>> I'm more of a hockey freak and I'm happy that my Flyers sent the Pittsburgh Penguins home.
Whole new young team, but yeah.
Damn.
>> Try to suck less, dude. Come on, man.
>> Boo. Flyers. Steve doesn't like the Flyers because he's from Florida. You don't deserve hockey in Florida. You don't walk out of Disney World in shorts with Crocs on and go, "Hey, y'all want to see a hockey game?" You'd have to endure a harsh winter where halfway to the stadium you had to stop and put tire chains on the back wheels just to make it there. And you get there and you're 10 minutes late, you're already pissed off and you got a cold cheese steak in your hand and >> Yeah, I know. It sucks, too. I know.
Yeah. Actually, the Florida Panthers are pretty good, too. Played for the Panthers. I'm just giving it crap, Steve.
>> I mean, even Las Vegas has a hockey team. I mean, I mean, All right, we're going to do some cutting here in a few minutes.
>> Lightning fans are the worst on the planet. You think? I don't know. They say Bruins fans are or wherever that rat think uh Brad Morian's playing. Those are the worst fans.
>> Penguins.
>> Skotoichi. Oh, you call me by my nickname. Uh tonight we're going to cut with uh let's see. We'll grab some swords and show you. So, we're waiting on Mike here. just the throaties in a box and I'll have these young gentlemen grab a sword and we're going to cut with five different swords tonight.
>> So, uh, thanks for your patience as we get this going.
>> You don't do grits or bacon like bagels?
What's that?
>> No, no, that's just there. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
>> Actually, I eat a lot of English muffins and it's kind of they don't do that here much. So, it's good thing there's Duncan's here.
Okay, you guys grab a sword and show it off. AWS.
All right, what Mark? What's Mark have here? So, we're going to cut with Now, we have Michael. Now, Michael, this is like what his third or fourth time cutting. So, we're letting Michael experience the fun that is cutting here at RV Katana with all kinds of cool stuff that you never thought you'd cut with.
>> No points for guessing this one in the chat. Y'all seen it. Y'all love it.
Their bats.
>> Yeah, the Hitoki Batsai from Arani Kenshin. This is the sword he used before he came the became the uh >> the hero uh hippie reversebladed dude.
So Mike's gonna get a chance to cut with this with a very interesting uh scuff.
And we have here Mike >> actually don't know.
>> This is the fletching from dragon king.
>> Yeah, I don't know anybody would call it felching. That's not appropriate. So this is the dragon king fletching. A very popular sword. I have one student that's like six foot seven and so they have a this is a 12inch handle. So they so all the dragon kings they come with a longer handle. So those you that like actually prefer or if you're a rua prefers like a longer handle these are great for that.
And then we're going to uh guys grab another sword you're going to cut with.
What else we cut with tonight? Ryan here has Oh Ryan has his Moritaka Vortex Wakazashi. We don't get a chance to cut with these often so Ryan brought his in.
And the Moritaka Vortex is a 9260 spring steel sword. It'll bend up to 90 degrees and not set the bend. We love them. Um, if you're on a budget, these are what $200 a set with the katana 400.
>> Uh, >> yeah, he just swapped the tuba on it.
So, that's what's kind of cool about these. You can break them down and replace the furniture if you so desire.
>> And then, uh, which other one are we gonna cut with? I don't know.
>> Did you grab a Gemini?
>> Which one is the Gemini?
Mike, you didn't put the Gemini in the box, did you?
[laughter] >> Why would you have done that?
>> The sword off the rack with the >> Okay, then you you just Oh, that's it right there, Mark.
>> Yeah, this is one of our Gemini.
>> Yeah, we're gonna cut this one. All right.
This is a Gemini.
Gemini tooga tooga. What is that?
>> I think he means toaga.
>> Toronaga. Oh, Toronaga from Shoga.
>> All right. So, let's pick a sword. We'll start with Let's Let's leave the uh let's want to do the Gemini first. We want to warm up a little bit first.
>> I mean, I think >> All right. Let's go. What do you think?
>> Let's do one.
Let's get Michael Let's get Mike warmed up. All right, Mike, you get to start with the Hitokiti Batsai from Roni Kenchin. We have like four versions.
This is the Is this the 65 MN version, Mark?
>> Oh, this is the T10 differenti hardened T10. Mike, you want to show the sword real quick? Show the sword. So, this is the kitty batsai.
>> Yeah, this one uh I was real hesitant when I cut with it because I haven't cut anything with the curvature. Yeah, I was wondering if it's going to give me any trouble indexing. So yeah, keep a tight grip, good tennoi, and see what you can come up with. And do not cut it in half.
Cut it to rubber bands or above them.
Just relax and have fun. Don't the internet says >> Okay. Is the ear missing?
Okay. All right. Good job. Very nice.
>> It's kind of like effortless, right?
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That curvature is kind of wicked.
You like the T10? Yeah, we're big fans of T10. T10 is a tool steel. On paper, it's a little better than 1095, but uh well, most humans notice the difference.
I say the nay. Um so, it's, you know, it has a little more um tungsten is what the T stands for. It's actually T8. Uh and u >> Yeah, T10 sounds better off the tongue.
It's like the Mustang 5.0's, right? None of them were 5.0's. They were 4.8s.
Remember them?
>> No. What was that dork rapper that used to drive in one? A white one. Uh Den Vanilla Ice.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right.
>> Oh, I'll come. You kidding me?
>> I'm the captain now. Oh, I haven't >> Let's try some. Let's turn around and do uh just a little off the top, mate.
Ice. Ice, baby. That's it. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Tommy vanilla ice. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. He invented rap, didn't he?
>> Oh my god, Mark. Come on, man. Look at that scoop, Mark. Look at that scoop.
>> Yeah, John's not here, but he who he who cutth big rolleth or GT Yeah. rubber bandeth or GTFO.
driving in the 5.0. Yeah. And it was a 4.8. But that to give an example like T10 is kind of like that. It's actually T8 tool steel. So it's a tool steel which means it has a really hard edge.
But the the the exchange is if your edge alignment is off, which is called huji huji, you run the risk of bending, chipping, or even breaking um breaking.
I'll grab >> What are people saying?
Wonder why Marcus is so good with just one hand. You know, Steve, >> what's that?
>> You're my number one.
>> Wonder Mark is so good with one hand.
Yeah, I know. You know, you know, you notice he's right-handed and he's not cutting with his left hand.
>> Yeah, imagine that.
>> Channel the power of Vanilla Ice. Yeah.
[laughter] >> Oh, awesome. You got a collection of swords. Oh, sweet. We love them, man. We meet so many cool people. Oh, whoa.
>> Whoa. Is that STILL ON THERE?
>> WHOA. THAT WAS A GOOD CUT, MAN. Cuz you just cut a chunk. You cut up a chunk of a chunk. Wow. Well done. That's a fun sword, isn't it? Now, you guys go ahead.
Mike, go ahead.
>> Let's get 10 cuts out of this beast.
>> What? Bro, you're supposed to cut Hidati.
>> Oh, >> yeah. That's why the mat was turned the other way.
>> You see, I think you did it on purpose.
You get two cuts. So, we're learning something about Mike. You >> weasel.
>> Yeah, I know. [laughter] >> Let's uh let's unpeg it.
>> No.
>> Well, don't cut the peg because I only have the one.
Stop. Stop.
>> Let him get out of the way first, please. Safety force.
>> Yeah.
>> Nope. Okay. Next.
>> Yeah. What was that? I don't know either.
Gave it good shape for sure. Oh, nice little swi right.
>> It's all about that base, isn't it? All right, so that was the Kitokiri Batosai from Phoenix Armory. One of the different versions we have. That's the differenti hardened T10 version. We love it. It's T10. Um, very interesting blade profile with that really wicked curved Tachi like scuff.
It's wicked shop. That's right.
>> Yeah. Mike. Mike and Nat. Man, Nat's getting better at cutting, too. Seven was a real jerk.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Saying some really nasty things about Natalie. Uh, was it was it on Facebook or YouTube?
>> YouTube. Man, there are people out there that don't eat enough. They don't eat enough baseball bats. You know what I'm saying?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. That guy was a real jag off.
What's next?
>> You know, we all had to learn somewhere.
And you know, for a lot of people, we even have people that cut a lot. And yeah, everybody's good with their one sword that's always sharp that they cut with and know. But to just take a sword off a rack that you've never held before and cut with it a varying degrees of sharpness. We don't sharpen these.
>> And when you don't, >> we just took this off the rack. Still has the plastic on it. We literally just took this off the rack. So, uh hopefully it'll cut well, but you know, sometimes, you know, the the the cut gods aren't with you. Especially as you're learning, it's just difficult. So, >> it's always easy to be negative. It's sometimes hard to be supportive, right?
>> Or just shut up and not say anything.
>> Oh my god, I love your shirt. Just real life. [laughter] >> Oh my god, it's both.
>> Oh, it's so good. What awesome. So, this is the What is this, Mark?
>> Dragon King Fletching.
>> This is the Dragon King Fletching Fletching. That's the name.
>> Forged from 1566 spring steel, so flexible and nice.
>> I think they differentially hardened it.
>> Yeah, it does. It does have a humbleness. They did differentially harden it. Um unique fittings. They're based in Dallion and not uh uh the other place >> long.
>> Long chin. So uh yeah. So they're based down. So they make their own furniture which is kind of unique.
>> All right. So we're gonna cut now with the Dragon King Fletching. Good evening, Jimmy. How you doing, pal? If you're just joining us, this is uh we normally cut on Monday nights, but with the holiday yesterday, we decided to cut tonight. We did a little bit of an unboxing. So, thanks for joining us. And of course, those you supporting us that have bought something from us or haven't bought anything, but just watch our content. We appreciate you. Thanks so much for hanging out with us. Get a little closer, too, buddy. Cut with that mono.
Yeah. So, it's a little steep, but you know, don't let Toyama people tell you there's only one one angle, right?
There's many different angles. You want to try to start off with a nice 45 left to right. Yeah. Yeah. That's good, though. You went all the way through it.
Very good.
It's like he's getting better, right?
That was a really good cut. Yeah. See that angle?
>> Yeah. Really good. Really good.
>> Wukong staff is something we're looking into. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Which one?
>> The Wukong staff from the from that um >> Wukong Monkey King video game.
>> Blackth Wong.
>> Blackmth Wukong. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Yeah. What I call it? Monkey King. You know what I mean? It's [laughter] not what I said, it's what I meant.
>> Is your name?
>> Yeah, Jimmy. The fletching just the fletching just goes right. It's Draggy King. You know, they do a really good job. This is right out of the box. Um, this is not us putting any mystery edge on it. This is what they just took it right off the rack and said, "Let's cut with this tonight." Just goes to show you, you know, right out of the box, these things consistently 10 out of 10 times. Now, this one sells for what, 450, I think. So, um, >> yeah, I think it's I think the fletching's 450. Oh, there it is. What a great cut. How's that feel?
>> Okay.
>> Yeah. Very good. That's a good angle, Mike. See, in real time, you're getting better. See, that's the thing. You just have to be get out there and cut, right?
>> Repetition is the mother of all skill, right? You're not going to get any worse than you are now.
>> Right. The more you do it, the better you get.
>> So, now you see we're going left to right, Mike. Yeah. Don't mess it up.
[laughter] Yeah, that's that's that's what I thought.
>> So, we're cutting with the Dragon King swords. The Dragon King, they're uh pretty amazing uh forge. They've been around for uh >> what about 40 years now. U they and Veny Jen is the actual guy that taught he actually worked for Han and taught the Hanway Smiths how to forge blades. And what's interesting is Hanway closed.
They're trying to keep the brand alive.
Um, and now Dragon King's making the Haneway swords, but they said they're gonna make some small changes. So, >> man, how low can you go?
>> That's pretty low, dude.
>> You're already 5 foot two.
>> It's not polite to mean mouth strangers.
What's that mean? Does somebody mean mouth a stranger?
Huggy Bear. Wow. What? I missed. What's going on?
>> Be nice.
>> All right.
>> Weatens. Don't be a dick.
>> Who? Will Weaten.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. [ __ ] Will Weaten. I'll be a dick to you just for saying that. [laughter] >> Will.
>> All right. Well done. All right. We ready for the uh the Gemini?
>> Let's do it.
>> Let's do it. So, we're going to cut now with the Gemini, which is a dual-edged uh quote abomination, which the bottom one. Bottom one. Yeah.
Yeah. Want to show it off first. This is the This is one of them. We've got some new ones in today. This one's what? T10, right?
>> Uh yeah, >> this one's a differenti hard T10. We got some 65 men versions today, which will be a little less, but everybody's been asking for a double-edged sword, and we said, "Okay, let's do it." And we did it. Now, I wouldn't I'd be very careful on your Noto for this. Yeah. So the Yagu shank you guys that hold it like right up and drop it. They'll probably feel right at home with a sword like this.
>> Or if you're really good at you're really good at your no touch.
>> Watch blood sport this morning bottom one.
>> Yeah.
Oh, let's hear this. Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa. Come closer. Come closer. Let me hear. Okay, so this is the normal touching. This does not have a bohy on it. This is a double edge. So that's your standard edge. I'm just going to flip it over.
just like >> right.
>> Why? Because we can.
>> Well, that sounds wild. That's wicked.
>> All right. So, now we're going to cut with the uh So, we'll do a normal cut and a second cut we'll cut with the spine.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, he's going to go right out of the gate. He's going to cut with the spine.
So, let's uh let's show it. Yeah. You see here, he's cutting with the spine of the sword.
>> Oh my [laughter] gosh.
>> Nothing. Like butter.
>> Really?
>> Yeah.
>> Didn't feel any Are you guys gonna try it? You gonna try it? Man, I want to try it.
>> Oh, you know what? Yeah, it's because you probably do a lot of EMA stuff.
That's why.
>> Which side was that?
>> The normal biped side.
>> Oh, yeah. I know what you mean. People ain't talking trash. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I got you. That's a reference. Yeah.
You're so right. Right. People are jerks.
>> Yeah.
>> All right, Ryan. What side are you gonna do?
>> Spine. Okay. So, so do it.
>> Okay. I got to do this. This is something I've never done. I've always wanted to do something with this feel. So, Oh my gosh, that is >> Yep. This is double edge.
>> That is wild.
>> All right, I'm gonna embarrass myself because I haven't done one of these in a very long time.
>> Oh, okay. Mark embarrassment hour. What are you gonna do?
your arms off. Flesh wind had worse.
That is wild. That's the Gemini for you.
Yeah, that's wild.
>> That's the name of the game. Snake Ryan.
Yeah, >> the Gemini. Yeah, the Gemini is a double-edged sword. Again, again, traditional. No. Why' we do it? It's America. We can. We think it's cool. You don't have to think it's cool. It's all right. Not everything's for you, but we think it's pretty wicked. We think it's just one of those cool things. But a lot of people agree with us because they bought them and cut with them and they were like, "This is fun." But it's a double-edged sword. Um, a katana in katana format.
>> All right.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Ryan. Yeah. Ryan cursed the swords.
Everybody take a shot. What would you take a shot of, Mike? Maple syrup. All right.
>> 21. [laughter] >> Oh, you're 21 now. That's right. I forgot.
>> You're a It's not you. What is it?
What's it? Capri Sun.
>> Capri >> or Sunny D.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Have some lovely partying gifts for you.
Can't make fun of that. Yeah. It's first time you ever cut with it, right? It's pretty wild.
>> He's trying to cut the back edge.
>> Yeah. That's pretty hard.
So, are you have to put a little oomph in? Looks like you're put a little bit of oomph into it because of the back edge.
>> I mean, now that we're getting to the like kind of >> Yeah, it's getting a little harder >> down.
You see a lot of band-aids in the future. It's a Gemini [laughter] probably.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Oh, nice cut.
Nice. All right, let's save that. You want to save that base?
>> Sure.
>> Or you Okay. All right.
>> All right.
So, that's the Gemini from Phoenix Armory, a double-edged sword. We got more in today. So, they're available on our website. Uh and uh we got some more in today that I'll get get up on the website next day or two that are made from 65N. They'll be a little less um than the T10 versions and they feel lighter. So um but we we really love 65 mmN which is a tool steel. It's a spring steel basically equivalent to 1566 with maganese which which uh helps to aid in resisting cracking and chipping.
A lot of the Chinese swords are made out of 65 mm and then they started making swords European swords and Japanese swords and lo and behold it's pretty amazing. All right, time. We have two mats left after this one. I think we we skipped our test map in >> Oh, yeah. So, we can cut some more tonight. Yeah. So, we're going to cut now with um well, a series of swords uh called the Vortex. So, the Vortex is is a a series that we designed which for people on a budget that actually want to get into cutting and they don't know where to start and they don't want to spend, you know, everything's expensive.
Taco Bell's 20 bucks. So, uh, this we we have these in different colors with different sword guards. Um, they're called the Vortex series. We have had them available in katana and wakazashi formats. This is one that belongs to Ryan. I think all of us own a vortex.
They're just so much fun. They're all made from 9260 spring steel, which is the upper echelon is spring steel. Until you get to the exotic stuff, it'll bend up to 90 degrees and not set the bend.
This version, it has no heat. It does have no bohe. I believe all the models we have in stock are bohe. Most people have asked for bohe. Uh if you're a sword arch practitioner and you just want a wakazashi in your waist uh that you're not going to draw but you want in your waist for practicing your nukichi and noto or nukitske, these are great.
200 bucks, tight wraps, simple furniture, money different colors. You can swap out the tuba as you see Ryan has done. Uh but these are just fun swords. Good budget cutters if you're new, but they don't look like a, you know, a wall hanging budget thing. Is that tuba a little smaller? Is that why it's making some rattle?
>> Let me see this. Can you Can I see this real quick? So, this is um You guys hear this? You hear that little rattle? All my teachers in teachers in Japan since been going to Japan, 1987, their swords all rattle. They make a little bit of noise. So, this is not a lot of play. The tuba is a little thinner than the one I think that came with it. This isn't even enough to put another sepa in there, but maybe some dental floss. You can put some dental floss in there behind it in between the Fucci and the tuba. The sepa and it'll take that out. But this is no problem.
For whatever reason, people think if your sword makes noise, it shouldn't be, right? I like the rattle, too. But all of my teachers, their swords rattle. Um, >> like it, but I understand.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's a personal preference, but it's um Yeah. I'm not about to tell my teachers in Japan to fix their [ __ ] You know what I'm saying?
Oh my god. Are you kidding me? That just like looks like you just dropped it.
Yeah, the taco $20 Taco Bell is hard.
Those stupid Lux box meals are like $22.
>> To be fair though, Taco Bell is the only place you can go to get gas.
[laughter] >> Well played. Oh, very nice. Good angle, too. [laughter] That's awesome. So true.
>> Oh, very nice.
>> Is this your first time cutting with the wakazashi?
>> Yeah.
>> Cutting with one hand. Ah, you did better than I did. Well done.
>> Oh, are you kidding me? [ __ ] you.
That's Oh my god. This is your own.
>> Did you do anything to it? Did you just swap the suba out?
>> Oh my god. What an awesome sword for not much money. $200. Yeah, we love these.
So, if you're looking for just a budget wakazashi just to have some fun with or to pair up with a a katana to make a daiso, these are great. $200. We love them.
>> Yeah. You take a sip of your Capri, son.
>> Yeah, leather's Yeah, leather is another way. Okay, that's a good good Yeah, good point. Yeah, leather is also another thing people will put in between sepa because you can get leather in different varying uh thicknesses which also works too. I've actually seen that quite a lot where you know a full sea might be too much and you might have difficulty finding sepa that are actually wide enough to take out the rattle. So leather is great. Yeah, very good suggestion there.
>> All right, >> we ever cut with the long swords in shop? We actually do, Rex. We do cut with the long swords quite regularly.
Maybe. You know what? Maybe next Monday we should make it Euro night.
>> Just cut with all euros. And the Monday after that we'll do all Chinese swords.
>> Oh, [clears throat] yes. We You know what? Next Monday, we'll cut our Ballistics gel gummy bear with a >> euros.
>> Yes. All right. Good point. Next Monday, we're going to cut Don't cut the spike in there, Mike.
>> Yeah.
>> Where is it? Like right here.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Cut above the rubber band and you're fine.
>> Oh, there you go.
>> I think I think we got it all.
>> I think we got it all. She's dead. Jim [laughter] >> gummies next Monday. You're ready. Yes, Steve. [laughter] >> Yeah, our good friend uh Ray Gimmo uh >> uh He uh he brought us some ballistics gel and brought us another ballistic gel that's shaped like a gummy bear that we're going to cut.
>> So, we'll cut some euros next week.
>> So, this is why Mike didn't get all the way through. He found the spike.
>> Did he Did he dam damage it at all?
>> That's the thing with 9260. You can really punish. I mean, 9260 can take some beatings.
>> I mean, I've cut through some of those.
>> Now, there are people that, you know, they have a budget. they can afford anything they want really and they love 1060 or you know uh 5160 or 1566 or or uh or 9260. There people just love the flexibility, the edge retention, the value. It's just this you get a lot for your money. All right, so now we have um is this a Vortex? Oh, now we're going to cover the Vortex Katana. Here we go. So this is the uh what's this one called?
>> Is it crimson blossom? It's a crimson crimson sakodor or crimson blossom. So this is the katana version and you can see it has a bohe and it doesn't have a temper line on it.
It's through hardened. Um and why don't you bend it against the floor? Why don't you uh show us the bend? So Ryan will show show us here what's what's so cool about this. When you say it'll bend up to 90 degrees, what are you talking about? That's what we're talking about right there. You see that? Now point it.
And why this is so important when you're learning cutting, your angles are going to be off. You weren't good at anything when you first started, were you? So, you know, when you cut, you're going to have some bad angles. And with T10 or carbon steel, you run the risk of bending, chipping, or breaking them. In this economy, not everybody can afford to replace their blade every time they have a bad cut. So, spring steels are a great way for you to kind of learn cutting, develop some good skills, develop some confidence. Nobody owns one sword, right? But maybe your first sword, you'll remember it's the one that you developed your skills on. And that's why we love these vortexes. And that's why we love spring steel. It really is good for somebody, you know, backyard cutters or even if you're practicing in a ku or a gendo like Io or Toyamaru, you actually want something you can cut with, but you gota, you know, you can't put a $600 credit on your card without your wife slapping you around or significant other.
Come on, man.
>> See, >> that's a John cut right there.
>> That's for you, John. [laughter] >> So, now we're cutting with a Moritaka Vortex katana with a bow.
We just cut with Ryan's. Oh, wow.
So, the AI made it look like it was fixed. [laughter] You think Howard Clark's bay knight L6 bay knight is a very bay knight L6 is really brittle but that that upper bay knight is pretty amazing. I mean Howard Clark is kind of a yeah Howard Clark's kind of a there aren't a lot of there aren't a whole lot of real famous American smiths. Walter Sorls Howard Clark. I mean there there's some out there but you know he's in a league of his own especially with what 1075. That guy can take 1075 carbon steel and make it better than everyone else's. That guy's just amazing. Uh he's getting up there too. I don't know how long he'll be around, but you can't even get a L6 Howard Clark Bayight sword for under $67,000 used. Um, you're looking at probably 10 grand for something new from him complete. So, um, yeah, I mean, it's all over the place, right? Everybody has their opinion, you know, and you're certainly welcome to it. We think it's amazing. Um, I had a chance I got a friend that owns two of them and he was going to sell me one and then didn't sold to someone else. So, I had a chance to buy one, but uh I've had never cut with one though.
So, if you have one, want to come through Richmond on a Monday night, let us know. [laughter] We'll do some cutting.
>> Yeah, ESP is pretty amazing, isn't it?
All right, Mike. Here we go.
Take your time. Relax.
Take it over your ear.
You're not cutting at the extension.
You're leading with your hands. Do one more cut, but cut at the extension. The time the point you make that cut, your arm should be extended.
It's all right.
All right. Your angle your angle is too acute. You need to have a wider angle.
bring it over your ear. Now I realize you got really small ears, so that might be it.
>> You know what, Mike?
[laughter] >> But also remember, >> yeah, Leroy, the pursuit of Jade, we have one. It's in the works and as soon as we get pick, I will share them on our Discord and uh we'll share them on our website as well.
Yeah, and I think you're right there, Huggy Bear. I mean, heat, proper heat treat is everything. Those of you guys who know anything about swords or knives or watch um any of the popular TV shows like Forge and Fire, you'll know it all comes down to heat treat. You know, any [ __ ] can take a slab of steel and put a pretty handle on it say katana. But to make it, you know, light enough, strong enough, less is more. Um, a wieldable weapon that doesn't crack or break easily, that takes a lot of skills.
There's a lot of math in there.
Your angles, too. You need to come more of a 45. Yeah. No, you're coming to here. Come over 45 here.
All right. This is practice, man. It's not easy. First time you've ever cut with one of those.
>> There you go.
>> First time.
>> Yeah. This is a used tatami mat. So, this is a mugandachi. So, this is significantly more dense than the mugandachi you've been cutting with earlier.
So, if you have your drink nearby, get ready to pour a shot. [laughter] >> Ever clear? What are you talking about?
Get out of here.
>> Straight alcohol.
>> Yeah.
>> All right. All right. I should have to drink for doubting you. [laughter] >> Drink your birds.
>> [ __ ] >> Yeah, you're so true. Yeah, the best piece of steel in the world, but if it isn't properly heat treated, we're just snapping out. Absolutely. We And that's why we cut with everything we sell.
>> Yeah. If it won't if we can't cut with it, we're not going to carry it. Even our budget stuff, our $80 stuff, still tang sharp. Our budget stuff is actually 1060 steel, um carbon steel. So, uh you know, 10 years ago, 1060 was like all the rage. 1095 was uh not many forges were doing 1095 consistently well. Now, it seems like every forge can master T10 65N.
So, >> we're gonna unpeg the whole roll. What should we cut with? What do you think we should cut with? What's been a fun one to cut with? Probably >> side.
>> Now, here's the deal. If you cut it and can leave the mat standing, you get another cut.
>> How many?
>> Uh, more than Ryan would do. Ryan. Yeah.
More than two cut. Two cut. Ryan.
Yeah, Ryan's like, "Do a false edge."
I'm like, "That'll waste so much of a mat."
>> Yeah. Back when 10 1045 is still around.
Actually, 1045 isn't bad. Uh, a lot of our anime swords with 1045. We we've transitioned at 1060 on a bunch of them and even T10 on some of the anime swords and 65 amen. But 1045 will cut. You know, it's flexible. It won't hold as edge as well as 1060 1095. It's still not bad. But, you know, I'll take that over stainless.
440C stainless. Gross.
[ __ ] >> Oh, can I cut? Can I Can I cut one? All right. You got take I want >> Yuck.
Gross, dude. [clears throat] [laughter] >> Not for the reason you think.
Uh, Eric, uh, John is in Japan.
>> No, he's not.
>> No.
All right, here we go.
Itty bitty tutt >> me.
Heavy cutting.
>> Titan stout.
>> It's a heavy cutting.
>> Are we talking a heavy?
>> When you mean a heavy When you say heavy cutting katana, you mean something that you just cut with on the rag daily?
That's going to be something you can thrash. S5.
>> Yeah, multi-target S5. Uh, if edge retention is important to you, probably SX 105V, ASAP 88. Um, but we do love T10 and 1095, too.
W2 cable steel is pretty amazing. Lot of lot of blacksmiths love making stuff out of W2 cable steel.
You can't stop it. You have to Yeah, it's got to be a fast one. You got to go all the way through it.
>> Not easy, is it? Cutting something that's not that's not pegged. Yeah.
>> Although, you only got one.
>> Yeah, he he got pretty much Yeah.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah. You did it, though.
You're doing it, man.
>> That's what every redneck that's what you hear for every redneck dies. Hey, man. Hold my beer. You're doing it.
>> Meanwhile, heavy bamboo. Got you. Okay.
Something with Niku in it. Probably S5.
S5 is pretty amazing at bamboo.
>> Oh, that was nice. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
on top.
>> Yeah, S5. Um, what else would be a good bamboo? You know, 1095 and T10 actually, believe it or not, do very well. It depends on the thickness of bamboo. Of course, you want to, you know, you're going like under, you two inches.
>> S550.
>> Yeah. Yeah. 5160 SX15V.
I I think S5 is probably your go-to for if you do a lot of heavy bamboo cutting.
>> Yeah, right.
>> Thank you, Eric. Thank you, Eric.
Uh Mike You have the sword from Eye for an Eye.
I've never heard that.
>> No. What's Eye for an Eye? Is that a video game or is that a movie? What's Eye for an Eye? Tell me about this Eye for an Eye.
What's wrong with my shoes, Steve? These are awesome. They're Vans, right?
>> What the freak, man? What's wrong with that?
>> You should smell them, man. They smell like Doritos.
>> You're from Florida. Don't act like you don't see this every day.
>> It could be worse. It could be Crocs.
>> Yeah, you croc. You wear Crocs, you crocs sucker.
>> Crocs sucker.
Yeah, I skated all in the late 70s, 80s, so you know, I'm a big bands freak. Bans vision street wear. I still wear it. 56 years old and still wearing the [ __ ] I wore in the 80s. One of those nerds.
>> What time is it? What time is it? 9:30.
All right, let's uh let's cut our Yeah, let's What do you want to cut the scraps with?
>> Do we want to keep the space or cut it down? We got more bases.
>> Yes, cut. Let's keep going.
>> Is that when I had hair? [laughter] >> John skated, too. Brian, you did, didn't you? Skate? Yeah, a bunch of us skated back in the day.
>> I used to rollerblade all the time.
>> Ah, the fruit booter. There's the fruit booter now.
Did you ride scooters, too? Why should you just go all this lay it all out, Mark?
But you see some of those videos on YouTube of some of those dudes on those little razor scooters like doing quadruple back flips, man. Doing stuff like die just trying. It's pretty awesome.
Chester Skate Land closed tonight after 48 years. Wow, Dennis. Yeah, this is the batsai. This is the 10 T10 version of Batsai. Wow.
48 years. Yeah, that's insane.
>> Who's next?
>> Is Tati more comfortable to cut than katana? Hi from Kazakhstan. Hello from Kazakhstan. Good to have you, pal. Um, it depends on the Tachi. Sometimes that curvature can be too much curvature, can make it hard to index, meaning the sword turns.
>> The sword will turn in your hand. So just saying tachi they come up different sori or or or curvature. We have found the deeper the curvature a little more difficult it is to index. So your huji has to be locked in. It changes with your grip. Your tennowi is going to change that. Um but a more shallow shallow tachi. Yeah curved blade is going to be a better slicing weapon.
>> Gemini.
>> This is a Gemini back edge obliterate.
What's the difference in feel when cutting with the koshi and your clan clad hammer ephitachi and a saki zori? Couldn't could I find example?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. This is like this is Oh no.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um >> right.
>> Yeah. I I I now obviously your mileage may vary. Oh, this is the kosher right here. Big time. I feel that koshori is easier to cut with. Would you guys agree or disagree?
>> I've kori that are very >> Yeah, it depends on who makes it. I guess there are a lot of variables in there. You think one way then you >> start.
>> Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot of variables there.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I I for me, that's just me and I suck at cutting. So there's uh you know your mileage may vary based on your skill level.
>> I found like my easy to cut but it's also >> yeah but you know a heavy koshi tachi was probably best at cutting onehanded like from horseback which was the original intention. So then again, how are you cutting? Right? And if you're if you're cutting with one hand on a horse, maybe maybe that deeper koshori has its place and that's going to be a better cutting weapon in that particular situation.
to do.
>> Thanks, Eddie. Yeah, you know, I My goal is to suck less. I don't really care.
It's just fun. It's hard, though. You know, it's uh and and to those of you guys who train Japanese swords, I've been training Japanese sword art since 83 in Japan since ' 87. And there's a lot of dojo that don't cut anymore. They just don't cut. It's expensive now. A lot of kou um you know, there's not enough Japanese interested. A lot of Westerners are keeping the dojo open.
They're no longer They don't have their own dojo now. So they're renting a space at a community center and they don't teach yachty naginata or other long pole arms because there's no permanent storage and students can't carry that on a bus or a train without being cumbersome. So they've gone back to just teaching tachi. Even the soou schools that have multiple different styles, multiple different weaponry taught in the schools have settled down on something like a bow, a hanbo joe or um a katana uh because just it's easier it's easier to carry them around and procure them. So it's interesting what's happening in Japan right now. A lot of cotu are not even teaching and the current so are not even teaching some of the makimono and deno from their own ruha because nobody >> there's nobody gonna gonna cut gonna train it.
>> It's too difficult. The barrier to entry is too difficult. Oh, that was a nice cut.
But yeah, so I've had a lot of teachers in Japan that they'll they'll they'll kick your ass by looking at you. They're just not good at cutting a fixed target, which remember tameshi is is the test of the performance of the sword. If you're testing the performance of the wielder of the sword, that's called suogi >> your do have a location. Yeah, I mean postco especially in United States co really gutted it all and uh you know rents are expensive.
This is silly. And so it's very difficult to teach um or have an actual dojo. There's nowhere now in the United States can a martial arts school get insurance for cutting with a live blade.
Even the grandfathered in uh contracts, they they they've nullified them. So you can't even there's no place that will no place able to find. We're we've been trying this for now five years. We've called everybody and we've had a lot of friends that have run dojo Toyama uh type schools where cutting is a very big part of their curriculum and they're having difficulty finding any type of insurance. So that that compounds it too. There's a liability there's a risk whenever you have a live blade of course least common denominator type of thing.
So there's a lot of forces working against it. So it's just difficult. So a lot of schools they just do seat gata you know iido or gendo or just focus on kumitachi or move to like sparring or like like a hea style blunted steel sparring which I think looks fun as hell. Watch out.
Oh nice. Very nice. I got one more check.
>> You see the Koreans cut a lot of paper, but actually the hea people like Britney St. Murphy uh live St. Leafy rather. Uh there's a lot of hea people that will cut like um what's that paper called?
Like that >> just paper.
>> Rolled big paper rolls that you buy at Costco.
>> Yeah, like masking paper. They'll cut that. Uh we're gonna put put one up here and do it. Um and of course pool noodles and bamboo. It's free if you can find bamboo where you live. Tatammies got expensive. It's now we sell for $12 a roll. It's stupid. Can't get them for $2. I remember getting them for like a dollar a roll. Can't even get them.
Everything's stupid. So, but we're cutting here used at the time, which is pretty much the gold standard in Japan.
>> Korean paper cutting is pretty cool when they cut like they have the paper with the lines on it and they cut like this perfect >> horizontal cut. You out Mark? Yeah.
>> Yeah. We'll clean up all the mess by ourselves.
>> Nice.
>> All right. See you.
All right. We'll cut How much less we have to cut?
>> Yeah.
All right, let's call it. It's getting late. All right, buddy. Listen up. We're going to call it. So, thanks again for hanging out with us. Normally, we would do a tour of the shop. We'll do that tomorrow. We have a bunch of stuff Michael and I are gonna unbox. Um Oh, that was a Oh, that was a good cut.
