This footage provides a visceral demonstration of how extreme velocity transforms modest mass into massive kinetic energy. It is a sobering reminder that in orbital mechanics, speed is a far more potent variable than size.

Footage shows meteorite entering atmosphereAdded:
in New England reacting to a loud boom in the area this weekend.
>> What the was that?
>> NASA now says fragments of a meteorite that entered Earth's atmosphere on Saturday afternoon, which caused that loud boom fell into Cape Cod Bay. It was only estimated to be about 3 feet wide, but the impact was a large one. NBC 10's Devon Bates spoke with residents in our area who heard it themselves. Devin.
>> Yeah, Sam. We caught up with a man who was driving in Fort Plain, New York Saturday afternoon when he noticed something strange on the horizon. A flaming object streaking across the sky that we now know was that meteorite.
>> We were leaving my daughter's wedding and as we were driving down the road, I saw the streak and then of course you think in your head, did I really see that? But then my wife, she even said, "What was that?" And I I have no idea.
It's certainly not the thing Bob Tote will remember most about his daughter's wedding day, but it was quite a bizarre sight. His car's dash cam captured the meteorite hurling toward the Earth at speeds NASA estimates reached 75,000 mph. He had mostly forgotten about the strange site until this morning when he checked out his dash cam archive.
>> Went out, I got the stick, pulled it up, and sure enough, it was there. I just figured it was a piece of debris or something and uh that I wouldn't hear anything about it again.
And then I just posted it on uh Facebook just as a curiosity thing.
>> Bob wasn't the only one initially confused by the meteorite, but further east in New England, it wasn't the sight, but the sound.
Angela Cruz and Thomas Carol were also driving when it all unfolded.
>> We were driving and all of a sudden, we hear this noise and this rock hits the windshield. I thought there's no way that some little tiny rock that made less than an inch of an impact made that loud of a noise. Um, I thought maybe some car had crashed.
>> Whether it was a strange coincidence or the boom kicked up a rock. It's hard to tell. The humans weren't the only one thrown out of their rhythm by the boom.
Just ask their dog, Penny.
>> I think it shocked her, too. She was just kind of looking around like, "What the heck?" you know, but >> she's usually a very peaceful and calm dog, and she likes to just lay down in the car rides, but that >> that uh caught her attention.
>> Yeah, you could see the dog calm back down. Everything is okay now. New data shows the meteorite was about 3 feet wide and broke up as it sped towards the Earth's surface. NASA says the energy released on impact was equal to 300 tons of TNT. In the studio tonight, Devin Bates, NBC 10 night
