The Morgans demonstrate that true craftsmanship is rooted in engineering, showing how a deep understanding of tensile strength can prevent the inevitable failure of concrete. It is a pragmatic masterclass in respecting the physics of the ground before you build on top of it.

Plans Cancelled, Pool Patio Prep StartedAdded:
set a 16th gap.
>> So, welcome back to Outdoors with the Morgans. We've had a lot of rain lately, which is slowing down the pool progress, but uh it'll all come together here pretty quick. The good news, though, the rain is getting my grass to grow. That's a good thing. I think the rain is about over for today, but tomorrow it's like a 100% chance up to an inch of rain, and then I think things kind of settle out after that.
First thing on the agenda here, I need to uh run out by the barn and move the boom lift out of the way. I'm getting uh one more load of logs delivered. I think it's mostly oak. I have been searching for maple and cherry and everything that's come available has been oak. I mean, that's a good thing down the road, but I'd like to get some maple and cherry.
Just got to uh move this out of the way a bit so uh the truck can get turned around once he unloads.
That should do it. And uh by the way, I want to mention something. I got all this wood out here. That's a lot of red oak right there. There's a little bit of maple and cherry mixed in over there. Uh over there, that's almost all red oak.
Little bit of white oak. But the reason I've been bringing these out here, these loads from this company, uh, the price is right, but you kind of need to go through it a little bit. You know, what I'll do, I'll bring the excavator out here and kind of sort through this stuff, take the poles out that are ready for the processor. Uh, some of them, you know, you might need to cut a little bit off the end. You just kind of need to organize them, you know. And I'll get these in a pile where I can just come in like with the grapple on the skid loader or whatever and grab six or seven of them at a time.
Or I can even load them in the dump truck and take them over to the woodyard. But these aren't perfect firewood poles, but there's a lot of good wood here. And like I said, the price was right, which is why I put them out here. It's just another step, though. You kind of got to go through them. Uh, I have yet to find a supplier around here where I could say I want load after load of 20 foot long straight firewood poles uh for the processor. That just doesn't happen around here because all of the wood I get comes from clearing jobs mostly if they're building a new development or a home site or something like that. So, you pay a little bit less, but you're not going to get exactly what you want. Sometimes you get lucky, but not all the times. You know, I see loads of logs in videos like from out west where I don't know what kind of pine it is, but they're just perfectly straight logs cut to length. You just grab them, put them on the processor.
That doesn't happen around here. But, we've got the hardwoods and you can't beat that as far as firewood goes.
I may be uh I may be starting a fire when I get back. It's chilly. It is. And today I think it's supposed to get up to 70, but then for the next uh week or so, it looks pretty chilly.
It's kind of looking like May's weather is going to be more like what April should have been. April, the first part was pretty warm, not much rain, but uh things seem to be going the other direction. But anyway, right now I'm going to head back over to the house.
The hunt man and I, we're going to run out for just a bit. When I get back, we're going to start delivering some firewood.
I need to run the sawmill some today. Uh this evening, I would like to be working on the barn, but I got some bad news. Bad news for me. I got a dentist appointment today at I don't know sometime this afternoon.
I've got a broken tooth and I am dreading going to the dentist, but you got to do what you got to do. All right, change of plans. I just got a call from uh Tom Concrete with the Hoses. They're going to be here in about an hour to start forming this up. So, I'm going to hop in the dump truck, go make a firewood delivery real quick, and try to get back before they get here. I just started a fire in the uh wood stove, and every time I get in something, I'm switching it from heat to AC or from AC back to heat. And by the way, the F600 I just turned over 1,000 miles the other day. So I would say I'm only going to put about 3,3500 miles a year on this truck. Maybe 4,000 tops.
All right, I'm on my way back to the house.
Melissa just called, said the concrete crew is on site. All right, we got Tom.
>> I said a 16th gap.
>> Oh, I'll edit that out. Oh, >> no, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
>> So, we got Tom here.
Tom and Tim putting some forms in. What do you think, Tom?
Uh, we're going to augur some holes in a minute. I don't know. We're going to do it. I agree. This is all filled. But woo, that roller packed this in tight.
This is >> uh even with the rain we had, >> I like this soil, Mike. We're We're looking pretty good here.
>> Good. Good. I wonder how you don't know how many yards this will be. ballpark any >> uh well if Melissa and I could have a couple more conversations.
>> That's why I'm here.
>> We can get it up to um No, we're probably 12 yards.
>> 12 yards.
>> Yeah.
>> All right.
>> Yeah. But uh I wanted to do the grill area. I wanted to >> You see the the grill area? I like that.
But that's where I bring firewood in and stuff over, you know, to the patio and stuff. And there's >> I wonder how many yards you poured here in the last couple years. A lot. There's been a lot of concrete here.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. It's uh And I don't think we're done yet. We're still seeing a lot of stone that needs covering up.
>> Yeah. Business been good.
>> Business been real good. Yeah.
>> How's the channel doing?
>> So So >> concrete with the horses.
>> Yep. I'm still having a lot of fun with it. Um I'll probably never retire and just do videos.
>> Yeah. But that's okay. It has helped our concrete company tremendously. I just met with a uh couple last night that it made the meeting so easy.
>> They they said, "Tom, we like your creativity." Creativity.
>> Yeah.
>> And and uh >> so I threw on a couple ideas and they went on number two idea.
>> Yeah. And uh it was just it makes the meetings more enjoyable and easier and >> right >> um they trust us when we get there.
>> They get to know you a little bit before they even meet you.
>> Before I'm even there. Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> And we have some fun with the videos.
And I I was at Deca. Um I don't know, Tim, what was that? Two months ago now.
>> Where?
>> Deca.
>> Oh yeah.
>> In Ohio. And I I met a couple of guys. I was there giving out t-shirts and meeting and greeting >> and of course I got my days wrong. I'm there a day late from everybody else >> and uh so I met these couple of guys and they said, "Oh, you're Tom." Yeah, >> we like what you do with your joint clips holding the expansion joint. So it's nice like >> I never even thought to mention that in the channel. Yeah.
>> You know, we're putting some tips out there that people are liking.
>> Yeah. First time I saw you do that, I was like, "What? That's slick."
>> You don't have to hold it. Yeah.
>> You don't have to fight underneath the shoot holding it.
>> It's just little stuff like that that gives me some hope that Okay, we'll keep videoing because I think we have some stuff to offer. That's >> Yeah, you definitely do. You definitely do. What uh finish are we going to put on this?
>> We're going to do a rolled slate. We're going to do a chiseled face on the water's edge. Um probably did we do a border over there?
>> Uh I I like when we wrap it in a heavy stone border. Maybe we'll do something like that. And you have 7 ft here.
>> So if we do a 1T border, now we have six of the main. That's that's a nice ratio.
>> Really nice.
>> Sometimes if we do a 4ft and a 1ft border, >> it's too much.
>> It's it's overpowering. Yeah. We don't have enough main body. So, >> so you like this morning, you went from a basement this morning to a decorative patio this today and you're going to pour this later this week sometime.
>> Yeah, we have a wash out tomorrow.
>> Yeah.
>> Rain all day long. So, we have a uh garage demo to do and we're going to pour another garage first thing in the morning.
>> So, we'll split the crew in half and we're not needed everywhere.
>> So, yeah, we uh we just go where we can make a buck.
>> Yep. Yep. You guys stay busy, though.
You do. You already poured 30 yards this morning.
>> Yeah.
>> And it's like 10:30 now.
>> Yeah.
>> Wow.
>> Yep. Doing good.
>> That's some good compaction there, Tim.
>> Yeah. I'm getting my work out here.
Right.
>> Everybody's saying you need a bigger hammer. Sitting right over there and it's >> I gave up my gym membership.
>> All right. I'll report back in a bit.
>> All right.
Uh All right. 10 minutes. Yep. All right.
>> So, you just ordered concrete.
Let's go.
>> We can drill some holes. Okay.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
So Tom, I think we touched on it. But why are we drilling these holes?
>> Well, this is all fresh fill. And even though you rolled it in and we could barely get the pins in, everything's tight. It's still fill, you know, down 2 ft.
Is it soft? Is it going to settle?
Probably a little bit, right? Um even if it settle if it settles a foot or a quarter inch, that concrete's still going to move a little bit, >> right?
>> So if we drill one, two, three, four down this side. This is the highest side. Across the back, not so much.
That's been there for quite some time.
So now we can pour these and bring them up to the bottom of our aggregate. Now our top concrete is setting on solid.
We'll rebar from hole to hole. And now create like a little bridge.
>> Do you like come out of the hole and then over with rebar or just AC? You just want it to set on the >> Just set on there. Yeah.
>> Okay. And we made the mistake one time in my younger days, rebar sticking up out of there and everything's tied together. But now when this concrete wants to dry and shrink a little bit, >> Yeah.
>> you'll get a hairline crack right around that hole.
>> I got off of it. Or in the winter time when the ground freezes and heaves an inch, half inch.
>> Yeah.
>> It needs to be able to move, >> right? And if those are locked into the ground and it can't, you're gonna get a crack.
>> That makes sense. It would just pull off of them basically.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So concrete is very strong compression strength, but tensil strength, uh, not so strong, >> right?
>> So that's why you need the steel reinforcement.
And I guess we're talking about flexual strength, like is it going to bend and flex, right?
>> Let it freeze. No, it's just not there.
So you have to you have to allow for that to move. Um, if you look at bridge decks, I feel they follow the same guidelines. You know, everything on that bridge, you drive across it, you can feel it move, >> right? Do you ever when you're filming always have airplanes fly over when you actually have a quiet a quiet >> truck dumping behind you, guys telling stories, swearing? It's like, God, hey, could you cut us some slack here?
>> So, this is a nice relaxing day, though.
You know, it's uh uh Tim and I here, the guys, I just got off the phone with Tommy. They're prepping a big driveway.
Steven's prepping a garage. So, we're spread everywhere. And uh that's what we're trying to do more so this year is get spread out. We brought on a couple new guys >> and we still might add to the crew and and get it a little bit bigger and and part ways in the morning. Like right now we do morning pour together.
>> Yeah.
>> And uh >> then go from there.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> They're at least four feet deep. Maybe deeper.
>> Yeah. Well, you started I could hear hear you starting to bind up and hit solid down there, too. Hey, Denny.
>> Yep. Yep.
That was pretty much all your equipment when you first started, huh?
>> Bringing back some memories there.
I wish I had the fat tires now. These are nice.
>> Yeah, >> I thought it could. They have it. They're so spoiled.
So, every once in a while we do one of these. I'm just not sure why they're not here.
So, they about got all the uh the peers done and then they need to build they're going to pour like a little added support underneath that auto cover over there where you see Tom.
So, uh, we don't want to get this bonding wire, which we all know. Don't call it a ground driver, >> right? The bonding wire.
I had no idea. Andy explained it all to me.
He spent 45 minutes on the job site with me one time explaining it to me. I knew a little bit about it, but not the amount of detail, right, >> that he gave me. And boy, was that helpful. Just understanding really helped me, you know, to do these projects a little bit better.
>> Yeah. You know, >> can you go any faster?
>> You So, you went to school with Tim, right?
>> Yeah. Uh we we second grade I think we started. Yeah.
>> No, fifth grade. Yeah, fifth grade.
>> So, we want to get a nice bed of concrete against this auto closer box.
There's a lot of weight in there, and we didn't just want to rely on the surface concrete to hold it in place. Uh again, it's all about movement down the road.
So this will lock that in.
>> They're all on stone. A friend strain around that.
>> So that's as much as you can.
Thank you.
a half a dozen more. Maybe we'll auger another hole or two if we have concrete left over.
>> Okay.
>> Um I think we're out of the danger zone.
>> Yeah.
>> But if we have the concrete, we might as well use it.
>> Right.
>> I want to get a good 5 in on top of this. That's why I'm holding it down.
You should come and video all of our work. That way I don't have to do it.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I don't know how you do it for real. Like like when when there's stuff come concrete coming and running around and >> and that's why I don't so much because I feel like >> I'm missing so much. It's not worth doing. I'm not doing a good video.
>> No, I think you do good. I think people understand. It's just it's chaos whenever >> like when you like I wish I had a camera going. That's good footage.
>> When you guys poured that barn out there like I was having trouble keeping up with you with a camera, you know.
So again, we don't want this concrete bonding to this. We want it to be just setting on. That's why I said yes.
Get uh what's your grandson's name?
>> Bo.
>> Bo. We'll get Bo out here and get some handprints in this.
Nobody ever gives up that wheelbarrow.
Nope. I don't think >> What's a wheel hold? An eighth of a yard.
>> Um I'd say that's a a good guess. You know, eight barrels to a yard. Yeah.
>> Yeah. So it's every bit of five or 600 lb. A yard weighs 2 tons,000 lb.
Yeah. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Here comes.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Ah, heat.
Heat. Heat.
So, this is something you don't see very often.
>> Oh, this feels good.
>> Oh, he's sitting down.
>> This feels good.
>> Just sitting down. You got just about You need a little bit more stone, right?
>> Yeah. Steve just went to get five ton.
Um, we have a couple of rebar left.
We're going to be a little bit short, but we're going to be pretty close.
>> Three, three wire.
>> And then >> how many pulls do you think you do a year?
>> Oh, >> five to 10.
>> Okay.
>> Uh, did you say the owner, the installer here? Yeah.
>> Alpine. We do probably three or four for them a year. Um, we have a couple other pool companies that we work for. The problem is they call and say, "Hey, we got a pool in. Can you do it?" And it's like, "Yeah, we're 3 months out."
>> Yeah.
>> They want it now.
>> Yeah.
>> So, uh, you and I talked last year. Mike called me last year and said, "Hey, I got a pool for your buddy Morgan. You going to do it?" So, he was already lining up cuz he knows.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, um, >> right.
>> Get it on the schedule early and cuz it's uh that's one of the things without you it's just a hole in the ground it's not going to be now sometimes the water's in it when you pour right >> yeah we just did one last week and they had to pour in last year and I did video this so it'll be coming up in probably a month um the water was probably right around freezing you know and so Steve's like I'll get in like, "All right, Steve, I'm going to fire up a camera." He got into like knee deep and he's like, >> "Can't do it."
>> Nah, nah.
>> So, we touched up the face a little bit and um it was a big project. So, look for that one coming up. It was >> Yeah, >> it was a big project. We we did the pool house last year. Uh I augured holes similar to what we did here for the for a couple of pads >> and got the pool house in. rainstorm came in cover with like it was one of those videos like >> like the viewers love.
>> So I'm going to I'm going to catch you off guard here. Someone young just starting out in a business not necessarily concrete. What like what if you knew then what you knew now? Would you have done anything different when you first started out?
>> H Well, you did catch me off guard.
Would I do anything different? I don't think so.
>> See, that's what I always say.
>> I'm sure there would be. Um, I think in business it never shuts off. And if you're okay with that mindset, >> Yeah.
>> like if if you, hey, I'm going away for the weekend. I'm not answering my phone.
Well, somebody else, they're calling somebody else. They're and they're going to answer their phone.
>> Yeah. Um, >> I did like a lot of dumb stuff start, but you I wouldn't change anything because that's how I learned stuff.
Yeah.
>> You know what I mean? Just Yeah.
>> Yeah. Called paying tuition.
>> Yeah.
Right.
>> Yeah. I have plenty of that. Like I I'm probably my worst enemy, you know?
>> Yeah.
>> That that should be close enough.
That'll work. Oh, well, it didn't, you know.
>> Yeah. Uh, but as long as it's not too much and you learn from it.
>> Um, >> boy, I wish I had some good advice to some young person starting out.
>> But I think that's a big one. It's It's a It's not a job. It's your life.
>> It's your Yeah. Here. Here you go. My advice would be go for it. If you're thinking of doing it, go for it.
>> Yeah.
>> And go all in. Give it 110% all the time. And uh >> especially when you're young, you ain't got much to lose. You know what I mean?
>> You got time.
>> Yeah. You got time to >> and and you think you got a lot of time.
Uh but boy does it go quick.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, here here I am 42 years in business and it went quick.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, I I think back to Oh, did we pour that driveway what 10 years ago?
No, Dad. That was that was like 30 years ago.
Yeah, >> unfortunately it still looks good.
>> Yeah. Well, we should have these table talks more often.
>> Yeah, this is nice.
>> All right, >> so you have a great place here, Mike.
So, the pool's going to be a nice addition.
>> That's perfect spot for it right there.
Right off of this. And >> you don't even really need like a bath house or anything. There's a bathroom and shower and everything's right in there. And >> a nice setup.
>> Well, good deal.
Black Friday for the poor weather permitting.
Man, we're gonna I'm cooking for everyone on Friday.
>> Oh boy, that's a good Friday there.
>> Tell you guys, don't bring a lunch.
>> They'll be throwing it over the fence.
>> What's on the menu?
>> Tenderloin. That's what we're going to make. Beef tenderloin. It'll be good.
>> Can I bring anything?
>> No.
>> We'll be all set up. That'll be good. I can't wait. This is going to This will make all the difference in the world.
This patio wasn't going to be this big, but Melissa got Tom when I was >> That's probably our biggest complaint.
>> Too small.
>> Wish we would have gone bigger.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> They want to do more furniture. Can you add on here? It's like, uh, we could, but >> Yeah.
>> So, I mean, think of that. If you're when you're out bidden jobs, you're like, whenever I go to meet a customer, I ask I get their opinion. Hey, you've been thinking about this area a lot longer than I have. What do you want to do here? Do you want to do like just a table and a grill? Do you want to have a fire pit? Do you want to have like furniture, outdoor furniture? Like what a TV? What do you want to do? And then you start measuring out those different areas. Now it doesn't take long. Now you have an idea and you know you do you want to bump like I was talking to you about your grill here, >> throwing it out there. You shot it down, but at least you knew it was an option.
That's all.
>> Right. Yeah.
That's good.
>> So, and next year we'll be more remember last year when that was kind of like my trip to the D. Remember last time you're here? I said, "Yeah, whatever." Yeah, I know.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Well, good deal. We appreciate it, Tom. Thanks.
>> Yep. Absolutely.
>> All right, Tom and the guys just left, but uh I'm excited. This is going to be That's a whole lot of patio right there.
That's good. Plenty of room for everybody. my opinion, I think the patio is just as important, actually more important than the pool.
I like it. It's going to be great.
Tomorrow, Tom is going to come and put a drain in here along here because the pool is a little bit higher than this patio here.
Kept that up. So, rain water or whatever will go into the drain and uh should be good.
But anyway, I think that's about it for today's video.
