Witold Pilecki, a Polish resistance fighter, voluntarily entered Auschwitz concentration camp in 1940 to gather evidence of Nazi atrocities, building a secret resistance network inside the camp for nearly three years before escaping and delivering one of the first detailed reports about the horrors of Auschwitz to the outside world.
