10 Horror Movies I Highly HIGHLY Recommend!Added:
Welcome back to Ghost Pirate Entertainment. I'm your host, Kanan Becker, and today we talk about 10 more horror movies and series that I highly recommend.
And with that, let's get to the list.
The McKini Family Home Videos is a 2024 analog horror series created by and starring Nick and Molly Katr. A loving father's obsession with recording family memories takes a sinister turn as his home videos reveal a dark presence threatening to destroy everything he holds dear.
This is one of the more upsetting and just creepy things I've seen in quite a while. I mean, this really got to me.
And I think a lot of it is I always get myself when it comes to analog horror in the right space for it. Like mentally, you have to be a bit patient and ready to kind of watch things that don't unfold in a normal movie or series way.
They're not real linear. They don't have a lot of the same story beats and things like that. Instead, they're put together with a lot of mundane images that on their surface don't seem like much, but in the context of what the story is building, they get really eerie. Besides that, I always get myself in a dark room with no distractions around me because you have to be locked into something like this. You got to pay attention to it because you'll be watching a scene that's just basically a still shot of the front of a house and then over to the side in the background you'll see a little image or or a shadow or something that just gives you a little crumb of things to come. But as this gets going, it gets more and more dark and just ominous. What is so creepy to me about this is how authentic it feels. Like it really feels like a lot of the VHS videos I remember growing up watching of family memories and things that I recorded myself on little handheld cameras and or watched with family at Christmas time or whatever. It feels so authentic that it's really easy to get sucked into it. But this is one that is definitely not going to work for everybody because in a lot of ways this kind of reminds me of Skinnamarink. The way it's put together and skinn did not work for a lot of people. A lot of people hate it. Think it's the most boring thing ever. And so if you're in that camp, then I would probably avoid this. But if you were someone that at the very least could understand and and enjoy some elements of Skinnamarink, then I think you should check this out because there is much more going on in this. And you do have more dialogue and more things than in Skinner, but a lot of this is still static imagery, weird creepy sound effects, and little by little, you're fed, you're dripfed, you know, very slowly this eerie situation.
But I think the more I put together what is actually going on here, the more ominous and just terrifying this became.
And I will say that this does more than skinny. there is more creepy imagery and things, especially in the last few episodes of this, it starts to get really ominous and you do see some things going on. I just think this is something that won't land for everyone, but for the right audience, if you are like me and and can get yourself in the right headsp space and the right environment to watch this, this thing is really worth seeing. So, if you're a fan of analog horror and found footage, this is one you absolutely need to see.
Ain't nobody innocent.
>> I don't want nothing but blood.
Is God Is is a 2026 dark drama thriller written, produced, and directed by Alicia Harris in her feature directorial debut. It stars Cara Young, Malori Johnson, and Viva A. Fox. Two sisters embark on an epic quest for revenge, confronting a charged family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths.
>> Make your daddy dead. Real dead.
>> This seem a little crazy.
>> Not as crazy as setting your wife on fire in front of your kids. So, I saw this one last night and going in, I didn't think I'd be talking about it on this channel at all because on the surface from the trailers and whatever, it didn't seem like it would be horror related at all or even thriller for that matter. It felt much more like a drama, maybe a comedic drama, but not what I would cover. And so I was honestly just going to see this because it looked interesting and there was nothing else playing that I hadn't seen and I just needed to get out of the house. I got to tell you, I was so surprised by this movie on many levels. For one, it's a lot better than I expected it to be. The performances are incredible, but the thing that really stood out the most to me was just how unique it feels. from the quirky way that it's shot, the way the dialogue is written, the story, the way it unfolds. There's this real mystery quality about it where the whole time you're little by little fed this complete story and you're kind of learning it along with these sisters.
So, they don't know exactly the whole story and then you're also trying to figure out who they're even going after along with them at the same time. On top of that, there is a quirky, twisted sense of humor to it, but it's not something I would call a comedy by any means. It just has some humor, kind of more of situational kind of humor scattered around throughout. But the biggest surprise for me about this was how evil and twisted this movie gets, how horror it gets. I mean, I won't say this is straight up a horror movie or anything like that. It's definitely in that thriller range, but there's a lot of horrific imagery and especially the final act. This movie gets pretty hardcore and and felt a lot more horror than I was expecting. So much so that I am very comfortable with talking about this on the channel. But just in general, this movie is just full of surprises. It takes some crazy twists and turns and I love the ending of this because it gives you a clearcut ending, but at the same time you could easily kind of see more there. And I I talked to a few people after leaving the theater and I had a perspective on this that they didn't really have. They kind of took it more for the surface level meaning and and more of cut and dry what you see. And I took it to mean something a little different. And I can't say cuz that would spoil the ending of this movie, but I think there's a lot more depth to this and layers to this and and some kind of hidden meaning and and stuff that goes on in this much more than I think a lot of people will come away with on the surface. But either way, even if you think more deeply into it, you'll get something from it if you look at it that way or if you just take it for face value, there's a lot of enjoyment and entertainment here as well. It's one of those movies that is artful but doesn't lose sight of that it's here to entertain you. And so there's lots of action, lots of wild, gory, bloody scenes. Like it goes in some crazy directions that'll absolutely keep you having a good time throughout the entire runtime. But this is one that's really flying under the radar. I haven't heard anybody review this or talk about it at all, but it is in theaters at the time of recording this.
But even if you don't get a chance to go see it in theaters, keep an eye out for it because as soon as you can, I think you absolutely should see this one. It's one that I highly, highly recommend.
Mads is a 2024 French horror thriller directed by David Maro. It stars Lucille Gol, Lorie Pavey, and Milton Reach. A teenager stops off to see his dealer to test a new drug before heading out on a night of partying. But on his way home, he picks up an injured woman, and the night takes a surreal turn.
So, I've been enjoying a lot of French horror movies lately, and this is one from the last couple years that I am a big fan of. For one, David Maro, the guy that directed this, is the same filmmaker that did the movie Them, another French film. I talked about it not too long ago, but it's like a home invasion movie with a twist that's incredible. This movie is right up there with that. There's a very unique quality about this. For starters, this movie is a complete wer. Like the entire movie is shot in one take. And it's crazy because I didn't believe that when I first heard about that after seeing this. So that there was no way this is actually a wer.
But when you look into it behind the scenes, they really did. They practiced this a bunch like it was a play and then they shot it multiple times and went with the best take. But there are no cuts in this and it's staggering after you see this to realize that this entire thing was done that way because it is so tight. It's so well done. But it's really cool the way that it works because the movie is basically following one character and then you'll reach a point in the story and then it just very seamlessly rolls into it with another character and this character kind of goes this way. these characters go this way and now you're following them and it'll swirl back around and throughout and and so it just has this real fluid way because of that. And it never feels slow or bogged down at all because you're constantly moving from one thing to the next, which is just so cool because most of the time when you see something that is in real time, there's a lot of things you have to kind of suspend this police to to buy. Cuz like if you remember back in the day, there was that TV series 24 and each episode was one hour and it was like you're supposed to buy that all of this stuff happened in just that one hour. And like I said, you have to suspend disbelief.
But but with this, because you're following multiple characters, it feels like it makes sense. But I don't want to spoil and say exactly what this movie is about because it's much more fun if you go into this as blind as possible and just kind of follow it as it unfolds for you the way I did. And even though it did have some buzz when it came out, and I have recommended it before on the channel back when it came out, I still think there is quite a few people out there that haven't seen this. I don't think it still gets the credit it deserves. So, if you've never seen this, do yourself a favor and make this the next thing that you watch.
Isn't that wonderful?
The Life of Chuck is a 2024 dark fantasy drama written, co-produced, edited, and directed by Mike Flanigan. It's based on a 2020 novella of the same name by Stephen King and stars Tom Hiddston, Karen Gillum, and Mia Sarah. It's a lifeaffirming genrebending story about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles CR. But if you have heart, you have hope and you have heart in you.
>> So before you come at me, I am not at all trying to say this is a horror movie. I just think this movie has slipped through the cracks in a lot of ways. It's very, very, very good. And it is written originally by Stephen King.
And this is produced, directed, edited, everything by Mike Flanigan. And these are both big-time heavy hitters in the genre of horror. And so even though this might not satisfy your horror needs, this is still a damn good movie that deserves a lot more press and detention than it gets. And it's frustrating because it's one of those movies that doesn't have this massive budget. So it didn't have a huge amount of press. It doesn't fit into a really any category.
It's not a comedy. It's not a horror movie. It's not exactly even a drama.
It's kind of a a lot of different things mixed together. And like I said, I'm not saying it's horror, but there is some creepy imagery. There is some thriller elements about this. But more than anything, it's just a very difficult movie to kind of put a finger on and identify what it is exactly. What it is is an incredible journey through the life of this man that will resonate with a lot of people, especially if you're middle-aged like I am. There is so much of this movie that will hit home and be very profound and moving to you. but it's also entertaining and extremely well shot, directed. The cinematography is phenomenal. The art design, the costume design, the entire way that it's edited and put together. It's cinema art at its finest. And so, yeah, maybe it doesn't exactly fit on this list with the rest of these movies or on this channel for that matter, but I do think it's so good that a lot of you deserve the opportunity to at least know about this. And so if it sounds intriguing and interesting to you, I think you absolutely should check it out because I think you really will end up enjoying it.
>> Make it Sputnik is a 2020 Russian sci-fi horror movie directed by Igor Aberminko in his feature directorial debut. It stars Oxana Akasha, Porota Fedorov, and Theodore Bonderchuk. The lone survivor of a spaceship incident hasn't returned home alone. Hiding inside his body is a dangerous creature.
This is such a welldone sci-fi horror movie that I don't think gets enough praise because it is so eerie and uncomfortable and does things in a kind of unique way. The story is told in this kind of slow proddding dry way that very much kind of fits a lot of Russian horror where they're much more dialogue driven than they are big explosions or whatever. But the amount of dread and anxiety building that this movie does gives it this really uncomfortable feel through the entire movie. And my favorite thing about it is how unique it feels. like the way the alien creature thing is designed, the way it functions and works, all of that is unique. It just doesn't really feel like anything else out there. And that's not to say it isn't similar to other things or on paper doing roughly things we've seen before, but it's how it's delivered, how it all comes together. Also, the lore of this, if you understand at all about the Cold War space race and and how it all worked in Russia and stuff, if you understand any of that history, this movie hits even harder because there's just tons of creepy stories about cosminauts that were basically left in space floating around until they died.
And like lots of disasters, lots of things going on that the rest of the world never heard about. And even to this day, a lot of those things are still kind of kept under secret. And so things like that just kind of go a long way at at kind of helping to build the lore and and fantasy of this movie. But I think it's a real creepy little gem.
So if you're looking for a sci-fi horror movie, this is a great pick.
Penny Dreadful is a 2014 horror drama series created by John Logan. It stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, and Rory Conir. Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein, and medium Vanessa Ives unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London, >> where some unfortunate souls are cursed to live always.
That sounds like a warning.
>> It's an invitation.
>> This is one of the most fun series out there. If you're a fan of horror and have not seen this, I'm telling you, this will be your new favorite thing because every episode goes into some different creepy horror things and it has almost like an XFiles fill about it, but dealing with the monsters and especially the old monster stories with kind of a universal monster twist to it all. Besides that, the cast is great and the different twist and turns and the way the story is woven together, it keeps you extremely engaged. What's also great about it is because it's made for showtime and wasn't a network TV series, it's bloody, it gets gruesome. It deals with more of the brutal side of things.
So, it isn't all neutered down for for TV. And it blows my mind that the series ended almost 10 years ago now. It lasted for like I think three seasons and they're all available on Paramount Plus if you have Paramount. But it's such a great rewatch. It's one of those series that even if you've seen it, it's a really fun one to put back on. It's stylish while also still being gritty and has this fun way of presenting the supernatural to where it feels like a real thing. Like it just does a great job of being what it is. Besides that, the costume design and and the way it's put together, the look of it, it's one of the best looking TV series you'll ever find. And so, if it's been a while since you've seen this, or if you've never seen it, I think it's an absolute mustsee for any fan of horror.
Exit 8 is a 2025 Japanese mystery psychological horror movie co-written and directed by Ginki Kawamira and stars Kisinari Nimiah, Nana Kamasu, and Yamamoto Kachi. A man becomes increasingly desperate when he realizes he is trapped in a subway station needing to complete a mission to get out.
you guys.
So, this is one of my favorites for sure this year, and it's very much flying under the radar. It had a theatrical release, but it was only in theaters for a few weeks, but I wanted to mention it again. I I did talk about it back when I saw it in theaters, but I wanted to bring it up again this week because it's now streaming. It's like $10 to rent, and I'm not saying to spend $10, so don't come at me saying I'm not made of money. Like I'm not even suggesting that. I'm just letting you know that it is available for rent. And either way, now that it's streaming to rent, it means that it won't be too much longer before I'm sure it'll pop up on one of the streaming services somewhere. But this movie is so well done. And if you're one of those like me that loves to see all of the best horror movies that come out every year, or at least as many of them as you can, this is one to definitely keep on your radar.
especially if you're a fan of liinal space horror or horror that has to deal with time and sci-fi elements. Like this movie has got a lot of cool elements packed into it. But besides that, it is such a simple idea of this guy who is trapped in the subway station and has to figure out how to get out. But yet, the way this movie is presented, the way it slowly gives you more and more of who this character is, who he is, and what he's about, and and the demons and things that he is wrestling with, it adds a really complex layer to this that makes the movie so much better than it seems like it's going to be. But to this point, and the back rooms hasn't come out yet at the time of recording this, so I haven't seen it. But as far as anything that has come out to this point, this one is the most eerie ominous at being that liinal space, that place between places where it's void of of anything normal and plays with dimensions. And I don't want to spoil this, so I'm not going to say more than that, but but it's really creative in the way that it's put together and and the kind of game in a lot of ways that you're playing while watching this. And so, I just think it's a great little horror movie that absolutely deserves your attention. So, definitely keep an eye out for it.
>> Just a little further.
We Bury the Dead is a 2025 zombie survival horror movie written and directed by Zack Hilditch. It stars Daisy Ridley, Brendan Thuaitz, and Mark Cole Smith. After a catastrophic military disaster, the dead don't just rise, they hunt. And as Ava searches for her missing husband, what she finds is far more terrifying.
>> The odd ones that do come back online are dosile.
You have nothing to fear.
>> This is another one that I have mentioned back when it was in theaters.
The reason I bring it up this week is it's available on Hulu and Disney Plus.
So, I know most you guys have those streaming services. And so, if you have yet to see this, you need to check it out. I'm telling you, people are sleeping on this movie. And it may not work for everybody, but it deserves a lot more people to at least give it a look. Put it on 10, 20 minutes. If it doesn't peique your interest, if it's not keeping you in invested in it, then turn it off. But now that it's available on Hulu and Disney Plus, it is free to give a look if you have those services.
But I am just a big fan of it. It's another one of my favorites from this year because yes, it's a zombie movie and I know that's been done to death and it feels like we've seen it done in every way imaginable, but it's the way this is told, the way this movie is put together and a lot of the twist and turns that this takes, the human story in it that makes it so compelling. And besides that, the way the zombies are in it, they feel different. the way they look, the way they function, some of the little nuances about them. It's creepy and unique to this movie. Also, the sound design is so spooky. Like, just some of the stuff they do with the crunching of teeth and things like that. It's really haunting stuff. Also, Daisy Ridley is phenomenal in this. I knew she was a good actor. I had no idea she had this in her. I mean, she absolutely kills this role. But to me, the biggest star of the show, so to speak, here is the way this movie looks. I believe it was shot in New Zealand or Australia. I forget which one, but it looks just breathtaking. I mean, so incredible from the B-roll landscapes to the crazy way that it's shot where you see these cities and ruins. Like, it just looks incredible. Like a lot of stuff is done practically, but there is definitely quite a bit of CGI in this. But it's so well done that it's seamless. It's hard to even be able to tell where the CGI ends and the practical begins and vice versa. Like very very well done in that regard as well. But I just think this is a really well done, fascinating movie that that has a lot of layers and a lot of components and a lot of emotional meat on the bone so to speak to it. And so I think without a doubt it's one you absolutely should give a look.
Sera the Bone Woman is a 2022 Mexican Peruvian supernatural body horror movie co-written and directed by Michelle Garza Sea in her feature directorial debut. It stars Natalyia Solon, Alfonso Dosel, and Merra Battala. Valeria has long dreamed of becoming a mother. So, after learning she is pregnant, she expects to feel happy. Yet, something is horribly wrong.
This is such a damn good movie that absolutely no one talks about and it frustrates the hell out of me. I don't know why that is because there is so much here like this. There's tons of meat on the bone. Like I get frustrated all the time with horror movies being paper thin where there's no real story.
There's no real characters to unpack.
There's not these complexities and situations that are set up that that feel like not only are they building to something, but then pay off when they get there. But this movie has it all.
For one, who is more vulnerable than a pregnant woman? I mean, that is like the definition of vulnerable because it's two people that are in danger. And so you put this in this situation and then this ungodly like terrifying creature, whatever you want to call it, like I I'm not going to spoil exactly what's going on here, but this creepy entity who's preying on them, but in the most twisted, weird body horror ways.
Like, I mean, it's nightmare fuel.
Besides that, some of the imagery in this is just so so scary. like stuff that is burned into my mind that I'll never forget. It just looks incredible.
But also, the performances are so damn good here. Especially Natalyia Solon, her performance here is just incredible.
Like, she's so believable. the emotional range that she has, like the plight that this character is under and how she conveys that through not just dialogue, but with her facial expressions, body language, stuff like that. Then besides that, the body performance she has to give because there is some pretty wild body horror in this really just amazing stuff. It's also really moody and atmospheric and the way the story unfolds. It has this cool lore and backstory that is interesting and complex as well. Stuff that's based in real lore and legend. And so it does a great job of interweaving that stuff into this story. Just in general, I think it's a remarkable little film that deserves a lot more attention that it gets. And so I think it's one you absolutely should add to your list.
VFW is a 2019 action horror thriller directed by Joe Beos. It stars Steven Lang, William Sadler, and Martin Cove. A typical night for veterans at a VFW turns into an allout battle for survival when a desperate teen runs into the bar, fleeing from a violent gang. You'll all die very, very slowly. You last. But >> what are you going to do? Do it.
>> Cuz you make a mistake.
>> I'm going to cut your heart out.
>> This movie is everything I want in a fun movie. Like one to just grab your popcorn, stuff it in your face, maybe have a beer or two, and just relax and have a great time with. Like this is that. It is so fun. For one, the cast is made up of a lot of these old school action heroes that we grew up with in a lot of cases. Some of them like Steven Lang is still rocking and in and various movies kicking some ass like the cast in general is incredible in this. But then it's made by Joe Beos, which if you are aware of his films, like he has a real gritty, brash kind of style to what he does with foul language, lots of blood, lots of violence, fighting, like just a real grittiness to the way he directs movies. Things are flashy and vibrant and and just frenetic and all over the place. And so for an action kind of horror movie like this, he is perfectly suited to do something like this.
Besides that, it takes some really fun twists and turns and keeps you guessing throughout the movie on on exactly what all is going on here. But when you boil it all down, it really is just a fun movie. Not a movie to overthink or take too serious, but just to have a good time with. And so, I think if you're in the mood for a violent, kick-ass horror thriller, this is a great time and a perfect pick for this Saturday night.
So, do yourself a favor this weekend.
Pick one of the movies off of this list.
Grab your popcorn and your candy AND ENJOY. AND LIKE ALWAYS, thank you so much for watching. Please crush that like button. And remember guys, horror can be fun. And I'll see you all next time.
>> Let's all go to the lobby.
Let's all go to the lobby.
Let's all go to the lobby to get ourselves a treat.
>> Delicious.
>> The popcorn can't be beat.
Those sparkling dreams are just dead.
