Bhagavan Shankaracharya, the 8th century Advaita Vedanta philosopher, embodied both upasana (devotional worship) and vanti (philosophical understanding) equally, demonstrating that spiritual perfection requires balancing the manifest relative world with the unmanifest absolute reality. His teachings emphasize that while upasana involves engaging with the world through devotion and ritual, vanti involves transcending the world through knowledge and realization; neither approach alone leads to complete spiritual liberation, and both must be practiced together for balanced spiritual growth.

On Bhagavan Shankaracharya @ Minneapolis 2026 (English)Added:
Life is a time for life.
Nothing to do, nowhere to go.
100%.
Who ask you zero complaint level happy?
Sri Krishna, Sri Krishna, Sri Krishna, Sri Krishna Gurha, Guru Vishnu.
When we hear talk, think about Bhagan Shankara normally it becomes one-sided thinking.
See when we say shankarajara only see and such people particularly those who are following the path of syasa they give over emphasis to the ada but life is not only one part we have to understand exhaustively. completely see.
So there are two aspects.
One is the manifest life and second is that which is manifesting as life.
Both of them have to be clearly understood and lived.
See normally what happens we take only one side either we get into the upasana puja pi to such an extent that the other part is sidelined.
The other extreme is only bad.
Bengali say banta bant means without teeth.
They talk only about vanta and they are not interested in the other part. These two approaches is upasana and in this upasana you are more expert than me chanting bhajan kan and all kinds of things doing sava etc that part of our life is essential and that alone is not everything we have to have a perfect balance See like keeping awake only all the time 24/7 keeping awake not possible not advisable sleeping all the time 247 is not advisable not possible.
So life has to be a perfect balance between manifestation and withdrawal.
If this is not done, we become one-sided and when we become one-sided, we become abnormal to live in this world.
And therefore, we have to understand these two aspects of Bhagwan Shakarachara.
Now the other part you already know Bhagwashankar achara is considered as Jagat Guru. All the great masters have endorsed it.
But don't talk about today Jagat Guru.
Any Tom Dick and Harry writes before him Jagat Guru are not talking about them because it is not a award given by any government like you know Padma Padma and Padma.
These are all political. It has nothing to do with the truth.
So Jagat Guru he is called endorsed by all the wise mahatmas of the world is only because he has taken care of both aspects manifest aspect and the unmanifest aspect.
Unless this balance is established perfectly in our life, we will be one-sided and that is not completion of living our life. Therefore, these two aspects are called as seeant on one side and the other part is called a chidillas.
Chit villas is the expansion of the chit.
So before we come to this I'll tell you some basics in katoan we come towards the end one mantra where it is said the truth is to be recognized experience as e is existence See sir and this s its potentiality like the fire is the sun its potentiality is the burning ability.
So s is the reality the truth and chit is its potentiality. You call it by different names like maya shi etc. Then this shy or maya expresses as bliss anandra.
The three things s the reality its potentiality chit expression of that potentiality is anund.
So sit ananda.
Now how this chit expresses in between stage.
So it is referred by three words. One is ita.
Now we have some desire.
For that desire what is the cause?
Two reasons. One a sense of incompleteness.
And second a sense of otherness.
This is how the ita or the desire is born.
In the deep sleep experience, there is no sense of otherness and there is no sense of incompleteness and therefore there is no desire and in the absence of the desire what experience is is bliss.
See, so when the teacher says again When we attain a state of freedom from desires, desire free experience is God realization.
Now what is our life in general? Two things.
Those who are struggling to fulfill their desires that is one part one path and the second is those who are giving up the desire through wisdom and understanding and learning from their own experience.
See the majority of us fall in the first category.
Therefore, gastas or anybody who takes this relative world as real. The whole life is only one thing like whatever we do in our life. What were we do?
A simple mathematics anything you do in life. See for example most of you are here married. I don't know whether somebody is happy or not but I see everybody married here from the face. I can recognize there was one American he asked me this question.
Why you Indian ladies have on their forehead?
They are married. Oh, no chance. No chance.
That is a sign of married girls. Then what about the jets? They don't have any any mark on their face. Not necessary from the face. You can there is no glow. There is a blow.
Two questions. Third question.
One Indian lady I asked I said mama you people putish.com and I have seen there are different sizes.
What is the meaning of those sizes?
If the size is big, then there is big love for the husband. If the size is less to that proportion the love for the husband. If there is very little and if there is no sign poor husband.
So what are the signs of happiness when you have no desire? So all the things that we are doing in our life is only for one purpose. We want to fulfill our desires and become happy.
This is samsar.
Now those who are living this way one day by God's grace something happens and we turn the direction of our life from the dog word to the God word.
The other day somebody asked me Swami you don't like dogs. I said those who like God why they will like dogs?
But what is the reason?
I said dog lovers they wants love.
I have trained my dog and when I come from my work he's waiting. He has no other purpose doing the basria.
And when I come his duty starts he'll climb on you and then do white wash and get his organic salt everything and then you hug and kiss and then you feel he really loves me.
Now one day I come home and after having come home because that day was a total disaster everything was wrong. Frustrated I come home now doggy doesn't know anything. He knows only one thing start but when he comes now today I am very angry. You don't abuse him. Throw him away. He doesn't run away. He goes below the sofa and there again he starts pranayam.
After that then I take a bottle empty and a drum is filled and then I come to senses.
Then I call Tommy and Tommy comes out.
try to do this thing with human beings.
Therefore, when we are doing so many things, one day something happens which is never expected, what we call a disaster in our life.
Then we turn towards Allah.
See now to understand this take your own experiences. I'm telling you only from your experiences minimum books.
See see when the dreams are going on beautifully such dreams never break.
Imagine any dream.
One dream I can think of is only Radesh Khanna sitting on a motorcycle somewhere in Switzerland and some hundi sitting behind you and you are going there. Such a dream will never break.
But in that dream your motorcycle skids goes into a deep valley.
You get up.
Same way everything is goody goody goody goody goody goody goody one day suddenly most unexpected thing happens meaning what we go beyond the area of cause and effect when we go beyond the area of cause and effect then we start rethinking about life.
This is exactly Bhagat Gita.
In the first chapter, Bhagar Krishna created a situation for Arjun which was most unexpected.
He knew with whom he has to fight. But Bhagar Krishna told him remember you have to fight with your guru with your grandfather. There are no need to tell him.
But it was planted by Bhagan Krishna.
Then only we start rethinking about life is our life only.
Eat, sleep, procreate and be carry the big insurance. Is that all? What life is? See, therefore as human beings we have to awake and for that we have to learn from our daytoday experiences.
Therefore these two parts of our life one part is our whole life is spent in fulfilling our desires.
Now when we do basana when we go to the temple when we offer bribe to the god what for oh god please do this do this many houses I have seen outside the house there are two small places one side is ganji other side is hanumanji kindly be our watchman okay we are sleeping inside okay we want protection from god God and we want desires to be fulfilled. Nothing wrong do that. So one part is fulfilling our desire is our life.
Second part is learning from our own experiences of life.
So far we have fulfilled so many desires. Have we come to a point now there are no more desire burden on our head?
See we have to pause in life.
You know there is everywhere sign stop.
See says Karmachan loan means our life. What we have been doing right from childhood only one thing unsuccessful efforts to fulfill our desires.
One desire we fulfill the second comes second fulfill the third comes see and our whole life is spent only in this to understand take our own daytoday life it is heavily raining you can't go out and it is such a cozy time and you take the quilt around you and now what to do uh if I get a nice cup of tea it will so wonderful Now this fellow had nothing to do.
So poor lady I know and with great hot love she gives you 10.
Is it okay?
After 2 minutes again tea without pakoda second desire pakoda comes there are no chilies chili pakoda in short desires can never be fulfilled and We all get tired of carrying the burden of desires.
It is for this purpose we go to sleep and yet we don't learn.
See then for that we go from temple to temple Babai to Babai do puja and all that you know and only we want our desire to be fulfilled.
My friends, this is one part of our life. If we learn from this, then we come to the other part. Goal of life is freedom from desires as a goal of life.
For that our mahamantra, oh Lord, thy will be done.
See first now these both parts are taken care of by bhagan shankarachara both his other parts you know very easily it's not very difficult you must have studied already that bhagan shankarachara was not an average child he was the avatar of lord Shiva and he was born to his parents because the parents are absolutely pure, immaculate and dedicated to the lord. See there are three purities in our scriptures. I'm taking the other part relative part.
Three purities. One is adhiic purity.
Second is adhic purity and third is purity.
purity means marriages between the uh two whose parents are known authentically.
See the line of the husband is known, line of the wife is known and they are the bodhic purity. See there is no crossbreeding.
Then second purity is adh purity.
Both of them husband and wife they are extremely dedicated in their spiritual life.
The life is pure and that purity is seen in all the walks of their life inside house outside the house.
Adi purity. Third is adhyati purity.
And that purity is one is dedicated only for one purpose and that is this is our last life.
uh qual the purities are contained in a couple then Bhagwan Chankar is born as a child Maharaj these are not accidents so when his mother was praying Lord Shiva in the dream in at night Lord Shiva said I'll come to you as your son and her husband also got the same dream and thereafter Bhagwan Shankara was born. So bhagankara is not a product of the biological union but it is the divine will.
See friends how important it is and therefore at such a young age by the time he was hardly 8 years how many wonders he has presented in this world.
See and thereafter when he went to the naradi and met his guru god padachara and his guru was goindaphachara and his guru was god padachara.
Now here a little turn in our thinking.
Bhagwan Shankarachara had both the types of supports Vidanta because he was directly the descent of Bhagan Shiva and his guru side. He had the shi upasana.
Govinda was doing the upasana of the Lalita and Godara was doing the upasana of Shri Vidya.
So both the adita and the dwita both both are to be clearly understood.
Therefore, if we want to know really what Bhagwancharachara is, he has given equal vitage to both lead your life perfectly beautiful so that you don't regret in your life that is adiphic world, married life and subjective life, vantic life.
Therefore, both types of thoughts you see in his writing.
In one way he says, So he is telling the seekers to keep away from the temptations of life.
And if you go to he describes the beauty of the woman, her body, every part so detailed that you doubt whether is it the same shankarachara who has written this thing. See friends if you see study the vidya how deep things are there.
Therefore these are the two aspect one aspect is leading our life in relative world and second is although you are leading your life in a relative world but the goal of our life is we merge in the absolute ultimately.
Therefore these both types of books are attributed to Bhagan chakra achara the prstanatri commentary then the gita and brahma sutras that is also his contribution and text like the samsar there is one book I am studying that book very extremely uh difficult to understand but it is there.
Uh >> that book is Sri Praja Saratant.
Very few people talk about it. This book somehow I get from nowhere.
And when I was studying this, it is eyeopener.
Normally when we talk about shankarachara only we talk about the commentaries on the Gita, Brahma Sutra and then this is all maximum. But Bhagashankar has written on this tantras. He was a tantric. He knew all and therefore he had all the siddhit he was a yogi and for that we know in his life he has to learn the experience of a married man because that bharati she challenge him that how can you know what is the experience and then he kept his body told his disciple to look after and some king was dead so he entered in his body and he experienced that. Can it be an average thing?
So on one hand he is telling to keep away from the ladies on other hand he has attained that this balance understanding of bhagan chankarachara is the complete understanding.
Therefore the relative world is equally important and absolute is our experience.
So keeping our uh tune with the absolute play the game of relative world.
According to the shastra aasi is not supposed to touch fire nagni but bhagan shankarachara did the agni and karmakandanda of his mother technically speaking it is wrong but bhagan shankarachara was both adeant as well as a tantric and therefore many people have got this funny notion oh tantra is useless. No, it is equally important because that is a part of our life. And therefore these two principles are called as adanta and second is chidillas. The chidillas is expansion of the divine potentiality through the three channels of the itaki and kriaki. Three of them. Now here the question comes we are told get freedom from desires.
Yes desires are the problem. When you have no desires you are happy.
But then how the god created desire. So he desired let me be many and he created. When god has a desire it is okay. But when we have it is bad. What is this? Now here we have to understand the water movement is in the river as well as in the ocean.
Oceanic waters are not steady. So there there are currents water currents. What is the difference?
Rivers have a desire to attain fulfillment.
and they can attain only after reaching the destination the ocean.
So the movement of the water in the rivers is a desire prompted moment and the movement of the waters in the ocean is the expression of fulfillment.
This is the difference between these two expressions of desire. Now we desire because we have a sense of incompleteness.
What a life without a wife and afterwards what a life because of the wife.
Constantly desiring and nothing else.
And therefore we have to recognize this.
God's desire is not to fulfill something but expression of fulfillment.
And this expression of fulfillment is according to the chidillas shastra or the agamra.
There are so many chapters, so many books or we can't put it in one hour talk. We can study that. It's very good.
See there is another very extremely different type of approach.
You know in the life of Bhagwan Sri Krishna towards the end when he wanted to conclude his leela he created all the situation you can imagine if you got one or half child he had 16,18 wives from each wife Bhagar Krishna had 10 sons and one daughter don't have to send to university so you know city comes home see and when he wanted to conclude the leila so he played a trick among them Jamavan was the most handsome boy extremely handsome so he put in his head just to play fool so he put on the clothes etc became pregnant like and went to the great mahatmas and just to playing prank with them.
Maharaj please tell you know our she is feeling very shy whether she is going to get a boy or a girl Mahatma everything they say will be born and that will destroy your whole clan and then to cut the story short this was the cause he was cursed by Bhagan Krishna he will suffer from leprosy and all kinds of diseases.
So he was so frustrated. Then he said now what should I do? How do I get out of it? Upasana.
He said go to Himalayas and do surya opasana.
But he said I can't go with this kind of legs and body. I can't go there. Then okay go to matura and in that particular place do upasana you'll be freed from that and then he did upasana there. See therefore two parts one is thinking learning and growing within.
Second part acting living doing upasana and uh invoking the divine power so that we are helped in our own spiritual practice. These are the two aspects of spiritual life. Therefore this must be done by every one of us.
So coming down to the first part if we have desire it is a bondage.
When God has desire is he not in bondage? No.
Now to get out of it is a small trick.
One child asked me this question.
You tell God loves but if he do wrong he will punish also.
How God punishes?
He only loving. No, his technique of punishment is different. What is that technique? I said, look here. Then I gave him an example. Children, so you have to give example. I said, have you eaten sometime?
He said, how do you know I like diod? I said, don't worry about it.
What is you take a bowl made out of leaf and you put in that a pathetic looking useless vada wet in the waters cold on that they put lot of yogurt and lot of spices and then one spoon and eat. So exactly this is what bhagan does. If you don't believe, open your cranium and see your brain. It looks like a dada.
And on that he puts the spices and spices are intelligence.
And intelligent people are intelligently miserable.
And what is the method of their becoming miserable? Why? Why? Why? Why? Because the sky is too high. The day you stop asking why you have come out of the relative world and entered in the divine field and for that getting out of this why our mantra is there why this is happening God's will meaning you are cool see friends cause and effect is the biggest catch Here most of us are lost.
See there is one text you can read that it is one of the best books attributed to Santa Naneshwar Maharash from Maharashtra and that book I studied that book when I was in a hospital attending somebody.
So one person came he said you are simply sitting here what do we do? I say you tell me what should I do? You read this book. He gave me this book and I never read. If I had to, I study. So I was studying it. And in the study I got a such a terrible shock where it was written knowledge is bondage in Vanta. We have heard see without knowledge liberation cannot be.
And there my god such a great set he's writing knowledge is bondage how it can be and although I studied that but that question was all the time troubling me and then when I was seeing some here and there I came across one book this is how my faith in god has become firm because that question was hitting me inside I happened to go to uh Ganeshpuri near Bombay. There was a great saint.
His name was um Nityanandhabaud time.
All such great masters their life is unlike ours.
You take anybody like you takea tomorrow, you take Bhagan Shankar, you take her life. He was not like ordinary child totally different. So he was also like that. His life was very peculiar.
And when I went to take Dan in his samadi, he was no more by then. One lady came from from somewhere and she said swami I'm listening you now. I don't know what to give you. Anything we give you pass on to somebody. So I give you this book.
And that book was given to me. I just opened it was Shiva Sutra.
This belongs to the Kashmir Shaisam or other word is Chidilas Shastra and I just opened and there was the sutra knowledge is bondage. My question was answered. Then I studied it deeply and then I came to this conclusion. Shankar Achara is not only Gandhi but he was equally a tantric all the tantra shastra there are many tantra shastras on which he has written he doesn't come in the public because very few people follow that there are so many of them and in that I came to this conclusion cause and effect is an illusion see the day you stop cause and effect you have Take a jump out of the miseries of your life. Like what?
In today's world, children are not born.
They are downloaded.
So one downloaded child was quoted by the father. I gave you birth and you behave like this with me.
The child said, "Dad, enough is enough.
Who told you gave me birth?" Now the dad started shaking. Nobody is coming out.
God knows. He said who called you dad before my birth.
Nobody. So I am your father. Because of me you are the son. Father. Now the question is the son is because of the father or the father is because of the son. Conclusion. Mutual dependence is an illusion.
The day you stop this cause and effect you have taken a big leap and for that there are two techniques one is upasana what is upasana what your is okay don't ask question why why why sky is too high your mind is at peace and then to understand this try to learn from Everything see one simple example.
Have we ever asked a question why fire is hot?
We never ask except fire is hot. Then thereafter we decide this is how the fire is. How to deal with it?
And the dealing will be not only protecting ourselves but utilizing the burning ability of the fire to our benefit. This is spiritual practice.
Mind is cool.
But why this is happening to me? Because you deserve to be miserable.
The day you take this principle, we are following the path of upasana and upas the devotey is never never miserable.
Many of us have got that funny notion.
I'm doing so much upasana but nothing is happening to whom? to him or to you.
Remember this when we do God doesn't need us.
It is our need and the impact of that upasana should be on our mind and the impact will be only one.
You go beyond why why why why no why is it like that then in due time you come to discover that was the most essential event in our life because of which we have changed the direction of our life friends therefore helps us in coming out of the catch of cause and surrender whatever is okay. No unwanted crying about it. And by this slowly we develop a faculty wherein we stop reacting in life.
You see most of the times we do not act we react. Reaction is because we are intellectuals.
Intellectuals are intelligently miserable.
Average simple people are happy. Have we ever heard any labor working hand to mouth and with the children and problem gone into depression?
Depression is the disease of the filthy rich useless people because God is taking care.
They are not carrying burden of why why and therefore if we are practicing upasana the net result should be we accept everything as his willasana is going and asking big list and longer the list longer the namaskar do the namaskar watch this I enjoy watching this Then you forgot how many things will you ask?
We being Indians, we teach everybody.
We tell God what should be good for us.
He knows.
See friends, therefore these two paths are brought together by Bhagankarachara.
Don't call him only adi.
See therefore if we want to learn what shankarajara says we should not be one-sided.
Both parts should be equally practiced and the result should be observed by us.
Now Bhagara's commentaries also on yoga sutra.
See in that one or two places I found out something very important very good.
See yoga bas is done only to make the mind available to us whenever we want and that technique is called as syama.
This word is used by Krishna in Bhagat Gita. See there Bhagan says in the second chapter see a loose translation will be self-controlled but that is not a scientific or the technical translation.
Saiyama is mind has three channels where it runs.
Normally what we do we only complain about the mind. Oh my mind is very disturbed. Then what can your mind you find out? No no no what should I do?
Define a disturbed mind.
Try when you say mind is disturb means what?
Like you know the um old people they tell the doctor now what the doctor will know are the symptoms or what you say that the mind is disturbed please define a disturbed mind.
See when you do not know what is the meaning of a dist how can you control that?
See friends worship will beautifully bring this point and it is possible if the earlier five things are done.
Earlier five things are five of them. Yama controlling the mind then controlling the sense organs effortless withdrawal then be always cheerful and happy and pranay and prata five. Thereafter three things the three things are the So this is the inner discipline.
Now be attentive when we say disturb mind means what? Three things. Our mind runs in places we are here. See in India it may be morning or evening and you know my son-in-law must have got there in the Ganes temple and other things that mind runs in space runs in time you know or the mind runs in objects or things are.
So when you say mind is disturbed define disturb mind. The mind is disturbed means mind is influence or running after the time space and object.
So if you have to control the mind means what?
Fix the mind in one place one object for a long period of time.
These three things put together is called that is the meaning of controlled mind.
And for that our mother tells they go but our condition is they go.
See that sadhana gives us the mind which is available to us.
Controlled mind doesn't mean you hold distation.
No controlled mind is that when the mind is no more running after the places, people or anytime this is now to understand Is this is called the tripputy. Triputi means three parts knowledge and known.
Then experience where this division in the knowledge in the form of no known disappears. Only knowledge remains.
That is our essential nature.
See so jagrati mhani ignorant people like us are awakened to this relative world as real and therefore they suffer. Wise people are sleeping to this relative world but they are awakened to their divine nature. Therefore although they live in the same relative world they are not miserable. But when we live in the same world we are miserable. What is the reason? This is the reason.
Therefore, these two aspects upasana should give us confidence. We are taken care of.
Don't react in life. But why this is happening? No question.
Mind is at peace.
See and that peaceful mind alone can have some understanding. And what is the understanding? Understanding is only one and very simple.
No questions.
Just be.
And when initially we are not able to do that then we take the support of the upasana.
See we cannot continue doing practice only.
We have to get established in that also.
So initially we do the practice mind runs here and there. Therefore omni afterwards it becomes so mechanical.
Friends try this. Anything you know by heart your mind is not required.
Anything if you want to really practice only by hearting the mantras or nama is not enough learn something then only the mind is fully available.
Example I ram rasha stotra I know by heart like many of you know so many sastraalies and all that. So when I know it by heart, I do other things also and Ramasha is going on. So what is the impact of that on me?
First chapter, second, third, fourth, sixth, it is against.
See, because anything you do mechanically, there is no charm left.
See friends, spiritual life is not a mechanical drill.
to us all the time. For that upasana is done. See, therefore study and learn that all the problems are because of the disturbed mind and the mind disturbances can be controlled by us if we know the technique and the technique is first don't get lost in why why cause and effect delete it.
This is like this. Now we decide how to do it. You know why we ask questions because we are not we have no urgency.
See one example when suppose imagine I dial the fire brigade.
Hello how are you? Hey man what you want? No I just wanting to know everything is okay at home. your children are you going to school college what's your name by the way he say come on man what you want no my house is on fire if you drop in it will be better will say like this we will hey my house is on fire come we won't even tell the address because urgency is there for us spiritual life is a time pass there's no urgency urgency is 100% involvement and when we are fully involved then other paraphernalia is secondary.
See as a result what happens we develop a personality like that of a flower.
See what is the personality of a flower?
Flower has fragrance.
Flower doesn't go and tell hey I got a fragrance mistake meta isn't it? No.
People go to him to the flower.
Let that divinity surface and the surfacing the divinity is now the divine is expressing through us and expression of the divinity through us is only pure love without expectation.
This is what says see so many times Amma has called me I used to go to their asham also and we used to have many lecture series after series.
So she asked me who is looking after you? I said is looking after me. Okay then I thought see we don't require a certificate from the mahatmas whether they love or don't love us this is our experience whenever a question is answer is required excuse me honey darling tell me really do you love me oh maybe 18 19% Where there is a doubt, it is not a love.
See love has no doubt. If we have love, devotion to the Lord, we have no doubt.
Slowly and steadily this upasana is the means and vanta is the goal.
They are not opposed to each other.
They are supporting each other. But most of the time what happens? I'll conclude now. Most of the time what happens vantis they will be condemning the upasana and upas will be condemning the vanta and this is completely wrong.
Everything is necessary. When we are dealing in the relative world practice upasana when you are all by yourself practice vanta.
So upasala is the manifest spiritual life and vanta is the unmanifest spiritual life.
In upasana we are not a problem for others and we don't take anybody as a problem.
In the vanta we are not a problem for us and we don't make problem to others.
These two things put together is the perfect balance which is demonstrated in the life of Bhagan Shankarachara.
Therefore friends let us remove that notion from our mind that Bhagwan Shankar were only Vanti. No he was the tantric his guru and grand guru both were the upasakas.
Even the shankarajara who establish there there is a the vidya yantra he established and now also it is being woripped.
Therefore these two aspects of his life must be taken into account if we want to follow bhaganar achara. Let us give it a try and be happy ultimately.
O shant shant shanti hom hom.
