Massive concrete pipes, each 4 m wide, snaked across the desert. The network could move 6 million cubic meters of water daily. Gaddafi called it the eighth wonder of the world. The plan was simple, turn Libya into an agricultural powerhouse by tapping water reserves beneath the sand. But there was a problem. This wasn't renewable water.
