This video review of X-Cross (2007) demonstrates how non-linear narrative structures and distinctive villain designs can create compelling horror films, but the effectiveness depends on consistent threat levels and satisfying character resolutions. The reviewer explains that the film uses alternating perspectives between characters to create twists, but notes that without a sufficiently threatening antagonist, the horror elements become ineffective. The scissor lady character serves as the primary threat, but the reviewer criticizes the lack of gore, the weak threat posed by villagers, and the unsatisfying resolution where the main antagonist escapes without proper comeuppance.

And this is for X Cross from 2007.
X Cross.
Which I don't know why when I saw the title, I thought it was about the X Games or something like extreme ops, like something about skateboarding or snowboarding.
I probably snowboarder, I thought but it's like a snowboarding slasher film or something. I don't but no, it's It's an A- It's an Asian film from the director did Battle Royale 2.
And it's a film that I guess it's okay.
I looked at reviews before I did this and they kind of made it seem crazier than it really is.
I mean, there's a crazy character.
Which without that character, the film itself would be rather tame and forgettable.
So, I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of this film.
It tries to have some interesting twists with the way they handle the story.
But also It starts out with this lady is at this place, gets a phone call and someone warns on the phone, "Get out of there.
They're going to chop your legs off."
She freaks out.
And let's just go back and forth in time. Let's just go back and forth with narratives. You have these two characters and throughout the narrative, we'll be with one character and then some events will happen.
And then they'll like rewind to what this other character was doing at the same point at the same time and see their story.
And then when it goes a bit that it kind of rewinds a little bit to see where this person's at and then where this person's at.
They go back and forth with that.
And then you think there's when they say something here, you think it's pertaining to one thing.
Then you find out there's actually something else going on.
So it tries to have a little bit of twist with that.
Which made it semi-interesting.
And then there's one one of the antagonists makes it really I would say it's probably the only unique thing about this. What So it's about these two ladies, female you know, buddies.
Aoki or AITL Aiko?
Aiko?
I'm not sure how to pronounce her name.
Cuz I'm bad with names and Shiori.
Aiko and Shiori.
They are going to this hot springs in this village in the middle of nowhere.
Shiori is dealing with a breakup of her boyfriend.
Aiko you kind of get a vibe of history that she's been with a lot of men.
They almost hit this lady.
And this lady is wearing like an eye patch, she's got an umbrella.
And she's dressed like a goth girl and she keeps going step step step.
Step step step.
Step step step. This is the girl I was talking about being the character, there's like the one interesting thing about it.
So, as it goes on, they're led to the village. They They beat a couple villagers. They enjoy the hot springs.
And while Shiori leaves, Aoki gets on her phone, like snazzy flip phone, and says, "She's here, exactly as planned."
So, you're supposed to have doubts about who who this person is, their motivation, etc. You cut to Shiori back at her lodge, and she gets a phone call from someone.
Well, she hears a phone, she finds the phone, and this guy is thinks he's talking to his sister.
"Wait, why you have my sister's phone?"
And then he's Mr. Exposition Guy.
This guy who's a teacher, and he that's position is that village sacrifices women to the gods to ward off catastrophes.
And he warns her and warns her that gets back to the beginning of the film where the guy's on the phone warning her about they'll chop your legs off.
She runs off, the villagers chase her for a little bit.
Now, here I'm thinking it's going to be it's an Asian horror action film, it's going to be a lot of battles with the villagers, lot of close calls with the villagers.
And you know, it's going to be a bit of a bloody film, it's going to be a bit of a gory film, it's going to be a bit of a crazy action film, and you find out that maybe these ladies have more to them than you think, or they No, there's really not much gore, it's not a whole lot of blood.
It's not a whole lot of like the villagers themselves kind of Well, they don't disappear, but they don't feel much of a threat.
Because it's not a big body count film in terms of like various victims that they get.
At one point they capture Shiori, but then she just kind of kicks him a bed and she's able to escape again.
So, you never really feel them as a valued threat.
And They did warn the spoilers starting now.
Heavy spoilers.
Once she's captured, it goes to Ayako and her deal.
She gets to his bathroom and that person from the row with the eye patch comes in, but only now they're in more like a schoolgirl outfit and she's got these big scissors.
And you find out how she is someone who Ayako had stolen her boyfriend from her.
That she's pissed off and she wants revenge. And then you do a bit of a bathroom battle.
Where Ayako's blocking with a bathroom door while she stab him with scissors.
And then throughout the film she'll get seemingly killed and then later on comes back.
Which I sort of scissors that get bigger and bigger to a point that it'll almost like she's the villain in that game Clock Tower.
And I've seen people talk about how it's like if you take a PS2 horror game and made into a movie.
A little bit of Resident Evil 4 I guess with the village. A little bit of Clock Tower.
I'm like, yeah, but that makes it seem like I just they do it because all you have the two characters like Resident Evil 2 and you do they go back sometimes they go back and forth.
That makes the movie sound a lot more interesting than it is.
Again, when it's with this character who's the bigger and bigger scissors, it's interesting.
Later on, there's another battle they have where Aiko hid in a porta-potty and then the I I I forget her name, eye patch lady, scissor lady, see Miss Scissorhands. Scissor lady attacks her and then when it flips the porta-potty over, Aiko gets pissed and she gets a chainsaw and she fights her she has a chainsaw, scissor lady's got bigger scissors, they're going back and forth.
Gets the chainsaw away.
Earlier in the bathroom got away cuz she put some stuff on the scissor lady's face and burned up her face. This time does it and she the scissor lady blocks with an umbrella. Oh, you going to do the same trick?
I never do the same trick.
And you find out it's actually something for like flammable and gets the lighter and throws it with a bit of style which goes and then something explodes.
I don't even know what exploded and then the person is on fire.
And then Aiko does like this kick to kick the scissor lady down.
But you do see the scissor lady back in the third act.
I'm like, yeah, this is like the only thing. The stuff with the villagers are really lame.
It's a It's a It's not that violent, it's not that gory, it's not that again exciting.
Cuz when it goes back to like just say when it goes back to Shiori, she easily escapes from the villagers. She runs off. She finds this area, someone in a car. It's her boyfriend.
He's all I came up here to see if you were okay and then it's hey, I'm here to rescue you and the reason this all happened is cuz Aoki Aiko whatever her whatever the [ย __ย ] her name is.
The girl you saw me kissing was her and she instigated the whole thing.
And then she does a phone call with that guy that you find out he's like a teacher.
So I found out that the guy whom I sister was brought up there with as her boyfriend.
Oh, her boyfriend is in the cult. Her boyfriend's from that village.
Now, I don't know why he allowed this girl to take the phone call and all that, but it just didn't matter cuz he quickly knocks her out, ties her up in like a cross, like crucifixion thing, ready to chop her legs off.
Aiko Aiko Aiko whatever the [ย __ย ] Aiko Aiko Aiko Aiko Aiko Aiko She comes in and stops the villagers with flashing from her camera.
I don't know how much of a [ย __ย ] threat is this village if flash from a cell phone camera can stop them.
Then they must not be much of a [ย __ย ] threat. You know what I mean?
You know what I mean? You know? You know? You know what I mean?
It's not much of a [ย __ย ] threat then, is it?
The teacher the the guy on the phone the teacher arrives in the van.
Eiko gets her friend down from the being you tied up and the scissor lady comes in she's all burnt up.
She has these giant scissors and she starts killing the villagers cuz they're in her way to get this girl.
Now that's really one of the only times you see blood. It's not really anything that gory. It just kind of she hits and you see a blood splatter. She does this you see a little bit of blood splatter.
You have these giant scissors.
How do you not capitalize on cutting the head off and goes up like a Pez dispenser?
Cutting arms off, cutting legs off.
Snip snip.
How do you not I mean especially if a guy directed To be fair I only saw the first Battle Royale which I liked. I never saw the sequel. I just to be fair I've heard the sequel wasn't as good so maybe that's why.
But you have these giant scissors you do nothing with it in terms of the two girls they They don't they hit a couple villagers.
They help each other like Shiori hits the scissor lady to help Eiko up and Eiko hits the the evil boyfriend that gets Shiori out of there. They're in the back of the van. They've driven off.
The boyfriend tries to climb up. They kick him off.
But he doesn't even get a big comeuppance. He doesn't get get a big death scene.
Explodes, cut his head off, anything.
Should have been maybe the scissor lady versus the evil boyfriend and they fight back and forth and one maybe or maybe Shiori just the big scissors and cuts the evil boyfriend's head off.
Or something, anything. So again, the evil boyfriend, he's still out there.
He knows who this person is.
Won't he just search for you? I guess you don't have to move.
Cuz he knows where you live.
Both of you live.
So again, your evil boyfriend, one of the main antagonist, doesn't get a come up at all. He just just tipped off the back of a truck.
That top of that, they're riding with these fine, but then the scissor lady's on top of the van and it cuts away for a [ย __ย ] sequel bait ending.
Really?
So yeah, I I go back what I said. I'm not going to say this is okay. I'm not a fan of the film. I'm sorry.
Child of Peach, which was actually punches last request, I did like. This one not so much.
The reason I wanted to say okay is that the way the narrative is done was as confused as I thought it would be.
We see a little bit of this person's point of view.
And there's certain things like Aiko saw or Shiori Shiori saw this bathroom was all messed up and she's wondering how it was messed up.
So when it goes and rewinds time to Aiko's point of view, we see her get to the bathroom is all prim and proper or as proper as it can be. So now we see how it became that bathroom that Shiori had been to.
Like certain moments of that was kind of neat. I kind of wish they did even more with that.
But again, the villagers just don't come off as intimidating or scary.
There's not much in kills or gore.
There's not much in terms of The only bits of action is really when the scissor lady's there fighting you know Part of it's like can't the whole movie just be about this one woman stuck in this village and then the scissor lady and then have it to survive both.
As time goes on she gets stronger fighting the villagers and then stronger fighting the villagers then she confronts the scissor lady is able to kick her ass.
Or maybe you beats up the whether it's a evil boyfriend or whoever the [ย __ย ] else beats the [ย __ย ] out of him but then maybe the scissor lady kills him and then the scissor lady goes after the lead and lead is able to kick her ass finally because of all the stuff she's learned throughout this experience of dealing with these [ย __ย ] villagers.
Something like that would have been more preferred.
>> [snorts] >> I don't mind the two ladies who are the leads. I thought they did fine.
The guy on the phone talking, I thought he did fine. I kind of like the moment where they thank him and then one of them starts flirting and the guy turns Oh come I'm I'm single.
And they kind of look at him and then they kind of giggle.
I was sort of about that was I don't know. I guess just to humor to deflate the hopeful tension in the scene. I don't know. Just Something about I guess I I I didn't mind the way it was performed acting wise from the three in the van.
So it's like the scene I didn't mind. I thought it was cute. That was a cute bit of a scene.
But it just not much for payoff, not much for comeuppance on your villains.
For a lot compared to a lot of Hong Kong movies or not just Hong Kong cuz there's Taiwanese movies and Japanese movies and Hong Kong Asian movies. For a lot of Asian movies, especially ones that seem to be more porky crazy.
It wasn't as duck case of an ending as I thought it should have been.
And to repeat, if you took out the scissor lady, this would be a rather chore to sit through.
I think that's my main problem.
And a sequel bait ending, [ย __ย ] really?
So it just disappointing.
Just not as good as it should have been.
That's just me though.
Oh well.
With that said, thanks for watching.
Take care and I just would like to see a lot more insanity, bloodshed, kicking ass type of thing, but that's not the case here. So we'll see you guys later.
Bye-bye for now.
