The Star Wars Black Series May the 4th Security Battle Droid features a distinctive dark red paint scheme representing its appearance in The Phantom Menace, along with silver accents and a light dark wash on the legs; however, the figure has some paint application issues including missing red paint on the shoulders and back of the head, and while it lacks the backpack for accuracy, this affects its balance and display appearance.

This Figure Was ALMOST Great! May The 4th Security Battle DroidAdded:
Hey guys, welcome back to the channel.
I'm Luceness Monster. Today we're going to be reviewing the Star Wars the Black Series May the Fourth Be With You B1 Battle Droid. This is a very interesting figure and it's not something that you see too often, but for May the 4th, Hasbro decided to release several figures wearing t-shirts and the one that we have today is the B1 battle droid wearing this Roger Roger t-shirt.
So, like I said, very interesting concept and we'll get into that more in the video. Uh, first up, looking at the packaging though, I actually really, really like this packaging style. Of course, we do have the May 4th logo here, which actually looks great on this package. And it's definitely got that black and yellow color scheme, which just screams Star Wars. And then it does have these white speckles all over the box, kind of like there are stars. And I just like this a lot. Honestly, if uh Hasbro wanted to do like a uniform box for the Black Series, the black box with the white stars and the yellow color scheme would be a great like alternate box to switch to longterm if they didn't want to switch colors between like mural artworks. On the top of the box, we have that same May 4th logo. On the side, no mural artwork, but we do have the May 4th logo there as well. Then flipping around to the back, we do have the bio, which you can pause and read, and a nice image of the battle droid here with the uh target practice card, which we will obviously get into a little bit. As far as the number on the box, they actually put 05.04, which is of course May the 4th. That's super cool. And it is a fun little detail that they didn't need to include, but I do really like it. And then I also do really like the Roger Roger here, too. I think that's fun. But yeah, other than this, there's not a whole lot else going on with the box.
So, let's crack this guy open and see what he looks like. So, I got the brand new battle droid out of the box, and I got to say, this is definitely an interesting figure. We are going to be talking about the t-shirt first, cuz I believe that's like the most eye-catching part of this figure. He does have this Roger Roger Robotics logo on the front of the shirt. And I actually really like this logo. If they sold this as like unironic merch, I'd probably buy it as long as it's not on that bright yellow shirt. I think the bright yellow doesn't look good, but if it was on like a black or a white or just a normal neutral tone shirt, it would probably look pretty good. And then, of course, the May fourth logo on the back also looks pretty great. It's an interesting idea. I think this one works a little bit better with some of the other figures that have like normal human proportions, but the battle droid doesn't, and he just looks a little weird in this super like baggy, big bulky t-shirt compared to somebody like a like a stormtrooper or a scout trooper that they already did in this line. And so with that being said, we are going to take off the t-shirt just because I don't care for the t-shirt. I'm not going to use it on this figure and I wouldn't put it on the shelf with the t-shirt on. So yeah, we're going to take that off. But here we have the t-shirt off and this is the big selling point for this figure is the fact that underneath he's got the dark red paint to basically represent the security battle droid. We've been asking for B1 battle droid repaints from the movies for quite some time and they've keep putting out some like odd repaints. We got the Republic Commando one. We got some training droid ones, some Jedi survivor ones. And yet, we never got any like prequel movie repaints until now.
So, this is a big step in the right direction for the Black Series. But nevertheless, this figure does have some flaws. Looking at the paint here, I do think that the red paint detail looks great, and it's one of the most recognizable battle droids from the Phantom Menace. So, I do like this paint scheme, and I hope that we get the blue pilot and the yellow commander to go with it. I also really like the silver accents they put on this guy. He's got some silver right here kind of like at his ab area. And then he also does have some silver very subtly on his like bicep area. So digging the silver paint details. And then this figure, you can especially tell by looking at like the legs. Has a very light dark wash. It's nothing super strong. And the weathering that we got on some of the previous battle droids is much better, but it is much better than the weathering that we got with the battle droid that came with the clone trooper two pack because that one had no paint on it whatsoever. The red paint does look good, but we are missing some red paint details, which is a big bummer. The red is supposed to extend all the way onto the shoulders and pretty much go down here. And so, so both of the shoulders are missing a large amount of red paint, which is just like a real real hit on this figure. And then even the back of the head, pretty much this whole back section here should be a dark red. So, they are definitely skipping out on some of those red paint hits, which make this a little bit less desirable than it should be. I'm hoping that they go back and put this one out in a different set that has the accurate paint job just because it's a real bummer to get such a long- aaited repaint and it just be inaccurate.
Looking at the back of the figure, he doesn't have a battle droid backpack, which is definitely interesting cuz I believe this is the first ever battle droid in the line to not come with the backpack. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but uh he just looks a little awkward without that backpack. And now this is accurate. I will say in the movies, the security battle droids don't ever have the backpack. So, and so I'm not disappointed that they didn't include it because I think this is accurate and I'm all for accuracy, but I can say it doesn't look just a little strange.
Interestingly enough, most battle droids come with this extra accessory piece and I never know what to do with it because like we just don't ever need it because all the battle droids come with backpacks. But this accessory piece actually goes into the clip of the back of the shoulder here and it's like a little antenna for the battle droids that don't have the backpacks. We mainly see this in the prequels with like the commanders with like the yellow paint hits. And so I do think this adds a little bit to this battle droid which I like. And it doesn't have that full backpack. But believe it or not, the security battle droids never have this.
So this is inaccurate if you wanted to pose it like this. But at this point, I've got so many of these like extra little antenna things lying around from every other battle droid release that I've gotten that it just makes sense to use them on this because I can't use them on the other ones cuz they have the backpack. So it really is up to you. And I'm just kind of surprised that the battle droid didn't come with this accessory to begin with, especially because he doesn't have the backpack.
Jumping into articulation, he does have a ball joint at the top of the head here where the neck meets the head. And then there is a little bit of articulation here at the back uh piece here. I'm not quite sure what these are, but they do have articulation. The whole neck here can actually pop up and twist. So, good articulation there. And then there is, of course, that up and down. For the shoulders, we can't quite get up into a tea pose, but you get decently close.
And then the arms do go all the way around. For the elbows here, a little bit past 90°.
We also do have a bicep swivel, if you want to call that a bicep. And then we've got swivels and horizontal hinges at both of the wrists. We do have a ball joint like at the ab area here, but it's definitely tight, especially with these pieces on the side kind of hindering that articulation. For the legs, we got ball joints at the hips, but very little range of motion.
You can get into like a killer sideways split, though. I do have to give props where props is due. Hasbro significantly made these joints tighter at the legs.
And that's the main problem with the balance is that it's just so hard to balance these battle droids up. It makes most of these battle droids pretty useless. And so, tightening up the hips make it a whole lot easier to pose, which is just great for a figure like this that's so skinny in proportion. Of course, the knee gets great articulation. And then we have standard pivots and rockers. And especially talking about balance there, I always have trouble balancing battle droids.
And this one straight out of the box is one that I've never had problem balancing. Like I can let it sit there.
I can kind of just drop it on the table and it stands great, which is something that I can't say for basically every other battle droid that I own. So I'm definitely digging this one. And they did improve it for balance. And maybe that's because he doesn't have that backpack in the back to weigh him backwards. So maybe the losing the backpack really helps the balance of this figure. First up for comparisons, we have some of the other battle droids in the line. We have the standard Phantom Menace battle droid on the left and we have the Geonosian battle droid from episode 2 on the right. If you're trying to start a Separatist army, these three figures I think are essential for that. And these are looking quite stellar. I will say though, as far as the weathering and the paint apps, the one in the middle here, the security battle droid is definitely lacking compared to these other two. The other two have some nice like carbon scoring.
They've got these metal paint hits to show like paint scratching. And you can tell that in more recent years, Hasbro's been going a lot lighter on the battle droid paint. And comparing it to these two, it's night and day. Regardless though, they all three look great together, especially if you're displaying them on the shelf. Of course, we've got some other Phantom characters that we see the security battle droid interact with. So, we've got the deluxe droidica on the right, which is such an amazing figure, as well as Queen Padme Amadala on the left. I'm really happy with this lineup and this is one of those Phantomist paint styles that I think is going to look great on the shelf with the rest of your Phantom figures. And it's just nice to get more figures to put next to that droidica more scene specific to episode 1. Of course, talking about episode 1, we see Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan mow down a bunch of the security battle droids in the opening scene of Phantom Menace. So, I had to compare them here. And honestly, they're looking great. These are two figures that would look amazing next to the security battle droid. Next up, we've got some more prequel battle droids from the Separatists with the Super Battle Droid on the right and the Revenge of the Sith Magna Guard on the left. The Separatist army has come so far in the last 3 years, and I think the security battle droid is a great addition to that. And then last but not least, we do see the security battle droid in the Clone Wars. So, here are some Clone Wars battle droids with the training droid on the left and the commando droid on the right. Genuinely, all are looking amazing. So yeah, overall I will admit it has its flaws, but I still really like the idea of this character being in the line. I'm hoping that they'll do a new version in the future that has accurate paint hits, but other than that, it's a long-awaited character that we have desperately needed in the line for quite some time.
So, I'm glad that we're finally getting it, even if it means we have to remove the t-shirt to get it. As far as the May 4th gimmick goes, it's interesting. I can't say that I care too much about it, but if you're a fan of it, that's great.
Again, I think the t-shirt's a little wacky on a figure like this, which is a little skinnier, but as far as the like target goes, I think that's pretty cool.
Obviously, it's fun that like all the blaster bolts are only hitting the lightsaber rather than the target. So, fun little gimmick to include in this.
So, yeah, it's not perfect, but I am happy that we're finally getting some security battle droid representation in the line. So, let me know what you guys think. Is this one that you're going to pick up or are you going to pass and hope for a more accurate version down the line? Let me know down in the comments below. Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you guys in the next one.
