The clavicle (collar bone) is a unique long bone with several distinctive features: it is the only long bone that lies horizontally, is subcutaneous throughout, and is the first bone to begin ossifying; it is the only long bone that ossifies through membrane (intramembranous) rather than endochondral ossification, lacks a medullary cavity, and is the only long bone with two primary centers of ossification; additionally, it is occasionally pierced by the middle supraclavicular nerve.
