This video demonstrates the complete process of basing out a scaffold return, including measuring and setting up legs and ledgers, installing clips at correct measurements (35 inches between ledgers), using temporary legs to ensure levelness, and installing braces with swivels to create a stable, level scaffold structure.

Scaffold Basing Out Basics (Step by Step Guide)Ajouté :
Right then, we're back. Episode two of teaching Ty how to do basic scaffolds.
We're going to run an Lshaping here.
We're going to work all the boards out.
We're going to just do Yeah, just just the tube work for now. And he's going to learn how to do the return. So, he's keen, loving it. So, it's going to be how we scaffold on site. So, we're going to go away from the college bit for a little bit and teach him some more practical stuff. Um, yes. So, it's just going to be a single lift around here.
It's going to be 13 foot that way and then it's a 3 m return there. So, he's going to work all his short balls and everything out, work his legs out, get the measurements to the right distance off the wall. You think you can smash it? He's got the basics. He's definitely knows straightforward 13T towers, 20ft towers, but anything with a return in. I haven't shown him anything yet. So, let's smash it. Let's get some kit out and we'll get going.
So, we're not going to do it as if we're actually going to put handrails and boards on. We're literally just going to run the tube work around. So, we're going to put shorter legs in, but obviously if he was on site, you put the longer stuff through to get your handrail and make sure you're not smashing your knees on the uh tubes. So, first thing he needs to work out is what tubes he needs to make sure he can get his return in. Otherwise, he won't have enough on his return to to run this through. So, it's 1 and 12 m extra tie.
So obviously this is just a small turn.
We're going to do 13 footboards. So that'll be 13 4 m plus 1 and 1/2. You can use 16s 13 5 m. Four, five. You'll be a little bit short. So you use some little bats on the on here. But yeah, it looks tidier if you use them. And then you'll base that out as a straight and then run this in. So we'll get the basics out and then we'll show you how I'm thinking and what Tyler's got to think about on site to make sure he's not got 50,000 sets of short boards on.
Right. So Ty's just asking about the return. Now you get the measurements right? So yeah, you base this out, stick this through about 1 and 1/2 m. So for your return, 2 mish. You put a temp leg here to hold that ledger level, the internal one. Then you either under sling will go on top to there. Then you just base that out like your normal base. You come here. So you get that leg leg in, get it in, measure off the container here, the same measurement, and move that to there. Then you come back here on your clip. You just do that up wherever the measurement is. Run your setup in, get your other leg in, come over here, measure your 35 between ledger to ledger, and then get them two clips on. Then you can do your corner legs and fill in the middleles. So it's all simple enough. It's just it's just making sure you get that measurement right. So you'll go 22 there or whatever it is. Measure that. Get your butt on.
Set it all up like normal. You measure then. So your leg will be in your ledger will be in. You measure from here. Say wherever you are to your ledger to center. And then you come over here. You measure this to center your ledger. And then you know that's straight. You put your clip on. Then you can go get that leg all leveled up and done nice. And obviously your return will hold that side straight cuz you've already got two setups there. You'll have a setup there and then you'll measure that. Measure this outside ledger in. Easy peasy.
Right. So we've got a basic bit of kit out. We've got they're going to be our legs and eights. Sevens as braces, fives hit the wall. Got all our fittings out.
We got two swivels every other pad. And we've got a double to every pad. We just need a few clips which we got a bucket full here. We won't cap it only because it's just a container so it's not that much of an issue. We got all this return ready. And then we're doing one inside board. So Ty's just getting that set up.
So, we're measuring our bat from the end here, one foot, and then that's one inside board with a little gap. So, I will just double check that on the container, make sure we can still get our boards in. But, yeah, that's the basics. One foot we've got on the setup bus. So, he's making three of them up.
He's got two there. And then he's going to set that last one up. And they'll be our measurement off the container. We'll try and set one up and uh show you that as we go. Right. So, the first thing we're going to do is we're going to get our pads in the right place for the base. So, what you do for that, you put your butt up against whatever your button against and you line your pad up down through there and put your plate in the middle like that. So, now you know that leg's in the right place. Ty will get his side ready and then uh we'll whip this bit in. So, yeah, you get that in, get your ledger through, set up but on race up to the wall and then that's your first part of your base. Level your ledger in and then leave it at that and we'll come back to you when we've got that ready. This bloke just asked him what does he think of the work wear? He goes, "Can't we get the muscle fit ones?
muscle fit workware for scaffolding.
>> That's not bad.
>> Who Who is this bloke? Well into the gym. He's a scaffolder now. Grow up.
Right, we're just going to get this uh 16T through. So, first thing we're going to do is get our legs on our pads at the right place, which we already set. Get our double. Ty's way ahead. He hasn't put his double in the gate, though, but we'll let him off. Go roughly the same height. Nip him up like that.
And then get that ready there. Yeah. You ready? Then we lift our 16 straight in.
Like so. Get our legs roughly level.
Roughly level there.
Nip him up. Then we get our setup back.
Measured at a foot. I don't know which way. This way. Make sure he faces the right way. Done that before. Done it wrong. Get him on like that.
And then what you want to do is kick him in.
So you're level and you get your now like that.
Tie's knocking all my side out.
Right. So now you're here. Show you what we've done. So ledge has gone in. We've got our measurement off the wall to here. So that's one board that we can fit in there. And that's all level. And then this way I don't worry about as much, but I get it somewhere there. Now, what Taiy's gonna do is he's going to get a full setup in. He's going to go up here with a clip, hit the wall, come out, and then he'll measure off his five here to here. 35 in. And that's to the edge of the clip. So, Ty will get that in in a second. And then I'm going to show a different way. I watched Shark Scaffolding. I know he watches the videos. I watched him do it. So, he puts a five in down here, runs it through, and then measures the leg to the right measurement here. So yeah, he'll put a five in on a double lower and then level over after. So we're going to show both ways just so it's got a bit difference, but Ty's uh getting his in yet. He's doing well.
>> Once you've done that, you don't want to be tipping this around left, right there, >> not loads. Just get it roughly level.
>> And obviously that butt should be hitting the high part cuz I've gone off the high part. But for this it doesn't matter too much. So, what we're going to do now is obviously we've run both setups in. We haven't checked the height of this yet. So, I'm going to put my level on it.
And that doesn't happen often. But that is that is like smack on.
>> That happened to me twice yesterday.
>> That is That is smack on. I will show you.
>> It must be me cuz that happened to me twice yesterday.
>> That must be you. Yeah. Right.
>> That must be me.
>> That is like bob on. But what you should do is that one side will be out. So you'll undo that and drop it down or lift it up. Or if you're happy with the height of that one for your building, whatever you're doing, then you'd undo this side and drop this up or down. But yeah, it's bob on. So we won't have to worry about that one. Ty scaff is overtake. He's been on the scaffolders eye leveling course, ain't you? He's an expert already. Right. So Ty's going to get his uh set up in here now. As you can see, this is the bit he struggles with. Now I have to get this bit on camera if you don't.
>> This is the bit. This is the bit he struggles with. That looks nice and square.
Another little trick I would do, see this clip's all rusty and old.
>> I'd always pick out four setups a good a good clip for it cuz that might not be tightening up. But yeah, look down here.
And he's not very square. You see?
>> Just just um so ideally what you do, you get get this like that. Stand here. Get it roughly. Leave a tiny gap there.
Yeah. And then Yeah. That clips.
Absolutely shocking.
That one's not much better. J's kit. I always do normally set up from that side cuz I like the cut from the inside, but I'll let you carry on as you are. So, yeah. Stand, get it in like that, hit the wall, and then make sure he's square. Like, just look down it and check he's square.
And then don't do that crazy tight and then you know the rest, don't you? You got chalk. Need some chalk. So, yeah, as you can see, Ty's got that in now. So, what he's going to do, he's going to measure off this ledger from here back 35 in. And then you draw a mark. He'll show you in a minute. And then he'll put his clip on there to the edge of the mark. So the edge of the clip will be here. And that will be where the the tube will go in. And then he'll level all that in then. And then what we do, I'll do the other version of a setup here. And then you can let me know in the comments which one you think's better. We'll set that up in the other way. We'll fill all our middle legs in, run our outside ledger through. Then we'll check that and see if it's long enough, which I think is going to be some butts in the end. And then we can run our return straight through, which we're just going a 30ft tube back to make it simple for this one. But yeah, in future it'll be I know that'll be like 40 foot, 60 foot, whatever. And that'll be saying 40 foot, 60 foot. But the basics of a return, he'll he'll understand the gist of it when you when you big man. Blue chalk, pink belt, blue chalk.
>> No chalk.
>> Cap on.
>> Nose ring.
Nose ring in.
>> Nose ring applied.
>> Right. So Ty's going to get his measurement in now. I'll go over here. I always put in my mouth. Mouth talk. My mouth goes blue. Is that level?
>> Pretty close.
Huh? Why are my teeth yellow? Right.
Ty's going to come this side and he's going to measure where his clip's going to go. So, yeah. Always make sure you're measuring off the tube for this with his sticky magnet that he loves. It >> doesn't work.
>> And then he's going to go all the way down to 35. Show him, Ty.
>> 35. Yeah. Now, he's going to get his clip. Right. So, another thing to be bearing in mind now. So, he's going to get his clip up there. Then, what he's going to do Yeah. That's it. Bang on.
So, the clip's right on the mark. And then he's going to get his pad in place before he goes and gets his tube maybe.
So what you should be doing >> is you measure from here back 39 to center of that pad. You get him all in place. Nice. Otherwise he's got a 21 there now and he's trying to scramble down by his feet trying to get his pad and plate ready. But lucky he's got an 8ft tube so we can do it.
>> Lucky I'm going lucky I'm going off two weeks in two weeks.
>> Two weeks. So he's roughed it in. But not how I would do it. That's me. Ty's tie. Ty gas.
>> Ty gas.
>> Ty gas on Tik Tok. Hit like. Subscribe to the channel.
>> So Ty's gonna hold that now on his mark.
Go to the right of it. Ty. You can nip that up if you want to to make it easier for yourself. But then he's going to level that to where that mark is. Like so. This is completely different to our college teacher. They'd have you do a kicker. And now he's leveling his ledger up, his [ __ ] Ledger. I'm confusing everyone now. So that's coming down to where he wants it or a bit too far.
Sometimes besides I find so >> twist and it this this this that does take a lot of getting used to cuz the clips do twist and stuff. It's quite a >> Right. Then he's going to put his double on and then I'm going to show you the other way of setting up and run you through that quickly as a as an alternative. Some firms do it one way, some do it another. And if you if your scaffold starts rocking like it is now, you undo the back of this and push it in till he touches and do it back up. It should stop it. So Ty's got that one in. That's the one way of doing it. Right. So this is the way.
You ain't got no mic again. Right. So, the way Shark does it, if I can do it.
>> I've never done it. I do like Shark.
He's good. So, he does it completely different to how I do it anyway. He puts his double in there. Puts that ride up to the tub container. I'll check his square.
We'll do that. Then he'll measure off that leg. Whatever his measurement is, but I go 39 to center. So, that's center of my double. And then if I go there and there, I know that is where my double wants to be. And that's either side of the tube. Now I'll do it the proper way.
Measure here, get my pad in where I want it, which is center 39 plate on. Now I'll go and get my 21, but it won't be a 21. It' be an eight. He puts that in. I do think this would be easier for higher lifts. Be a lot easier. So cuz we got three marks. See how that See how that middle mark's disappeared now. See that? You can't see that mark anymore. But because I put the extra two marks in, I can see and line my tube up like that. And now I'll just gently do that up.
And then I can level this this way and this way. Tyler's trying to catch me out, but this doesn't happen. Level that roughly.
Right. So now we've got a leg in. So this is what I see them do. I don't know. Just one extra step, but might be easier. So you get this roughly the same height as that.
Like that. And then you'd level over after. I'll get the 16 in cuz Ty knows all these bits. Then you Ty.
Saying that he doesn't know this way.
He's never done it before.
>> I don't remember this. You haven't.
>> You haven't quite shown me how to do this yet. Right. So you got that in there. Now I'll lift Tai side up first.
Old Tai SC like that. And then the extra bit. Oh, this probably would be easier if it was a high lift, wouldn't it?
>> Yeah, >> cuz that's put that in there.
Put your level on and then level it down to there. And then I presume you should do the front up. Should square. If I'm doing it wrong, Sharky, let me know.
Sharky will let me know, wouldn't he?
And then ties check to square.
Just kick my leg out a bit.
Right then. So now we've got all of that in. We've got one way of setting up. We got another. We'll fill our two middle legs in. And then all we run turning now. We'll get two clips on that five.
So now if you do come here should be the same measurement.
So press that up against the wall like that. And then this should be inside the center 35. What do you reckon that jockey?
>> What do you think we've mastered uh his way?
So the only other thing so I always leave it like that now base it out and then I'll come back in and fill my braces in after. Otherwise if you start taking braces off now it'll start wiggling and moving everywhere. So that's actually that was actually reasonably easy. I I don't know why I've always stuck in my ways but so yeah this will turn obviously it's a 13 ft return.
So we know 13T boards are going to fit in there perfectly. So it's got to go underneath. We was just talking about this earlier. So the reason it goes underneath the tube will come under here and these will act as your [ __ ] Yeah. So if you go on top you can't then lap the fing for boards over to here.
Does that make sense? Otherwise, the [ __ ] will be wrong. You need boards to come from this way back. So, this needs to go underneath here. So, the way I get that I'll get the start of it.
I'll get you two setup clips. This is the way I've always done it. I'll put that like that. Get this roughly where I want it. Put that up there, which it wants to go in more because we're set up at a foot. And then I'll just gently do this up.
And I should have put a temp leg in first, but I'll do that now. Right. So this temp leg, this ledge is running through now and we're going to put weight on it. So the more weight we put on it, it's going to bend down. Yeah. So what you do, put a leg like that. Put your clip in, level on there, and then go up a tiny bit.
So now you know that's going to stay level. So when you level that, that's going to keep all your scaffold bang on.
This is just a temporary leg. So yeah, just whack it in. It's done. You could put it on a dabble, but I've always put them on clips. So when you unders that through now you know that this is running through nice and level. When you level that in that's running level off this. So when you go around a full house if you didn't level that there'd be a step. So you can run the whole house around now nice and level knowing everything's perfect. So we're going to get another setup in over there and then I'll show you how you get this in the right place on the job. Right. So what what's going to happen now is this ledge is rough in. It's nothing no measurements yet. Ty's going to get his leg and set up but same as we just did here. Same thing. We're going to get all that in. Lift it up. level the ledger, get the brace in, and then we're going to get the measurements right for this ledger returning through. So, TY's just going to bang that in, and then we'll come back to you. Right. So, now we've got that through, and we know we've got our measurement off the wall there on that bat. We've got everything in right, we got to level that ledger, Ty, we got to level this through, which is the bang on again.
>> Yeah, it's out a bit now. Go up a tiny bit. So, Ty's going to undo the back of that now.
And then he's going to go up a little bit. Down a tiny touch. Whoa. Up a little. Tiny bit. Yeah. Do it there.
Right. So now we've got that through. So we know we've got a measurement off the container there now. And then this isn't in right. So what we've got to do I'll run you through it and I'll give Ty the camera for a second and then it'll make more sense. Right. So what we want to do now is cuz we've got this running through but nothing's in at the right measurement. So we measure here. So we're going to go on this indent here.
We're going to measure that to center of that tube. And see there it's 15 and 12 inches. So we get the 15 and a half from here. So this is where we're all measured. We're all level. We're all square. And then we go over here. We'll go in the indent again and come here.
Ty. See this is 17. And we want to be 15 and 1/2. So what we do is we just undo the back of this. And that side's got a brace and everything on it. So it's not going to go anywhere. So we come here and then we literally just pull that in to there. Yeah. So that's 15 and 12. Now we can do this up. Hold him. Do that up.
And we can also get a rubber clip and put him on there. And then do that up.
Yeah. So now that's bang on straight.
Everything's square. So now we do another setup. Get our measurement in, whichever one he wants to do. Um, and he can get all that in. And then we can run this outside ledger in and measure them in. Don't forget to hit like and subscribe to the channel for more teaching content and the weekly videos we've been doing. So, we'll be doing loads more of these, teaching Tyler any everything from the basics all the way up to maybe temp roofs, droppers, beam sections out of roofs. I need to go and do my advanced tickets. So, maybe I'll take some of the stuff I learned there and teach Tyler some of that and then we'll get him on his courses. So, yeah, don't forget to hit like, subscribe.
Right. So, I'm just going to bang the middle legs in quickly cuz um obviously Ty knows how to do this. So, Ed just fast forward all of this.
Right. So, Ty's got all that set up.
He's got his double on. Now, what he's going to do, go on, Ty. Put it in. So, he's going to flick that double out.
I'll explain it to you as you go. Flick that this side. Just flick the double.
So, go up like that and just flick him.
Yeah. Now, I'm just singing that there.
Right. This is the bit you always make mistakes and everyone does it. Stop. So, this clip, our legs going to go here. So this clip always has to go on the inside like that. Yeah.
>> So it's always going to go there because your leg's going to go there and you go to put the leg on and it will kick it all out. So right you got that clip on.
Now you need to measure from this ledger back to this ledger. 35 in which is our measurement. So he's going to go from there 35 to center. That's it. Right on.
And then you can do that clip up. Always make sure there's enough sticking out there for your leg which there is.
So yeah, he's got his measurement now.
So this So basically this scaffold here from there to there to center is 35 in.
So he's copied that from there to there.
Now he's done 35 in, which means all your boards will fit and everything will run smoothly all the way up. So what he's got to do now, go over there, lift that up, level that leg in properly, and then we've just got to fill this corner leg in. Um, and then obviously just fill the middles and brace it. So Ty will just lift that up now and get all that level and square.
>> Lift it up.
>> Yep. Lift it up to there like normal without lifting your leg.
And now check he's square when you look down this way, which he's not. Needs to go towards you a little bit or like the whole thing. So it needs to go like that.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Yeah. Now he's square.
>> That's fine. Now do that up. No, you get that square first. So what you do is you eye down there. Get that square. Yeah.
Do that up.
Now you'll stick your level on this. Now you've got him in square. And just double check and just kick him square.
Yeah. So you always want to concentrate on getting this square. Then level your leg to whatever that is. That make sense?
>> Yeah.
>> So it'll move on that clip over there.
Remember I said leave a little gap. So this will this will this will move like quite a lot. So you could do it up there and you know you get to the top it's all out of square.
>> So you pull that in, eye down it >> about there. Do it up. Look. Cuz if you put your level on it, it will stay out of square. No, I mean can you not go like that?
>> Yeah. So, let's do this then. Now, level it. You're going to be way out, are you?
>> The square. Yeah, but you're you're only going off what you've put the pad down.
So, you're not actually squaring it, are you? You literally Yeah, >> you should do. Yeah.
>> All right.
>> So, you look up. This is why your legs are always out a little bit. So, just put it like that. Do that up square.
Then level your leg to whatever that is.
>> Now, level it. And then it'll stay all square as you go up and you won't have the problem we had on that one job, my house. So, yeah. Now, so once he's done all that, we've just got to put this corner leg in, fill that leg in, brace, take the temporary out, and then it's all done. Right. So, this corner leg, your legs always got to go off the bottom ledger. So, your double's got to go on there, not on there. Always off the bottom. So, you get your double like this.
If I can do it onehanded, like that. Put your level, put your double to there.
Put your pad in the right place. I always like the pads running the same way as the leg. Like I always turn them to the leg. So that will go there and then tie or bang him in. So keep him in the corner now. Tie once you've got your double in. And then level it both ways and just keep it tight there. So put your level on it both ways. So yeah, that's nice and level. Right. So now what I do get that so it's pushed. See how that's twisted then? So I push that so it's all nice and square. And I just gently do that up.
And then what I do is I literally just see that leg there. I'll push it up. See how it just come off the floor. Can you see it? That ready? So I'll push it up.
So that just comes off the floor and then do that up. And I can take this out now.
And now you have your scaffold through.
That's a return. You obviously got to put that clip on.
Always have the bolts to the inside where they're not on the corners.
And then you fill this leg in here. I'll show him how to do one of these legs.
So, put your dabble on.
Get your pad set in place like that. Put a five on like that. Check his square.
Ty's already learned all this.
Put that in. Push it so it's up to your five. It's square. And just gently nip that. Level him this way.
Like that. Level him that way. And then you should always put your level on there. But we're only on a small return.
I just gently push that up a little bit.
Do that up. Do that up. And then all that's left to do is put the braces in and [ __ ] But we won't [ __ ] We'll put some braces in and then we'll leave it at that. So yeah, now you just undo this. So this is how you put your brace in. Move your brace to wherever you want it, which is about there. These should probably be a bit longer. Then I get my swivel on. swivel like that.
I always like to leave that loose. Come up here. Push. Undo that. Push it right up. So is that's pushing down into the floor.
Oh, like that. Knew you'd get me, didn't you? And then do the bottom one. Do the same. So that's how you put your brace in. And then you've got a sway brace.
I'll quickly knock one of them in. Same again. Swivel on up to height.
Do him up.
Grab your 10. Put him straight in there onto your pad like that. Grab your swivel like that.
Put him in.
I leave it loose again. I'll pressure that as hard as I can.
And I'll come back down and just do that up.
And then yeah, you repeat that on all your braces all the way around. So take your set of butts out, brace in, put them where you want him, run that all the way around, and then all that's left then is chuck some [ __ ] on, boards on, hammer, and jobs are good, right? So this is a basic return, like very basic.
No, no further that way, no further that way. But we base this out normal 13T tower. Setups both sides, run that in.
Oversailed the ledges to make sure we can get our return. Oversailed that throw. Underslung off that clip there with a temp leg in to make sure the level's right. Brought that through.
Come over to here. Outside leg in. And then we can get our ledger through. Get our measurement. And then fill all the middle legs in all the way around. We got all the braces in now. So they're all done. And yeah, that's it. All you need to do now. Fives all the way along.
Make sure you're hitting with a cap on every corner. So one there, one there.
Hit in everywhere as a brace. Like all the way along and then every corner. And then you can take that as high as you want. Just got to make sure everything's nice and level. Right then, boys. That was a basic return and then we just beat the rain by the looks. So if you are enjoying this, don't forget to hit like, subscribe. We're going to be doing bigger and bigger things. Beams, just everything to do with scaffolding. We're going to document the whole thing. So Ty's learning very quick, ain't you?
>> T going to be throwing up three sides of the house next week.
>> That's it. He's smashing it. He's doing well. So yeah, it's going to be a series. We're going to go all the way through everything. We're going to be doing beams. We're going to be doing truss out temp roofs the lot, chimneys.
We're going to build a little chimney in the yard and he's going to have a go at chimney. And we're going to just keep documenting it until he can do absolutely everything. And I'll be sending him with his own team of 10 men and he'll be smashing out temp ruse a lot. Right, tune in next week and don't forget to hit like. See you in a bit.
