A heat dome is a high-pressure system that traps hot air in the upper atmosphere, creating a stationary bubble of extreme heat across an entire continent; scientists indicate that climate change has made such extreme May heatwaves three times more likely than in the past, as demonstrated by the 2024 European heatwave that killed at least 7 people in France and caused widespread health emergencies across multiple countries.

Europe Heatwave BREAKING: 7 DEAD in France as Europe Sizzles; UK, Spain, Austria BADLY HITAdded:
[music] >> Seven people are dead. Temperatures are climbing toward 40° and it's not even June yet.
Europe is burning and it's only getting worse this week.
France has been at the epicenter. Five people drowned over the weekend as desperate swimmers headed to lakes, rivers, and beaches to escape the heat.
A 53-year-old runner had a heart attack mid-race in Paris. A woman died from heatstroke at a sporting event in Lyon.
France's sports minister is now warning that competitions could be canceled outright in the coming days.
Paris recorded its first temperature above 30°C this year on Saturday. That was just the beginning.
By Friday, parts of southwest France could hit 40°C.
Brittany in the northwest is bracing for 36° today alone. Orange weather alerts are in force. And Monday, it was officially the hottest May day ever recorded in France since records began.
Meanwhile, across the channel, Britain hit 34.8°C on Monday, smashing a May record that had stood since 1944.
It's not just France. Northern Spain is expecting 34° today with parts of extreme Adura forecast to hit 38, possibly 40°.
Italy has imposed outdoor working bans and issued heat alerts warning of risks to life. Germany broke 30°C for the first time this year on Saturday with temperatures still rising.
The culprit is something called a heat dome. A high-pressure system locks into the upper atmosphere, forcing air downward, compressing it, heating it.
>> [snorts] >> Hot air expands, traps itself, and winds can't shift it. The result, a baking near-stationary bubble of extreme heat sitting over an entire continent. And scientists say climate change made a May record like this >> [music] >> three times more likely than it would have been in the past.
French PM Sébastien Lecornu is holding an emergency cabinet meeting on Thursday. The heat is expected to last at least through the weekend. Seven people have already paid with their lives, and the worst of this may still be ahead. Stay safe out there, and if you're in Europe right now, stay indoors during peak hours.
