And sitting on top of all of it in a small unsealed envelope, a single sheet of stationery with handwriting on it. The handwriting was newer than the rest. The paper had not yellowed. The date in the corner was August 11th, 2010. Margaret Holloway picked it up. Her hand shook so hard she had to set it down on the table to read it. "It's from her," she whispered.
"It's from my grandmother. It's dated 15 years ago. She read it aloud. If you are reading this, then a hallway with steel in her has finally walked back into that town. I am writing this letter on the eve of disappearing for the last time. I am 84 years old this winter by my own count, and I have decided that I cannot wait forever, and I will not be hunted forever. I am going to a place where they will not find me. I will live the rest of my life there alone and that is all right because I have already lived a long time and I have already loved everything I had to love. But I am leaving this letter here for one reason.
I do not want to die without seeing you.
If you have come this far, if you have opened this box, then you are her. You are the one we have been waiting for. I am asking you please before you do anything else. Before you go back to Pennsylvania, before you face the men who took everything from us to come and find me, bring my granddaughter, Ruth's daughter, if she will come. The truck rolled to a stop in the dirt drive. None of them moved. The front door opened. A woman came out onto the porch. She was very old. She walked with a cane. She wore a pale blue cardigan and a long gray skirt, and her hair was white and pinned up at the back of her head in the same style she had worn in the photograph from 1973. Her hands, when she lifted one to shade her eyes against the afternoon sun, were the long fingered hands of an engineer. Her back was straight. She squinted out at the truck. She saw them. She did not move for a long moment. She put one hand flat against the porch post to steady herself. The other hand she pressed against her mouth. Then she lifted the hand from her mouth and she waved. just once, just a small, slow wave. Delaney was the first one out of the truck. She did not remember walking up the path.
She did not remember the four wooden steps of the blue porch. She only remembered that when she got to the top step, Cordelia Holloway, 84 years old, blood of her blood, the engineer of a dream that had been buried under 52 years of mud and silence, took her great granddaughter's face in both of her long thin hands and looked at her for a very long time. They stayed three days. They sat on the blue porch. They drank tea. Cordelia told them the things she had been keeping for 50 years. She told them about the patent, the grants, the men who had laughed at her in 1971, the night she had taken Ruth out of Slater Run in the back of a milk truck wrapped in a wool blanket. He had taken Delaney's call 11 days earlier. He had listened. He had said very quietly, "Miss Holloway, I have been a police officer for a long time, and I have learned that some cases come to you on a Tuesday because they have been waiting for a Tuesday for 50 years. I will help you." He had spent those 11 days assembling with great quiet care the warrant that had been served on Ashcraftoft Holdings at 6:00 that morning. The state was preparing 14 separate indictments. They would be unsealed within 72 hours. Delaney stood at the table and she did not make a speech. She did not need to. Garrett Whitlock stood at the far end of the rock by his pickup truck.
He had his old hat in his hands. He was looking at the water. He was looking at the small ripples the evening breeze had begun to make on the pale blue surface.
He was smiling. Not a wide smile, just a small, private smile of an old man who has waited 52 years to be told that the 18-year-old boy he used to be was finally on this evening forgiven. The water moved. The light moved on the water.
