The Battle of Thermopylae featured 5,000-7,000 Greek defenders (Spartans, Thespians, and Thebans) against 100,000-300,000 Persians, with the narrow pass (50 ft wide) neutralizing the Persian numerical advantage; after Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain trail, Leonidas strategically withdrew most forces while 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians formed a rear guard that died to the last man, with the number 300 becoming legendary because it represents those who chose to stay and fight rather than retreat.

The 300 Spartans Were Not 300. The Truth Is Better.Added:
You have been told the story. 300 Spartans, a narrow pass, an empire stopped by 300 men who chose to die rather than retreat. It is on t-shirts, it is in movies, it is on motivational posters in gyms across the world. It is also wrong. The Greek force at Thermopylae was not 300 men. It was between 5,000 and 7,000 Spartans, Thespians, Thebans, Arcadians. A coalition of city-states standing against a Persian force estimated at 100,000 to 300,000 men. The pass was the strategy. Thermopylae was a coastal bottleneck barely 50 ft wide. In a corridor that narrow, an army of 300,000 has the same problem as an army of 300.
You can only send so many men at once.
For 2 days it worked. The Persian infantry, including the Immortals, the most elite soldiers in the empire, broke against the Spartan phalanx and died in numbers that stunned Xerxes watching from his throne. Then a Greek man named Ephialtes walked into the Persian camp and sold them a goat trail through the mountains. One night's march around the pass, behind the Greeks. When Leonidas received the news at dawn, he sent most of the army home. Not cowardice, strategy. Someone had to survive to fight the battles that came after. He sent them home because the war was larger than the pass. Then he stayed.
300 Spartans, 700 Thespians who refused to leave. Roughly 1,000 men who formed a rear guard so the rest could escape.
They knew exactly what they were doing.
The Persians came from both sides. It ended in hours. Stone was placed at the pass. The inscription read, "Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie."
300 is the number history remembered because 300 is the number that chose to stay. The 700 Thespians died beside them. Every single one. Nobody made a movie about them.
