The John Deere MX10 is a 10-foot pull-style brush cutter that extends 2 feet on each side of the tractor, allowing operators to mow under trees without driving beneath them; it requires a minimum of 40 horsepower for pull-type operation and 60 horsepower for lift-type operation, with safety considerations including the risk of jackknifing if not operated carefully, and the term 'bush hog' has become a generic industry term for brush cutters regardless of brand.

John Deere MX10 Brush HoggingAdded:
Hey everybody, welcome to the video. So, we're here today with a I will say semi-infamous John Deere MX10. And the reason this is somewhat infamous is our number one video on our channel was pulling this MX10 by John Deere out of the woods and getting it operating behind the International. So, that was a couple years ago and it's been working fine since. So, today we've got it behind the Kubota MX5100, which is a 50 horsepower tractor. And we're going to go mow around the dry pond.
This pond was put in and it never did hold water. So, now it's just kind of a menagerie, but we still love it. Check it out.
So, check that path out. I ain't saying it's perfect, but I'm saying that's 10 ft of grass goodness.
Got to love it.
All right. Well, we'll sneak by the AC mailbox tractor here. If anybody wants to see if that old mailbox tractor will start up, put it in the comments. You know, that was driven to that spot probably 8 years ago and I'll bet that old thing will still start.
>> I like these pull style brush cutters.
You can back them up and get them independent from the way the tractor's going. Now, the drawback of that is you got to be careful cuz if you're not that good at backing up a trailer, or a brush cutter in this case, you can jackknife it. But what I found with these brush cutters is a lot of times I can keep my tractor on better ground and kind of jackknife that cutter up into something I want cut without ever having to bring that tractor into that terrain. And that's pretty nice.
But there's a little bit of skill to it.
And one of the dangers of it is you can jackknife it and tear up your PTO shaft.
So, that can happen going backwards or forwards. So, you just have to be careful. But once you get used to it, it's just kind of a little bit of a different advantage than the three-point hitch cutters.
This 10-ft cutter sticks out 2 ft on each side of my tractor. And that's pretty handy for mowing under these trees. I don't have to drive under them, but I can cut under them for a little bit anyway.
>> All right. So, this is the John Deere MX10 brush cutter.
But, I kind of went to an awful lot of equipment auctions and farm auctions when I was young.
And you know what? Around here, every one of these cutters, regardless regardless of brand, was just called a bush hog.
And in fact, it became a verb even. When somebody'd say, "What you've been doing?" Said, "I've been out bush hogging."
Well, it didn't matter if you owned a bush hog or not. That's just what they're called. And if that really bothers you, I could hand you a Kleenex, but all I got is facial tissue.
I normally use this cutter behind my International 1086. And I usually use it over at our pond. And over there, there's a lot more open ground. There's a lot less stuff to go around. And it's awfully nice being able to stay farther away from that lake and still mow the edge of it.
And I was kind of a little concerned on how this Kabota would handle this cutter. But I'll tell you what, it's doing really good. Now, I will say that probably later in the summer, I won't want to use this Kabota just because this cutter stirs up an awful lot of stuff. But in that International, it's got a air conditioned cab. And I love that thing there. But you know, use what you got. And right now, I had the Kabota out, so I'm using it.
>> To me, using a big cutter like this is just instant gratification cuz you can turn an area that is overgrown and kind of nasty-looking into a really nice-looking green space in a very short amount of time.
And that's just really a feeling that can't be beat.
Get out and get you some mowing in.
All right, so here's the finished product.
And, you know, was it perfect? No, not by a long shot.
But, I think it's looks really good.
So, definitely good enough for me for what I want it to look like.
And I'll tell you what, that John Deere MX10 sure made quick work of it.
One of the things this has is these spacer bars, and the only problem I've got with them is I need a little bit more. I like uh probably another 2 in and this would be perfect sit right down on it.
But, as it is we'll throw a safety bar on there for travel mode.
And it's not sitting it's totally straight, but you can see how much wider this uh brush cutter is than my Kubota tractor.
But, it spun it just fine.
The only thing I had to watch was going by trees. This John Deere MX10 cutter is recommended for a 40 horsepower tractor minimum if it's pull type and 60 horsepower minimum if it's the lift type with the three-point hitch. So, this Kubota MX5100 at 50 horsepower is almost the perfect tractor to run this. I'll tell you what though, I would like a cab. Cutting all this stuff has got the insects and the pollen kicked up and my allergies are starting to kick in.
If you got anything out of this video, give us a thumbs up. It absolutely helps the channel and we invite you to subscribe to see more. Have a great day and be safe.
