Abnormal Things for June - What They MeanAdded:
Abnormally cold air in the Arctic for this time of year, we're also dealing with a lot of dry and cool air working down the Eastern Seaboard. We're going to talk about that. Plus this huge anomaly of warm air across Canada. That right there guys is going to really affect the weather pattern over the next couple days and we're going to go ahead and compare and contrast how much snow and ice we have on the ground this time of year compared to last year. Let's go ahead and start with there because that's where we are here on the maps.
This is snow and ice. Ice represented by sort of this yellowish orange blue is snow pack. This is where we are right now at the end of May. This is where we were last year. And one thing to note is these frozen lakes here across Canada.
Watch this area. This is last year, this year. So there's a little more ice on the ground. I think that's indicative of really what we saw this winter. It was just so cold up in this region.
Again, we're warming up well above average. I'm expect rapid snow melt and ice melt here and we're already seeing that. And here's the thing though. Look at this cold air. I mean this is the anomaly, right? Right across the Arctic Ocean and then some of that spilling into Canada.
And what I'm thinking and what we've seen over the last couple of weeks is a lot of this cold air has been getting tapped into and brought south because of the ridging that we've seen across parts of Canada, right? Here's the first one that we've dealt with this weekend. It brought the snow to parts of New Hampshire and Vermont. Big snow too by the way up at top of Mount Washington.
This ridge is going to start to break down. That's going to allow a couple of things. First it's going to get back closer to normal. Still pretty warm up here across Canada, but we're also going to see things warm up across the Eastern Seaboard. We're going to go from well below average to downright hot by the time we get to the end of the week. And by the way, there's a lot of dry air that's going to work in from the northeast across a lot of the Eastern US. We'll look at that in just a second.
Another thing that I think we have to watch too is going to be some of this cold pooling of air that starts to swing into the west. You know, that could actually bring some stronger storms that we're going to see not just today out of this piece of energy that's lifting north, but uh as we head into Wednesday, Thursday, into Friday, maybe even into next week, right? Are we setting up for sort of a longer range severe weather event? More to come on all of this.
Some stronger storms today, too. That's going to impact parts of Colorado. This is going to be the highest risk area for tornadoes in Nebraska, also into Kansas.
Also stronger storms into the Tennessee Valley, especially along the Mississippi River from Memphis further south into northern Mississippi, northern Alabama.
There could even be some strong storms as far east as northern Georgia and South northern South Carolina and parts of Tennessee.
Damaging winds, hail, also the risk for some tornadoes are going to be on the table today. The biggest risk again across Colorado, Nebraska, also into Kansas. As we head into tomorrow, more storms possible a little bit further to the north and west. Now we're looking up into the Dakotas, stretching all the way down to Texas and then your day three outlook.
Same areas, just a little bit further east. And by the way, I glazed over this day two. We're still going to be dealing with some storms into Florida as that front drops to the south, which is going to bring a dramatic change again to the Mid-Atlantic. In just a second, I'm going to show you that. I want to show you the radar first. We're going to work our way west and then go east. There's the big storms that fire up this afternoon east of the Rockies as we head toward 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 from Wyoming into Nebraska, Colorado, into Kansas.
Some of these could get really tall and really strong with damaging winds, a few tornadoes possible, also across Arkansas into Mississippi and Alabama. This looks more like a straight-line damaging wind event as our front drops to the south.
Either way, some gusty winds, some hail also possible, but I think the big thing will be the damaging wind threat here.
A tornado can't be completely ruled out as this drops to the south. Really heavy rain by the way overnight into parts of Missouri as we head through this afternoon. Not nearly as much precipitation focused across central Missouri, most of that moving south into Arkansas and then tomorrow, we will see more rain showers back to the west from Texas north all the way to the Dakotas that we've talked about. Let's go east now. This front that's dropping south that's bringing the severe weather, bringing in some much drier air into Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, even into North Carolina.
These showers and storms drop all the way into southern Georgia as we head into Tuesday afternoon. That's why Florida heads up as we head into the afternoon on Tuesday from South Carolina, Hilton Head, uh all the way back to Tallahassee, even Destin and Panama City. Some of these storms could get strong as this moves down the peninsula as we head into Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Some rain associated with this. Good news where it's drought stricken here across parts of southern Georgia and Florida.
Across the west, not much rain falling across the four corner states except for maybe New Mexico and eastern Colorado.
Otherwise, we're dry from California all the way up even into Washington and Oregon. It's pretty dry here. And then a lot of rain though falling into Montana, into parts of Alberta. There's been some flooding going on into this part of the country. And I think we're going to see some more as this low sits here and meanders with this up slope component, you're getting some up slope flow as that air rises up the prairies. And once it hits the mountains, it really goes up. And we got a lot of snow coming down into the mountains here into Alberta, down into Montana. Really high up though, some pretty high snow levels. But that's the thing, right? Some of those rivers are pretty high up into this part of North America. And unfortunately, more precip on the way.
High pressure settling in. Look at this dropping down from the Hudson Bay. Dry air pushing all the way down into the south.
Take a look at this. This is a the surface map, but I want to go back to this map. This is precipitable water.
This is a measure of all the moisture if you were to squeeze it out from the bottom of the atmosphere all the way to the top.
All the colors, clearly that's the moisture. Here comes that dry air. You can see it sitting over the northeast.
Look how it just pinwheels in at the surface pushing all the way back to Missouri, into Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, even into Georgia. Some of the most oppressive heat that I was ever shocked by was this time of year many, many years ago. First week of June, I remember hopping out of the car at the ripe age of 18 years old and it was in Macon, Georgia and I just couldn't believe the shock of the heat. It just it's it it hits smack you in the face. If you if you're from this region, you know what I'm talking about and that's just common across the South.
This is uncommon. Early June, you've got a lot of dry air moving in. Not just from Macon, but Atlanta, all the way back to Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, as far west as Starkville.
Here's the thing though, Southern Mississippi, Louisiana, sorry, no relief for you. This does something weird here in the Florida, too. Brings quite a bit of an initially fetch. Eventually, the moisture is going to win and it's going to get sticky and humid again for everybody. So, June weather will return.
All right, let's continue this out. High pressure again setting in over the Ohio Valley. On the backside of this, a lot of moisture flowing north. This is going all the way up into Canada. A lot of rain from the Gulf Coast all the way up to the Hudson Bay as a result of this.
High pressure still holding on. A dry week here across a lot of this region.
Across the west, we've got this cold pocket of air moving into the Pacific Northwest. That's going to put some rain and yep, believe it or not, more snow possible into the high elevations of the Cascades, north into British Columbia.
Cold and uh I mean, this is un- unusually cold here.
So, more snow falling.
Uh it's starting to be the tourist season up here in the mountains and uh we're dealing with snow. All right.
More rain though back into the east as our flow turns sort of southerly now as this high slips off the East Coast. Your return flow at the surface much different looking than what we're dealing with as we start out this week.
So, changes are on the way.
If you don't like the weather, hang around long enough, it'll change and probably change again.
Here's where we're going to be this afternoon. Just a side note, some of the valleys, especially into the Appalachians, have seen some frost over the last couple of days, and I mean it's no wonder. You get into the 30s, you get into those sheltered valleys. I mean, I'm talking about really from the northeast all the way down into parts of West Virginia. You know, in this region, especially into the mountainous areas and those valleys where that cold air seeps into the mornings when you don't have much wind.
It's no wonder we had a few frost reports yesterday.
If you're getting frost, let me know in the comments down below. I always love hearing about abnormal things like that in the weather or maybe something going on where you are that's just a little different. Let me know. I always like reading that. All right, here's where we are on Tuesday. The heat getting suppressed in the south. Look at this.
Wednesday morning, Columbia, South Carolina 57, northeast Georgia, Rome, Athens in the 50s. Highs in the 70s. Close I mean, I don't even know if we're going to crack 80 for place like Athens and Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina. I And I'm talking about Athens, Georgia. Atlanta, go all the way north, Alpharetta, up to Chattanooga, 70s. Even down to Macon.
That we talked about. Out towards Warner Robins. Man, look at these temperatures.
Now we finally start to warm up some.
The summer heat is back as we head toward Friday. In fact, right here. Look at this from Charlotte, Greensboro, north up to Richmond, DC, Philly, all the way up to New Jersey.
We're into the 90s here by Friday afternoon. So, summer will win back again. Here's where we are this afternoon. Across the Red River, it's going to be hot. Triple digits possible in some areas by the evening hours.
Overnight lows not very cool, 70s and even 80s across parts of Texas. Another hot one tomorrow. No relief to the heat across Texas. We will start to see more cloud cover, though. I say no relief, but I guess there will be some with the showers and thunderstorms around. The humidity will stick around, so it's going to definitely feel oppressively warm. And then as we head into the rest of the week, it does cool down some, especially the further north you go into Oklahoma. And and it starts to get warm again as we head into next week. Across the west, there's the cold air across Montana. Man, it's chilly up here in the mountains. Places like Glacier, you get up north up into Banff especially in the higher elevations here. Over towards even I mean even the Pacific Northwest.
I mean, it's warm but not downright hot here in the eastern Oregon and Washington. Through Spokane, down to Boise in the low 80s. It gets a little warmer though, especially in a Boise by Wednesday and Thursday.
Thursday a little bit cooler though and that next piece of energy starting to affect this part of the continent by the time we get to Friday.
All right, that was a lot.
Thanks for watching guys. Hope you have a great Monday and more to come as we watch this very strange weather pattern that's probably going to start to turn back to what we would normally expect by summer, I think toward the weekend. See you next time.
