All carbohydrates are sugar, and a simple calculation (carbohydrates ÷ 4) reveals that common foods like crumpets, Oreos, Haribo, and Cheerios contain far more sugar than people realize—potentially 35-42 teaspoons per serving, which is 35-42 times more than the body needs at any given time, contributing to insulin resistance and related health issues.

We Couldn't Believe How Much Sugar Was In These Foods
Added:I'm just going to go and see what Rich is up to because he said about half an hour ago that he was going to record a video and he's been very quiet.
So, let's go and see what he's doing. Hope I don't scare him.
[laughter] >> What are you doing?
So, I am currently prepping to record some content. Do you >> I am filming, by the way.
>> Do you want to know what it's about?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Well, there we are. Let's get into it now. Bit of practice. So, what I've put on the table are one, two, three, four common types of foods that one would feed their kids, for example. So, we've got Warbertton's crumpets. There we've got a pack of Harios.
pack of Oreo biscuits and some Nestle Cheerios, which I used to love when I was growing up.
>> Oh, me too.
>> Now, what I wanted to do with this was to show people how much sugar is in each serving of these because there's a lot more sugar in these than one would would believe. So, what I wanted to do is start with these complex. So if you come in a little closer, what you can see there is that per 100 gram, 35.3 g per 100 per.
>> I don't think it's focusing.
>> No. Okay. Well, we'll talk it through.
19.4 gram of carbohydrates per crumput.
Underneath it will say of which sugars or in fact it doesn't on this, which is unusual, but it will usually tell you.
>> Is that because there's no sugar?
>> So this is what people think. So they'll see carbohydrates and then they look for the sugar and there's literally no sugar listed on there. Oh, in fact it is.
Sorry, apologies. I can see underneath.
Look. So it says of which sugar is 1.1.
Okay. So 19.4 g of carbs per crumput of which sugars 1.1. Now a person is going to look at this and think well there's not many sugars in there.
>> Yeah.
>> But the fact is 19.4 four grams 100% of those carbohydrates sugar all carbs sugar and this is what people don't realize of which sugars are of which sugars immediately the rest of the carbohydrates are stored in the body in the muscle as glycogen and they sugar after so all carbohydrate sugar now the simple the simple equation to work out how much sugar is in is in this is you divide the carbohydrates by four and that gives you the level of teaspoons.
Now, an average adult carries around or requires one teaspoon of sugar at any given time, which doesn't sound like much. What I'm going to work out with this is how many teaspoons of sugar are in each one of these per serving.
>> Oh, cool. That's going to be really interesting.
>> So, this is going to blow your mind.
Honestly, >> it's crazy cuz with the crumpets, you just wouldn't expect there to be sugar in there.
>> No, but all carbs are sugar. Now, sugar, I'm I'm not demonizing sugar. I'm not telling you not to give your children sweets or or any of these things, but sugar is incredibly damaging to the body when we put too much into the system. So if if you and I only require one teaspoon before insulin is elicited to pull the rest of the of the sugar out of the blood to save your life, then you don't want to be putting too much more than one teaspoon in at any given time.
Yeah.
>> So what we do with this, we take the 19.4 and I'm going to do this on my calculator. We divide this by four.
>> This is how many teaspoons are in each one of these crumpets. You ready for this?
>> Yeah. I'm excited to see.
>> One, two.
>> No way. That's already way more than I was expecting.
>> Four 85.
Just under five tables, sorry, teaspoons of sugar in one >> in one crumpet.
>> In one crumpet. [gasps] >> How many of your kids are going to eat just one crumpet? Well, if I was when I used to eat them, I would have two or three at least.
>> You're looking at at least double that amount.
>> Oh my god.
>> So, there's five almost five teaspoons of sugar in there. So, effectively, we could potentially be looking as much as 10 teaspoon of sugar [snorts] per serving of crumpets.
Haribo.
>> Oh, god.
>> Right. So, we know the Haribo contain sugar. Okay. But, you know what they recommend on this is they recommend per portion 25 g. Uh, and the packet is 175 grams. So, what they're saying effectively is there that you're going to get like six to eight servings. I don't know any child, no child of mine is going to eat one or two of them and be satisfied. You're eating that packet.
>> Yeah.
>> I I think you're eating that packet.
>> Mhm.
>> Fair to agree >> 100%.
>> Okay. So, what we're going to do is we're going to take the amount of carbohydrates in this.
>> I'm not even going to tell you how many carbs is in this cuz I'm going to blow your mind. Okay.
>> Oh my god. I can't wait to see. So, we've got >> we've got that multiplied by >> I can't I just can't believe that's one crumpet.
>> Oh my god. This is going to blow your mind.
>> Oh my god. Go on. Let's see.
>> This is going to Do you know what? I don't know whether we should come back to this one. This is going to blow your mind.
>> Oh, [screaming] I want to see it now, though. Okay, let's go. Let's go back to that. Let's come back to this. Okay, let's leave that.
>> Let's come back to this one. Okay.
>> So, keep keep watching to see how much is in this. Just this one pack.
>> Okay. Oh my god. I'm I'm like really excited.
>> Oreo biscuits. I used to love these when I was growing up. So, Oreo biscuits.
Let's look at this. So, there's >> Were they available when you were growing up?
>> You cheeky.
>> That was my time.
>> I'm not that old.
Contrary to pop, I believe. [laughter] Okay. So, we got the size per.
Let's open these up. It's a shame these are going to go in the bin, isn't it?
Look, the these are absolutely tiny.
>> Oh my god, that's one. I don't know how I would probably I would probably eat the whole packet. Okay, >> 100% the packet, but let's do a few as a serving.
>> How many do you think you have children, three boys? How many do you think they would consume per serving?
>> I think three or four.
>> Okay. Do you want to go three or four?
>> Let's go three.
>> Let's go. Okay. So, let's go three.
Okay. So, that's that there. Yeah.
>> Mhm.
>> Three tiny little biscuits.
Now, I'm going to work out from this.
Let me do my calculations. So, we've got that multiplied by three divided by that. Are you ready for this?
>> Yeah. [laughter] I love this.
>> One teaspoon.
Two.
>> Oh, the suspense. Three. Super exciting.
Life on the edge. Four.
Five.
>> Oh my god. Is this three biscuits? Did you say >> three biscuits?
Six.
>> Seven. I haven't finished yet.
>> Oh my god.
>> Eight.
>> No, we're in three.
>> Nine. [gasps] >> 10.
>> Oh my god. Stop.
>> 10.5 teaspoon of sugar.
>> Oh my god. And I I would have eaten the packet >> in that.
>> That is 10 and a half times more sugar or blood glucose than an adult human being needs at any one time. What is that doing to our kids >> out of how many how many lots of three are in there? Because I 100% would have eaten that whole packet. So we've got so two lots of three, three lots of three, four lots of three.
So there's four >> and two left over.
>> So >> 10 20 30 40 That's 42 >> and a bit >> teaspoon of sugar.
>> Oh my god.
>> In that pack.
>> Oh my god. That makes you look at it really really differently. Like you know as you know I'm not anti sugar but when we are consuming these things and we believe that we're not consuming sugar like the crump bits it basically says there's hardly any sugar in there of which sugars you know if we look at if we look at these Oreos just in curiosity of which sugars it says it does say half of the carbohydrates in their sugar but still per one it looks at 7 1/2 grams we think that's all right 7 and 1 half grams but that even that is still two uh teaspoons of sugar, but all carbohydrate sugar.
And that's really important to remember.
>> Oh my god.
>> One of my old favorites, box of Cheerios.
So, they recommend per serving on this 30 g.
>> I was going to say I know that because I spent many, many years weighing out my 30 g bowls of cereal.
>> Did you ever eat more than 30 gram?
>> Oh, 100%. Always 30 g. I I always used to say that was enough to feed a hamster.
That's the thing that the portion sizes, they're not realistic with them either, are they?
>> This is 30 g. Okay. It's like literally like little more than a handful. That's not an awful lot.
>> No.
>> I don't know many kids that are going to eat as little as this.
>> Mhm.
>> I think it's fair to say, you know, a an average. Plus, if you're not adding the milk to this, mind, >> it's hard to do it without a bowl because I would have just filled up the bowl >> and that is what what the kids would do as well. If they if they [clears throat] just got hold of that box, >> that whole bowl is being filled up.
>> Yeah. And the milk on top.
>> Yeah. And I think I think that's a fair amount there. I think that would fill a bowl.
>> So, I've put in 50 grams there. In fact, it's just gone a little over a 55, but let's let's call it 50. Okay. So, I'm going to look at the carbohydrates in this. Um, so the carbohydrates are that >> Oh god, they smell sweet as well.
>> They do smell nice. I used to love smell.
>> I used to love them.
>> But the thing is like pe people think because of what we do that we don't like these things. Like I'm a sugar addict.
Me too, >> you know. But like I no longer eat this because it's it's literally toxic. Okay, so ready for this. Let's get my thing of sugar. So a healthy bowl of Cheerios.
Are we ready? Oh, >> there's one, two, three.
>> You're going to run out soon.
>> Should have bought a few bags.
>> Five. [laughter] I think we should have.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
Nine. Without the milk. So, with the milk, we're looking at around 10 to 11 teaspoon.
>> And we can account that for the Oreos as well, because who isn't eating Oreos without a glass of milk?
>> Glass of milk. Yeah. 100%.
>> Dunk your Oreos in >> 100%. So, so far, like, these haven't fed very well. But this, I mean, the thing is we we know that there's sugar in this. Yeah, we know that there's sugar in the Haribo boat, >> but this amount of sugar in that. This amount of sugar in that. I mean, what the hell is that?
Do you mean it's crazy?
>> That amount of sugar in one. Oh, no. Did we do one or two crumpets?
>> One. That's one.
>> That's That's per serving. That's one crumpet.
>> Yeah.
>> One. Let's get back to these. Now, this is going to be exciting. Now, we all know that the sugar in sweets, but the thing is I don't think people realize how detrimental that the sweets are. So, this is this is 175.
So, I'm going to do that multiplied by 1.75 to give me the total.
>> You don't have to do your recording now.
I'm doing it for you.
>> Just as well. You came up while I was prepping then, isn't it? [laughter] >> Well, you were too quiet for too long.
>> Well, it's taking me this long to prep.
Just as well I didn't do a trial run, isn't it? With all all of the sugar.
This has cost me a fortune. [laughter] I'm going to have I'm going to have to take all this now and give it to somebody that I don't like.
[laughter] Not going to give it to anybody you care about. Okay. Are we ready for this now?
>> Yeah.
>> This is going to blow your mind.
>> Go on.
>> One, two, three, four, five, [sighs] six.
I'm tipping off of it all over the floor. Seven 8 9 10 11 >> Oh my god, stop.
>> 12 13 >> Is the glass going to be big enough?
>> 14? I don't think so. 15 >> No way.
>> 16 17 18 >> You're not even close to stopping. 19.
I'm I'm really not. 20 21 >> Oh my god.
>> 22 23.
Shall I continue by filling one of the others?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh my god.
>> 23.
>> And this is in that bag of Haribo.
>> That bag of Haribo. 24.
25.
>> Oh my god. 26 27 28 29 30 >> Oh my god, stop.
>> 32 >> I genuinely am. Like I was not expecting that.
>> 34.
>> Oh my god.
>> Neither was I.
>> 35.
>> When did you realize this?
>> 35.8 [gasps] teaspoon of sugar. that. So when you feed your kids this and they they consume the full pack, this is what they're consuming.
>> Oh my god.
>> So when parents look at me and think, "Oh, well, you you're mean to your children, so you don't allow them sweets and these are the compounds." This is the reason why this is overloading your child's blood glucose by 36 times minimum. And this will drive >> and that's not all they're eating in a day. That's not the only sugar they're having in a day, >> but this is the reason that they they become hypoglycemic. So they need more sugar. This literally drives insulin resistance which drives diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's. These are the cause of these issues. Diabetes is a um it's caused by diet. It's caused by consuming too much sugar and it can be reversed by diet. The thing is by feeding your kids all of these, you're literally driving type 2 diabetes from from a young age, you were getting them addicted to sugary treats. Even these I mean you wouldn't even class this as sugar you know yet there was what five or six teaspoons in one crumpet.
>> Well you just think that there is is there's no sugar in there.
>> Yeah. Absolutely crazy.
>> Sugar is not on the ingredients. You just assume it doesn't have any.
>> Yeah. So there it is. Think twice before feeding the kids Cheerios and Oreos.
This one is the one that blew my mind.
>> I know. I can't believe that.
>> There we are. End of there. I think I'll do >> Okay. Got anything to say to me? Thank you for recording your video.
>> Thank you for recording my incredible video.
[laughter] >> We'll leave it there.
