These states were ruled by kings, maharajahs, and nawabs. Some wanted to join India. Some wanted to join Pakistan. And some wanted to remain independent. That's when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stepped in. Known today as the Iron Man of India, Patel began negotiating with rulers across the country, convincing them to join the Indian Union. Most states agreed peacefully, but a few became major challenges. Junagadh, a Hindu-majority state with a Muslim ruler, initially chose Pakistan. After political unrest and a public vote, it joined India. Then came Hyderabad. The Nizam wanted to remain independent, but in 1948, India launched Operation Polo. In just 5 days, Hyderabad became part of India. And then there was Kashmir. Its ruler signed the Instrument of Accession to India during an invasion, triggering a conflict that continues to influence the region today.
