The Greek word that changes everything about faith

[00:00:30]And pistis, in the first-century Greek world, did not mean belief either.

[00:00:36]It meant trust, loyalty, commitment to a relationship that holds even when the outcome is uncertain.

[00:00:45]Pistis was the word used in commercial contracts, the bond between a merchant and a partner on the other side of the Mediterranean.

[00:00:53]It was used in political alliances, the loyalty that kept a treaty intact when circumstances made breaking it tempting.

[00:01:07]It was a relational word, not a cognitive one.

[00:01:12]So, when Paul uses this word, a word his audience understood immediately from daily life, he is not talking about a conclusion reached by logical analysis.
