By reclaiming the relational essence of *pistis*, this analysis restores the biblical concept of faith to its original context of lived loyalty. It provides a much-needed shift from seeing faith as mere intellectual assent to understanding it as an active, enduring commitment.

The Greek word that changes everything about faithAñadido:
The New Testament is not written in Latin. It was written in Greek.
And the Greek word the New Testament uses every single time it talks about faith is pistis.
Paul uses it constantly.
The letter to the Hebrews opens its famous definition with it.
Every writer in that tradition reaches for it when they want to describe what a person owes to God and what God offers in return.
And pistis, in the first-century Greek world, did not mean belief either.
It meant trust, loyalty, commitment to a relationship that holds even when the outcome is uncertain.
Pistis was the word used in commercial contracts, the bond between a merchant and a partner on the other side of the Mediterranean.
It was used in political alliances, the loyalty that kept a treaty intact when circumstances made breaking it tempting.
Between patrons and clients, between generals and soldiers.
It was a relational word, not a cognitive one.
So, when Paul uses this word, a word his audience understood immediately from daily life, he is not talking about a conclusion reached by logical analysis.
He is talking about a commitment made under uncertainty.
