Early morels (Verpa bohemica), also known as wrinkled thimble morels or false morels, are edible mushrooms that can be identified by their distinctive wrinkled caps and hollow stems, and they often grow near indicator plants like parasitic flowers (veraba) and prime roses, typically appearing in March-April under various tree species including aspens, willows, and pines.

Mushrooms I Found in April 2026 - Spring Mushrooms Foraging - Verpa bohemica - Morchella - GyromitraAdded:
Hi guys, it's Luke from Luke's Mushrooms and welcome to my first video recorded in 2026.
I often have bad luck for this location because I'm either too early or too late.
But look at this one.
A beautiful veraba.
Pictures taken. Now take the mushroom.
Today is Friday the 24th of April 2026 and this is the first mushroom to pick.
I am recording.
I wanted to show you this purple or pink flowers.
This is a plant but it has no green parts. It does no photosynthesis.
It's parasiting on myelium of some kind of mushroom.
And in my experience, it's a good indicator to also search for morels or these ringled timble morels.
I often find them next to each other.
And there are more of them.
Another one.
Two.
three.
Most of them are too small, but I will take some of them.
I'm leaving most of them behind because they are either not in a good shape or they are too small.
But this one seems to be good to take. Yes, I often pick this size.
Another indicator of wrinkled timble morels are prime roses. At least I hope this this is the name of these flowers.
And it's plenty of them today.
And just a few meters from the prime roses, I have spotted something where is the second one.
Here is another one. And I think this one will be great for a picture.
So after taking the picture, I'm taking the mushroom as well.
I think this one is one of the most beautiful ones today.
My first finds of brain fungus this season.
They are also called false morals.
In my experience, these like to grow under spruces and pines during similar time as true morals.
Last time I seen this in June last year.
The full Latin name of this species is gerometra esculenta and you can find a picture of it at the page 104 in my mushroom photography book together with many other pictures including a verabimika for example.
The link to this book is in the description of the video and it's the best way how to support my channel.
Thank you.
Another spot with some nice mushrooms.
I really like this one.
It looks perfect.
Here is a one I just picked.
Second one.
And the third one was also great for a picture and also great for picking.
One of the best things in the forest, such creeks with fresh water.
Here is quite an unexpected find from the forest road and one of the most beautiful early morels or wherea I've ever found.
Of course, I had to take a picture.
I will also take this beautiful mushroom to my basket.
Amazing detail.
I really like the wrinkles.
And there is a neighbor.
A bit different color, a bit different size.
Here they are next to each other.
I'm in a very difficult terrain now.
It's difficult to move here. Look what I found.
I took a picture and of course I'm also taking this twins.
Then this is probably the biggest today.
The stem is really huge but the head as well looks amazing.
I need to crouch, but I should be rewarded by more beautiful mushrooms here.
Let's put them here. That's four.
Still, we have something more, but it will take a little bit of time for me to get there.
So, two more beauties.
So, that's where I was picking somewhere there between those fallen trees. Now I'm trying to go from the side because I saw these guys and other beautiful one. I stopped comparing which one is the largest or the most beautiful.
They are all amazing.
And I'm happy I got the timing right at this location today.
It's funny that I was picking them in March and now I'm picking the same species again, but in March it was in a bit warmer area under willows and poppplers, mostly willows.
And it's known that they start the season later under aspens, which is the case today.
Okay. How do I get there?
It is also known that under aspens they may grow a bit bigger which can be seen here. It's really a monster.
Yeah, these guys are really beautiful.
This is quite a nice one.
I already picked this species about a month ago in a different forest uh where the season is a bit more ahead. So now I will show you some footages from the previous month.
Check this out.
Today is Friday, the 27th of March, 2026.
And here are my first mushrooms to pick this season.
These are early morels, also called wrinkled timble morels or some people call them false morels. It's vera bohemica.
They are edible, but some people might be allergic to these. So, I only recommend to be very care careful if you want to try them. I cannot recommend them for eating in general to everybody.
There are a couple more. This is a big one. I will try to take a picture of it.
And here are all of those which I have found around this single tree.
Let's pick another group.
Quite the big one.
They are so well camouflaged.
I took a picture of this one.
I believe there are a few more around me. I'm just unable to see them right now.
eight pieces from this group.
This is my third visit of this spot this spring. I was here two weeks ago when I only found two early morals which were very tiny.
One week ago, it was more of them and little bit bigger.
And today is the first day when I want to pick some of them.
They are masters of camouflage. I always need to be very careful when I'm walking here because I don't want to step on any of them.
I pick also the smaller ones today because the weather became very windy and strong dry wind can quickly dry them out.
I don't know how the season will continue, but we'll see.
There are many more around.
Of course, I had to do one pass before I started recording because I wanted to build a little bit of overview about where they are so I can find them when recording.
Let me know in the comments if you have noticed any which I missed, which is very likely to happen.
I was also talking about it in my video last year where Pa Bohemikica name is from the Bohemia region.
I am in this region now.
It's mostly Czech Republic.
And check people call these mushrooms check ducklings.
I think there was a bigger one. I can see that.
Here it is.
A really beautiful big one.
Here you can see some mushrooms in my textile bag.
I would like to cook them probably with some wild garlic as well.
with some pasta.
I quickly wanted to show you my first morels of 2026, Morella vulgaris in Slovakia on 10th of April 2026.
And I wouldn't be able to find these without my friend who kindly took me to the location.
And now I want to show you the result of today's mushroom hunting on April 24th, 2026 in Czech Republic. As you can see, our little basket is full of beautiful verba wrinkled timble morel. And I hope you liked this video. If yes, then please hit the like button, subscribe to the channel if you're not subscribed already.
