Whenever I have a client going through heartbreak, I remind them of these six things because your brain is about to lie to you and your body is about to start down spiraling. And if you don't understand what's happening, you're going to turn one breakup into 6 months of unnecessary suffering. So, here we go. Number one, your brain is literally in withdrawal.
This isn't just emotional, it's neurochemical. You were getting hits of dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin from that person. And now they're gone, so your brain's like, uh, "Where's my supply coming from now?" That's why you're checking your phone like a lab rat and replaying memories like it's your job. You're not crazy, you're just detoxing. So, stop romanticizing it.
You're not in love right now, you're in withdrawal. Number two, you're addicted to the story, not the person. Be honest, you're not crying over who they actually were. You're crying over the version of them you built in your head, the future you imagined, the identity you had in that relationship. That's just your brain looping the same story and the same scenes over and over and over.
You're just rehearsing loss, you're not experiencing reality. So, interrupt the loop. Go bake cookies or design a landing page or send that email you needed to send, not to your ex, or write your mother a letter. Just break the rehearsal loop in your brain because every time you replay it, you're just wiring it deeper in. Number three, your body needs to move this, not your mind.
In other words, you can't think your way out of heartbreak. You have to move it out using your body. This is where acupuncture and breath and movement, and all of it comes in because that tightness in your chest and that pit in your stomach, that's stored activation inside your nervous system. So, go for a walk or lift something heavy or breathe like you mean it. 4-second slow inhale, 6-second extra long exhale because the grief of breakup stuck in your body, that becomes identity really fast. You don't want that. Number four, rejection is protection even if your ego hates that. I know you thought they were it.
So did everyone before you who got it wrong. Listen, your prefrontal cortex, it's offline right now and your amygdala, your brain's threat center, it's loud. So, everything feels like loss, but zoom out. If someone can leave you, they were not aligned with you and that's not philosophy, that's physics because the universe matches frequency every time, not potential. So, yeah, it hurts right now, but it also filtered something out that wasn't built to last.
Number five, you're about to upgrade if you don't collapse here. This is the moment that most people shrink. They get needy, they chase, they text paragraphs that definitely should have stayed in the drafts folder. Don't be that guy.
This is where your identity can shift, you can upgrade because you either reinforce abandonment patterns or you build self-trust. So, sit your ass down and feel it. Don't fix it, don't numb it, be with it. That's how transformation actually happens. If you handle this right, this breakup won't just heal you, it will actually level you up.
