AWN Statewide Forecast for Wednesday Morning, May 6, 2026Added:
It's time for your statewide Alabama weathercast.
It's Wednesday, the 6th of May. This is James Span. Some very active weather over the next 24 hours. Potential for strong to severe storms, heavy rain, maybe some flooding issues. So, a lot to talk about this morning. Let's begin with some of the views coming from the region's Skyam network. This is coming from Florence, the campus of the University of North Alabama. And we're zooming into that line of storms that is moving into Florence. Uh nothing severe this morning, but the line of storms is producing very heavy amounts of rain, a lot of thunder, and lightning. Uh so for those of you in the Tennessee Valley, you'll have the chance of rain this morning into this afternoon. For most of the state, the better chance of rain will be coming this afternoon and tonight. And that's when the storms could possibly be strong to severe.
That's coming from downtown Decar. The sky there is cloudy. Some rain is falling to the north over parts of Limestone County. This is coming from Monoseno Mountain in Huntsville. Uh the sky cloudy rain mainly over northern Madison County north of Huntsville early this morning. This is the view coming from Lake Gunnersville, Marshall County.
They got 67 degrees. The due points up to 60. Uh very rich lowle moisture in place across the state. Aniston early this morning. Calhoun County at 66°.
Downtown Birmingham, it's cloudy and 66.
The due points up to 62. Uh the air should be pretty unstable today. Later today across the central and southern counties of the state. The Tuscaloosa due points up to 64. Temperature 69.
That's coming from the campus of the University of Alabama.
Montgomery again those due points are up in the middle 60s. When you see those type due point values in early May, that's kind of a red flag, meaning the air is ripe for thunderstorms. That's coming from the campus of Troy University. The sky cloudy in Pike County. We'll check downtown Mobile.
Check out that due point 70. And that uh that's the air that will be moving northward today. Air temperature 72.
We'll go to the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. This is coming from Fair Hope early this morning. Same thing, low7s. The due point sitting at 70. And we'll wrap up the tour this morning on the Skyam network at Gulf Shores. Same thing, 72 over 70. The sky is cloudy, but they do not have rain across South Alabama at this point. So, we have an approaching cold front and an approaching upper trough. All of that setting the stage for active thunderstorms later today and tonight. Uh there's a look at the storms coming into the northwestern corner of Alabama. Uh and some light rain near the Tennessee state line. We'd note Memphis under a flash flood warning early this morning and we could see some flash flooding issues across Alabama. I really think for the Tennessee Valley, Athens, Decar, the Scholes, Huntsville, Scottsboro, your main threat will be from heavy rain and flooding with a better chance of severe storms south of the Tennessee River today. So, the bottom line is we've got rain and storms ahead. Uh severe storms are possible as early as this afternoon over the northern and western counties of the state. And again, the rain will be heavy at times. The storm should be very efficient rain producers. Mostly 60s on the board to start the day. Highs this afternoon. And the Tennessee Valley will be in the 70s. That's because of rain and thankfully the air should be somewhat raincooled and stable there.
But for the rest of the state, highs in the 80s. Very unstable conditions this afternoon. So we have a level three out of five enhanced risk of severe storms for parts of central, west, and southwest Alabama. The orange on that map. And that's where the better chance of tornadoes will be uh this afternoon and tonight. Some of the cities in the enhanced risk would include Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Pel City, Silicaga, Caller, Clanton, Centerville, Brent, Marian, Greensboro, Utah, York, Livingston, Demopoulos, Lynon, and Butler.
Surrounding that, understand we've got a big level two out of five risk over the northern twothirds of the state. that's been expanded. A level two out of five risk all the way down to uh Evergreen and Eupfalla and a level one out of five risk down to Mobile and Dothan. And then tomorrow morning after 7:00, there could be a few strong storms over South Alabama. A level one out of five risk in the green there. Kind of a lowend threat, but again, maybe some strong storms for South Alabama tomorrow morning as the front pushes through. But whoa, Nelly, check out these numbers.
Goodness gracious. the the rain valid through Wednesday of next week. Uh parts of South Alabama with potential for 5 ines of rain. Wow, we need this. I know that it's not necessarily convenient, but we really do need this. This is extremely beneficial rain and this will break the back of a drought if we see numbers like that. Uh North Alabama, many spots with 3 in Dothan, Mobile 2 and 1/2 in.
So, let's go through the timing. So, this is where we are now. And again, you can see those storms near the Tennessee state line. Uh during the early afternoon hours, new storms begin to form in that unstable air. And uh it looks as if we could see severe storms now as early as 1 2 3:00 this afternoon over parts of central and west Alabama.
So we've adjusted the timing for an earlier start to that severe weather window. And again, that's 3:00. And of course, the radar will not look exactly like that, but something like that. So 7:00 this evening just a big batch of rain and storms. Now is the main tornado threats going to be in any isolated storms ahead of that line within the line itself. The main concern damaging straight line winds and possibly some hail and again some very heavy rainfalling as that line comes through and it's going to be a slow process.
That's midnight tonight. Now in the Tennessee Valley, the air cool and stable. No chance of any severe storms there. Uh the better chance of any severe storms at midnight well to the south of Interstate 20. And then overnight at 6:00 tomorrow morning, one last batch of storms coming through. And then by 10:00 tomorrow morning, most of the storms over South Alabama. And again, there's a lowend risk of severe storms over South Alabama tomorrow morning. And then by 3:00, still raining around Dothan and the southeastern part of the state, but the bulk of the rain moves out quickly. That's tomorrow night at 9:00. All of Alabama totally rain-free.
And then Friday morning looks dry. Maybe a few spotty showers over South Alabama, but the latest guidance suggesting a wave could form on that stalled front that could bring some rain back into South and even central Alabama by Friday night and Saturday. So, let's put it together. Here's a look at our 7-day forecast. First off, for the northern part of the state, rain and storms through tonight. Heavy rain. Storms could be severe.
Tomorrow, most of the day dry, the better chance of rain. Tomorrow, shifting into South Alabama. Friday looks mostly dry. Same thing Saturday for North Alabama. The better chance of rain Saturday over the southern half of the state. And then Sunday, another trough coming in with a good chance of showers and storms. Small chance of a shower Monday morning. And then we're dry Tuesday. South Alabama, spotty showers and storms this afternoon and tonight. The more widespread rain after midnight tonight into tomorrow morning.
And then Friday and Saturday, it's not going to rain all day, but uh it looks like the better chance of rain could be Friday night, maybe into Saturday morning. Then Sunday, another trough, a good chance of showers and storms, maybe into Monday morning, and then finally a totally dry day by Tuesday of next week.
That's the Alabama update this morning on the Alabama Weather Network.
