Cornock bypasses the performative nature of modern sustainability by grounding environmental stewardship in the raw, functional logic of traditional farming. It is a poignant reminder that true conservation is a daily labor of observation and resourcefulness, not just a collection of buzzwords.

FARMER P'S YELLOW TRAILER GETS IT'S FIRST OUTING THIS YEARAjouté :
Right. Oh god, I've done it again. I said right. Oh, how many times can I say right in one video?
Okay, I'm starting this video by saying okay rather than right. I hadn't realized, but I start most of my videos by saying, "Right, right. Right. We're going to do this. Right. We're going to do that." Someone pointed out in my in the comments the other day and said, "You keep saying, "Right, and it's really annoying. Right." Well, the thing is, I can't help that. That's just how I speak when I do stuff. And if I've been doing that for donkeyish years, you'd have to look back on my videos to see how long I've been doing it for. I'm not going to suddenly change, am I? So, unfortunately, if you don't like me saying right at the start of a video, you better write off. Uh, right. I did it without thinking that. Right. I'm I'm down here to collect a yellow trailer, a farmer peace trailer. Uh, well, it's my trailer, but you know, farmer piece. Uh, I'm going round and I'm collecting up wood. Some of it is collecting wood to burn. Some of it is collecting wood to uh put on the wood pile. Uh, because I go around the ponds and picking up the rails and things like that. So, we'll have a look in a minute. There's you can see a stack down there. Look, they left it down there a while ago. There it is.
That's ash logs. So, I'm going to collect those for firewood. But there might be some rails and stuff that need picking up on that pond there. And also over there. So, we'll have a look once I've got the trailer on. Right. All right.
Right. Oh god, I've done it again. I said right. Oh, how many times can I say right in one video? Okay. So, uh, I'm just going to put this trailer on, but I thought I'd walk in here. I just show you the barn owls are definitely in here cuz I put this soil in here last year.
This I made this up because it was getting a bit low. This is old subs soil I chucked in here. And so, this is fresh. And this is fresh. The dung, but these pellets are fresh. Look, that's a fresh barnal pellet. That wasn't there last year cuz it's on top of this soil.
And if I come along here, there's some more here as well. Look, there's that.
That's a big one there. Can you see that? And there's where it's been pooing. And so I'm guessing there's probably a barn owl in there. These are these are what they eat. This is the regurgitated remains of of field mice.
There should be some bones in there.
Look, I expect there's I can hear them crunching as I do it.
Look, can you see that? Can you see the bones?
There's a little bit of top of a skull there. There's a jawbone. Look.
What else? Isn't this is all this gray stuff's fur?
You need to really put pick this apart at home if you're going to do it properly. Look, there's another jawbone.
There's probably the I that's the skull in there. I'm trying trying to pull this apart with one hand is quite difficult.
I'm sure that's the skull.
There's a Is that a jaw bone? Yeah, I can see little teeth on it. Can you see little teeth?
That's focusing on, but there's certainly bones of the body. There's a jigsaw puzzle of a mouse.
So, anyway, they're they're in residence at the moment, I'd say. And there's some more evidence over here. They're obviously sitting on that beam up there because you can see the white poo. It's quite distinctive. And amongst it all is a barnal pellet. Look. So, that that's always a good sign. I'm really pleased about that. Um, and I imagine there might even they might even pick some mice up from down here because around here there's all sorts of things. Right, I'm going to put this on. Let's go and have a look at the ponds in a minute as well.
Here we go.
So, I'm just going to fill this up.
I am so paranoid about saying the word right now that I am going to have to keep saying okay.
Okay. Okay. So, we've got I just parked up there. You can see the the rails and stuff they've left which I've got to just get rid of. We're going to have a big bonfire along the on the maze ground cuz I don't want to burn this in the in the field where the cows are going to be walking cuz of the nails. But um some of these might be a reuse that one there. Look, you see this one here? Right.
What you can do with one like this possibly if I put it there, you can actually turn it upside down. So the bottom they always rot. Look at this. This is where it's rotting. Look, it's starting to go just there. It's probably fairly solid in there. It's just the outside going starting to go. Bearing in mind this bit sticks up like that. I found if you spin them around, put that in the ground, you can probably get another 10 years out of that because that bit the be solid enough for a rail to go in. If you put that back in the ground, that's going to rot out definitely fairly quickly. So, there's a possibility I could salvage that. Bearing in mind, we're talking getting on 10 quid for one of those. I'm quite happy to do that. Anyway, let's have a look down here.
They cleared out all this. It looks a lot better, doesn't it? Lovely bit of fencing. They did a really good job on the fencing. Nice and tidy.
Um God, you can see the water line's dropped though. Look. Can you see the water line on there? That's where it was. Look how much it's dropped since they were I'm sure it was that level when they came. You couldn't see any of this before. They cleared this out. Lot more sunlight on the pond. It's lovely actually. And I'm going to make sure I trim this down with a headge trimmer now to keep this down so that the light does get in there. That's what's important.
You need light in there. But also you want some sort of cover cuz you can see I mean there's bird poo there quite possibly that is barnal poo and they've flown from there. Look. Um so you you need uh you know those big birds like a barnal need somewhere to stay and somewhere to perch. They're not going to perch on a hedge. They do need these big trees. So you got to have you got to have some purpose um some cover like that. So they didn't take it all out.
Right. There's a couple more stakes down here.
What are these like? Again, these might be these might be salvageable.
Yeah, they look quite good actually. I think I probably replaced a few. Yeah, they're they're fine. I can reuse those.
Someone's got a split. Oh, look at the ants.
Look at the ants in that climy.
And they got their babies there as well.
Look at that.
Oh, I'm not putting I'm not putting those on my shoulder. They'll flipping get down my back, won't they?
Right. Oh god, I said right again.
We must be up to half a dozen rights by now, mustn't we? Right, right, right, right, right. He's all right. Half a day.
Little dodgy maybe underneath. He's all right. Do you remember that song? Who sang that? God, what was the name of them? They they had a funny name. That was uh during the peak of minder back in the mid or early 80s. There was a for daily little dodgy baby underneath. He's all right. But who sang it? You tell me in the comments if you know. You have to be a certain age to remember that song cuz it's not like it's going to be played anymore. It was just literally a one. That was a novelty tune. And uh talking novelty tunes, you notice they disappeared, haven't they? When I was growing up, there was always novelty tunes in the charts. There was various ones. Uh Star Treking, you remember that? Star Treking, Cross the Universe, and then you had like the Funky Gibbon with the goodies, although I think they had a few hits. Um and then you had the Birdie song. Uh you don't have those sort of I don't Well, saying that, I don't really know what goes on with the charts anymore. I don't think anyone does, do they? We ain't got top of the pops any more top of the pops. And the world's gone so diverse with millions of charts. Anyone can How can you keep a track on it, but we don't seem to have those novelty songs.
There was one called the streak, wasn't there? Call him the streak.
That's going back in the 70s, bit before my time. And then there was like Brian and Michael, matched up men and matched up cats and dogs. Um that that was one day, but you don't have these kind of like hits like that that were sort of novelty. Mr. to blobby and all that sort of stuff. They sort of it sort of dies. Shame really. I think I think music and stuff was a lot more fun back in in my era. I Every generation says that, don't they? Every generation thinks they had the best tunes. But I think we did. You couldn't beat a band like Madness. Really, could you?
We still had the oldies like the Beatles and stuff and the Stones if you wanted them. Whereas I don't know what kids listen to now. But that's the whole point, isn't it? You become a dinosaur, you move on. The kids come up with their own stuff. But my kids, my kids don't really listen to music. I watch a bit of football, but I was really into music. I had big singles collection and stuff and uh it seems like that's all gone now. I don't know. Who am I to know? Right, I'm just sitting here watching the world go round around. Right, there's three on there. I don't know. They're a bit ropey.
Maybe I'll salvage them. They They'd be all right for sort of certain places, certain places where you're thinking, "Oh, I don't need to be there for very long." But I'll load this up, then we'll go So, what I've done, I'm I'm dividing the pile. This is burning. This is possible salvage. There's a big steak there, which doesn't seem anything wrong with that other than just getting that.
Timber is so expensive now, you can't really afford to waste it. Right, let's get to the next pond.
We're going to go around all three ponds and then once I've got loaded up, I've got a load more wood from the orchard where I took some wood down around a round an apple tree. So, I've got various amounts of wood to take with me plus a load of trimmings and stuff. And then basically a big bonfire. Hurry. Hurry. You probably come for that. Who doesn't like a bonfire?
Right, coming up to the second pile.
This one is timber for firewood.
I'm going to use that. I think that's mostly ash. So, I'm going to have a look at that. There's a lovely bit of timber here. This is all ash. Look at that.
Perfect. That's lovely wood. I think I'm not sure whether that's ash. Is that very gnarly piece of ash that is? It is.
Oh, it's a bit rotten in the middle. Uh but not rotten enough to be bad for wood. So uh that's that's going on. It's come out of the hedge there. That they took it out just in there. You can see the stump. Um what a gorgeous day though, isn't it?
You know, I know I moan about the winter. I really struggle with winter and January particularly this year was really bad. But when you get to this time of year, I was saying to the boys the other day, I said, "This is wonderful. This is the best job in the world, isn't it?" When you get to this time of year, spring, everyone feels better for spring. But do you know what?
If you're out in a field like this, wow, gorgeous, isn't it? Gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. And and we're not even into early spring yet properly because the trees have only just started to sort of bud. You got that one there. That one there, that field maple's just coming out now, but not really quite out. The horse horn's a little bit out. Uh, a bit of blackthorn in the hedges.
You can see down the bottom there. I don't know whether it's really properly out yet or whether it's just gone.
Actually, might have gone over a bit.
Um, down there. Look. But, uh, wow. Good to be alive day, isn't it? We all need those. You just need to get out and about. I think if you're feeling a bit down and you need to get out and about, especially this time of year. You just don't feel bad just being out. Blue bells are up. That's fantastic. Right, let me just load this lot up. I think this one's going to have to go. Oh, where am I going to put that in the middle? More on that side cuz that'll be unload. So, I'll unload that lot first.
That'll go on the wood pile. That'll go on the steak reconditioning pile. This will go on the burning pile. Eventually, we're going to get more burning stuff, but at the moment, this is priority.
Let's put this on. Right, let's have a look.
Tada. Tada. There we go. Right, that's loaded up. Grass is dying a bit there.
Look, I should have moved these a week ago, really. So, we've got that load, another load on there. It's a good lot.
Nice bit of firewood for me next winter.
The ash will be sawing up later in the year. Let's get on up.
We'll just go and look at the other um I'm going to look at the the other I'm losing my words now. Let's go look at the other pond. We'll look at that one. Then I've got to get back to the farm. I've just been called. Got some work to do. Uh always got work to do.
And then we'll probably get on get on with clearing the rest of stuff tomorrow and then um have the bonfire. I kind of keep I'm kind of like trailing the bonfire like it's the best thing ever.
It is actually quite fun having a bonfire. Right, let's go.
Right, let's get out and have a look at this. Right, there are some big logs left here, but that's deliberate.
This is a much better job. They've done a great job on this. Before it was like a bit ramshackle. We'll have a look. It used I fenced to there and then and then it was just left with a bit of an opening and this was all leaning over and it was all rubbish. Um and this is much better. Oh, I think I might have that post out there. They they asked me what I want to do with the willow logs. I didn't really want them as firewood. They're not great firewood and they actually work quite well to be left here to rot down. They'll be good for beetles and stuff like that. Um, they've done a nice job on here. Tid this up. I will have to try and keep this down. Lovely bare fencing. Stop the cattle getting in. So much clearer. Look at that. I can't believe there's a pond here before.
The willow was a bit of an issue.
You can see the willow in the back.
It's gone right over. So, it's kind of like there wasn't much they could do with that. Can you see? Obviously, the roots have pulled out this side and it's leaning on the bank. Now, they've taken the weight off the crown or the top there. So, hopefully it'll grow up and regenerate a little bit this side and maybe balance out a little bit better.
Um, but I didn't want to lose that really and want a bit of cover again.
So, this is good. So, at the moment it hasn't greened up and and it will green up. So maybe this year there will be a little bit of wildlife habitat loss. But it's surprising if you come back down here by next spring, this will all be green. I'm sure of it. Right, let's have a look. Oh, there's a nice little log there. I'm not going to leave those. Not when someone's actually cut them.
Look at those. They'll just be right for the fire. There's a couple of logs over there which I'm going to get. Right, let's leave that. I'll just get that one post out and then we'll be gone.
That bit I've just put a couple of those little logs in the back. I haven't got time to get to the other pond just chuck that on. The grass is really starting to take off now.
Look at that.
I don't know which order I'm uploading these videos in. By the time you see this, you might have the the cow video might be already out of them going out.
They're not out yet, but I might, as soon as I fil, I might put it up cuz everyone wants to see it. Uh, someone said to me, why don't you turn your cars out earlier and then reduce the amount of silage you need to make uh let them race in the field rather than put in the clamp. But the reason for that is if we get a late spring and it's really wet, that won't work. And I can't predict what happens next year. So, if I let them out early this year and they graze more of the silage field and then I haven't got the grass for next spring and we have a really wet spring, then I'm screwed. So, I it's better to keep them in. I'm going to keep them until I run out anyway, which isn't very far away. But I rather keep them to midappril and serve a bit in the field and know that I can keep um I can turn them out if I have a real problem here in this area where we we can't predict the wet rainfall and it the guys had a devil and corn when I get there at least a good couple of weeks for me for sure.
Right. Just shut this gate and we'll be right going up to what is my favorite or one of my two favorite ponds on the farm. I think we got pon and a half. And this is one of my two favorite ones. This one, the one down the pylon down there. This one down the pilot has got a little island on it. And I made that I got some make when they had a digger. I like a little island. But this is this is a nice pond because it's always got water in it. And there's more hands on there.
You see frost.
So we're right by it now.
Probably nothing there now. Oh, I can see a more head. It's just disappearing into the It's gone. There. So, this here's the firewood.
Look at that. It's beautiful. We get another look at that in a minute. Here's the firewood. The woody fire. Again, a bit of a mix.
Here we are then. I just I just by the time I got out that mohen had gone round couple of stepping stones here. That mohen had gone around the back there. I reckon they probably got a nest in the back. But this interesting now the sunlight's on here. The blanket weeds come back. That wasn't there before. I mean likes uh sunlight cuz it can photosynthesize and spread. But hopefully that'll disappear in time. It did last time. It came and it went and I think the mohens will eat some of it.
But it's all looking a lovely area. The blue bells are just coming out over there. Look.
Come on, focus. Where's the blue bells?
He's trying to focus. Anyway, blue bells are over there. Oh, there's a little birdie. I think that was a a ren just going by there.
Can hear the birds sweetening, can't you? Plenty of flies, which is good for the birds. Not sure about how long that ash will last. These are really old and if they do another 10 years, that's good going. They're sort of heading over to the end of their lives. Two willows.
But there's willows. That's a willow that's regenerated at the back. So, we got something right. Anyway, more firewood.
That might be I don't know whether these are savable. That one might be all right. It looks a bit st at the top. All right, slow up.
All done. Me yellow trailer's got stuff in it. Now you might you might be wondering why I bother saving those reusing those sort of secondhand uh post cuz you think well what's the point last a few years but I have actually found a very good use for them. So, you don't want to you reuse secondhand post if you've got somewhere that's um you know you're looking at permanently fencing longterm. But what I found is you know as you well know I plant trees around the farm.
Uh what I've done with like the orchard I found after 10 years the posts are generally quite rotten and they start needing to be replaced. And now the tree isn't quite ready to have the rails taken down around it. So what I end up doing is that's where I use the secondhand post because they've probably got a 5year life left in them. Um and it means that by the after that that's them 15 years of fencing around an apple tree and that's long enough for me to take the rails away and the cows won't probably hassle them. So So I kind of use them as sort of like a halfife if you like. And and that's where secondhand stuff has come in handy. And I' I've proved that cuz I've done it quite a few times and and it's it kind of like gives me a bit of satisfaction because you sort of think to yourself, well, that saved me a few quid and I've used something that I didn't quite know what to do with. So all those um all those secondhand sort of states that I've got will get used at some point.
Um, and what I do is I'll dip the engine in engine oil so that they're actually okay for something.
See you in a bit.
There we go.
