A nominal increase in minimum wage may not translate to meaningful improvements in workers' purchasing power when essential living costs like fuel prices are considered; for example, a proposed 30% increase in Nigeria's minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000 only provides approximately 20 extra liters of petrol, which must cover all essential expenses including food, rent, school fees, utilities, and healthcare.

₦100,000 Minimum Wage Sounds Big Until Petrol EntersAñadido:
Governors are now discussing 100,000 naira minimum wage.
Discussing.
Petrol did not discuss.
Petrol moved to 1,532 naira per liter.
Food did not discuss.
Transport did not discuss.
Only salary is still waiting for meeting minutes. Nigeria's current minimum wage is 70,000 naira.
The governors are proposing 100,000.
On paper, that sounds like progress.
30,000 naira more.
>> [clears throat] >> A whole increase.
Very good.
Now, let us take it to the filling station. According to the NBS, average petrol price in April was 1,532 naira 93 kobo per liter. 70,000 naira buys about 45 liters. 100,000 naira buys about 65 liters. So, the big proposed increase gives a worker roughly 20 extra liters of petrol. 20 extra liters before food, before rent, before school fees, before light bill, before hospital, before the small emergency that always arrives at the end of the month. This is the real story.
Salary moves by negotiation. Petrol moves by market. Food moves by transport. Rent moves by landlord. But, the worker moves by prayer.
Which is not an economic policy. The governors say they want a wage structure that is fair to workers and sustainable for government.
Fair.
Sustainable.
Good words.
But, the market does not wait for good words.
The market has already priced the worker out. Come to your state. How many liters of petrol does 1 month salary buy where you are? We are not asking for opinions today. We are collecting receipts. This is PK News Check.
