Scarification is a lawn renovation technique that removes moss, thatch, and debris by mechanically cutting through the lawn surface, which stimulates new grass growth and improves lawn health; the process requires multiple passes over the lawn, followed by applying compost and seed, and daily watering for about a week to ensure successful germination and recovery.

Lawn renovation. How much did I charge? Brutal scarification.Added:
Good afternoon everybody.
So today's task is we're going to scarify this lawn and it's pretty bad to be honest.
Um the owners put lawn sand down and scalped it with a lawn mower. But just give you an example.
black paving underneath that.
You can see here, look, it's just moss all over it.
But yeah, this is going to be a brutal one again, I think. And I've bought myself some a new piece of kit, a proper scarifier.
350 quid.
I've used it once on my own lawn, which just happens to be over that fence.
If I can show you quickly. So, I did mine last week, and I just composted it and seeded it. So, there you go.
It should be uh should be up in about a week.
So, we're going to turn this into that hopefully.
Mine wasn't that bad cuz I did mine last year as well, but this has never been done. So, the owner tells me and it's full of ant hills as well. So, we need to get all through all that. And there's dips in the ground there.
Yeah, it's quite bad to be honest.
But let's have a go. Yeah, full of antills here. Look.
But yeah, all the moss growing over the brick edging.
Right, let's get on with it. Let's have a Let's have a go. See how we get on Well, there's some stuff coming off this. Just look at that.
Well, that's the first pass done. Just need to clear it all up now. I'm definitely going to fill that book bag.
There is tons of it. This is bad.
When it hits a antill just rips it all up, which is good because it'll flatten it out.
All right, I'm going to um clean up now. It's going to take longer to clean up than it does actually to scarify. What did that take?
12 minutes to do all that.
So, the machine's good.
There's no point using the box. I'd have to stop every two minutes. 2 seconds.
There's that much of it.
All right, let's clean up.
So, that's two of the sections done.
I've just got that final bit to do there. But I've started um peeling back the edges on this side.
Just makes it look a little bit better.
This is going to need another session anyway.
Um, what I'm going to do actually is finish clearing off all that and then I'm going to concentrate on this first one. Just going to have another go over and let's say I've done all the edging and we'll just slowly go around the garden. I'm only here for two hours today. So, my plan is, yeah, we've done the first one and I can get this one sort of up to scratch and then the owner can get some compost and seed and then maybe next time I can put that down. At least we've got um the job underway.
But yeah, it's bad.
So, I'm just going to clear this one up.
And uh redo this little L shape.
Well, that's it for this one.
That's my two hours nearly done.
But that machine is great for any high spots like here where all the antels was. It just takes them out.
So there was loads there. There was loads all down there.
So need to speak to the owner now. He's not here fortunately. But need to get some compost on this bit and some seed.
And then next time we can do these.
So that's had one scarifier. This has had four.
So you can see the difference.
And obviously we've cleaned all the edging up as well. Um cuz believe it or not, there's brick edging underneath that.
So, we'll do that next time.
Yeah, quite pleased with that. That'll be um quite good once we get some compost and seed on it.
Okay, I shall do the complete video on this.
So, I won't load this onto YouTube until it's all done. And then what I can do cuz I only live there. [laughter] That's my garden. I can uh do an update of how it's coming on.
As long as the owner waters it is.
Right. Slight pause on this one then until we come next time.
Good morning everyone. Welcome back. So this is part two of this brutal scarifying session.
So it's a week since I was last here and we did that. So I had four passes over this these this little square and this L has only had one.
So we're going to clear this today and that one. But I'm going to start off this morning. I'm going to expose this brick edge in again.
So the machine doesn't hit it. It's not so bad on the far side. Just a little bit have a quick scarify.
So not going to say too much and just get on with it.
Let's go for it.
I've gotten rid of all the ant hills here. Um I think I'll give it one more go just before I put seed down just to ruffle the soil up. But there's there's no grass in it.
A little bit there.
A little bit there.
It's going to be simmered on this final nail. So, we're going to do that now.
And then uh probably get some seed and compost down today. I think well, I'll give this another going over.
Might get some done. I got to work backwards on this day. So, if I can get this done, I'll get the seed and compost down.
Right, let's go again with a scarifier.
Okay, so that's that done.
I'm going to do one more pass with the collector on now just to get any final bits up. And I'm think I'm going to get some seed done.
What a That's three bolt bags over there. Look, the owner has actually has actually emptied them too or started to empty them. So, they're not full now.
And the one I just filled is about three quarters full.
But there you go. I'm gonna get on with this now.
Pretty brutal, but definitely needed.
Um, I'll do the the L first.
So, I'll do it right back so you can see.
Okay, that's that done.
I'm going to get some seed on this one and this one hopefully. But I've only got 10 bags of compost.
So, we'll see how far it goes. If we can get it all done, brilliant. But I I don't know. We'll see. So, yeah, that's the next task.
This one and that one.
Okay, that's that done. Just put a bit of water on, but I'll get the owner to put the sprinkler on tonight.
Needs to be done every day or it will not come out. The ground is so dry. And you'll probably seeing that in the video, all the dust that came up.
twice a day if you can do it. Well, I'll speak to him when he gets home.
It's over to him now.
But that took seven bags and I've got this L shape to do. So, I think that L was five bags.
I've only got three left. So, excuse me. Um, I'll have to get two more.
There you go. I shall film this final bit when I come back, but I need some compost.
But it's looking good.
Okay, so this is this garden finished.
I've just uh seeded and composted this final L and give it a good watering.
This is 5 days later from these two and uh we just got to give it time now.
Probably middle of next week the seed will be up here. Unfortunately, the evenings are quite cold in the UK at the moment.
Um we're only averaging 12 max in the day and it's dropping down to about 3 at night. So, might just knock the seed back a bit, but apparently it's going to warm up next week, so we'll see.
But yeah, I that's my garden just over that fence. So, I can just stand on the on the side and uh have a look when when this is coming up hopefully mid next week for these two.
Okay, I'll keep you updated.
