This video shares a personal testimony from a Navajo individual who was initially kept out of school for two years because his family believed he was better suited for traditional livestock work. The speaker explains that many Native American communities historically resisted formal education, arguing that their children already possessed sufficient knowledge to provide for themselves through traditional means. Even respected leaders like Manuelito sent their children to boarding schools, though both died, yet this tragedy did not discourage the broader community's gradual acceptance of formal education as an important learning opportunity.

Taken to School #nativeamerican #navajoAñadido:
As I remember, they the time that I became of age to attend school, they didn't want me to go to school.
>> [music] >> They said, "You know, this boy is good with the livestock. He's good with the sheep and the goats and all of the other animals that we have." So, for 2 years, they kept me out of school. And then finally, they did finally find out that I hadn't been attending school. And so, they came and and [music] captured me and hauled me off to school.
It was not a good experience for me in many ways, [music] but that experience I needed. But the thing about learning is that our people they didn't [music] want their children in the in the past history to go to school because they were told, "Your children need to go to school so they can learn how to provide for themselves." Our people's argument was they already have things to learn and things to know that will provide for them. But even Manuelito, as a leader, he sent his two boys to school, some boarding school back east, and they both died. But even that did not discourage our some of our people until understand that learning was a very important thing.
