The Tulsa Race Massacre of May 31, 1921, was a deliberate attack on Black Wall Street—the most prosperous Black community in America at the time, which had built its own economy through 191 businesses, two hospitals, and other institutions during segregation. The massacre, which destroyed 35 city blocks and killed an estimated 300 people, was not about a single incident but about white establishment terror at Black economic power. Despite 70 years of official denial and the naming of the event as a 'riot' rather than a massacre, the story has been preserved through oral history and survivor testimony, including that of 111-year-old Mother Randle, the last living witness.
