A strict vegan diet can provide sufficient protein for maintaining strength, fitness, and energy levels, as demonstrated by someone who became vegan 6 months before starting a fitness journey and successfully completed physically demanding labor all day while maintaining high energy and muscle mass.

Hello, hello, hello. I want to talk to you guys about one of the worst excuses I hear people give me for not being vegan is that they can't get enough protein from plants. So, I want to say to you, you think about this the strongest land animals in the world. You think about horses and ox and elephants, rhinos, uh hippos. I know some of them eat a little bit of meat, but most of these animals are more or less always or at least 95% vegan. Where do you think protein comes from? Do you think that uh animals are just like magical protein producers? No, I'm not going to lie. It's easier to get protein from animals than it is from vegetables, but um you know, I'm certainly not wasting away.
People who know me know that in the last couple of years, I've been on very much a mission to make myself as fit as possible. And uh but what a lot of people don't know who haven't sort of done the math is that I actually became vegan um about 6 months before I started on this fitness journey. So all of my gains have been as a 100% strict vegan.
And I certainly don't feel like I'm losing any strength, guys. I've been doing this. It's about 4:00 in the afternoon. I've been doing this since about 8:30 this morning. I've had one break. Um, and that's it. And I'm still full of energy. I'm still full of energy. I'm planning to go for at least another hour. And uh I've been digging.
And this particular place where I'm digging was a dump for rubble. So, it's probably the hardest kind of digging.
It's all rocks and concrete because uh we're going to build a uh a terrace here. And I'm telling you guys, I'm feeling like I'm not even tired. I'm not even tired. I'm literally only going to go home. Uh because, you know, at some point you have to go home, right?
Supermarket shopping to do. So, we're going to walk two of our dogs. So, uh you know, apart from that, I'd probably stay here till 9:00 in the evening. I'm I'm not even joking, guys. I'm not even tired really. Um, and this is what I've been doing all day. Um, as I say, since this morning, I've already pulled out three trees from here. There were three trees here. I've cut them down and pulled them out. And then I've already dug down about 2 feet. Um, I've probably got about another I reck, uh, build a patio. And this is it.
Whenever you hear people talking about health and stuff like that, it's just not true. I get more than enough protein. You know, you could simply drink protein shakes. It's that simple.
People talk about this being complicated. How is it complicated to mix some protein powder into some water and drink it? It's not complicated.
Being a vegan is easier. It's easier, guys, than being a carnivore. Um, people say to me, "Oh, how do you make meals without meat?" And I got to tell you, it is extremely difficult. Right? What I have to do is I have to prepare the exact same meal that you do, except I don't have to go to the trouble of buying, storing, thoring, preparing, and cooking the meat. That's it. It's easier and it's cheaper. And it's cheaper. And uh I just, you know, people say it's anecdotal. It's just you who feels good.
You know, I knew someone whose cousin's uh friend died from being a vegan. Look, you know, you have to look after your diet no matter what kind of diet you're on, okay? It doesn't matter whether you're a vegan or a carnivore. And I'm really sick of being uh, you know, told to watch my diet by people who um, you know, eat at McDonald's and eat junk food and don't watch their macros the way I do. I control every single calorie that goes into my body and I watch all of my macros. You know what I mean? If you're a vegan and you go out and just still eat lots of processed food, you eat lots of McDonald's vegan burgers, yet kind of vegan pizzas and stuff like that and that kind of like uh pretend meat. I don't have a problem with the pretend meat, by the way. As I say to people, uh you you know, I'm a vegan. Do I like the taste of bacon? Yes. Do I like the taste of cheese? Yes. Uh, but I prefer that uh no edible has to die for that fleeting uh bit of taste that I get. And you know, I used to eat the um the so-called fake or faux uh the faux meats like the Beyond Burgers and all that. I used to eat there, but I don't I don't I don't eat them anymore. Uh and I just I just don't miss them because, you know, I was speaking to someone on Facebook the other day. He was saying, "Oh, how how do you how do you get by without eggs? How do you get by without cheese?" It's easy for me. I don't eat them because to me they're not food. Uh I don't think of animals as food. I think of animals as beings that we share the planet with who've got as much right to be here as we do. Uh I recognize the sentience in them. I've always all my life I've always been a dog lover.
Anyone who knows me knows that. I probably genuinely, you know, it's kind of a cliche, but I probably really really do prefer dogs to humans. And I can't remember. I think I was at the kettle where I was volunteering last year and they were having a barbecue and I just suddenly had this cognitive dissonance where I thought I I don't understand how we can be here supporting one kind of animal and just ignoring the other. And then I started looking at um you know Ed videos and Joey Carstrong videos which I highly recommend you do by the way. And I think after going down that rabbit hole it's very difficult not to be vegan. And as I've said before, the reason I don't say vegetarian is I think I think that being a vegetarian is is meaningless. It doesn't have any meaning to me. Um, dairy cows and chickens probably have it the worst of all farmed animals. So, you know, there's no need to come in the comments and say, "Oh, yeah, Tony, I'm a vegetarian." It doesn't mean anything to me. You still uh involved with and supporting um the abuse of animals in my opinion. Uh, but I get that we've all been brainwashed since we were children.
But that's really what I wanted to say.
I just wanted to to prove the point to you. I I mean, look at me. I'm not withering away, guys. And I'm telling you, I I am I am I'm so [ __ ] fit. I I you know, uh, if you'd have told me a few years ago, uh, that at 50, how old am I? 53, I'm nearly 54, that I'd be able to go out and labor all day long and just have this much body strength and this much range of motion and this much energy by the end of the day. just be feeling awesome and after doing a day's labor like this get up the next day I'm not even sore you know the other day I was sore but it was sunburn so uh sorry about that ladies I had to wear my t-shirt today but uh my whole back is is peeling off um but yeah I uh just really wanted to get that through to you guys you're not going to have any problem with protein and and in fact one thing I would say if you are vegan you probably are going to have to make sure that you do some resistance training whether it be hard work or some weights um to to keep your muscle mass on. And you know, don't be don't be afraid to have a protein shake. Don't be afraid to, you know, have some protein shakes. It's healthy healthy for you. They taste pretty good and it's a simple way to get that protein into you without like having to eat tons and tons of beans and things like that. But don't let the uh meat industry fool you with their lies about how much protein you need. Uh, I aim for I aim for about 140 gram of protein a day. Okay? And, uh, if you're not, you know, if you're not as active as I am, you you can even do with less than that. Um, obviously, you do have to watch it. Um, if you don't have enough, you can start to lose muscle mass, especially if you're in calorie deficit like I am, but that's also a choice. You don't have to be in a calorie deficit.
Um, but yeah, I I just really want to break through this illusion uh that vegans can't be healthy, can't be strong, can't maintain their protein levels. It takes you, you know, if you put the work in, I I could literally teach you how to watch your macros in a day. It's so easy. You get to a point where you just look at a meal, you know how many calories are in it, you know, you know the protein content, you know the carb content. Uh yeah, it's not difficult. It's not difficult.
You know what I mean? And and I my conscious is clear, guys. I I'm not involved uh directly where possible.
Look, um any vegan who says they're 100% not harming any animal is is killing themselves. Really, we all know that there is no such thing as 100%. Um, but what we're doing is minimizing the harm where possible and we're not deliberately being actively involved in the harm of animals. But anyway, this was my second break of the day and that's enough for me. I'm going to get back and do about another hour of uh pulling rocks out of soil in the Portuguese sun and feeling the better for it. Uh, go vegan for the animals.
Ciao.
