Join our Earth Sciences students on their field trip to St Michael’s Mount #earthscience

[00:00:00]So, today you're joining [music] us on our stage two residential field trip down in Southwest Cornwall. So, this forms a core part of our program.

[00:00:07][music] So, we have a module called the Earth's interior and resources. And so, we teach the students during the term of time about how the Earth works and in particular magmatic processes. [music] And so, now at the end of the term we bring the students out into the field so that they can see some [music] of these processes for themselves and start to understand the scale of these processes and link it into our understanding and the importance [music] of the geology of the Southwest. The benefit our students gain from seeing the rocks in the field is [music] that they can actually make their own observations. So, it also takes it from maybe some abstract principles about things which are happening deep beneath [music] our feet to actually being able to see the record of that in the rocks themselves. So, we do that by understanding the minerals that have formed, how the different crystals fit [music] together, and piecing together the information which allows the students to apply the knowledge from the lectures [music] and actually be able to sort of do the work for themselves.
