This video offers a striking meditation on the spatial tension between the living and the dead, where history literally paves the streets of a tiny Yorkshire village. It is a compelling reminder that our present is often just a thin layer atop a vast, crowded heritage.

You Can't Help But Walk On Graves In This VillageHinzugefügt:
Hi everyone. Welcome to Heptton Stall.
Um I thought I'd start by showing you the grave of Sylvia Pla. Sylvia Platt Pla and um and we'll go see the grave of David Hartley who was the leader of the Cragville Coiners.
Let's go.
So here she is. I've just been told the location by the very helpful man on a bench.
who asked a bunch of other questions.
So, this is Sylvia Pla.
Now she was um says born in 1932 died 1963 and she was an influential American poet, novelist, short story writer best known for her kind of confessional style and uh exploration of herself and also mental illness and um self-inflicted exit from this world, shall we say, uh from Boston originally.
Beautiful grave. Loads of uh notes by fans left for her, no doubt.
And uh she had a bit of a turbulent marriage with um Ted Hughes, who was also a poet.
Um, >> oh, >> he's asking that woman all sorts of questions now like he did me.
>> Um, Ted Hughes was pretty much in charge of her publications and uh probably a bit controlling of her herself and that's when she um >> shortly after the marriage ended unal alived herself.
Look, he's asking >> he's asking that woman loads of questions.
>> What do you do?
>> I don't like to say it because everyone >> see what you want to do.
Did you hear that?
>> He just said he's a filmmaker. He makes uh films for YouTube.
Not sure if I'm a I guess I'm a filmmaker.
Prefer that than YouTuber now. He also said Ted Hughes parents buried around here near this tree.
Um, can't see it though.
Ted was cremated and um had his ashes scattered in Dartmore, so he's not here.
Can't see any hues. I'm assuming the last name was Hughes.
Don't know if it was a maybe a stage name by him. Oh, look at that one. Tops.
>> No, can't see anywhere.
Oh, well, not that bothered anyway.
He's still talking about me over there.
He says, um, they upload it to YouTube and make loads of money.
I wouldn't say loads of money, but they make enough money for, uh, petrol and stuff like that.
So, let's check out the other church.
There are two. This is St. Thomas Abeck.
And then we'll go to uh have a look at St. Thomas the Apostle, I think. Or I don't know if this one's called both of them. I can't really remember. But I'll have a think while we go walk around.
Wow, look at this one.
It's called a weeping angel, is it? Just hanging on to the across Simpson Boyd. I think 1909 died 1909. Born 1862 Simpson Bose. Sorry.
That's such a cool monument, isn't it?
It's a bit overgrown here.
Not sure we'll be able to get in amongst it that well.
Oh, so I just remembered the the old church we're going to see is uh church of Thomas Abeck and this one is uh St. Thomas the Apostle built around 1850.
I like how uh these are laid inlaid into the uh cobbles.
Thomas Suckliffe.
So, we've got a lot of um Suckliffe families here, which was um the Yorkshire Ripper's name. He was a bit like a Jack the Ripper, more of a modern reincarnation that um not literally that um stalked this area looking for uh women and uh doing nasty things to them, shall we say.
Got some more of these inlaid ones and cobbles here. What sort of Dates have we got on these then?
1730 died 1747 or maybe 59.
Look at the view those houses have got.
I would love a view like that of the cemetery.
I'd have a live webcam going.
Major Wild died 1874 and Grace's wife.
Look at this big enclosure.
Someone very important.
probably can't see a way in.
This is for uh more suck cliffs.
John John Suckliffe died 1928.
So, these could have been relations to uh the Yorkshire Ripper, whose first name I can't remember. I think it's Peter.
We are live on the scene. Sometimes I forget stuff.
I have been here before. By the way, I do remember this. This is a pinnacle that fell from the top of the church.
These would have been on the corners of the tower.
It says, "Look, this pinnacle was struck down by lightning from the southwest corner of this tower on April the 5th, AD 18 75."
But that was uh But that made some that made a bit of noise, didn't it?
Imagine this falling from all the way up there, tumbling down in a storm.
done well to put it back together, haven't they?
Oh, wow. Look at the size of this.
There's my shoe for skill.
Joseph Hodgen.
John Hodgson, infant son of Joseph and Grace Hodgson.
Joseph Hodson, father of the above children who died September 13th, 1830 1871, age 41 years.
Grace Hodkins died 185.
A lot of infant deaths here. I'd usually um because of contaminated water in this area, which is a big problem. Got another uh suck cliff here.
Thomas or Jonas died 1862.
Um two infants of James and Grace Cliff, so they're next door. to the parents.
We'll see how deep we can get in, but I'm probably best off coming in the winter if I want to read every single grave because of all the um brambles and stuff.
Heartley family.
Thomas Hartley died 1916.
And then loads more over there which we can't get to.
More suckliffs.
Hannah. I know. Hannah would be a suckliff. Married to Henry Suckliffe.
Welcome to the Suckliff Cemetery.
There's the old church.
Go and have a look around that and find out the exact date. hopefully that it became abandoned.
That's what I've been doing recently. A bit of a bit of running, trying to get a bit healthier.
Well, unless he's just mugged someone.
I um I will be walking over graves in this video, so no complaining, please. It's just the way the cemetery is uh set out.
No complaining unless uh you're a ghost that's in the grave, then I accept it.
I'll show you here. Look why you can't help but walk on the graves.
I'm so unfit at the minute. It's uh unreal.
But we'll get it back.
So, it's kind of used as a path, a cheap paving method. Paving method.
Now, um David Hartley, the uh Craigville coin is buried around here somewhere.
I didn't find it last time, but we'll have a have a good look for it. Maybe this sign will tell us the exact dates of the uh when this place became abandoned or unusable.
Um 1847. Right. And here we've got amongst the notable gravestones of the old churchyard is that of David Hartley known as the known as King David, leader of the notorious Cragville coiners.
These counterfeiters were so successful they almost succeeded in destabilizing the country's currency.
So like the original Peaky Blinders, I guess.
Apparently he's always got loads of coins on his grave. So um let's have a look.
And um basically they used to when coins were like um real metal like silver and copper probably silver wasn't it or more gold even they um they used to trim scrape the edges off and uh create new coins from that which was genius.
Um there we go.
That is David Hartley.
David Hartley 1770 next to his name. So I'm guessing that's when he died. We've also got a WH in here. died 1789.
Uh Grace Hartley, his wife, also David Hartley, a grandson who departed this life 184.
So, I don't know which one he is. I'll put his dates on the screen for you. But there's all the coins left for him.
Pruden Heartley as well died 18 83.
And if I had a coin in my pocket, I would actually leave one. but pretty much cashless.
So, there's an old pub as well, I'll show you, where um the gang found one of their um one of the people who snitched on them and they uh threw him in the fireplace and put hot coals down his trousers and they passed away due to that. Let me just get the possible thumbnail lined up.
do like to do it live in the video so you can see it.
Maybe from a bit further away.
Get this tombstone in it.
Not sure.
Oh, what's this?
It's a little uh What is it? It's Velociraptor.
Don't know if it's got any significance or whether some kid dropped it or something. Maybe that's the thumbnail.
Dinosaur in the coins.
Welcome to Jurassic Cemetery.
Put him back before he bites me.
Right, let's go check out the church, which doesn't have a roof, but um plenty of cool stuff to see inside still. Let's go around the other side, actually, cuz there's people in it.
I've got the Jurassic Park theme tune in my head now.
There's people. Look.
I wonder why. Um, this one's special all on its own.
Like a tabletop.
seems to have a something stolen there, like a a metal plaque or something.
Wonder if it was a Craigville coiners stealing everything.
Look, they even stole the clock face.
these people's gardens actually back onto the cemetery which I'm super jealous of.
I could do um live videos from here if I lived here, couldn't I? Just in there chilling in the cemetery.
Some more big old slabs.
Another Sliff died 1924.
Maybe I'd move. Maybe I can move here.
just to do live videos.
It's only about an hour and a half from where I live anyway, so save the expense.
I don't think we got too much else going on around here. Just that person's garden. Look at that.
All the plant pots and graves.
Surprisingly well intact, isn't it?
could just Well, maybe it's more damaged than it looks because um they could have just put a roof back on it and it would have been all right, wouldn't it?
Memory of the Thomas family of Broadbottom and Hebdon Bridge. The east wall of this church was restored.
Something James Suckliffe Thomas in 1927.
All right, let's go in. Finally, look at this.
Again, we've got gravestones as the floor.
Don't know if they were in situ originally or whether they've just been moved here.
The floor would have been stone, wouldn't it? As a medieval church.
Sorry.
:00lock face.
So yeah, as I said, this was struck by lightning in about in in the 1840s.
What was it? 47 1847.
And uh these are the gravestones.
What a cool looking tower.
Got a little secret doorway there. But that was maybe external access to the tower for someone to come and uh ring the bells.
Still got the another window up there.
Look, stone window.
What an incredible place. And thank you to the people that put a lot of work into preserving it.
Look at the size of this one.
James Shackleton and James Suckliffe Shackleton.
1885.
Wonder how they actually got him here.
It must have been awesome cart, I'm guessing. Or I don't think you'd be able to carry this. maybe six men quickly.
It's absolutely incredible the size of it.
Here we got the altar.
Don't know if it's original. Probably not.
A little area here to look for your holy water.
dip your hands in and uh anoint yourself or whatever they do. I'm not massively religious, so uh I just like religious buildings and uh cemeteries.
You don't have to be religious to enjoy places like this.
Got this one from 1778.
Just initials I could literally spend all day here.
I've got another video to film.
Let's go this side door.
Go past. Where was he?
Oh, there he is. David Hartley again.
the opportunist thief and uh king and leader of the Cragville coiners.
So many people here, haven't we? I guess these would have been standing at some point in this over time they would have fallen over.
It's good you can actually see the full length of them. The bits that would be underground obviously without any uh writing on them.
Maybe not actually. Maybe some of them were quite tall.
Who knows? I'll have to find some old pictures if I can of how it looked back in the day.
back in the 1800s day.
I guess that's all that's changed in this village over time. Everything else has pretty much stood still.
Graves everywhere. Look, wherever you can fit them in.
Such a peaceful place.
More in here in with the cobbles.
What dates we got on these?
1775.
1775.
That guy on the bench as well said um not many people come here cuz it's quite close to Howeth and um which is famous for the Bronty sisters.
So, guess if you do want a bit of a quiet uh day out in the area, this is the uh place to come.
Come here, Freddie. All right, guys.
Thanks for watching and I'll see you on the next one. Don't forget to subscribe, like, and share.
Bye for now.
I nearly forgot to show you the pub, but this is the um main street of Heepton stall.
I was all ready to go back to the car.
And these are the streets that Craigville coiners would have terrorized perhaps or maybe they were loved by the locals like the um Pey Blinders were.
So this is the pub. It wasn't called the crossing originally, but this is where the peak not Peey Blinders, the Crackville Coiners used to come and uh have the meetings and ended up throwing the guy in the fire for uh snitching on them and he uh he passed away in there as well.
I'll show you a little bit more while I um walk back to the car.
Got some old shops and the uh post office >> and then we've got final All right, guys. Thanks for watching and I'll see you on the next one. Bye for now.
