Man stabbed on Perinton trail takes stand in suspect's hate crime trial

[00:00:00]New tonight, the victim in a brutal attack on a Perinton hiking trail coming face to face with the man accused in court. Good evening, I'm Matt Molloy.

[00:00:08]Derek Van Eps is charged with attempted murder as a hate crime in the attack on Dylan Gaemi last summer. 13 WHAM's Natalie Keltz a Tony was in court as Gaemi described that terrifying attack.

[00:00:19]She is live from the Hall of Justice tonight. Natalie, good evening.

[00:00:25]Good evening, Matt. Several more witnesses took the stand today, including the victim himself.

[00:00:31]Dylan Gaemi took the stand describing the details of the attack he calls unprovoked. He recalls passing by Van Eps on the Perinton Trail and saying hello. Gaemi says Van Eps then came running at him from behind and started stabbing him. Gaemi testified he managed to wrestle Van Eps off him and told the jury he thought it would be his last moments on Earth. The jury saw photos of Gaemi's extensive injuries. A sheriff's deputy from the Joint Terrorism Task Force also testified. He described his experience with investigating terrorism and white supremacist groups. The deputy testified how certain symbols and numbers can be related to those groups and beliefs. Another deputy took the stand this afternoon and the jury was shown photos of evidence collected from Van Eps' vehicle at Egypt Park, which is where he was taken into custody following the alleged incident. The jury saw photos of journal entries, several knives and machetes, and a hatchet. And testimony is expected to continue tomorrow morning.
