[00:00:18]Now, a lot of times you hear about hotels being built in Jamaica and airports being upgraded, buildings being built, and a lot of people always ask, "What about other areas in the economy?" Well, this one is food processing, and it's a very important facility.

So like what happened the other day with Hurricane Melissa destroying crops, if they had those similar crops in the cold storage facilities, then they would just distribute them and there would be no shortfall in the supply.

[00:01:19]The Essex Valley Agroprocessing Facility located in Essex Valley, St. Elizabeth, is one of Jamaica's most significant recent investments in agricultural infrastructure.

[00:01:31]Developed under the Essex Valley Agricultural Development Project, the facility was created to address long-standing challenges faced by farmers, including posth harvest losses, limited processing capacity, and weak access to markets.

[00:01:49]The facility serves as a modern agrocessing and support hub for farmers in St. Elizabeth and surrounding parishes. It allows agricultural produce to be washed, sorted, processed, packaged, and stored under proper conditions. This is especially important in one of Jamaica's main food processing regions, where large volumes of crops were often lost due to lack of proper handling and storage. By adding value to raw produce, the facility helps farmers earn better prices and become more competitive in both local and ex and export markets.

[00:02:28]The project also includes an administrative complex that houses key agricultural agencies such as the rural agriculture development or authority, rather, the agro investment corporation and a national irrigation commission.

[00:02:43]Having these agencies in one location improves service delivery, making it easier for farmers to access technical support, training and market guidance.

[00:02:53]In this way, the facility is not just a factory but a c a central support system for agricultural development.

[00:03:05]In terms of cost, the aggroping facility and administrative buildings were constructed at a cost of about $9.4 billion.
