The NFL's minority hiring initiatives, including accelerator programs, often fail to provide meaningful pathways for qualified coaches due to systemic barriers such as age discrimination and limited opportunities, as demonstrated by Eric Bieniemy's situation where his repeated participation in the program suggests the ship has sailed for his head coaching ambitions.

The Truth About Eric Bieniemy's Head Coaching Future | Cody & GoldHinzugefügt:
All right, let's talk let's talk a little Chiefs football. I'm sure we'll revisit the text line at some point, but the future for for coaches in the league, I think we've talked a lot about. The NFL has tried these different what they call accelerator programs, right? The the minority hires and trying to have relationships develop between some minorities in the league with ownership for future, you know, head coaching head coaching gigs, right? And it was pointed out and I think over at Arrowhead Pride they were going through this that the special opportunity as they're calling it at the owners meetings in Orlando, once again, Eric Bieniemy was part of this accelerated program that is geared towards minorities trying to develop their relationships.
I don't know about you. Now, look, I think it's great that they're doing the program.
Aren't we at the point now like what hasn't that ship sailed though from a head coaching standpoint for Eric Bieniemy? And that's not like I'm surprised we're even even come back up.
>> I I agree that the ship has sailed. Like I don't I don't even know what the circumstances would have to entail. Like he's the offensive coordinator for the next 3 years in which they're the number one offense, number one offense, number one offense, and then Andy retires, and then what? They hire a 60-year-old head coach? I mean, maybe. That would at least make it plausible. Does this not feel like And this is where I genuinely I felt bad for him the first time and I feel bad for him this time.
This feels like a humiliation ritual.
Why are they Why put him in the NFL accelerator program? You don't have other qualified young black or minority head coaches you can have in this program that maybe you can try to actually resolve this issue you have with minority hiring practice in the NFL rather than put somebody through the ringer who already got chewed up and spit out by this system. Like it And that part of it does bother me a little bit because it doesn't Look, and if anybody ever had any question he wanted to ever be a head coach, I always thought that was stupid to begin with.
He clearly does, but I'm not sure what his pathway would be.
The only I mean, yeah, I don't I mean, is it is it Does it matter though that he's going to the program again? I mean, it's it's it's not like there's a limitation, right? I mean, it doesn't say that you can only have one person representing your team. In fact, the Chiefs have two individuals going to this to this meeting, right? So, I I don't know why there's certainly no harm in going again.
No, there's I Yeah, there's nothing it doesn't hurt you. You attend, you do all this stuff. But, I guess the best case scenario for Eric Bieniemy is what? The offense takes off and it takes off for 2 or 3 years, Andy Reid retires, and he's a legitimate candidate. And he But, then he's 60 years old.
>> But, but in the in the case of like this accelerator program, you know, he shouldn't have to go through that to get hired by the Chiefs.
Why? I'm not saying anybody should have to go through this.
>> Or is he willing to be a college head coach or you know, like is he willing to go down to the the level that we talked about before that he should be entertaining, you know? Like, I just don't understand this idea of And look, if he wants to do it, no shame against him. That's fine. Like, he obviously has to agree to go through it. But, it just feels like a weird offer by the NFL to do it. And like, I I don't know. I just feel bad. I feel bad that he never got an opportunity. I thought he deserved one at the time. And then of course, what happens with coaches all the time is which which is if you miss the window in which you should have had a chance to become a head coach, that time just slowly slips away. What also stands out though is the NFL has done, despite many attempts, nothing to actually help their minority hiring practices. It has not gotten better. It hasn't even like moved the needle. Like, they're offering up draft picks. They're offering up accelerator programs. They're trying all this stuff. None of it's changed any >> too deep in the weeds on this, but like it is weird So, the NFL has this accelerator program, and it went away for I don't know, was it a year or whatever. And it's not just for like they they've revised it. They used to just be for minority candidates.
And if you I'm looking at the list of coaches that are part of this. This accelerator program is not just geared towards So, she's getting anybody who wants to be a coach? I mean, it's it's I mean, frankly, it's got a bunch of couple white dudes on the list. So, it's obviously not. I mean, it's if we're being real, like it's it's it's got a it's it's it's got >> And uh Mike Kafka uh uh Oh, yeah. part of part of that Another guy who people thought would have had a head coaching job by now, but hasn't moved on. I I believe that are that are part of the program as well. I don't know. It's interesting to see where this thing goes. I mean, he's not I mean, if you're betting if I was betting, we'd say Eric Bieniemy will never become a head coach. But, are the Chiefs his only chance or college? Would a college team take him? Would they hire a 60-year-old? I don't know.
>> How old was Lance Leipold when he got hired by Kansas? Yeah, but Lance Leipold had a has a long track record of history in college football. So, I No, I know.
Lance is 5 years older than EB right now. Yeah. So, we and Lance was probably hired when he was 57 years old by Kansas.
>> to UCLA, it didn't work at all. It didn't seem and and and the like the players didn't vibe with it. I don't know if maybe that the college the college age kids don't fit his coaching style. I don't It feels like his best chance, honestly, if he wants to get a legit shot at it, feels like it would be not with the Chiefs, but if he's on a if he was on a different staff, let's say >> Well, that was the whole thing with the Commanders. That's why he left Ron Rivera.
But yeah, but I mean, I I wonder if that if that's the if he gets a true shot at it, it'll be one of those the coach is fired in the middle of the season and they promote him and he has five games.
And then after those five games are the tryout for him to be a head coach.
the best chance he might get. Yeah, I I just assume if all goes well, he's going to be the OC in Kansas City throughout the rest of Andy Reid's career. If the offense is good, then maybe they they give it to him. I don't know. Whenever that day comes that Andy retires, then we'll be talking about whether or not he, you know, gets an interview, whether or not he's a legitimate candidate, and all that kind of stuff. So, that to me would be the the the path, the only path I could ever see now for him becoming one. I think the ship has sailed, but that would be the path where the offense is great all of a sudden for a couple years, three years from now Andy Reid, four years from now hangs it up, and then he's a legitimate candidate then and then we have the conversation whether or not that's the right hire at the time.
>> Yeah. I mean again, it like from a Chiefs perspective, this is the problem with EB.
Like if Andy retires in three years, I don't want a 60-year-old head coach.
Like and that and not because it's Eric Bieniemy, I don't want any 60-year-old head coach. And not period. And not that EB wouldn't be one of the choices, one of the options, but you have Patrick Mahomes, if for whatever reason Kyle Shanahan or Sean McVay are are there are available, it doesn't matter how good the offense looked, you're going to go after that coach. Yeah, well like if we talked about this when it related to In Gold, I think you were surprised when we talked about this before.
This was the single biggest reason why I didn't like the Giants hiring of John Harbaugh.
I was like he's 63. Are you sure that it had like it's not that crazy that it could just be a Pete Carroll situation and part of the reason they hadn't had success in Baltimore is the game just moved past his ass. Like that's not crazy.
>> Is maybe it's just to right the ship in New York and just try to get them to at least be >> Yeah, not that not that they've been the laughingstock the Raiders have been, but but if I were New York and I had a young you know, like I I think I might have been looking for a up-and-coming offensive mind, not a 63-year-old will be 64 by the time the season starts John Harbaugh. Like and and it might work for a season or an individual season, but then it's always the same thing. How many years do you get or like how many do you get to you know, like how many years of winning before you got to find a different head coach to continue that thing and I don't know. It's a tough spot for Eric Bieniemy. I thought it was interesting thing that he's gone back through the program. Good for him if he still wants to become a head coach. I hope he finds some pathway to it. I think the only way would likely be college and probably small college, Drew, as you had mentioned.
>> Yeah, to get to start off with, I would say so for sure. So I don't know if it'll ever come to that. On the other end, we got more news after this show ended yesterday on Rashee Rice. We finished the show, we knew Rashee Rice was going to jail for 30 days, we knew it was for a violation of probation for testing positive for marijuana. What we did not yet know was he also had off-season knee surgery to clean up some loose bodies in his knee that was going to sideline him for multiple months, that he will now have to begin the rehab process of from jail. And I think you and I came to the same conclusion, which is this makes him look even dumber.
This makes your decision-making as it relates to that even worse. I was mad enough at the decision-making yesterday.
Now to find out that he has to rehab a surgically repaired knee from jail for the next 30 days. It's like, "What were you thinking? Why?
Why? And what were you thinking? What part of this process made this It's just like, you know, some of it goes back to yesterday, which is you're just not So, he he doesn't he he consistently makes poor decisions, plain and simple. There's no There's no, you know, excuse of, "Oh, I I I had the surgery and I I needed to smoke some weed for pain or whatever." That that this guy continues to make bad decision after bad decision. And as far as the surgery part of it, yeah, I mean, there's a real football implication to it as well because you're right. You're There's no way you're going to have the same rehab in behind bars, literally behind bars, as you would if you were in the Chiefs facility on a daily basis during OTAs getting work on the They don't let you use those stretchy bands, my guess is, while you're behind bars to Why can't you use those? Are those a weapon? I'm getting I'm It's an elastic band. They'll let him use weights. I have no idea. What does Dallas County Jail have amenity-wise? That's not probably what they call it in in jail. Is it worse to be in county or would you rather You don't want to go to prison.
>> You're asking me?
I was just >> As if I had some knowledge of the difference between county and and Come on. I I'm guessing just being behind bars for 30 days sucks either way.
Yeah, I would say so. And I don't know, like I imagine there's more freedom in in jail because of most most of the people are awaiting trials. Not necessarily doing. And I don't know whether or not and I don't know the size or scope of these or which facility he's going to be in or any of those things in between. But I do know that it's not good to rehab an injury from jail. No matter even if they gave him the stretchy bands, Alex.
And he's got nothing but time to rehab the thing. He's got no one to monitor him. Test the strength of ask for questions or whatever.
visitation from Ru Rick Breholts or like, "Hey, I get it."
>> [laughter] >> Uh no, I'm just asking. No, serious question. I'm just asking.
Get him on the visitor's list. I'm literally just asking.
All right, man. This guy's got a serious down to the Dallas County Jail to do rehab. I'm just Could you imagine?
>> [laughter] >> That's wild. What? He doesn't, you know, like Oh my goodness. No, I'm guessing he, you know, he's he probably can be told some certain stretches and things he can do to try to his only focus should be lifting weights and and rehabbing the knee, but there's no way you're getting the same treatment. Someone on the text line, multiple people saying county jail way worse than prison. It's a I mean, in a in a lot of ways it's people from all >> Man, those those beds People coming off drugs, people waiting trial, like people waiting very serious trial, like it's all over the place. I mean, the beds in Saint Joe for training camp are going to feel like he's staying at the Ritz-Carlton by the time he gets up there after what he's sleeping on right now.
>> Well, sometimes county it's like sometimes they do like the uh you know, tent city outside where like you know, you just get a cot, you know, I don't know what again. Someone says county typically has little to no amenities. It is kind of funny to Amenities?
>> [laughter] >> Why are there any amenities? Well, you know, like you got to keep people in there, you know, you can't just lock them up every single second. That's no good.
There's a I'm actually pulling up a YouTube video. There's like somebody who did like a day thing in Dallas County where it's like it's kind of the video, you know, like one of those like TV specials or whatever. Maybe that'll give us some idea. But I don't know, I mean I still imagine you'd rather be in county than jail or prison or county jail than prison.
>> show research, Cody. Go ahead. You want me to spend a day in county?
Yeah, let us know.
>> thank you.
>> know. Could you I First off, I assuming that's not allowed. I don't think I could just volunteer to be like, "I'd like to spend one day in county, please."
>> think so, Cody. No. Someone says most new jails don't have weights at all.
Because they can be bad weapons when used incorrectly. So they don't have access to weights at all anymore? Is that true?
I don't know.
I mean I know that there's like some you can get some like iPad or computer access or this kind of stuff, but again it's limited to the amount of time that you have it. I just I I was even more frustrated with him after learning that yesterday. And I'm telling you right now, that knee thing is going to loom the entire year. If he misses Oh, Rashee Rice is out for 3 days of training camp practices. Knee's a little sore recovering from it. Be like, "Yeah, maybe it wouldn't be sore had you been able to exercise it properly for 30 straight days." It could be week 16. And they say he misses the game because his knee hurts. We're like, "Well, maybe if not Maybe if you were available in May maybe you'd be feeling fine." Because I don't And again, it's probably not It's a minor knee operation. It's not different than a lot of other guys have, but it's just like not having that availability and not In addition to that, just makes the decision-making even worse.
>> say this, based on this text line that we got going right now, 913-586-7965, We got a lot of um We got a lot of We got a lot of experienced individuals with a lot of knowledge about the the judicial system or at least the jail system, I should say, not the judicial system, the jail system that exists. A lot of a lot of people arguing with each other on the text line saying, "That guy that texted that's not right." People are very very passionate.
>> if people could actually respond individually to people Oh, it would be a mess.
>> they could respond to other people's texts. That'd be great. Well, that's the situation with the YouTube and Twitch chats are for.
>> if you want to get involved in there.
Yeah. Yeah, now LeSean McCoy was talking about this on Who was he doing the podcast with? Who was he doing the >> This is his podcast.
>> With who though? There's somebody else on the audio.
>> Emmanuel Acho and then somebody else who said T.J. Houshmandzadeh does a couple of nights with him during the week as well.
>> This was them talking about Rashee Rice.
I never personally smoked weed before. A lot of my homeboys did.
They must love it, man. If you go to smoke weed, they go for 30 days in jail, you must really love it. Him and Josh Gordon should throw a party, home. It should be Puff and Party should be called Puff Puff Pass.
If you can smoke weed and go to jail for 30 days, you must really love it, home.
You know what I mean? You must really love that, home. No blunt is worth 30 days in jail to me, bro. That's crazy.
[laughter] And I don't know what type of brand I know there's a lot of different brands. It's a Cali Where is from?
30 days worth? In 30 days, he going to be back to play with the Chiefs, right?
He already know the offense. He know Andy Reid. Andy Reid know brothers like to smoke that green. He knows that.
And he understands that.
But who don't understand that is Rashee Rice. You cannot smoke the green cuz you are in trouble, son.
So, when I look at this young brother, I'm like, damn. Yeah. Put myself in his shoes. Phone ring.
Ring, ring.
Yo, what up? What you doing?
>> [laughter] [snorts] >> I'm just relaxing.
You know what I'm saying? Yo, you [laughter] can't smoke. I know. If you get caught, it's 30 days.
>> [laughter] >> Do you think he's One, he may never talk to the media about it anyway or say I'm not going to answer questions about it.
I'm guessing he's going to say he's he's moving on. If he answered a question about it publicly, do you think his reason would be my knee hurt after the surgery? I didn't think about it.
Or he'd just be like, I'm sorry, I made a mistake. I didn't, you know, like I mean, he can't claim he didn't know that he can't smoke weed. It's part of his probation. If that's the case, then he's even dumber than we thought, but I don't know.
For LeSean For LeSean McCoy to say Puff puff pass is the name of the party he and Josh Gordon should have.
>> it was crazy like with that and Drew you weren't in sports radio at the time but like that Josh Gordon story at the time was nuts because it was just like like just stop. And at the time obviously like it looks in retrospect it looks kind of stupid because most of the guys in the league were doing it and he certainly wasn't alone and they have now since said it doesn't matter in the NFL they don't care. But again this is like a it's the criminal part of it versus and the legal part of it not that the NFL cares the NFL doesn't care but his probate you know like the probation part of it did and mattered and he still did it and then he got tossed it. So I mean he's in a it's crazy. He's in there right now for another 30 days. Assuming he still >> get out until June 16th.
>> to serve the full 30 yeah. Yeah. Well we'll see. Yeah cuz I that part you know people talk about this all the time they let people out early from county for overcrowding or a million other reasons.
The Chiefs to me but I don't know Look we we've got Chiefs contributors who know the way the things have been going for the Chiefs the last 5 years or so we we could honestly just have a permanent lawyer on call for us to help us anytime there's legal issues related to sports teams in this city.
>> Yeah you're right. We probably should just like find a local lawyer to partner up with.
>> Yeah like anytime we anytime something happens you know with Rashee Rice we need we need you to call him immediately.
>> county jail and prison we're just we're trying to debate the amenities. Stay off the damn weed.
In this case in that this case that's what we're talking about but I guess it's more about all the other things.
Yeah Carrington's song Him singing a couple of lines from because I got high that was great.
>> It was great. Carrington was great with that. Yeah. That's two different times we've played songs on the show from other people Cody that have not made you look good. Ah. Carrington's song some people said was better. We had Magkowski play >> And Matt's a genius that's not fair.
Don't compare me to that.
>> Okay. Okay. I'm just saying.
Carrington's was good though it was really really good.
