[00:00:26]Good evening and welcome.

[00:00:29]Tonight we will be going over the history and geography of Choluteka in Honduras.

[00:00:43]So you can see Cholulka department borders Nicaragua here which we'll be visiting Nicaragua next week. We'll be going more down there next week.

[00:00:57]Choluta also has a Pacific coast line here in the Gulf of Fa.

[00:01:03]It's very marshy as you can see here.

[00:01:05]There's lots of wetlands and reserves around the coast, but there's also some beaches as well that we'll check out.

[00:01:14]Inland, it's much more hilly. There's lots of farmland and lots of beautiful nature as well that we will explore.

[00:01:26]Chute is known as the pearl of the south in Honduras and is the only major city in southern Honduras where the Paname Highway comes through.

[00:01:41]If you don't know, the Pan-American Highway goes from Alaska to the very bottom of South America and ti del fuego from the top of North America to the bottom of South America.

[00:01:52]Except for the Darian cap in Panama, but that's neither here nor there.

[00:02:00]For the history here, of course, it goes back a long time.

[00:02:05]There's a long history of indigenous populations living here. The ones who lived here at the time of the arrival of the Spanish would be the Chotega who had a settlement here in what's now Cholute. There's a lot of like confusion about when Choluteka was founded.

[00:02:27]There's like technically three different foundings, right? There was the indigenous community that lived here. In the 1530s, the Spanish established their settlement here that was a mining community, but it officially became like a city of Honduras in 1845. So a lot of sources I read was like Chulka was founded in 1845 but like it had clearly existed long before then. So whichever date you prefer that's when Cholulka was established and I think it was always called Choluta. You can see here it's called Sut Cholut Chulka city.

[00:03:08]Probably the most famous historical fact about Cholulutka is that it is the home of Jose Cecilio Devay. He was born here in 1780 and he would become a very important person not just for Honduras but all of Central America.

[00:03:30]He helped Central America gain its independence from Spain. He wrote the act of independence of Central America.

[00:03:41]It's basically the Thomas Jefferson of the area.

[00:03:45]And once Central America gained its independence, it was one big entity. All the countries together except Panama. Panama is always the exception, right? Panama was part of Colombia or Grand Colombia at the time.

[00:04:01]So, Central America is now its own country independent. Oh, I guess Embleies too.

[00:04:08]Independent of Spain.

[00:04:10]They needed a leader. So, they had an election. They elected a president and they elected Deva to be president. But the powers that be Congress, I think it was like Congress or Parliament, I think it was a Congress decided to redo the election because they weren't happy with how it was ran.

[00:04:29]And another person won that one and he became the president of Central America.

[00:04:34]So sorry to this man. You were president very briefly but it was not to be.

[00:04:41]He left politics after that understandably. I think I would too.

[00:04:47]His house here in Chulka is on the back of the 100 Lampira note which is the currency of Honduras named after national indigenous hero Lampira.

[00:05:01]One famous event that happened here very recently in 1998 was the arrival of Hurricane Mitch that blew through and destroyed quite a lot. You can see the Cholute Tekka River flows through here, right? The hurricane changed the course of the Cholute Tekka River. There was a big bridge built over it here in the city of Choluta.

[00:05:27]And there's a very famous photo and thankfully it's on Google Earth where I would put it up here, but we'll see it on Google Earth where the bridge is just over nothing and the river is next to it. It's pretty wacky picture. It does not look real, but it's very much real.

[00:05:44]That is one of Cholka's claims to fame is that image, but of course it's all been fixed and now the bridge goes over the river again.

[00:05:54]But that is all that I found for you about the history of this department of Honduras. But there's a lot of beautiful pictures to look at. So why don't I hit the lights and grab my tablet and we will explore Cholute Tekka on Google Earth. Let's go.

[00:06:12]Here we are in Cholute Tekka department.

[00:06:16]Let's start by zooming out so you can see exactly where we are in the world.

[00:06:20]Here's beautiful Honduras.

[00:06:24]kind of sandwiched in the middle of Central America. There's Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Bise. There's Honduras there.

[00:06:37]Honduras is easy to spot because it's got this long coastline, the Mosquito Coast there along the Caribbean. So, if you're just looking at Central America and you see the Yucatan and then it goes flat right there. That's Honduras before it curves down into Nicaragua.

[00:06:57]Easy to find Honduras on a map. We're down here on the Pacific coast. There's the Gulf of Fa. Let's start in this wetland here.

[00:07:09]If I recall, there weren't like a ton of pictures. Yeah, look at that beautiful spoon bill. Look at that pink. I wonder if it's like a flamingo. It's from the diet.

[00:07:18]Not a ton of pictures down here. You can see lots of aquaculture happening here as well, but there are look at hiking spot. No pictures though.

[00:07:32]Um, lots of little reserves here and there. Any pictures here? Unfortunately, no. It's all swampy, beautiful wetland.

[00:07:42]Puna has pictures though. It's a famous spot down here. Look at all those chickens. Holy moly. They're all They're not chickens. There's sand pipers and maybe some seagulls around as well. They brought their doggo out. Beautiful beach. Can you see all the birds?

[00:08:01]That's a lot of birds. Holy moly, that's a lot of birds.

[00:08:07]Gorgeous little spot, though. One of the many gorgeous little spots along the coast here. But you can see how goopy swampy it is down here. See if this one's got any pictures.

[00:08:22]What's that? They're baby turtles.

[00:08:24]That's right. There are a lot of turtle spots along here.

[00:08:31]I think this island, which is not part of Choloteka, has some turtle spots, but also up along here as well. Let's see if this reserve has any pictures. By turtle spot, I mean places where turtles come to lay their eggs. The only time turtles touch land is when a pregnant female comes to lay eggs and then when they crawl back to the ocean. The only times turtles ever touch land.

[00:08:59]Beautiful coast here. Pretty boats there all painted.

[00:09:04]Little fishing boats out there. Gorgeous sunset.

[00:09:11]There's another I think it was this beach. Daniel.

[00:09:16]It's just a nice little beach.

[00:09:18]Very picturesque.

[00:09:22]Yeah, that's essentially the coast line here. I guess is the other famous spot up here. Turtles here as well. But you get the picture. Look at the baby in the ocean. They don't look very They both don't look very certain about swimming in the ocean.

[00:09:40]But yeah, beautiful beaches here.

[00:09:45]Let's go check out the city of Jolka, which I also read has one of the best preserved old towns, like Spanish old towns in Honduras.

[00:09:59]Um, I'm guessing the cathedral is part of that.

[00:10:04]It's very beautiful.

[00:10:08]I've never seen an ugly cathedral. Let's be real.

[00:10:12]Um, but over here is Devay's house.

[00:10:20]There's the cathedral. Little courtyard inside. There's a plaque there for his house.

[00:10:30]Looks like a restaurant. I don't think Can you eat in there? Is there food? I'm guessing that's him right there. I can't read the little plaque underneath it.

[00:10:39]It's taken too far away.

[00:10:44]But yeah, most famous house in the city. And look, there's the back of the Lampira. And there's the house.

[00:11:00]The bridge is over here. Karas bridge.

[00:11:05]We can see what it looks like today.

[00:11:07]Apparently, it was modeled after the Golden Gate Bridge, which I love cuz I'm from San Francisco.

[00:11:13]Nice, beautiful bridge over the river.

[00:11:15]But here's what it looked like after Hurricane Mitch. This is the famous photo here. The river completely changed course and the bridge now not only leads to nowhere, there's no water underneath it anymore.

[00:11:29]So yeah, this photo comes up a lot when researching Cholulka, but it's all fixed now. As you can see, they're they're underneath hanging out.

[00:11:41]It's like a school trip or something.

[00:11:45]But yeah, that's pretty much the best pictures that I found in town.

[00:11:51]It's mostly just the bridge and the cathedral and the parks as well.

[00:12:02]But if we head out, we can find lots of beautiful nature sites. If I go over here, have to figure out the pictures I found.

[00:12:21]There's the big viewpoint. And here's the beautiful view, the lovely mountains. I wonder if you can see into Nicaragua from there. I bet you can.

[00:12:31]Why did I need to look up San Marco? Oh, because of this. It's like there's something there. I need to see the biosphere reserve. It's a UNESCO biosphere reserve here. And of course, it's stunning.

[00:12:44]Rancher there with his cows. Beautiful rainbow for the area.

[00:12:52]There's a monkey.

[00:12:54]Or no, it's an iguana. It's an iguana. I see its face now. Right there.

[00:13:02]Sweet mumus, beautiful waterfalls, hiking trails, little villages out in the wilderness, right? Looks like a little burau there.

[00:13:15]That's a squirrel. Also, not a monkey.

[00:13:57]Um, I'm going to throw the borders back up just so I don't wander into the rest of Honduras. Not today. See, I was already out of bounds. Up here is where I want to be.

[00:14:10]Oh, and as I'm going up here now, I'm remembering that there is like nothing at the same. Let's see.

[00:14:17]to see. No pictures up here. Not much else to see, unfortunately. But it is beautiful. You can see the farmland. You can see all the nature as well throughout trape.

[00:14:43]It's a monument there. They got cows as well. They got a spooky looking church.

[00:14:49]A beautiful sunset here.

[00:14:54]It's like kind of a limital space there in the middle of nowhere. Honduras.

[00:15:02]Auae. They're hot springs.

[00:15:07]Let's see.

[00:15:10]Oh, yeah. It's boiling.

[00:15:16]Lots of space there as well. Probably not the kind of hotring you can swim around in.

[00:15:23]Probably the kind of hot spring that's stinky and would burn you. Look at this solar farm. Holy moly.

[00:15:35]Does it continue down there? Yeah. Check that out. Big solar farm.

[00:15:42]Wow. farming all kinds of stuff around here.

[00:15:46]Central Tristico, I think. Oh, they got swimming. Oh my gosh. I don't think we'll end it here, but this is pretty cool. There's got to be a dinosaur somewhere.

[00:15:58]They've got elephant. They're inside an elephant. There's got to be a dinosaur.

[00:16:03]There's always a dinosaur.

[00:16:06]I guess an ostrich is technically a descendant of a dinosaur, right?

[00:16:14]I can't believe there's no dinosaurs here. I'm shook.

[00:16:18]Looks like a fun place though. They got peacocks and geese. Those are kind of like dinosaurs.

[00:16:25]Parks like these all over the world. You can almost always find a plastic dinosaur. It's really funny.

[00:16:32]Anyway, let's end it at Guavo. How about that? Nope.

[00:16:40]Nope. They got some kitty play stuff though. Let's end it at this bridge.

[00:16:48]Yeah. Let's end it on this bridge. No, that's not as scenic.
