Logan Beck effectively captures the organic social cohesion of the Baishatun Pilgrimage, where shared physical endurance dissolves the boundary between local tradition and the global observer. It is a poignant reminder that the true essence of culture lies in unscripted communal hospitality rather than mere spectacle.

Welcome to Jong Hua.
>> Dude, you're doing it.
>> We just got a >> You're part of it now, baby.
>> Yes.
We're right here in person, up close.
I I can actually get behind uh walking the courage.
Wow.
>> There's a line of people.
>> Wo. Okay, that was actually really good.
>> Struggling to walk not because the amount of people on the road, because the amount of food being shoved in our face. What brings you here?
Let's try this bad boy.
Josh, welcome to Bach.
>> Hey guys, I'm back.
>> Okay, now Josh, number one, he does speak Chinese. So, a big test today is for you to speak some Chinese for this.
>> Okay.
>> Number two, Josh, is remember when I took you to Dajamani?
>> Yeah.
>> How was that event?
>> Oh, it was insane. It was like a Fourth of July parade mixed in with pretty much any other parade in America combined into one big event.
>> And this module, they started up in Ma and it's an 8 through 10 day 400 km experience. Wow.
>> Okay. So, they start from at the Gong Tang Gong all the way to the Beong Tao Tangong and back up. But here's the fun part, Josh.
>> There's no set route. So, as you're following Matu, suddenly >> they'll be walking and boom, they shift places. Which is why some people say this is the hardest mazu to follow. So you've already noticed the road is full behind us cuz people their orange hats.
Today you get to be one.
>> Woman welcoming Baku Mazu to Jang Hua committee board.
>> Okay. Should we get going Josh?
>> Yeah.
>> Let's cross the street.
>> All right.
Yeah, Josh and I are starting the day great. We're walking against the grain.
Mazu is up the road, maybe 2 km or so.
>> HI.
>> OH, SH. Thank you. way.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah, >> dude. You remember these?
>> Oh my gosh. We're making some serious loot.
All you can eat and all >> all this cool stuff.
>> All this loot. Look, >> we've started loading it on my backpack already. And Josh, we've only began.
It's like 20 minutes in our little walk.
Yeah. A fellow white guy on the street.
How are you?
>> Good. Yeah.
>> Good. Where are you from?
>> Uh, California.
>> Okay. Okay. We're from Utah, so >> Okay. Yeah. Yeah.
>> What brings you here?
>> Let's try this bad boy.
>> Right. I love the attitude. Keep it up, man.
>> Yeah.
>> Yep. Take care.
>> Me and Trump are tight there. He's always asking for my advice. This is cool.
>> So many people.
>> But wait, there's more.
>> No way.
>> Yeah.
>> Ready?
Wow.
Okay.
Wow.
And there needs to come dojo like >> Yeah.
Oh, Josh. Okay. So Josh, this is important because this is the official start of the pilgrimage. It's not the actual sedan itself, but this is it.
>> By shanz.
>> And then have you noticed that everyone has that one character everywhere on the hat?
>> Yeah.
>> It means yong, which means courage.
>> Okay.
>> Walk with courage.
>> Cool. I I can actually get behind uh walking with courage. I think that's a good theme. I like that >> cable man.
>> Yeah, let's uh back there. So, let's get ready. People are definitely walking with courage here in the heat. This is hot. Like I I am like dripping in sweat.
Okay, we did it. An exciting morning. I have finally taken Josh off the road and next to us, Josh right here. This is the sedan of right next to us. We're standing next to something so significant and important here in Taiwan. Millions of people walk this 400 or so kilometer thing the 8 through 10 days a random course taking this from me all the way south to Bang and we're part of it now.
This is so hot out here and they're just >> Do you feel the pace we're talking about Josh?
>> Like they're they're hauling like this is not a slow pace.
>> We've got to do this sh style. Let's get up here.
>> You film me?
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Just keep on going.
Dude, can you feel the energy in this environment?
>> Sweet. Yeah, this one's kind of cool cuz like last time it was like like I said, it was like a big party, but this one like people are serious.
>> We got to go.
>> Heading forward.
Wow.
We're right here in person up close.
>> Dude, YOU'RE DOING IT.
WOO! CAN you can see the line of blessings. They're literally lined up >> here. What I like is you can It's It's very cool, Joel. But you can feel the religious aspect very well.
>> You see right there, John?
>> How is this?
>> This is cool. Look at >> This is crazy. It's I'm sweating buckets out here and everyone's just walking with this thing. This thing is a mark.
Oh, dude.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Well, we have officially now walked back to where we started the video. Josh, the bridge is right in front of us and oh my gosh, you're sweating my eyes.
>> The heat's coming. The current goal right now is we're going to be walking from this location all the way near into Jang Hong. Then we're going to enjoy the festivities with the people because what's fun is this pilgrimage is based on people's pace. Yeah.
>> Okay. So, yes, you could walk in Mu, but that's tiring. Most of these people choose to walk ahead and walk forward almost to take the pilgrimage as their own thing, which I think is really nice.
So, we're going to be heading this way, walking with the crowd, and eventually as a Jang Hua, as he welcomed Ba and Matu back to Jang Wa committee. We'll be there waiting for Matzu to take her in there and then hopefully at the end enjoy some fun.
>> Yes.
>> So, I told Josh it could be a short day or a long day. Either way, >> it's going to be a great day.
>> Oh, yeah.
You like that?
>> Oh yeah.
>> Icy hot.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Baby >> next to the garbage truck. I think it's the most important truck.
>> This is coffee heaven.
>> Coffee heaven.
Don't you want to jump in this? Oh yeah, definitely.
>> This is it.
>> Very good.
Oh, this is hot.
>> How's that? Good.
>> Wow, it's warm. Oh my gosh.
>> That's good, man. Hey, >> roadside service, too.
>> A little roadside pancake.
>> You can't go hungry or thirsty. And if you get tired, they have vehicles that take you like >> Yeah.
>> What an event.
>> Full service, baby.
Hello. Yeah.
>> Holy crap.
>> We just got a hat.
>> Put it on, my man.
>> Well, yo, you got M.
>> You're part of it now, >> baby.
>> Yes, we got a hat, my man.
>> I love this hat. It's a good hat.
>> Keep it, man. Keep it forever.
>> We're walking with courage.
This is the official va Mazu. Welcome to Jang Hwa committee.
>> I think they've got this. The Mazu is in good hands. Um and it should be a a smooth rest of the the journey.
>> I know, right?
>> Yeah. This is sweet.
>> He's walking this way and soon it's going to slow down a bit. Now Josh, here's what's scary. Up here, the road makes a fork.
>> Yeah, >> left and right. We're going to choose the right way. That's normally where it goes, but >> it could go the other way.
>> It could go left, and we'll have to just run to catch up to it. So hopefully Mazu chooses the same path we choose.
>> Yes.
>> And to that we say, >> okay, here we go.
>> The most excited part. Welcome to Jong Hong.
>> Hey, Mazu has officially entered Jang Ha. We fulfilled what we came here to do. Now it's time to walk with people, follow Mazu, enter Jang Hua city, and end it all with a big celebration of Guanguro Fan. But once again, Josh, I brought you for the cultural experience. Much more to see, much more to do. So, let's see what lies ahead.
>> I'm so excited for this. There's so many people and this is really cool.
>> Dude, this is nice, >> dude.
Thank you.
>> Oh my gosh. You just walk around. Food everywhere. People everywhere. The ultimate cultural experience. Something everyone has to do in one lifetime. This is just beyond compare. Absolutely chaotic fun.
This is wild. Like we got the drummers up above us. We got this.
>> Holy crap. Look at the pizza.
>> How's it going, man?
>> Hey, good.
>> I don't see many other white guys here.
>> Yeah. France.
>> From France. Okay. And you? Um, I'm from the US, but I've lived here for 10 years, so very used to this.
>> Okay. No, I'm sure, man.
>> Okay. So, you know what's going on. You know this whole thing.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay. The world's largest >> all you can eat food buffet.
>> Yeah. So, enjoy it, man. Take care.
>> All right, guys.
>> It is the best part of the day. You're never going to guess what it is.
>> This is the best part of the day. Our co-workers, our former co-workers here, they're committed to keeping the streets of John Hawk Queen and they're doing a great job out here.
>> So many people crowded together makes it fun. The enthusiasm is just glowing and radiating through the people, the environment. And my favorite thing is, as far as I can see, it's a sea of orange. Sea of just that enthusiasm, as I was saying, glowing through the streets here in Jangpa. You can sense it through your eyes, through your heart, through your soul. And it's it's honestly beautiful. I wish you could see what we're seeing. I just don't have the way to capture it as immaculate as it is right now.
>> Yeah. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the people. This is amazing. It is an event to not miss.
>> If you can't walk it, you come out and you support the people.
>> It's like a parade and like a like a fair.
>> The roads were packed full of enthusiasm and Bishhat Madzu had found a place to rest. She and the followers would be here until 2:00. And shockingly, the roads from as far as I could see were full of these followers, enthusiastic, excited, and motivated. So for Josh and I, we followed the other part with them heading into Jangua City to continue our own field trip. We've been doing lots of Taiwanese stuff today. We're showing him the ropes. Um, free food everywhere you go. And you know what? He's sitting with the peeps.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Look at this. All of these people and Josh. And what do you have right there?
Um, I have some chicken leg >> biandangan.
>> Biendan.
>> Hey, that Hey, that doesn't look bad.
>> That looks pretty solid, actually.
>> Wo. Okay, that's actually really good.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> I mean, it looks like that.
>> Yeah.
>> This is it.
>> You and the garbage man.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Where's the garbage truck when we need it?
Ah, >> me fun.
Oh, >> yeah.
>> So good.
>> How trickor treat.
>> When you come to Jang Hua, they're the most enthusiastic people. Oh my gosh, dude.
>> Taong was nice. It was good.
>> But man, are we in Jang Hua. We walk through this. I mean, we're struggling to walk, not because the amount of people on the road, but because amount of food being shoved in our face.
>> Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
>> Wo.
>> Go Josh. Dude, is there an end to this?
I don't think there is.
>> Oh my gosh. Wo. A number.
I'm going to be honest with you guys. I don't get tired often, but man, I'm I'm getting quite exhausted. The heat, the weight of my camera equipment, but I guess what keeps me moving. Oh, excuse me. Keeps me moving is the enthusiasm from the people. Year in and year out, I come here every year super excited. And you film the warmth, the love, what they known as Taiwan. And it's it's absolutely fabulous. They're taking care of each other, supporting each other, and of course, you get to walk through the streets with everyone. For me, that is my very favorite. It's great to be here every year. And every year it's different. And I'm glad I could share it with you guys, but mainly with Josh to let him see what the culture here is all about. Cuz in America, women went.
There's moments where you're just, you know, thrilled. It's fun. But I want something that really is moving. Just look at these people. They've been walking all night.
>> Yeah.
>> To the point where they just crash on the side of the road.
>> A good rest.
>> And we're laughing about the food. But the thing is, these people are preparing meals and ways for them to continue moving on without worrying about, hey, where am I going to buy my next meal or how am I going to stay hydrated?
>> And literally, they've been walking for days and days. And right here, it's just absolutely inspiring to see these people.
>> Hello.
Now, before we wrap up our final thoughts towards Bath Mazu, I want to share with you the bad news about Bhatra Mazu. Okay. The bad news is there's so many people doing it. So many people are thrilled that when they pass through Jang Hua city, they eat all overwang.
This store, that store, and the other store, the trifecta of Kangroan here in Janga want my we're in Roan. Now, this is very similar. It's like the but it's more minced and diced.
>> Look at the beauty of that. It's glistening with joy. Glistening with the the love of Jang Hua. Cheers. Basu mu.
>> Yeah. Bazu matu.
>> That was good, >> right? Equally slammy.
>> Yeah. I mean, maybe not what we wanted, but that was good.
>> I love this a lot. This is a bamboo shoot. I love to put it in here, mix it with the rice and the meat, put it together. One of my very favorite ways to eat this real alpha. You saw >> the crowds of people.
>> Oh, yeah. You witness the thrill of when Mazu enters. You experience the love and the warmth from the vendors to the people supporting and overall you got to live in the culture of Taiwan.
>> Yeah, definitely would love to do this again or come to another Matu. It was a great experience and uh wonderful way to like get to know the people and the culture and uh I got to practice my Chinese a lot. So that was great.
Oh. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
>> We got some serious loot. So, today this isn't food. This is just here. Put it down. Put it down.
Boape.
Three bags of this. Okay. Three bags.
Like look, look, look, look, look. Three bags of these. So, what I'm really excited for is Josh is going to be able to take a whole bag plus back, >> give it to all your young cousins, your family, and I think >> if you could take a souvenir back from Taiwan, >> this is it. It showcases what Taiwan is and actually came from the vent. It's more blessed. It's got that >> it's got that memory attached to it.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. We uh we we definitely walked for for these these gifts. Um and uh yeah, it was really fun just to interact with the people along the way.
Thank you to everyone that said hi and um yeah, it was a great experience.
>> Yeah. Well, Josh and I are ready to enter into a hunting machine.
We are for the ride.
>> Yep. We're very ready.
>> So, we're going to wrap up this food, go home, and just shower and lotion up. I should not have said that. Whoa, we're not that close to friends.
Anyways guys, thank you so much for joining us and how thanks for everyone for saying hi on the road to us and of course amazed and excited that Josh could join us.
>> Okay guys, remember to hit the like, subscribe, and I think you all know what to say.
Dude, >> ultimate side quest on a Tuesday, right?
>> Wild. Also, man, Mazu like pumpbaked us there. Like we're like, "Oh, shoot. It's not going to go." And then it turned last minute into that business. So hopefully hopefully they get some good blessings or you know whatever else Mazu can give
