Effective dairy farm management requires strategic paddock rotation planning, where farmers divide large paddocks into smaller sections (e.g., 7-7-6 posts) to maximize grazing efficiency and extend pasture usage from 2 days to 3 nights, while also managing drainage systems, applying lime for soil treatment, and monitoring milk production metrics to optimize herd productivity.

2 Days, Become 3 Nights. 30 Day RotationAdded:
Good morning everybody. So, let's get a move on. Time to go get the cows in. Um, yeah, it's not a it's pretty nice morning this morning actually. It's not too hot, not too cold, but there's a possible chance of rain this afternoon.
And by the looks of it, we actually had a small shower this morning, which is uh yeah, which is really good considering we put the lime on the last few days. It'll just uh wash it in nicely into the soil.
Yeah. All right, let's get a move on and go and uh find some cows, shall we?
>> And good morning, ladies. Good to see the gate handle still up here.
Rexie's coming. She knows the drill. So, this just gets hung back on here.
like that. Easy peasy.
Hey Rexie.
Morning darling.
Good girl. Scratches your And she like powers it up the front to go and get some meal.
The girls aren't too uh in a rush today, are they?
All right, let's get a move on. See, the girls are in a rush this morning.
starving to get to the cow shed.
Nice and slow. Happy cows. Nice and full. Just checking the drains.
All right, let's see if we can cow here.
See what her stats look like.
You see little 76. How'd you go this year, darling?
Nice little hea.
Also got to wind up a reel this morning.
Oh, good girl.
It's time to go. Don't even eat me. You go. You're going to get mooked. Come on.
Really? We got to wind up and one final sweep for the pedic.
Let's roll.
Take these girls up and get them up.
Got a fair way down again. They got to walk right down the back again today.
Some cows looking at drying themselves off. So, we're looking at them, but they weren't quite ready yet. There he is.
bright light.
But um yeah, we don't have enough. There's only there's one that's probably dried itself off who are just walking once a day now.
And we need really need to put them out in sort of twos and threes. So if they go out there, they get picked on. So you don't want them to get picked on. But anyways, let's go.
The one who's got a head through here.
Hello.
Hello. Who are you?
Oh, it's little chief. Hey, little chief.
Good girl, darling. Unfortunately, empty in your last year, but hey, good girl.
We might She might stay. She was only young, but we'll see. Good girl.
I like coming up here and patting the girls.
Hey doll, machines are started. Let's get into it.
Sorry. 23 pass by you, didn't I? Just bells and whistles on the corner.
>> Oh, they're pooping well by the look of it.
>> Oh, thank you. Thank you.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
stick it. So, what the water does essentially makes us take the cow to know that we're about to start milking them. Start dropping their milk anyway. Yeah, it works for us and also makes them nice and clean so we don't get covered in crap too much also as well. It cleans their teeth off if they're really muddy and um doesn't block up the filter. Can you tell Rex?
She's empty. Leaking milk. Tight ass.
She did get milk last night.
>> She did get milk last night. I've been picking it.
>> She might have held her milk. She might have been bullying.
>> She might be really well.
>> That's right.
>> And this one is in calf, too. S powering the M out. Rexy powering the M out.
Girls just moing their way out. There you go.
>> Happy with the way they're going, Dad.
>> Happy with the way they're going.
>> Very happy.
Up again.
>> That's good. Awesome.
Girl, guitar.
Yeah.
All right.
Misty out there this morning.
Not too foggy whether it's a rainy mist that could be coming through on uh What do you think, Dad? Me to be getting rain. Possible chance of showers tonight. Rain tomorrow.
>> Heard on the radio this morning.
>> Warm rain, too.
>> Yeah, it feels warm.
I didn't even wear my uh rain coat this morning. Just my vest. Should have worn my rain coat. Could have rained. Be good for the be good for the lime. Wash that in.
Cracker. Tell her to head off cuz she'll be here all day if she could eating the meal cuz everyone's falling down. What happens is she starts to get worried and then she really puts the foot down and starts running down. We don't want that cuz she'll only get hurt. She's got a long way to go today. So, see if we can see them right down there. There they are.
They're way down.
Shin's so damn league. She's a little bit >> Dad.
He's just gonna sort that out for us this morning. And we'll go and feed out these girls our two barrels of silage because they're a fair way down. And by the time we get back, Dad will probably be all done up and probably down at the maze already. You'll see the fog. I thought it was a bit of a mist, but his dad was saying it could be a bit of a sea fog. It's quite thick.
um coming in off the sea which is without that away. Anyway, let's roll on and uh graph some silage. We got that bail one bale down the race. So, we got to grab one bail from up here and then that other bail. Yeah, we'll grab that.
Not too sure when the next load of lime is coming, but Oh, my glasses.
Gosh.
Uh but it'll be here when it gets here.
Um I think uh probably not next week. the week after. Mainly because the uh we need some paddics to spread.
There's no point trying to get the paddic spread when they still got heaps of grass in them. So, just finishing up the yard of silage on beautiful.
Now, let's go.
He's somewhere on the fog down here.
Here we are. Just go over here.
Grab the bail.
Drop it on this side because I want to open it up.
Yeah.
All right. Something tells me I'm not going be starved today. There is a lot of grass in there. Could have just about probably been two days, but better to give a ski over. I'm definitely going to be spraying that. Then I'll get a Dock Star and a um a nice partial spray over. Same as this one here. Both of them got real bad dock issues because I didn't spray the mark yet. But we'll get to that. Let's go.
We're going to go get the trailer and then we're off. Dad's waiting to roll.
wouldn't lie to you. Doesn't matter what I do.
She knows how to drive a truck.
Heat.
Heat.
Just gone 8:00 and uh we're just finishing loading up the silage and we fed the cows and milked. Pretty good going.
Need a little arrow on that side there.
How you doing, Bobby? Hey.
He's happy.
Well, maze chopper is going well.
Nice orders from dad. We're going to go set up paddock number 34. Split that in half for two nights. Then take number nine and split that into three nights because we've got day paddics, but we're starting to run out of nights. And I was seeing that yesterday. I did tell dad about that. I didn't think we've got too many nights left. And he had a look as well. He tell no we don't. So, we're taking number nine, which we cut in half for two days, turn it into three nights.
Just something we can do cuz there's a lot of grass in number nine. And you also got to remember they're going to be getting maze still inside. So, that'll just push around out a little bit further so that we can get through this rain, which will actually wash in a lot of this um lime that we put on and then we can graze some of those paddics that we lined the other days. And see how there's a lot of weeds coming up. That dock will be too old by the time we go to pasture spray it. So that's why a little toot is going to be spraying going to be spraying this paddic once we're done with it. Once we're done chopping the maze. Yeah. So let's go.
We're going to set up those two paddics and then we're going to go spray some drains again. We got there's a drain where the cows were last night there that need to spray between the two paddics. One we got done by the digger not too long ago and starting to get some weed spraying in it. Again doesn't carry any water. Only when it's got only had a bit of rain.
No hassle about spraying it in there at the moment. If it does have water in it, we won't spray. Anyway, let's roll on.
And uh >> here we are. So, this is the paddic here for two nights. Got to remember they're getting basically with two nights comes two loads of maze and two piles of silage. So, it's quite a fair bit of grass. There's not much down here. This is the wet side, but coming up to the other side is going to be quite long.
It's half it's basically up to the top of the red band. So, here's halfway down this paddic. This paddic's basically split in half. Then there's a standard over there. And that's where we go to the standard there. That one bang on halfway or just over halfway cuz there's exactly 10 posts on that far side. And you always go just over halfway so that they graze the first half down. And then they can always graze the um first half again if you know what I mean. and they back graze after they've eaten a bit this way. But anyway, let's go set up our first reel and then comes up. She's a little bit girl. She's a little bit girl.
She can get enough of her wild.
>> Not too bad. That doesn't take us too long. Only about uh that only took me about 3 minutes setting that reel up.
Got our second reel here. Let's go wind up number nine and set it up again.
So, we've got currently set up at 11 posts. So, 20 posts on that side.
Currently got it set up at 11 and 9. 11 the first break, 9 the second brake. But for um this so we're going to split it three nights and that's going to be split so that it'll be seven, seven and six.
Seven for the first break, seven for the second brake and six for the last break.
That should do it nicely. Anyway, let's go set up these other two reels and uh day. Same with this paddic. We'll get three nights out of this one. As you can see, the amount of grass here, a lot of grass and probably would have been a bit of a waste. I'll say we got two days out of this with four bars of silage, two and two. But definitely um definitely going to get three nights out of this now. It's nice and lush tucker.
Three loads of bays and three bars of silage.
Let's go set up this reel.
What I do, she's got a hold on me.
last reel set up. So, as you'll see, I've got seven posts down there because essentially what we've done is we've included that water trough down there in the second brake cuz there's two water troughs. There's one up there and a water trough under the fence over there.
So, essentially, I was going to go seven and then go straight across that post over there anyway. But instead, we've gone around that, come up about a third of the way up the paddic, and kinkedked it round so that we've got the reel up here. So, it's seven there, six here, two, six posts here, and then seven at the far end. The biggest break is going to be the first break. Second biggest works out to be about this one. And then the third break is obviously the smallest, but they can back graze this way. So, this will be three nights now.
So, they'll be happy in there.
Anyway, let's go. We're going to go spray some drains now. Um, as usual, I can't really record much when I'm spraying with little to because yeah, sorry about that, but I'll try and do some recording.
Let's get to it, shall we? Why don't we change our mind about number nine being two days? Cuz essentially, we've got heaps of days coming up. So, we needed we got a night there, then we've got three nights in there, so it's four. And then another two nights and 32 is six nights essentially as a week. And then for day paddics, because number 10's a day, it can't really it can be cut in half for two nights, but it's not enough in there for two nights. So much the same as number seven. Number six will be a night further along. But yeah, so give this a week allows that lime to get in so we can go and graze number 19 and 20 for two nights as well. But if we look at it, we got 12, 10, and 9 are all a day. number 43 down the back of Willow Lane is also a day and then by then we do believe that there's going to be a couple of others coming ready for another couple of days. So that's the thing is there's a few day paddics ready and then essentially cut number nine in half would have given another two days but then again we wouldn't have had the nights. So there's essentially what we did was another two three nights just give ourselves more night paddics and then um yeah then we're away because we did use uh two of our day p two of our night paddics got turned into two days up uh number one and two there essentially and so as number three was basically a twoight paddic got turned into uh two days. So shows you where we're using our nights as days. Now we need to sort of pull some uh some nights back uh some day paddics back and turn them into nights essentially. So what you do you swap them over as you need them if they've got too much. You can also change them into days and that sort of thing. So as it was there probably would have been too much in here for two days anyway. So then they would have left a bit of grass behind. Why not turn it into three nights and get a good graze out of it? cuz essentially that'll probably be its last graze once we dry off. That's it. Cuz 3 weeks time is essentially and we're on about a 30-day rotation now.
That'll be shut up for um for carving essentially by then. Much the same as like 1, two, and three.
They're probably shut as well.
Oh, big bassy.
Yeah. Little messy. Little too. All right. So, we got actually number three here. There's a um bit around here that I want to spray anyway cuz we got to keep around the clip tank clear. Not allowed weeds and that going around the clip tank. So, we'll go give that a spray.
Usually give it a spray with a motorbike sprayer. But um because we haven't got a motorbike sprayer at the moment, going to give it a little spray or a little to shall we spray.
See, we sprayed the uh just the area there. We don't want to spray out the paddic. That not a good thing there. Sprayed that one. Sprayed there's one across the back there that's not too deep. I've also just sprayed this one.
See how that links up to this paddic down here. There's a fence just up there. Not too far along think where the bird is just there.
And uh see how overgrown it is. That's what we're aiming for those. And uh these ones like this too. But anyway, tank's going down nicely.
You can see the back of the tank here getting hit. That's our little uh agitator hose. And make sure the tank keeps cycling through. Yeah. Sweet. Go.
Well, onto the next two paddics.
There's rains all around these paddics. get them all sprayed out so that we don't um don't have to worry about any uh water any uh substantial rain events.
Good afternoon everybody. There he goes off to go get the cows in.
Had a nice eventful day. We um sprayed all the drains we wanted to spray and yeah, it's pretty much it. Then went home and had some uh breakfast.
Anyways, let's roll on and get more and let's see what we sent today. Eh, >> Wednesday. It is bomb day. We have no buildups, which is good to see. Probably shouldn't leave that as a figure eight.
Go. Let's bomb this vat. Give it a nice good wash. Turn ster on.
Here is the docket.
Here we are. Here's how we're going so far for the month. Up 412 solids in 4 days.
That's ridiculous.
Girls are going well. It's between three might say about around that 390 mark a day. 10.8 to 11% solid mark.
Up 21,000 for the season. Last year had 5,000 souls to go. So, we are not far off cracking the 150. We might just fall short, but we'll find out.
We need to do another basically 6,000 6 and a half thousand solids. be a big ask, but we'll see how we go.
All looking good there. Means we washing the vat properly.
And what? 3,600.
We're up on yesterday and the day before that.
Not bad. Not bad, ladies. Let's keep it going. Well, there goes Rexie. Way up the front of Rexie there. And we're still leaving the paddic. Cy young grass is looking awesome. Carry on like that.
We'll have to put a graze over it sooner or later. Successfully washed. So that's ready to go. We're ready to go. We're just waiting on the cows now. And they're on their way. They're not far away from passing the clip tank. The first ones. This side of the clip tank.
That is that's what I mean by clip tank is when I can see them on this part of the race.
But yep, most of them are on their way.
Now, let's see how many rows we can get out before dad gets here. E, let's give it a crack. Try and get at least two. I can get one usually, but two is a bit of a push. Let's give it a crack, eh?
She's so damn league. She's a little bit crazy.
And I love the way she looks in my eyes.
And I'm feeling like midnight's getting closer. And I just want to hold her.
>> Nice. We did get two rows out. Four down a row. This is row six, I'm pretty sure.
Come on, girls.
Come on. Hop. Hop. Come on.
That one's been milked as you can tell.
She backed out. You being naughty, eh?
Loves your meal. Come on. Any tape around their tail just means they need to be leaned on and cuts back flushed.
My dad may be having issues out there.
Two more.
That'll do. Number nine last.
That'll do. Somewhere around there.
Come on.
Oh, down. All right.
>> That's way.
Uh should they'll be all right. They might push back. Oh, incoming anyway.
A leak in the hose.
Season going into a storm.
Beautiful weather though. Not too hot this morning, not too hot this afternoon. Been quite nice weather.
Beautiful day. One of those stunning, perfect days to look out.
Absolute cracker out there this afternoon.
See, it's looking all right. Number 167.
She's probably not far away from drying off, but she's looking like she's nice and fat. Look at that.
But as Dad was saying, once the maze goes offline, probably find a lot more cows start drying themselves off.
They're out of here.
>> Yeah. Thank you.
Yeah.
>> Hard to do one hand. That's what we say, >> Dad. Like and subscribe.
>> Thank you very What's happened to the neighbor?
>> He's got one today.
>> Yep.
>> Yep. Oh, there he goes. Drop off his palm kettle b.
>> We will not be too far behind him. No, >> we'll probably be another week now.
Probably what we're thinking.
>> Waiting. always feed out in the new brake.
Let's go.
out of here. Hop on the high ground.
Heat.
Hey, what are you doing down there? Leave my tire alone. 178.
Hey Thank you. 275. Oh, get picked up.
She's attacking the tire.
Get out of the Get out of that. Damn it.
Well, well, with that, I'll see you all in the morning.
Thank you.
